Ask Lorie and Jayne

Welcome to the 100,000 Book Challenge!

Some of you are old hands at this, but there are a great many more of you who are new to this process.

Last year we doubled our total number of book challengers, which is great news...but, it made it a whole lot easier for messages to slip through the cracks and go missing.

That's why it makes sense to keep all of our questions in one place so we don't miss anyone.

So, got a question? We'll try to provide the answers....

Add some SPICE to your life.

Book Reviews, Teams

I've added one book review, kind of just testing this new format & site.  How do I add anything to favorites & how does our team work now?

You are all going to get so many questions! I'll try not to be to much of a pest.  Really!!  Wink

Take care, happy reading,
Donna M, Dream Team member

Hi Donna

To add a discussion room to your favorites, you click on the link right next to the one for a new comment at the top of a page. To add a person to your favorites, click on their name (in blue) near the top of one of their posts, then just click on adding them to your list.

I hope this helps and doesn't confuse. I'm good at that.Embarassed

Thanks Kim.

Re: Counter

Cynthia, I just checked your blog and you entered two as book reviews and two as blog entrys   .... in order to count for the Challenge you must post them all as book reviews ..... if you go to your blog, and redo the blog entries as book reviews .....

 hope that helps!

Formating tools

Hi Lorie .... are we going to get more formating tools? ..... right now the only options on my tool bar are the Bold, Italics, Underscore, Strikethrough, unordered list, ordered list, link, unlink and smilies ...... there's no Word clipboard, and no option for adding pics  and no changing font colours

thanks!  Smile

buttons and climbing

Katherine ~ I don't know, I will ask though.

Donna ~ No, I didn't but it suits my hyperactive personality.

Image code

I would very much appreciate knowing the correct image code to use on the new site. The old code does not work, or at least it does not show in the preview.

editing tools

Merri, right now the only editing tools we have are the buttons ..... B = bold .... I = italics etc ... to the smilie  ..... I made a post to Jayne to let her know that we don't have any of the other editing tools

html tags DO NOT work here .... nor will they ... there is a special html tool that is not being offered here to regular members ..... I suspect that the Hosties have privileges that have not been passed on to us ..... hopefully this will change

for now, we'll just have to work with what we've got ... until things settle in  .... lots of time Smile

images

I think that's a glitch.

Last I'd heard you guys were supposed to have image buttons too.

I think, in the meantime, if you disable rich-text (right below the comments box) then the standard image code should work.

We've always had special buttons Katherine, comes with the job.

there is no option to ......

there is no option to disable rich text, Lorie ........ as I mentioned earlier we have very limited editing tools   ..... just the plain jane (hey Jayne Smile )  bare bones tools

that was the case at first on the Beta site too until Jayne gave us some tools for our tool box

Thanks for the help,

Thanks for the help, Katherine! I've fixed the problem.  There has to be an idiot in every village . . . since I got half right, does that make me a half-wit?  (Remember the well scene in The 10th Kingdom?  I still laugh when I think about it.)

Cynthia

re: there is no option to...

Yep, no button to disable rich text for me either.

I'm happy enough now just knowing there's supposed to be one...eventually Laughing

This may be a silly question, but...

... on the book reviews, I've noticed that some people have a blurb under the title of the review ~ actually I do as well on my second review.  But all the rest just show the title, that I reviewed the book at such-and-such a time.
So my question to all you other savvy computer people ~ Lorie and Jayne I really, really don't want to bother you 'cause I know that you're probably being run off you feet... figuratively speaking of course ~ is:
"How do I get that little blurb-y thing back under the title?"

That's it... and now I'm going to hide in embarassed silence.  EmbarassedSealed

You are doing such a great

You are doing such a great job, thanks to the hosties! I do have a questions as I'm still trying to navigate through. Does anyone know if there is a place to view the list of bloggers, kinda like what we had before? Or do I have to scroll through the book blog page where the big list is to find certain people's blogs? I'm sure there's an easy way for me to find out, I'm just having problems. Thanks!

Blurbs and Lists

Kathy ~ I don’t know how you can fix it, I’ll see what I can find out though.

Tracey ~ At the moment, you’re going to have to scroll, because while I do have a master list I haven’t put it anywhere y’all can access it.

Blurb...

Thank you Lorie!  And I'm not in a hurry... I know that you must be going crazy... or wanting to?

Star, Katherine is correct, that is how you'd do it.

Thanks Katherine.  I’ll add your question to the list, but for the time being, it’ll have to stay as is until we make sure all bugs are squashed, etc.

But Lorie

I gave you three options. Two in the sentence and one in the parentheses! :halo: So I naturally assumed you were referring to the two in the sentence. Do you mean something different? :batting eyelashes:

RE: Disable Rich Text

You will see "disable rich text" under the comment box to the left. It is is blue lettering. I have to use that in order to bring up a comment box that I can post in. But I don't have smilies or any other options. For some reason, when I come to make a comment, I can't get into the comment box. I see the smiles and italic, etc. but just can't get my cursor into the comment box. Then I saw "disable rich text" and pressed it. It changes to "enable rich text" and brings up a comment box that I can type in which is better than nothing.

I have no clue what rich text is. LOL I just know that I can post when I enable it.

Margie :)

Morning gang.

