I love, love, loved this! It's set in Somerset, England, during the English Civil War and features a Puritan family whose house is garrisoned by the King's men while the master of the household and his son are off fighting for Parliament. Silence St. Barbe, the Puritan housewife who is left to run the home in her husband's absence, faces many challenges and trials, not least when she falls in love with the Captain of the Kings army, Nicholas Hellier. I don't want to give away the ending, but let's just say I was shouting, 'No, no, he mustn't come back!' when I reached the end!
