It's All in the Listening - Audible Adventures

Like most of you I am a book-a-holic. If given the
chance I probably could sit and read all day, no
questions asked, no glares issued.

Unfortunately my reality doesn't usually co-operate.
Kids, jobs, tasks, they all eat into the time that I'd
love to set aside for my addiction.

Imagine, if you will, how thrilled I was to discover a
hands free medium that allowed me to savour a great
tale while travelling, working, dealing with the million
issues running a household brings.

This is what I want to share with you; the world of story available whenever, wherever.

Welcome to the world of Audible books. Check out our current reads.

Add some SPICE to your life.

audible

I LOVE Audible! It gives me a great way to pick up audio books at a very inexpensive price. And though I understand production costs of audio are quite a bit more than a paperback, I REALLY wish Harlequin would release at least one book from every line every month in audio.

Re: audible

I agree with you Kelley!

I learnt to love audios ...... and I'd love to be able to listen to more of the categories ..... or give us some more of the classics by Linda Howard or those yummy SEALS by Suzanne Brockmann Smile

Hey ladies, great to see

Hey ladies, great to see you.

Having fun poking around?

It's old man, it's snowing, the old man is snowing.

Hey Lorie :D ..................................

I've just discovered that lovely edit CSS option below, so now it's so much easier to read what I'm typing as I'm typing it!  LOL .......... bummer though that we have to make those changes everytime we want to post

Kelley, I have a question? ...... what is that a picture of in your signature? .... it's very dark on my end and I can't quite make it out .... though it does stand out and grab your eye Wink

well ... this all doesn't have much to do with Audibles ..... so I best get on topic!!  LOL

Lorie, I love my ipod .... I just wish I could figure out how to listen to an audio book and type up blog reviews at the same time Undecided  Wink

audio and blog reviews.

LOL, if you figure that out Katherine I'll be first in line to know.

I read threads while listening to books.

audio and reading ......

HOW??? ..... please tell me how you can listen to an audio book and read threads at the same time???? ....... I need to know this!!

don't you miss things, either in what you're reading or what you're listening to?? .......

I'm always reading and watching t.v. .... and I miss so much of the t.v. program that when the show comes around again on reruns I'm insisting to DH that we haven't seen it yet!  .... he likes to roll his eyes and then tell me to read another book!  LOL

You wouldn't believe..

...how proficient we become at multi tasking as hosties on eHarlequin...in fact you should see us during the Open House. It's not unusual to have 3 - 4 MSN windows open to chat with hosts and deal with issues, and be checking email for lost authors, leading a chat and asking deep questions, checking the boards and running a game and wrangling children and pets all at the same time!  Heck in the middle of all that I seem to remember taking a phone call from Dream in Chicago O'Hare airport!

Imagine Dee with her two twin flu babies on top of the whole thing too!

We be GOOD!!

ROFL!!  Jayne!   ...... and I can see you doing all that too!  LOL

I do know how to multi-task ... (tell me a woman who doesn't ;)  )   ..... and it's amazing how much of a conversation I can eavesdrop on, er, accidentally pick up on while I'm typing away at the office ... but somehow listening to an Audible and typing defeats me, I tend to have to rewind on the Audible to get what I missed

I suppose practice makes perfect, :)    .... I'm just not practicing enough! LOL

Sure did! Granted I'm now just seeing a lot of the posts people wrote right before i went on vacation but I'm SOO excited about these new boards. Laughing

>Kelley, I have a question? ...... what is that a picture of in your signature? .... it's very dark on my end and I can't quite make it out .... though it does stand out and grab your eye

Thanks Katherine. Sorry I'm just answering. i just saw the posts today when the new forums offically opened! The picture in my signature block is one of the "signature" graphics for my book review website CK2S Kwips and kritiques (who Debiw and now crystalrclass also belong to). It's a pair of Irish step dancing shoes on a green background with my name splashed across it. And I forget so have to double check, but I do believe i set it up so if you click on it, it takes you to the home page of the website. Cool

