Guidelines and Rules for the Book Challenge

Welcome to the eHarlequin Book Challenge!

Our goal for 2009 is to continue the challenge begun  to read 100,000 books.   In 2008, we achieved an impressive (count yet to be determined) books read from the combination of online and offline participants.   A commitment was made to donate to the National Center of Family Literacy an equal number of books read.  We have been honouring this commitment and intend to continue on in 2009 with the hopes of reaching our 100,000 book goal.  I do hope you'll decide to join us.  Together we can make a difference and battle illeteracy.

Our rules are easy....

  1.  We ask that a minimum of 50% of the books you read and review come from one of the Harlequin imprints.  A Harlequin imprint is any book you can presently purchase here from our Book Store ~ Harlequin, Silhouette, Spice, Mira, HQN, Kimani Press, Steeple Hill, Red Dress Ink, Luna, Worldwide.  Also any book published by Harlequin Enterprises that is now out of print.  For example, Harlequin Everlasting, Silhouette Bombshell, Harlequin Love and Laughter, Harlequin Code Red.  If you have a question on what qualifies as a Harlequin imprint, please ask.
  2. Many of us like to read our favourite books over and over again.  For the purposes of this Challenge, we'd like to encourage you to discover new books.   Therefore, our next rule is no re-reads, or rather there must be a minimum of one year between readings for a book to qualify for our Book Challenge.
  3. For the purposes of the Book Challenge and to be fair to all our Challengers, we've set a policy that a book is called an individual book if it is aproximately 50,000 words or approximately 200 pages in length.  So for shorter stories, these need to be grouped together in one review so that they add up to the word count / page requirement.    To further clarify this rule, see my examples below.
  4. A book is published in many ways.  We will accept any of these formats.  Print (in all the forms, trade, mass market, hardcover), eBook (formated for any eReader), Audio, and Manga.  Often, I enjoy listening to a book and also reading it later in print.  For the purposes of this Challenge, you may review both formats just do it in the same review or add to a previous review.  Only one format per book is allowed.   ~~~ Online reads, though we encourage you to enjoy them, they do not count towards the Book Challenge.
  5. We're all very busy and often don't have time today to write up a review but we want to make sure the book is counted for the Challenge.   You are welcome to post a brief review with just a sentence or two to say that you enjoyed the book or that the book wasn't to your reading taste.  This is perfectly acceptable.  Later you may wish to come back and add your full review, please do this as an Edit to your original review and not as a separate blog entry.  Once you update your reivew, simply add a comment to it and this will bring it up to the top of the Recent Posts list.
  6. Content ~ Reviews are such an individual thing.  You may be as detailed or as brief as you chose.  We would prefer that you add some of your personal feelings about a book, but some have difficulty expressing those feelings in words.  That's why we've added the optional rating system.  You're welcome to use it.   For those that enjoy sharing your thoughts on a book, please remember to always respect the author and the readers of your reviews.   Sometimes a book may trigger strong emotions which can be considered as a good thing.  Just remember no attacks -- not on the author, the author's beliefs, or the beliefs of others.  Reviews that cross this line will be removed.
  7. In order to receive the monthly incentive discount, you must be an active participant of the Challenge.  Which means you must post on a regular basis.   If you wish to take a break, just notify us and we will put you in an inactive file until you are ready to return to the Challenge.
  8. Okay .... the very last rule is the most important one.   Have fun!   Please don't stress that your review may not be as good as someone else's.  We're not competeing with each other.  We're competeing with ourselves to read more and share the books we read.  This is why the Challenge started.  So read, share the books you've read, and have fun!

Guidelines for what makes an individual book

Regarding the Harlequin eBook mini's ---

Spice Brief (5,000 - 15,000 words);  Harlequin Mini (5,000 - 15,000 words);  Nocturne Bite (10,000 - 15,000 words); Historical Undone (10,000 - 15,000 words) ...... as the actual word count for each mini is not provided and page counts are often unique to the type of eReader software you use, to make it easy for every Challenger, you may review any FOUR Briefs, Minis, Bites, Undones to make one book.  This can be a combination, for example, Two Bites, an Undone and a Brief.

