New thread ....

Seeing as we're mid-year, I thought I'd tidy up and give us a new clean thread  .... if you're looking for something that was discussed earlier in the previous Ask Katherine thread you can find it in the 2009 Book Challenge Archives folder.

woohoo

Hi Katherine...

The new thread looks good.  After awhile there is just to many pages!!  I just posted my latest read on the Challenge.  It is interesting seeing all the styles of reviews, some say to much, some nothing & some of us are in between!!  Smile  I try not to get to long winded with my review but there are times I just want to gush about a book.

I hope all is well with you.  Enjoy what is left of your Sunday.

Take care, happy reading,

Question...

Hi Katherine,

Earlier today I just joined a website called Gravator which gives you an avator for posting on blogs, etc.  Can I use that here?  It would help if I was more technology savvy!!  Wink  Thanks for any help you can pass along.

Take care, happy reading,

Donna

I just joined a website called Gravator which gives you an avator for posting on blogs, etc.

totally not an answer to your question but...

Be careful with those kinds of programs/websites. 9 times out of 10 they embed spybots and adware in their sites and the stuff you pull from the sites. that stuff can seriously slow down your computer if too much gets on your computer and it can open back doors for viruses and such. Do you have some software on your computer for identifying malicious software and removing it? Antivirus software doesn't necessarily catch that kind of stuff.

Sorry to butt in, but I wanted to caution if you weren't aware of that since when I first tried one of those kinds of websites, I found out the hard way what the can do to the compuer. I couldn't figure out what was wrong and a computer whiz friend is the one who told me about it and got rid of it for me.

Avatars ...

Thanks, Kelley for your very wise advice ... one really does have to be careful with some of those sites

Donna .. I'm not familiar with the site you've mentioned ... however, if you are looking for a graphic avatar like what the Quiet Canadians are using, then email me your general discription and I'll see what I have in my avatar file ... maybe we can come up with something that you'd like

Thanks Katherine...

I used a picture from my recent trip in Oregon to create my avatar.  I am usually leary of these kind of sites but I did it through the Plotmonkeys blog and I was trusting that they wouldn't use it for their fans if it was going to cause problems.  If I start having trouble I'll get rid of it.  Luckily one of my friends is a computer tech at the nearby junior college and he takes good care of me with any computer problems.

If I was better with technology I could use one of my pictures to put on my profile page.  I just thought since I did that I might be able to use it here.  It might be kind of fun to have a graphic design like you have only tailored to me, of course!!

By the way I just posted two more books on the Challenge so I am all up to date for now!  That said I will soon be finished with another book.  I don't seem to be accomplishing much else.  Surprised

Take care, happy reading,

Gravatar ...

Hi Donna .... I found a few minutes and stopped by the Gravatar site ... it sounds like a great service ... the platform that this site is based is listed there so I'm going to ask our techies if we can enable the service here ... it certainly would make things a lot simplier!

Thanks for pointing me to the site ... I'll let you know what I find out

However, in the meantime, I'd be happy to find you a graphic avatar from my file

Hi Katherine...

Thanks for checking out Gravatar.  Let me know what you find out from the techies.  eHarlequin gives us such good service with our hosts & the techs.  I appreciate all of you.  It is such a pleasure to be involved with this community.  Smile

If I were going to have a graphic design, it should reflect my love of reading or the outdoors.  The ocean is one favorite places, I never get tired of going to the coast.

Thanks for all your help.  Now, I need to go post another book to the Challenge!

Take care, happy reading,

New to eHarlequin

Hi Katherine.  I am new to eHarlequin and saw the 2009 Challenge. I would like to know if there is a certain year that the books have to be published or if any year will qualify. I recently had several books given to me that are older books and I was wondering if they would qualify for the challenge or if it had to be books recently released?  I loave to read and am excited about posting reviews. Thanks Sherri

Sherri

I'm not Katherine but I can answer your question ~~ any books count for the Challenge even non Harlequin and any year counts.

Hi Katherine,

A quick question -- or maybe two. . .  Smile

I went looking for a book that is supposed to be out in October.  Usually by now they would be available, but for some reason this month they aren't.  Will they be out soon?

Also, I wanted to put in an order last night -- 11:30 my time, so it would have been 1:30 a.m. Ontario time -- I typed in what I thought the new code might be, but obviously I guessed wrong, so I tried the Aug code.  Neither worked.  When will the new code be out?

Your help is always appreciated!

Editing this in:  Actually I just got back from checking out some of the other lines, and where I looked, the Oct. books are already there.  But in the Harlequin Medical line they're not.  Don't they come out a month ahead in ALL the lines?