Hi Kelley

Thanks Kelley ....... I can see the image better now in your signature ... Irish step dancing shoes? .. so does this mean you're a master of "the dance"?  ... cool Smile

dance master Kelley

>so does this mean you're a master of "the dance"?  ... cool

LOL Don't I wish? No I've never danced a single step of Irish dancing. Our website has a Celtic/Irish theme since we opened on St. Pat's in 2006. So the shoes fall into that theme.

wow I think i killed this thread. LOL

so I'll try to bring it back to life. LOL. So what's everyone listening to presently? I've got Through a Crimson Veil on CD in my car playing and on my MP3 player I'm listening to The Historian for a buddy read.

But I discovered The Historian is not a good one to listen to at work sice I need to be paying closer attention than I am at work so 'm having to backtrack a lot.

what are we listening to?

I'm starting to go through the Stephie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, just finished the first book, which was great!

I agree with KatherineT - I would love to hear Suzanne Brockmann's Seal series on Audible!

Lynn

LOL Kelley

Yes, it did get awfully quiet in here...

I've just downloaded Tempted by Megan Hart to listen to. I'm going to listen to the Susan Wiggs Podcast though, before I open Tempted.

Hey Lynn, thanks for sharing that. I'll include it in my next email.

Misplaced my ipod nano ....... and Harry Potter ...

I am soooo frustrated! .... I misplaced (hopefully not lost) my nano ... and I so wanted to do some listening this weekend while the "game" was on  ..... don't know where it's gone too ..... last I recall seeing it was just between Christmas and New Years ...  Cry

well, if it doesn't show up I'm getting myself an ipod shuffle while the other one hibernates

... Harry Potter ... I have the first four books in print and would like to get the last books as well .. but I was wondering if I might enjoy these more as audios .... anyone out there who have "listened" to the Potter books?

thanks!

Audio...

I'm new to audio (only really started since listening since less than a year ago or so) but I'm enjoying the additional book time I get since I'm in the car a lot with my job.  Listening to THE HISTORIAN right now.

I'm new too ......

my first audio was Linda Howard's MacKenzie's Mountain .... yummm!   .... and then I heard the next two MacKenzies  :)

good listening!

Audio

Katherine, aw, my sympathies. I’ve misplaced my shuffle… it’s in my bedroom, I know it is. I remember having it in my hand when I went to bed late one night but I haven’t seen it since. LOL. I hope your nano shows up soon.

I’ve got the Harry Potter books in hard cover.  I’ve read the first 4. My oldest rented the most recent movie, but I made myself scarce during it because I intend on finishing the series at some point.

Debi ~ That’s my favorite aspect of the audio books, the added opportunities I get to read, when I otherwise wouldn’t.

Um, you know, I don’t know what my first audio was… It’s weird, I mean I know that audio books and eBooks are different formats than print, and I am aware of that, while reading, but because I flip between formats and books, I don’t catalogue which format I’ve read it in, unless I’m reviewing it right after reading.

I just finished Guardian’s Keep, in print and I have Stray by Rachel Vincent sitting on my nightstand as my next print title.  On my PDA there are 2 audio books and about a half dozen Spice Briefs. Now that I have some time to read again, I will listen to a book while doing things I otherwise wouldn’t normally read during; walking, exercising, grocery shopping, washing dishes, folding laundry, or while skimming email or other various simple tasks on the computer, the list goes on.  I read ebooks the way I would a paperback, and whenever I get a chance. I do love that I can read at night without the light bothering the hubby and it's great that I can travel with dozens of books by dropping the pda into my purse.

my first audio and Harry Potter

Funny you asked about Harry Potter. That was my very first audio book. I've done the entire series in audio. Well, except book 7. I actually read the hard cover of that one, though I put the audio in when I couldn't read the book. I never actually read the first 6 books in print. Did them all in audio and saw the movies.