BiteBrief miniUndone

A combination of any FOUR ~ Bites, Briefs, Minis, or Undones ~ adds up to one book for reviews and counts.

Regarding eBook Mini's from other Publishers --

Mini's are popular in the eBook format.  Often the site you purchase the story from will declare the word count.  Many publishers also provide a key with the word counts for their various forms of short stories.  Please be fair to your fellow Challengers and try to group your short stories as best you can to be an equivalent to our word count for a full book.

Regarding Children's Books / Young Adult / Graphic Novels --

You may review the books you have read to your children or help them write up a review of their own to add (how cool!).   In these cases, I suggest you keep track of the books you've been reading in notepad or word and once you have enough stories to add up to our word count equivalent for a full book, post it then.  You can group them in themes, or just simply have a group of shorts.

Penn wrote a review that is an excellent example ... The Magic Tree House Books 1-4 by Mary Pope Osborne

Regarding Volumes of more than one Book --

Harlequin, as well as other publishers, sometimes release a book that has more than one full size story included.  Often this is a volume of previously released individual books.   Harlequin also did this in a past imprint know as Harlequin Duets.  Harlequin Mills and Boon does this with their By Request volumes.  When a volume contains more than one full length individual story, you may review each story separately for the book counter.

Harlequin Duet

This is a Harlequin Duet, which contains two full length stories.  For reviewing and counting purposes, review each story individually.

Review #1 ~~ Making Mr. Right by Jamie Denton (Harlequin Duet #43)

Review #2 ~~ I Waxed by Legs for This? by Holly Jacobs (Harlequin Duet #43)

By Request

This is a Harlequin Mills and Boon By Request.  It contains three full length stories that were previously published individually.

Review #1 ~~ His Very Personal Assistant by Carole Mortimer (By Request Jan. 2009)

Review #2 ~~ In the Banker's Bed by Cathy Williams (By Request Jan. 2009)

Review #3 ~~ The Takeover Bid by Leigh Michaels (By Request Jan 2009)

Regarding Anthologies --

An Anthology is a book that is a collection of short stories which can be written by the same author or a group of authors.  Normally the stories contained in an anthology follow a common theme.   Anthologies are ONE book, each short story in the book would appear in the same book review.

Anthology

Review this collection of short stories as ONE book.

Review ~~ Winter Heat by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Jade Lee, Anna DeStefano

These are rules and guidelines that hopefullly make participation fair for all our Challengers.  I trust you will find them to be easy to follow, and understand why we've compiled them.   If you'd like further clarification on any of the above, or feel that something else should be added, please post in the comments below for our discussion, or email me, Katherine-eHarlequin

I'm assuming...

which may be a scary thing LOL, that series like Presents and the Medicals still count as a book by themselves.  Not sure of the word count for any of them but they are less than 200 pages....

Not so scary ....

you can assume away! .... well, on that score anyway! LOL

YES ... the Desires, Medicals, Presents and Romances are classed as "novels"  ..... even though most are printed on about 189 pages, the typeface really accommodates our word count of 50,000 words or there abouts  ... esp. with the Medicals where many have such teeny tiny print!  Wink

Hi Katherine...

How are groups going to be treated this year?  Will they be like 2007 where we had "real" groups as opposed to 2008?  Is there going to be a listing of all participants individuals & groups again like 2007?  I found 2008 more disconnected from everyone else even though all reviews were posted under the Challenge.  I missed the more "togetherness" feeling we had in 2007.  I'm on the fence about joining in 2009!  Undecided  Part of me wants a break from reviewing and part of me wants to join the Challenge again!  I guess I'm in a kind of wait & see mode!!

Merry Christmas to all.  I'm not sure if I will be back here again before Christmas!  Whatever you do and whoever you are with enjoy the day.  Stay safe if you are traveling.  Smile  Innocent

Take care, happy reading,

Other types of books

Hi, I was wondering about Graphic Novels and Children's / YA books. Is there a way to list  these (obviously in a big group) so they can combine to reach the 50K (or roughly)? Or maybe at the end of the year list them as a heading - Graphic Novels, Childrens (I'm tending to read to my young relatives) lately.