Sadhbh ~ I was mistaken, please don’t use the team name as a tag, apparently it’s throwing off the coding on the side bar.

Christa ~ I’d wait, just in case.

Gemmom ~ I’ve got to test the code, which is on the agenda for this morning. People have been telling me there is a problem with one or more of them. If it works I’ll send it out, if not then I’ll report it again and we’ll go from there.

Margie  ~ Actually I think you’ve disabled it, which is why it now gives you the option to enable it.  I’m wondering, while we hunt that bug down… if you disable it, type your message, preview it, then enable the rich text… you should have a typed message you can add smilies to. It worked for me, and it’s worth a shot for you to try.

Good Morning!

Lorie or Jayne could one of you pop by Suziheaps blog reviews ..... I think she's posting "regular blogs" as book reviews?    .... I don't mean that as a tattle ... I think we have to clarify some things about the "types" of blog entries

I was thinking that it is so easy to click on "book entry" when you really want "blog entry"  ......... working on a "custom" acctg program with the developers, we set up a control ..... how that control would work here would be .... when you click on "book review" a small pop up comes up and asks if "do you want to create a book review?"  or it could happen when you hit "submit", just a verification that this is a book review ... this would give the blogger a chance to hesitate and confirm their intentions  ...... I know, we all hate the extra clicks, but I think in this case it may be necessary ...

....... also, we need to discuss how to post a grouping of "minis" or "novellas"   ....... what do we put in the title bar?   ...... it's easy when the novellas are published in an Anthology, as the anthology title would sufice ..... but do we put all the titles in the title section when we have a grouping ....... or do we simply put ... "Five eBook minis by various authors"  that sort of thing

mini's and more

Hi Katherine.

Ha, I'm ahead of you for a change... were you sleeping? Wink Susan and I have spoken and she's going to fix that.

I think, since the rules have changed just enough, and since not everyone comes in here to play and read, that I ought to send out a group email...which I will as soon as I've finished sorting out your teams.

As far as titling the reviews for mini's and novellas go, I think that yours is a good option, ie... A mix of short stories... or, 4 spice briefs or the like.

ROFL Lorie!

Actually, I was busy being enchanted by that lovely video on the RSS feeds page that explains how to do that .......... that company is ingenius! ..... that explained it all so very easily   ..... (maybe eHarl should make a few videos like that to explain things to us technically challenged!)    ....... someday when you have loads and loads of time, and before next October -- you really must see their video explaining what a Zombie is!  ... I laughed so hard DH thought I'd lost it ROFL  .......... in case anyone is interested in knowing what I"m talking about, there's a video explaining RSS feeds on the RSS feeds FAQ .... it's made by a company called Common Craft who offer other very informative videos .... some are just plain fun!

.......... okay I rambled SurprisedLaughing

Lorie, I do think the techies should add a "confirmation" of sorts to make bloggers think before they post  ...

Throwing off coding

Sorry about that Lorie, maybe it's the tag that's causing it, or maybe it's just the cutting and pasting, but that's all I was doing, so I can't even undo what I was doing "wrong" cause I don't know what it wasUndecided

I'm going to try saving that file as a .txt file to see whether that helps my book reviews, and change to Arial rather than TNR

but I'll only do one just in case

Is there any particular font you prefer me to use?

Adding a blog to my favorites

Heyla

I would like to add a blog to my favorites.  Not just a specific blog entry, but the entire blog (e.g., Sadhbh's blog) so that I can find it when I want it. Is this currently possible?  If not, can you ask the techies nicely to make it possible?

Thanks

FF

FF you can see Sadhbh's entire blog ............

I'm sure you've added Sadhbh to your "Friends" .... on her profile page over towards the left there is a heading that reads "Most Recent Blog Posts" ... simply click on the "More" button and that will open ALL of Sadhbh's blog entries, book reviews and regular blogs

hope that helps!

RE: throwing off coding ...................

Sadhbh when we were kicking tires we discovered that pasting from a doc. file usually didn't bring the doc formating .... esp. if it was done in Word ...... that's what the little icon with the clipboard and W is for -- if you're usuing Word paste on to that clipboard first  .... that will remove any Word formating and make it acceptable for the new boards    ........ or if your pasting from another rich text doc use the eraser icon to remove formating

unfortunately, this site was designed to use the formating / editing tools provided, and not ones from other programs  ...... personally, I think that's a design flaw, if external formating can effect a site that significantly

teams.

Hi Ann.

First, Welcome.

We're still discussing teams. It's possible we may decide not to go with them.

If we can provide teams we will, but if not, then sorry, but we do hope you'll continue to blog with us if we don't, because our main goal with this challenge is to share a love of reading with each other, and those less fortunate.

margie

You're welcome. Laughing Glad to help.

whole blogs versus snippet teasers

Most of the new community is fantastic and much nicer and easier to navigate and makes for more "community" feel.

However, the main Challenge blog is like those dreaded teasers only multiplied and moving at warp speed.  Once the dust has settled, it would be really nice if there was something in between the main Challenge blog and the buddy system to see whole blogs which does not rely on the buddy system or a mere snippet from the Main challenge to draw people to new bloggers and Harlequin newcomers.  Half the fun of the 2007 Challenge was discovering new bloggers and new books and lines which get lost in Main Challenge blog merely due to the activity level and the teaser form.