Jim Dale who is the performer for the series is AMAZING! He does a fantastic job making voices for everyone. If you ask me, I could not have picked a better first book for my audio experience. Jim Dale is the reason I'm an audio fan. I think I got alittle more out of it that way just ebcasue he is so amazing tht I picked up on sp much I probably wouldn't have skimmed over and not realized were I reading them myself.

My current audio reads are Dean Koontz's The Darkest Night of the Year in the car. and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova on my MP3 player everywhere else. Both books ahve good narrators. The one performer of Historian (it's done by a man and a woman) I have listened to before (Paul Michael) but the other two performers are new to me.

Thanks Kelley ...........

that's just what I wanted to hear!  ..... I think I'll keep my eye out for a deal on the HP's on audio, or check with my library ... I've never gotten audio's from the library, can they be put on an ipod?  ... I'm not in any rush to listen, but now that the series is finished I'd like to start them maybe this summer

still can't find my ipod nano ..... dh said he'd order me a shuffle for my b/d, and I may have to take him up on it ... with my luck the day after I'd find my ipod, what a waste of a bd present! .... well not really, the shuffle would be much handier for working in the garden

I just hope no one lifted it from my car ... I have a terrible habit of not locking the doors when I go to the post office and such ... and yet, I have this impression that it's in the house somewhere safe  LOL

I only had a Shuffle for a short period of time and I still have it but never use it since I got my new one.

You can't go straight from CD to iPod directly. You have to run it through the iTunes program to do whatever conversion it needs first. I never tried to burn CDs to my iPod but I'd think you can do it. i have burned CDs to my player I have now though with no problems. but it's a different brand so i don't need iTunes.

Thanks again, Kelley ....

when I sort out my ipod problem I'll give it a try and see what happens .... obviously, because of the ipod I have iTunes

the thing I like about the shuffle is that it has a pretty strong clip for holding it in place .... perfect for me when I'm doing yard work  ... my nano I usually wear on my belt, and that sometimes gets knocked about when you're working physically  ... I'm not a fan of those armbands

I like the shuffle for the very same reason, and yes, you can convert cd's to ipod compatible files.

Audio Books

I have only recently discovered audio books......and I'm hoooked!  I drive an hour one way to work and I love the fact that I can listen to books instead of just wasting my time!  I also bought a shuffle and have subscribed to Audible and Simply Audible.  I love the shuffle becasue I can listen to it while I'm doing housework and at other times when I can't read!

me too! I was amazed when I listed all my January reads and saw how many I finished last month. And probably two thirds of them were audio books. I get sooo much more read in a year through audio.

Exactly Kelley.

I say it all the time but it's true, if it weren't for ebooks audiobooks I'd rarely get reading time.

audio books on a PDA

I might try audio books but the format from my local library won't work with my PDA I don't want to use the laptop for reading I have at least 2 ebook reader programs on my pda and about 60 books. love being able to carry books with me everywhereCool

Hi Tiger

It's good to see you posting again.

I get my audio from Audible.com. With the account I havee , I get 2 credits a month, which I tend to use for hardcover or trade editions, so it works out that I'm not spending any more than I would be if I read them in print.

Amazon buying Audible?

Is this true? Penni mentioned it in her blog that i read today and that's the first i've heard of it. Lorie, had you heard any rumblings abou that before? I'm curious if Audible mentioned to its partners they were thinking of doing that.

Tiger- Most libraries,

Tiger-

Most libraries, mine included, have downloads which use Microsoft Media Player drm (Digital Rights Management) to control checkout time. These can be run on a number of PDAs with the use of an ancellary program. What type of computer and what type of PDA are you attempted to get to work. I use as standards Windows XP computer and a Palm TX

Another audio fan!

I have become such a huge audio fan, it's great to see I'm not alone! Smile I decided to give the Audible subscription a try because it's a no-commitment offer and I've had no regrets.