Thanks Smile

Children's / YA / Graphic Novels

Hi Eleni

Yes .... you would combine these similarly as outlined above for the Harlequin Mini's ... in the title of your review you could put ... Five Children's Stories ~ all adored!  .... or Three Young Adult by so 'n so

Penn wrote a review that is an excellent example ... The Magic Tree House Books 1-4 by Mary Pope Osborne

Excellent question, Eleni .... I'd also like to mention that all genre of books are acceptable for the Challenge ... even our beloved Cook Books!

Are you adding your name on the Sign Up for the 2009 Book Challenge?

Children's / YA / Graphic Novels

Thanks for your response Katherine and I'm so glad we can add those in. eg just finished Neil Gaiman's Coraline and will be reading a couple of his other children's books, so I will put under 'Neil Gaiman books'.

I just finished reading the Graphic Novel - Anita Blake: The First Death (volume which has issue 1 & 2)  - do you think that could have it's own entry? I'm going to read The Guilty Pleasures issues in future. So I could add it to that?

And I haven't been reading as many non-fiction but the few I did this year have made it to the list. Every book helps right?!

I have added my name to the 2009 Challenge. I have so many books on my TBR pile. 2009 is the year I conquer it! (always good to dream  Laughing  )

re: Children's / YA / Graphic Novels

Hi Eleni

Some members write up their reviews in notepad or word as they read ... this is particularly helpful when reading the shorter formats as this helps you keep track of them until you have enough to post as a full book  ...

as far as the grouping adding up to the word count, I'm going to have to rely on our Challengers to be fair in their estimates of how long the story is .... so for your Anita Blakes, if the count is there, yes posting them together is great, if not, please save them and add another short(s) for posting

your grouping of shorts need not follow any theme, they can just simply be that -- a group of shorts.

I love that we can add ANY book we read .... which reminds me I have two cookbooks I can review!  Smile

So nice to have you joining the Book Challenge!

Ummm....

when does the counter on my profile reset?

I was wondering the same

I was wondering the same thing too Debbie. Especially after the confusion last night where it said zero for my personal counter then I came back 5 minutes later and my 2008 count was there again. I don't want to post any new books until the personal counters are rest in case we lost the new books in there as well. I know they techies are on vacation too for the holiday but since they had the new book challenge counter set up yesterday and I thought briefly our personal counters were reset I wondered if they'd be ready today after all.

Well...

I discovered one book from 2008 that I forgot to post so I posted it and it added to my 2008 total, not my 2009 total.  So I'm holding off on posting anything else till I hear something.

I'm waiting

too. Will just list them on my pad till I see we're a go for 2009. I hope more people read all the rules as I saw quite a few books posted that really shouldn't have been; such as Beedle the Bard which should have been listed with something else as it's too short.

I was wondering the same

I was wondering the same thing as well.  I think I am going to hold off until I hear something but I am going to keep track of the reviews.

Happy New Year, ladies ....

I posted on the Ask Katherine thread regarding the Book Counters  .....  as stated there, our personal counters may not be zeroed until next week .... not to worry, when it is set up your counts will be based on which Challenge you've selected to post your review

in the book review template you now can select the "challenge name"  ... the default is 100,000 Book Challenge ... if you click the drop down you'll see the Book Challenge 2009 option .. just select that and your review will be on the 2009 counter .... you can go back in and edit your reviews you've posted to change them to the correct counter

the 100,000 Book Challenge (2008) will be locked soon from further posting ... I'm not sure when this will happen

Can I direct you to the Ask Katherine thread for these types of questions?  ...it will benefit more members if I answer in a central location, plus much easier for me to remember where I've answered and what I've answered to  ...  I'd like to keep this thread for discussions related to the Guidelines

thanks for understanding

Yes, Deb .... there is very little different in these guidelines from the past Challenges .... word count has not changed, though I have clarified things I hope   ..... this is why I requested everyone come to this thread to read the guidelines before they've signed on for the Challenge

Katherine!  I couldn't find that thread and this is the only one I could find so the link helps.  I know, I SHOULD know how to navigate the forums but I don't....

