I just discovered e-books

I just discovered e-books about six months ago and I love them.  I like the fact that I get them instantly instead of waiting for the book in the mail. They are easier to read now especially since I have a laptop instead my desktop.  Some of people that I have talked with about e-books say that one of the cons is that they like the feeling of the print book in their hands.  I like them both and I will continue to buy both but if I can get the e-book that I will get that since I am running out of places to store my print books.

Tiffany I had my ebook

Tiffany

I had my ebook (Sony) since May 2009 and I have no problem with how it feel.  In fact is sure feels like a book to me; and reads like one or two or three...Oh, yeah, mine can hold about 200 books.

wj

LOL Wayne.

I don't know how many books dh's PDA can hold, but whenever I've expressed concern that I'm overloading it, he's given me the gesture that means, "Oh, so not even close, don't worry about it." So, I don't. Laughing I just keep buying books, whatever format I choose.

Tiffany, I didn't even know eBooks existed until 2006, when a thread popped up here in the Community asking if they were for YOU (meaning me or you or any member). And then I found out that some of the gals I meet for lunch on an irregular basis had been reading eBooks for a while . . . and then I tip toed in to eBooks and I really have been pleased. I like my print books, but I like eBooks and audio books, too. I think one former community expressed it well in saying something along the lines that publishers are really bringing us STORIES, and that's what we're buying. Some of us prefer our stories in traditional print book form, and some of us will take our stories in whichever format is working best for us at that time.

And Kelley!! Yea, you, being first!!

Once I'm up to speed on what I'm doing here, I hope to have some animated discussions on the alternative formats. I also plan on getting info out to you as soon as I can. Just give me some time to get my bearings, please.

Wayne, I am looking into

Wayne, I am looking into getting a Kindle. I love e-books and I find myself reading more e-books than print books these days.  Penn, I wish I had found e-books sooner but I am glad that I did find out about them.  I like them because I don't have to go digging around for it when I want to read it.

Tiffany

I have a Kindle and I love it! It is so easy to take anywhere and I have pages of books just waiting for me to read them. My kids gave it to me last Christmas so I've had it over a year now and love it more all the time. My friend was telling a funny story this evening at dinner. She was supposed to meet her cousin from out of town. She was waiting on a call from them and reading. She went to look for her purse to get her phone couldn't find her purse, forgot about needing to call cousin, went back to reading on her Kindle. It finally dawned on her about 30 minutes later that if she didn't have her purse she didn't have her phone either. I thought it was hysterical that she made sure she got her Kindle but left everything else at home. I can't imagine not having it now. Good luck with your research into your book reader and if I can answer any questions please don't hesitate to ask me.

I agree with Wayne...

I've got a Sony too & I really don't notice that I'm not reading a pb - I've even caught myself lifting my hand to the top right to turn the page!

I liked the look of the Kindle but, unfortuantely, they are not available in Canada - something to do with our telecommunication regulations regarding the wireless feature.  I've been really happy with the Sony, of course, 2 months after I bought it they announced a newer one!  It's a touch screen but I'm thinking I might not have been happy with it anyway - I'm so anal - I would hate the fingerprints on the screen!

Thanks, I've heard nothing

Thanks, I've heard nothing but good things about the Kindle and the Sony Reader.  I think that will be my next big purchase, I've seen the Kindle and I love the look of it.  I like that I can have my books right at my fingertips.

Tiffany,

Do be sure to check on book availability - with the Kindle, don't you have to buy only thru Amazon?  Sony was like that up until July 2008 but they added firmware so now you can download and read any .pdf book.  So I can even borrow from the library and purchase books from Harlequin and take advantage of free book offers.  If you can only purchase for Amazon - the $ could add up over the years.  I don't want to influence you because I really wanted the Kindle (at any price!) but now that I've got some ebook experience I'm glad I didn't get tied to one company or one type of format for the books.

Good luck with your research.  I will tell you that I was considering a small laptop instead of a PDA or a reader (this was before Sony added the firmware) - the ASUS Eee was recommended to me by a number of techies as it is a very small laptop but a bigger screen than a PDA and would be comfortable for reading.  I could only find it online, not in retail so it wasn't something I pursued, then the firmware announcement came out and Sony won the bid!