Baffled. . .

Early lines/imprints

Most line are there a month early but not Medicals, Spice, Mira, HQN, Luna, World Wide Mystery

Donna,

Christa got it in one. Not all the lines come out a month early, just most. Because of where the MedRoms are edited and printed, they simply can't be available a month early. Sorry about that (I really am, as it's one of my fav lines).

Thanks, Penn, Christa,

Thanks, Penn, Christa, Jessicue, and Katherine.  I guess it was just too late last night.  As soon as I got my head on straight and had a look at it by light of day I realized what the problem was.  For both things.  Embarassed  I had one letter wrong in the code, and the book I was looking for was an M & B, not a Har. Medical.  Embarassed

We'll blame it on the pain meds.  I've got an infected tooth, and I just have to ride out the storm as I've had reactions to every antibiotic I've been put on in the last 30 years.  So I'm "riding high" these days.  At least today it's feeling a little better, but now it's starting to swell.  I look like a pocket gopher with only half a case of the mumps!  Do you know how hard it is to walk around half the day trying to hold an ice pack on your face and still see where you're going?  SurprisedSealed

DonnaH
WAYRN--2009 Challenge

Ouch, Donna ....

I do know what you are going through .... I have this tooth that likes to act up every once in a while  ... there's a rinse you can buy at Shoppers Drug Mart, it's an antibiotic mouth wash ... it does help  ... depending on what other meds you are taking, if you can take ibuprofen along with your pain meds this will help with the swelling  .... the pharmacist can help you too on which are the best over the counter meds to take (he'll also have the pain meds with codeine if you need them)

(((soft hugs)))

Thanks Katherine.  Now

Thanks Katherine.  Now that the pain meds have kicked in again for the morning, I'm feeling more human.  I've been taking Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Acetylsalicylic Acid (plain old aspirin).  Oh, and my Gabapentin, which is a prescription for nerve damage.  The dr. told me I can take them all at the same time because they work on the body in different ways.  I sure hope he knows what he's talking about. . .

Sadhbh!  Long time no see --er, hear -- er, um. . .  anyhow, how've you been?  How many books have you read so far this year?  Wink

Trouble uploading photo

Hi Katherine,

I'm new to Harlequin, so I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I've tried to upload a photo for my profile, but it keeps getting rejected, telling me that the photo needs to be of a certain size. How do I make a photo the correct size?

Thanks,

What!?  I thought you weren't joining the challenge this year.  Where can I find your stuff?  Never mind, I'll go hunting -- it has to be somewhere.  I'm about a quarter of a year behind, I'd say.  I don't even think about it any more, I just do what I can.

Marialina, hi and welcome.  I think you can find the directions to the picture problem, um. . .somewhere.  I have no idea how to do it, either.  I got someone else to re-size my picture.  Smile  Good luck!

Donna,

Sadhbh didn't join the challenge, but she is sending in her reads to Katherine so that they count toward the charity goal. She has reviewed 5 books online toward the challenge goal, but she's been pretty swamped with regular life. She had to go back to work FT (from 3/4 time but that extra day at work I'm sure is a huge difference), the family keeps her busy, and so on.

You can find Sadhbh's blog quickly by clicking on her blue name, then once you're at "her" screen click on "more" under "Read My BLOG!"

Books for Literacy

I love reading harlequins and the HEA  (trying to find the non explicit books these days).

I love the coupon for the 10% discount we receive on our book orders.

I love the fact that Harlequin is donating books to help those who can't afford them in order to help literacy but I am wondering about the moral question of content.

Many lines are sexually explicit, and  focus on the lives of the rich powerful and ruthless.  In some lines lust is highlighted and often manipulation.

So are the vulnerable members of society being given these books or the more balanced lines re home and family, tender romance etc.  Is there a mix?

I've been contributing feeling my numbers could contribute to the more wholesome book numbers  (well that's what I tell myself)  but I have no idea whether any of those are being sent.

So I guess I am asking about what lines of books are being sent out?

"The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a Heav’n of Hell, a Hell of Heav’n." John Milton

No hearts means I have chosen not to give a rating. My system? Five hearts or no hearts.

Hey Lauren!

So nice to "see" you :)

Yes .. you are right .. the focus of the NCFL is "Family" literacy ... so on I believe a quarterly basis, Jayne goes through the list of books available and makes choices from the Home and Family, Tender Romance, and Inspirational lines ... the more passionate books would not be suitable   ... in fact, Jayne was just going through the lists about a week ago for the next shipment :)

this is a great question and I'm glad you asked!