Not a problem Debbie ...

I'd just like to avoid repetive threads and blogs like we had with the last format change in November ... not only does it make my job so much easier, but it helps everyone who is looking for answers when it's not all over

I suggest you mark the Ask Katherine thread to your favourites ... it's a fairly active thread so it'll probably be on the first or second page for easy access

Perhaps..

a blog explaining what fits each forum would help those like me.  I know I avoid some sites like RT because there are 10 zillion forums and people get irritated when a question is asked in the wrong one.  Frankly, I am just not organized enough to keep track of what goes where so maybe a short blog on it would help?  Or maybe it's just me and if that is the case then, well, keep redirecting me as necessary!  And yes, I did favorite it.  Not sure why I hadn't done so in the past and was a bit frustrated earlier when I couldn't find it so that was the first thing I did when I did find it!

Okay, rambling now... not enough sleep! LOL!!

Hmmm...

Hi Debbie ...

If I get a header back in the Book Challenge review module, I'll post there how to find the Book Challenge Forum, and what the discussions are there  ..... this was given in the email I sent out confirming your sign up for the 2009 Challenge .... the titles of the discussion pretty much explain what they are about  as well as the content of their headers  ... I will add a sentence above though to visit my other discussions

*sigh*

I think I'm just forum-challenged. I don't think in so concise of terms but more abstract... which is why I've avoided the forums for the most part and stick to yahoo groups and the blogs here for discussions.  I think I just need to face that forums aren't my thing and learn to live with the fact that you'll be redirecting me as necessary. Embarassed

Not a question

But a comment...it was so much fun seeing the cover for I Waxed My Legs for This?, Katherine!  I adored that book...and that cover is one of my all time favorites!

Looking forward to more great books this year.  I just started That Summer Place anthology!  Hey, it's cold here in Erie and I'll take any warmth that I can get!  LOL

ah, Debbie ..... take a minute right now and click on Book Challenge Forum   ... from there, open each discussion thread and simply "Add to Favourites"  .... then when you come to the Community, click on "My Favourites" on the right side bar from time to time ... if there is new content, it will show up .. as the forum discussions are static (they don't disappear if they aren't commented in) I thought it best to keep all important information about the Challenge there

Happy New Year, Katherine!

Hope you're having a lovely year so far.

I didn't finish listing the books I read in '08, so my question is, should I go ahead and get them listed before the counter trips over, or just wait until the new list sets in?  Thanks!

Oldies but goodies

I tend to pick up old novels, Betty Neels and Emma Goldrick for example.  Are they and others now out of print still valid as hq imprints?

2008 Reads ...

Hi Hope

The plan is to lock the 2008 Challenge from further posting .... I'm not sure when that will happen, probably in the next few days .... if you want your reads to count in 2008, you may wish to post them if you can  .... in 2009, I would think they would be considered as rereads and then the 12 month rule would apply

Yes, they most definitely qualify as Harlequin imprints.  Any book released by Harlequin or Mills & Boon past or present would be considered a qualifying Harlequin imprint

Debi

I'm with you and don't get around to a lot of the forums they're just too many and don't have the time. I spend way too much time on here as it is which causes me to buy way too many books. I don't need more time searching the blogs I would never get anything else done.

can i make a general

can i make a general comment/suggestion here? I'm going to post this a few places as it is applicable more than in just here.

First off, Katherine, I really appreciate all the hard work you've put into making all these preparations and trying to keep everyone informed about various things. I know tons of other folks are as well, if comments I've seen along those lines elsewhere are any indications. You've put a lot of time and effort into doing all of this and we do appreciate it all. Especially while youa re trying to still learn how to maneuver through all the moderator stuff yourself.