Elle I love my Sony and

Elle

I love my Sony and was delighted when they upgraded the firmware...I too felt a bit cheated when the new model came out just after I purchased mine, but I'm sort of glad I purchased the 505...and yeah, I can download from any where.  And on the 1st February I will have a March book already read since I can get my book right here from the eharlequin.com stores.

And don't forget the frequent free books offers.  From Sony and eharlequin.com, I got quite a few over the holidays...

Now, I'm hoping the 16 books for the Harlequin Celebration will also be available in ebook format....

I know have 120 books, plus the 100 free classics which I got when I purchased.  I'm a Literature teacher so you know I was in seventh heaven from that offer!

However, I believe that which every readers you chose you're in for a wonderful experience.

A book is not the format, it's the words that take us on that wondeful journey into the someone's life.

OMG, Deb, that is hysterical!!

Deb told this tale:

She was waiting on a call from them and reading. She went to look for

dawned on her about 30 minutes later that if she didn't have her purse

Hi all - but BECAUSE the book is not about the format

and I want to spend money on books not tools to read the books, I can't understand why you have to spend so much money on ereaders, why they're so expensive, and why they don't just create ONE basic model and GIVE IT AWAY FOR FREE with the first ebook you buy

okay have extra gadgets that are clip-on, plug-in to add a light or whatever, but I've met a lot of people who think it's ridiculous to spend the money on something that is of no basic use without books you still have to pay for

unless you like spending money on gadgets, but that's a whole different kettle of fish

ElleJay, thanks for the

ElleJay, thanks for the heads up about that.  I did not know that, I actually thought that I would be able to download the free reads from Harlequin on the Kindle.

When I find hear about

When I find hear about ebooks, I did wonder why the price was so expensive since they were basically empty...but we don't know the kind of technology needed to creat something like that.  Then I realise it's just like television or a DVD player... We buy the empty instrument that played the DVDs and from which we watch television... It's like suggesting that we should get a DVD player free with our first rental or purchase of a DVD..

That's why I'm pleased with my Sony.  The 100 free classics that I received are worth the cost of the readers.  Multiply 100 by approx $6.00 or more and see what I mean. In essence I got 100 of my favorite books a few of which are on the school's curriculum...and I get to take it to class and show off.

In My Experience...

When Lori hosted the Digital Clinic last year I didn't know a thing about eReaders. In fact, I was trying to get the podcasts to work on my Sansa Fuze. I really liked my Fuze - it opened up the world of audiobooks to me. When I first got my Fuze, I was able to download 5 podcasts (my choice) but then eharl updated and suddenly the subscription I had used wasn't available any longer. No more podcasts. So for Christmas, I asked for and rec'd an ipod Touch. It only took me 5 hrs to download iTunes, but now I get every Podcast eharl posts. Yay!

But you want to know about eBooks...Normally, I don't like eBooks. Although I have a laptop, by the time I'm finished writing, I want to relax in my recliner and read. And get my eyes away from a monitor for awhile. So although I had downloaded some free eHarl eBooks on my laptop for emergencies, I haven't read them yet. I've read and enjoyed some of the on-line reads but, not even half of those available.

When I rec'd my iPod Touch for Christmas however, I rec'd a very pleasant surprise...I can read eBooks on it!

For free, I downloaded the ‘eReader' and Stanza appl'ns. The first included 2 classic books. Stanza, also included 2 eBooks plus I found 4 free Harlequin ebooks to download which I did.

Now, I like ebooks. I can increase/decrease the text and change the page from portrait to landscape.

The only thing I can see the Kindle being better at is the page turn function which I believe they have as a nice accessible button.

On my iPod Touch, I have to slide or ‘flick' to the next page. It's not hard, but it means I always need 2 hands to read with it unless I'm sitting at a table with my head bent over it.

But what my husband really likes is that now when we're driving at night, I can read to him since  I don't need a book light and the small light given off by the iPod Touch doesn't interfere with his driving.

Uploading to the touch

Further to my post above, I had some ebooks on my laptop which I never read but was having trouble uploading to my iPod Touch. I have now succeeded. This is what I had to do:

I had to download 'Stanza desktop' to my laptop. Once I did that, I could pull up my stored ebooks. With an ebook in the Standa desktop windown, I just had to put my iPod Touch on and ensure the WiFi was working. Then I followed the directions on the Stanza desktop website. I had to reset a couple things on my laptop security features but the site walked me through it. It's so easy now. Some of my stored ebooks had an ipd extenstion and others were in 'MS Reader' but I can read both on my Touch.

