Wrote A Thousand

I have so far written a thousand words this morning. Laughing
But I just now took a few minutes to skim over the sparodic scenes I’d
written to come up next.  A LOT is going to be deleted.  One of the
things writing scenes out like this does for me is defines the
characters better.  Lots of times I have to write these things out to
find one particular ‘trait’ or ‘thought’ that I know is there in my
brain but can’t quite put my finger on yet…then I find it in this scene
I’m writing that I know is going to happen way on later… after finding
it I then go back to the ‘edited’ section of my story and slip that
thought, vibe or whatever in.  And then I’m happy.  Laughing

But I had to smile as I skimmed forward.  I’m going to fall behind
in my total word count catch today because its time for me to do some
editing, sculpturing, fine tuning–deleting.   Laughing
This is alright to me.  In my first drafts I often ramble a lot and
give myself room to write it all, all my thoughts as I’ve learned how
much it helps me mold things into the right form.  I’ve got plenty
there now to do some clean up on and well, I’ll have a better idea of
where I stand for my story after the next couple of days.  Then
hopefully I can do some more rough drafting and catch up for word
count.  We’ll see.

One good thing about deleting extra stuff like this is — I start to
worry about having enough ‘room’ to get all the scenes in that I want
when I get past halfway for word count.  By taking the needed day or
two to do some deleting, blending, editing, I will erase much of the
repeated stuff and be given a breathier on space.    Cool

Have fun writing everyone!

Deleting stuff.

I have had to delete a lot for my on-line course. I keep all the deleted stuff in another file because I don't want to let it all go!

Nicole- Have you read any of the writing tips on the Michelle Styles website? There are a lot of good exercises for character development and pruning your ms.

Its a wonderful source

Hi Angel!  Its a wondeful source isn't it!  I have found several of the authors here at Harlequin to be so very helpful in their ideas and suggestions and time--like with Michelle's--as it takes a lot of time to put together those helpful tip sheets and such.  I have learned so much from this group!  Not to mention the other 'authors' floating around.  Smile

How is your writing going?