I'm apologizing in advance because there is a "but" in here, but don't let that negate the above comments.

You did a great job detailing things but (yes, here it is) there is TOO much information in some of these blogs and forum headers. I know the number one rule we are given at every single job I've ever had is the "KISS - Keep It Short and Simple" rule. Too much info means the really important stuff gets lost in the reading a document or listening at a meeting.

As I'm looking at some of these details you've posted, I am sitting here wondering "when the heck am I going to find time to read all that?" And "I have to reread all that stuff every single time I need to look something specific up or refresh my memory on something?"

Everyone who participates here, including all the moderators, have very full and busy lives. So it would be really nice to have short simple concise information that doesn't require loads of scrolling to read everything. If all the info is crucial, maybe break it up into separate forums or blogs so people have less to weed through to find what they need? That would still ensure all the information is out there without having to fish quite as much.

The D2K Paranormal Junkies

~eHQ April 2008 Member of the Month~

You have some valid points, Kelley ....

And I do agree that often more is just more

I keep hearing people say that they don't know how to maneuver in the Forums ... so spliting up discussions in MORE discussions is actually not a good thing  .... everyone has their own way of doing things, and I can point out easier ways but it's always up to the person to try them out for a bit and see how they go ...

as far as the info, above and in my other headers .... I'd love to make them shorter ... but then I'd spend all my time here answering questions for clarity instead of reading the blogs and the reviews  .... that's why I've bolded the important sentences that apply to each rule  .... I'm hoping your eye catches that, but I"m also hoping that everyone who signs up actually takes the time to read these guidelines  .... they are given so that the Challenge is fair for everyone who wants to participate  ... and also remember we have quite a few brand new members who have never participated in the Challenge

I could do blogs ... but you know after awhile they just fizzle out and we need to have these here as static  ...

I'm open to ideas

can i make a general comment/suggestion here? I'm going to post this a few places as it is applicable more than in just here.

Kelley, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't cross post to various threads .... this is considered as spamming and contravenes our Community Guidelines   .... also, it is part of the guidelines to try to remain on topic and to use the appropriate discussion ... I've deleted your cross posts to the Sign Up thread and to the TBR Challenge thread ... surprisingly the discussion that this should have been posted to, Ask Katherine, you didn't post there ... I appreciate you would like to get my attention ... I'm available by email .. it's readily available around the site, and clickable from my signature  ... are there any other cross posts that I may have missed?

thank you

Katherine,

The guidelines say that a book should be approximately 200 pages to be counted as a book.  However, this month, the focus is on Desire, and the mini-challenge also focuses on Desire.  However, I bought the One-Click Buy, which includes 6 Desires, all of them around 180 pages (one of them 179 pages).  Does this mean that I will need to combine two of the books together to qualify as one review?  (Is it possible that ebooks wind up with fewer pages for the same number of words than print books do?  I would do a word count to find out myself, but I can't copy and paste the words into Word.  ebooks don't permit copying.)

It seems a shame to have the mini-challenge focus on Desires if none of the current releases count as single books because, in the current market, some folks can't afford to buy two in order to get one review.

I can answer

that. The Desires, Romance, Medical lines, and any others that aren't quite 200 pages still count as one book. It's only the bites, briefs, short stories, children's books, etc. that you have to combine to equal one book. I read that in the above post so for further clarification on that read the above post from Katherine.

re: page count of Desires ...

Thanks Deb for jumping in  ... I appreciate the help

JV ... the post Deb is referring to is one I made two down from the heading....

YES ... the Desires, Medicals, Presents and Romances are classed as "novels"  ..... even though most are printed on about 189 pages, the typeface really accommodates our word count of 50,000 words or there abouts  ... esp. with the Medicals where many have such teeny tiny print

okay, so we are allowed to review and add books to the challenge even if they are not published from harlequin...? Yes to all of that! ... remember the book length rule though ... if a book is less than 50,000 words (aprox.) or 180-200 pages (aprox.) than you need to combine a few to add up to the count

you can review a cookbook if you like, just as long as you've read it cover to cover :)