Just in case anyone wanted to know...

Sony Reader - help!

Hoping this is the right place to post this....  I got a Sony Reader for Christmas and I'm struggling with organizing the books I've downloaded.  On my PC, I imported everything I've bought from Harlequin and Fictionwise into the ebook library that came with the Sony.  I've got everything I own organized into collections on the PC.  Great so far.

Except I can't make it sort the collections alphabetically.  Any ideas?

And then, there is no way to mark a book as read or not, which is fine, except that if you use the sync function it takes the whole collection to the reader, and then I can't delete books I've read off the reader.  The way I buy books, I'm concerned I'll have the reader over full if I don't remove books from it and keep the read ones on the PC only.

So - should I start over with the collections and make two for every collection name - one for own and the other for TBR and then just sync the TBR with the reader?

Or has anyone got any better ideas?

Thanks all!

Lynne

Question for Anita Mae....

Hi Anita!

Some of my stored ebooks had an ipd extenstion and others were in 'MS Reader' but I can read both on my Touch.

I'm curious, the ebooks that you transferred that were in MS Reader, were they secure?  Does this mean you can downloand Harlequin eBooks in MS Reader and transfer them to the iTouch?

If you're not sure, can you do an experiment and go to the eBoutique and from the top right select Minis and Bundles ... there you have the option of downloading some Round Robin books ... these are free and great for experimenting with

my sister has an iTouch ... I'd love to introduce her to ebooks

thanks!

I don't know myself, but this IS the place to ask. I know that a couple of community members have Sony Readers, so hopefully one of them will come by and help. Soon. :) In the meantime, if you figure it out, please let us know.

Katherine,

You're just full of the hard questions, aren't you LOL? Is your sister a booklover? I think that once a booklover discovers all the alternative formats, s/he can't help but dabbling in at least every now and then. I, of course, have dreams of winning the lottery and traveling around the world with my eReader. Now, I just need to start PLAYING the lottery LOL.

ereader...

So I downloaded the ereader, followed what few instructions it had, and it seemed like I was good to go.  But then it downloads my ereader books as an unreadable file... finally figured out how to open those in the ereader format via browsing for it (since it didn't readily give me that option!) and now I'm stuck with wondering how the heck to save the books!  Normally I save them on a flash drive but for the life of me I can't figure out how to save it anywhere that other in the downloaded file it was placed in.  I'm sure there is a save as option SOMEWHERE but right now I don't have have the patience to look for it.

Lynn

I can't sort the Collections on the PC in Alphabetical Order but when they sync to the reader they are automatically placed in Alphabetical order.

When I've read a book, I transfer them from the library to a My Books folder I have created under Main Folder on my PC..(the onc that you personalise that contained, Document, Videos, Music, Downloads etc...

Or you could create a READ Collection and when you've read a book transfer it from the Collection there are in to that one.

I hope I am making sense.

Interesting Debi.... I

SmileInteresting Debi....

I may not totally understand what the problem is...but I will try to help.  When you download the file, does it give you the option to save or save as?  When I download, I always download to a specific folder so I can find it later.  I think you should be able to do this as well??

They are unreadable files by clicking on them, but will work once you add it to your any Ereader library.  And you can copy and paste the files to a flash drive or card (thats what I do, to read on my phone.) and then open them up on another computer or phone as long as you have the unlock name and card number.

For adding the books to your Ereader library...maybe these steps will help:

1. Open Ereader

2. Goto the "File" Menu on the upper left of the Ereader program and click it

3. Click "Add books"

4. Browse to find where you have the ebook stored, for me I have created a folder titled simply "ebooks" where I save my files to as I download them.

5. Click on ebook you want to add, then click "add."

6.  It should now be in your library.

If it is an encrypted ebook, then clicking on it now is when you will have to unlock it.

Let me know if this helps, or if I totally missed what the problem is. I really want it to work for youSmile

Take Care,

Tammy

Okay, I read what you said again, and looks like you figured it out.

So the problem is saving.  If you know where the books are via browsing, you should be able to find them again, right?  SImply copy them from the folder they are in, and then paste them into the flash drive folder.  The files will be able to get opened from another computer, so long as the other computer has the Ereader software on it.  I hope that makes sense?

sort of, but it never gave me the option to save as.  Hmmm.... I'll experiment more when I download another one and see what happens then.

