You Might Be a PTA Mom

OnceUponAThanksgiving.jpg

I have a new thread here at eHarlequin this month at..http://community.eharlequin.com/forums/simply-series/holly-jacobs-presents-you-might-be-pta-mom-if

PTA Moms are the backbone of any school.  We run the Thanksgiving Pageants, the Christmas Fairs and Valentine's Dances (like the three heroines on my new American Dads trilogy).  We're room mothers, we chop lettuce, sell ice cream and go on field trips.

Come over and tell me about your best (worst) school mom experience!  We'll decide on a Top Ten, and the winner will win a t-shirt!

Room Mom

Holly,

I was a Room Mom for the last two years.  The jury is still out for this year because once you do it, you are on their list for life.  One of my best stories is the Halloween party last year for her 3rd grade class.  After all the parent helpers in 2nd  grade, I was shocked when only one other mom came to help in 3rd grade.  We had planned for 2 fun paper crafts, a food craft (decorating scary cupcakes, plus refreshments,  We got it all done because the Teacher helped with a craft and Marilyn and I ran ourselves ragged,  The high point was when the students wrapped toilet paper arounf Mr. Richardson and the Teacher's aide to turn them into mummies.  The kids all had so much fun.  And as much as I sometimes grumble, I love being involved in her class, meeting the other students and really getting to know her teachers.

There were more girls than boys - so the girls made Mr. Richardson a mummy and the boys made Ms. Grey a mummy.  Here is poor Ms. Grey!

What a great picture Tammy

I would have loved to do that to some of my teachers LOL

Oh, Tammy, I could so see how much fun they were having in the pictures.  Sometimes, being a PTA mom is a lot of work, but it's moments like the party that make it worthwhile!!

 Morning, Kaelee!

In the five years I was

In the five years I was involved with my children's first school, I got to know a lot of the kids and teachers.  I don't think I could pick a favourite moment...and they kind of blur together because I was also a temporary employee at times and so I just changed which "hat" I was wearing when I walked in the door.

But the ONE SINGLE THING I loved about being there were the hugs.  I got so many hugs in the run of a day.  Oh and the time we were watching Shrek in lunchroom and I started dancing.  The kids all laughed and then one little guy came up and said, "Mrs. Alward, you're so funny."  LOL

This week I'm meeting the teachers at the new school...and looking forward to volunteering again.

Oh, Donna, I'd have loved to see that dance!  I was the kindergarten story lady for years and the hugs are mighty special, you're right!!

Good luck on the new school volunteering!

Donna

Is there a YouTube video of your Shrek dance?

One of the kindergarten boys made me cry yesterday. On the playground he just came up and hugged me and said "I love you, Miss Angel." It's hard to see them as sweet little kids on days when the lunchroom is pure chaos but there are so many rewards to the short two hours I spend at the school every day.

Awesome on being the room mom! I was the coordinator at our last school and it was hard getting volunteers for classes 3rd grade and above. It seemed everyone wanted to help when their kids were little but later on not so much.

Love the picture almost as much as envisioning Donna dancing.

Ah...that was blubber worthy, Angel.  Kids in general can drive you nuts, but there are those sweet moments you cling to that sort of tide you over the nuts moments to the next sweet one!

Second Grade

I don't want to leave out 2nd grade as that was a very memorable year too.  I, along with a few other Moms took tons of pictures that year.  I collected them all, picked out the best ones and made a Photo CD set to music of the whole year.  I then made copies for everyone in the class including the Teachers.  It was such a big hit and everyone loved it.

Each Halloween, her school has a Parade of Fiction, so the kids can wear their costume as long as they carry a book that goes with the costume.  All 1300 kids marched in that parade. It took over two hours.  I ended up marching that year too (to my embarassment) when the Substitute Teacher could not be found, I couldn't let the class march alone, so I marched at the end of the class to make sure we all stayed together.

What made this year extra special was my daughter and her "boy friend" were in the same class.  Here is a picture.

Tammy!

Tammy, Oh so cute...thanks!  And I love the idea of the parade of fiction!!  That's so much more fun!!  Very nice that you marched.  And definitely the pic of your daughter and her 'boyfriend' is a keeper.  It should be pulled out when she's in high school and bringing a date home!  LOL Holly