I just love the fact that I can get more story in while I'm still doing other things...in fact, my primary reason for hitting the gym is to hear more of the book I'm listening to, lol! (Hey, I've almost hit the 10-lb lost since the new year, so whatever works, right?)

It's so pleasant to be listening to something other than the same music over and over again. I'd like to listen to it when I'm doing dishes or other stuff at home, but right now I have to pay attention to my 3-year-old or I'll have more to clean than what I started off with. ;)

As far as I'm concerned, audio is seriously the bee's knees and I couldn't be more excited about a new format to still get fantastic stories!

I'm having problems with

I'm having problems with that digital rights thing at present. Checked out some books from the library (two Debbie MAcomber audios) but when I went to download I got an error about the digital rights. and am now trying to figure out how to fix that. *sigh*

but yes a lot of libraries do that now. my local library JUST started doing that very recently but anotehr library that allows you to get a library card without living in their city has been doing it a while and i've gotten several that way, eBooks and audio.

Kelley  ~  I personally

Kelley  ~  I personally haven’t heard any rumblings about Amazon buying Audible, but even if I had, I’m not always at liberty to say so.

Ketchup ~ First kudo’s on the 10lb drop, especially so quickly. I listen while speed walking, when the weather allows and while doing aerobics when it doesn’t .

Everyone’s been tightening the dmr’s lately since there are so many pirated books running around.

Amazon/Audible

Kelley, that was actually in my paper in the business section.  From what I've read, it's a done deal as they were talking about how it affected the stocks of both companies (and that part I don't remember! LOL)

On Thursday, January 31, amazon announced

that it had agreed to buy audible. It was on the internet and in the papers that I saw. Really. If you google "amazon audible" and select "news" (rather than "Web"), you'll see various articles from respected sources in the US and the UK (and some sources I haven't heard of but it's a mix). The first reports that I saw were out of the UK in one of its major economic newpapers.

I suppose that it could fall through (no idea what regulatory agencies the company might need to please) but the reports all talk/write like it's a done deal.

Penn

Amazon / Audible

well, Amazon has been linking to Audible for quite awhile for audio downloads, so this isn't surprising

I wonder what will happen with Audbile's strong link with iTunes?  .... hopefully, that will not change

I doubt it Katherine. The folks that run Amazon aren't stupid, they're not going to mess with what works.

Thanks Penni. See, that tells you how out of the loop I've been these past couple of weeks.

What's everyone listening to?

I've been busy catching up on the podcasts ... I've really been enjoying them

now I'm ready to start a new audio .... so what are you listening to? .... or have you finished anything recently that just knocked your socks off?

I've put a couple back in the library system

I started DROWNING RUTH b/c the print version has been in my tbr for at least 2 if not 3 or 4 years and I thought that I should get it out of my tbr and audio would do that. I might get it out again later but right now I wanted something different. I'm not sure that I'll ever get back to it. What I'd really like is to find someone who remembers reading it and for them to give me some spoilers.

I also put back A WIND IN THE DOOR by Madeleine (sp?) L'Engle b/c she herself is reading it . . .I had listened to snippets at audible.com and not liked it much but thought that I should give it a "real" chance. For the most part, it's okay but she doesn't do pauses between character changes (when one character says something and then another character talks and visually you know you're changing speakers/characters b/c of paragraphs and quote marks). Professional readers do a better job with the pauses and voice changes . . .our library doesn't have any versions read by anyone else, so I don't know what I'll do. Maybe wait til my kids are old enough and we'll read it together?

I have C.E. Murphy's November release still unlistened . . .I might do that one this week, but probably not. I'm in the mood for something light. Maybe some chick lit . . .

Penn

Hi Katherine and Penni.

Hi Katherine and Penni. Thanks for sharing your reads.

I understand what you mean about the reader making or breaking the book Penni. I too find that the professional readers do a better job.