That does make sense.  I was trying to make it more complicated than it needs to be I guess.   After all, once I've read a print book, I don't keep it by genre, but by author.  As long as I keep maintaining my library spreadsheet I'll be able to find them again Laughing

The Kindle

makes it easy to sort and send read books back to the Amazon library. That's a plus for me or I'd have about nine pages of books on my reader.

E books can be fun or a problem

Two years ago for my birthday my husband introduced me to e-books. He found a site on-line and ordered several books that were on my birthday list that just happened to be available on e-books and saved them on a disk and presented them to me. It was easy for him because he didn't have to go to the bookstore and great for me as some of the harlequin books were out of date and no easily accessible unless I sent away from the. I've gotten used to order the books online and receiving them right away. That's the fun part.Smile

Here's the problem part. Last week I had problems ordering one of my e-books on-line from one of my regular suppliers and decided to try another service. I am on a Mac computer and like to order adobe files that are in pdf format. Not realizing that the company using the format adobe meant anything different than I was used to getting, I found that there was a new format of online e-books. I had to download a new program called Adobe's new Digital Editions. Okay so I download the free software and tried to install it. The only problem is the software doesn't work with my system software. (It does have a mac version, just not the version of my system.) In this case it wanted a higher version of system software than my laptop couldn't use. If that was my only computer available it would have made purchasing the book a waste of money. Luckily for me I have another computer at home where I could change my system software and use the special software to read the book. Here is where you can get the software if you are interested.

www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions.

Now this all said. Here is my other problem with this service. From what I can tell, and please correct me if I am wrong, but when I downloaded the book I essential received a receipt for the book. Then I turn on the software enter the receipt and can read the book. The catch is I never have a copy of the book. It is in a database that is accessed. only if I am online. from the company I purchased the book from. So, while I can go back and read the book anytime, (up until a point on some sites I understand), if the company goes out of business I lose the chance to read the book. This to me isn't owning a book I paid the same amount of money for as the book I own as a pdf that I can open at anytime.

I realize that there is a lot of pirating going on out on the web. But just the same, for a person who might read a book over again next year or five years from now this isn't an option for me. If I want to borrow a book I'll go to the city library and get it for free. There has to be another way.

adobe digital editions

Roni, I don't know where you downloaded the books from - but I've got several books that are in adobe format, that I've bought from Harlequin and Fictionwise.  When I download them, they open the Adobe Digitial editions automatically.  But from there I've copied them to my reader, as well as importing them to the reader using the reader's software.  I've also used the same software to read the books on my computer, even when not using the internet.  With Fictionwise or the Sony website, I can go and download the book again, but there is definitely a complete file on my pc.  While I haven't been buying and downloading ebooks all that long, I haven't seen anyone else mention just getting a 'receipt', or having to be on line to read.

But speaking of libraries - many of them now have ebooks or audio books that you can borrow and return.

I <3 eBooks...

I must admit, I do enjoy eBooks, but I think that's partly because I love my laptop and I'm constantly on it.

But don't think that diminishes my love for actual books any. I still buy waaaaay too many books and have a new obsession with Hardcover books. There's just something so relaxing about cuddling up with an actual book rather than a computer screen, no matter how much I love my laptop.

Hey y'all. I've been

Hey y'all. I've been reading eBooks for a little over three months, and I LOVE them. I use my iPod as a reader. As soon as my phon contract is up, I'll switch to the iPhone so I can have one electronic device to lug around. :-)

This has certainly been a learning experience. The whole PDF, Digital Editions mess was frustrating. I still have three books on my computer I haven't read because they're digital editions. I'll read them eventually, probably this summer when I have time to read on my laptop. I was shocked since the file said PDF that it didn't open as a reguiar locked PDF file. I'm glad Harlequin explained that on their site. I figure I'm not the only person who ran into this problem. I hope the Harlequin bookstore starts getting their books in eReader format. I have no problem getting them from other outlets, but it would benice to be able to get them a month early like I did with paper books.

I was interested to see Stanza reads MSReader formats. I had no idea. I'll have to go check that out.

I'm excited about eReader format but surprised it's not available for all books.

I do still read paper books that are borrowed, but I definitely prefer eBooks. For the first time in ages I don't have piles of books. Yesterday we were iced in and I could still get one of my favorite author's new releases. Because of the whole instant gratification thing I have to be careful with my book budget though. If I'm not careful I'll spend way too much money!

Thanks Penn for hosting this board and telling me about it! I'm looking forward to reading more.

Edited to add: I e-mailed Random House about Delicious not being available in eReader format, and they said it's the retailers' faults the boks not available in that format. Interesting. It just shows how little I know about how the distribution of e-content works.

Sony Reader sorting

Hi Lynne - I'm a little late to the chat but I'll put in my 2 cents worth also.

I know what you mean about sorting - it doesn't do quite what I would like it to!  I have a number of collections on the reader (by genre) and the same in the library.  One in the library is "books to blog" and then I transfer them to the Read folder.  I try not to keep books I have read on the Reader because with no blurb I end up starting them again, over and over!  I have one collection on the reader called "re-reads" - this is for those books you love to read again and again at any time.  Right now I only have a few in there - the Twilight Saga and Linda Howard's Death Angel.  I don't mind if I accidently open them up to re-read!

Good luck with the reader - I love mine but the "librarian" in me wants things in alpha order!

~ ElleJay - Team member of Novel Obsession

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the pleasure is having lots to do and not doing it!

Ipod Touch/iphone

Can you transfer the adobe DE books to the sony reader? A friend told me the sony reader is not compatible with imacs. That is a bummer.

I'm an imac user so I downloaded ebooks from eharl in adobe digital editions. Well the first time I didn't mean too, I also thought it was a regular pdf. I don't mind DE, but I do not like that I can't transfer this format to my portable device, my ipod touch. I can't convert it using stanza, ereader, or uploading personal content onto fictionwise. If anyone knows how to do this can you let me know, tell us here or email me?

Perhaps someday, if I can afford a Sony Reader, I can upload my adobe DE books there.

Also, when I downloaded the free books in ereader format, they would not open with Stanza or Ereader on my computer. Stanza wanted a password to unlock it, and Ereader said I needed a newer version of ereader 2.7.1. I have the most recent version available on the website.  I couldn't even find a 2.7.1.

I love reading books on my ipod touch. I often use the black background with the white letters. I hope eharlequin comes up with a format I can easily put on my ipod. Maybe next year I can get a Sony Reader, but in the meantime, I'd like to be able to read the ebooks I bought.

Stargirl  That's not

Stargirl

That's not true.  In November 2008, Sony upgraded the reader's firmware, so that it accepts those file. For example I download my abode files from the eharlequin.com store and the automatically download to the digital Editor...However, a icon for the sony reader is there and you can automatically transfer the abode version to your Sony reader all with the simple click of a mouse.

Wayne

Stargirl,

As far as the Adobe DE info goes, I'll let Wayne and the other Sony users address that. I remember when they were able to get Adobe DE books onto their Sonys -- so excited they were! :)

I do not have a Sony reader, well, b/c we live on one income. But also b/c we are a Mac family, and last time I asked the Sony Reader rep (in December), they still don't have a device that will work with Macs. She did say that they're working on it. DH and I have discussed either putting Windows on our new-to-us-but-used Mac or getting a Windows laptop, but haven't done it yet, so the Sony reader is still not an option for me.

FWIW,

I see that Stargirl is having difficulty getting the eReader format from here to work for her this morning. Can the rest of you try it and let us know if it's working for you and if yes, what she might try. And if it's not working, details on your system and what happened when you tried?

Thanks so much!

I checked out HarlequinCelebrates.com, too.  Niiiiice . . .

I won't be around again until this afternoon, so y'all will have to check everything out while I'm gone and let us know what you think!

Woo Hoo! I now have more

Woo Hoo! I now have more books too read too. This time in eReader so I can read them on my iPod! I'm so happy. :-) I hope this means the next new H/S releases will be available in eReader, too.

Stargirl, to get your .pdb files to open on your iPod in eReader, you need to upload them to your personal content folder on Fictionwise. Once you do that you can download them to your iPod just like always. Hope that helps. It took me a while Tuesday to figure it out.

Wow, Great FREE eBooks!

Thanks, Harlequin!!!!

I don'tt see MobiPocket.

I downloaded eReader 'cause I thought Mobi wasn't a choice.

What's ePub? I downloaded the first book in each format to see what works where.

MobiPocket WILL be a choice

It was a choice the first few hours, but there were technical difficulties with it, so they took it away and will put it back up there when they have fixed it.

Good to see you here ChrissieSue!!