I just listened to Tempted by Megan Hart. Also on my list is her book Broken but I understand that you need to be in a light mind set to read it because of it's emotional depth. I have it  downloaded but haven't cracked the cover yet. Not that I'm depressed or anything, just not in the right mood for a book that'll make me cry.

Next I'll probably listen to Spies, Lies and Naked Thighs by Jina Bacarr. I just adore the premise of it and I've enjoyed her first two Spice releases.

And you know, I'm asked a lot, about erotica in the audible format, but I enjoy it.

Hi Penn! Hi Lorie!

I found my nano!  .... LOL ... and now I have a shuffle and a nano ...... well, I'm sure the shuffle will come in handy for when I'm working in the garden ... much easier to clip on

I have to get back into "listening" .... so I downloaded the Carla Neggers collection .... I'll try one of those, I think ... they're abridged but that's good in away to get me back into it ..... it's been since the T/G since I listened to a book

they should do a collection of the briefs as audios ... it might bring more to erotica ..... some how to me erotica is best read  ... though I was thinking I would probably enjoy Megah Hart better as an audio because of the first person POV  (not good with that)

~~ KatherineT ~~ I'm a Harlequin Addict, and I'm proud of it!
~~ Quiet Canadians ~ 2008 Book Challenge Blog

You know, I have people ask

You know, I have people ask me all the time how I can read erotica as audible but once you get over the initial reaction of being "talked dirty to" they're just like any other books.

I haven't found my shuffle yet. I think it fell behind my headboard. I'll have to wait until later in the spring to check.

LI on auio?

I'm wondering if any of the Love Inspired books will be put on audio soon?

It takes us an hr to get to the city and the kids travel with me. Now that I've found audio books, I really enjoy listening to them in the van. I bought a couple inspirational audios and the family really liked them. My 9 yo ds even said he couldn't play his gameboy b/c he was so interested in the story.

But, we finished those. So I went to the library but couldn't find any inspy's. I did find a Sandra Brown which the kids thought funny because we have a teacher by that name in our local school. But when I played it in the van, I scrambled to shut it off at an out-of-the-blue remark not meant for kids. Luckily, it was 10pm and the kids were all sleeping. I kept listening but 20 mins later had to shut it off just in case.

The last time I went to the city, I continued with the SD audio but in a CD player using earphones. The only problem is - I don't think this is safe. I think it's on the same level as using a cell phone. In fact, I was checking the track number and didn't even hear a car beep behind me and the audio wasn't even speaking at the moment! Scary!

So, any plans on the LI line going audio?

Anita you might try

Anita you might try some of the young adult books. James Patterson's Maximum Ride series is great to listen to with some sound effects too. Also I listened to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series which begins with The Lightening Thief. I've listened to quite a few childrens books and they're great. Some you can download from my library so maybe yours does that too.

Thanks for offering

Thanks for offering suggestions Deb.

I'll ask Anita.

Anita, Deb has an enviable audio collection

not to mention the ones she's borrowed from her library. She might be a good source for you. She also teaches in an elementary school, so she's given me some good suggestions for my kids and me to listen to around town. I can forward an email to her if you want an in-depth conversation with her. My public is rmg _ 303 at yahoo dot com (without the spaces and with normal symbols for at and dot).

Think about classics, too. We've listened to The Chronicles of Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (a Young Adult = YA book series) last year but you need to know that the h does take lovers outside of marriage during the course of the 4 books (not the first one, though). It's all behind closed doors and there's actually not much sexual tension but I don't know what you're ready for your kids to be exposed to so I wanted to warn you about that.

When you're actually at the library, you might ask the librarian for YA suggestions. You might also search at audible.com and then see what your library carries that piqued your interest. Audible has different search features than my library's catalogue system, so I use both to help me find new things.

Good luck,

Penn

Anita ~ I'm told that at

Anita ~ I'm told that at this time there are no plans to offer LI as audibles.

There are all sorts of options for audible books available as the ladies have mentioned, including inspirational non-fiction and general non-fiction.
