Introduction and Rules
Hello Everyone,
Congratulations on joining up for the 2008 - 100,000 Book Challenge.
Our goal this year is to read a total of 100,000 books thanks to our combined Community team and individual efforts. When the reading challenge ends on December 31, 2008, Harlequin will make an unprecedented donation of an equivalent number of books to the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) to assist them in their challenge to fight illiteracy.
At the end of the year, you will have have helped to find a solution to the literacy crisis, and not only will you be able to reflect back on the volume of books you've read, but you will have become a something of a connoisseur with your very own catalogue of favorites and a deeper appreciation for the choices you have made and will make in your future reading. You will have made new friends and compared notes on reading with people from around the planet, and become part of a greater experiment in reaching out and celebrating the love of reading with other book lovers like yourself on a worldwide scale.
As for the rules, we’ll keep them simple.
We ask that a minimum of 50% of the books you read come from one of our imprints: Harlequin, Silhouette, Spice Books, Mira, HQN, Kimani Press, Steeple Hill, Red Dress Ink, Luna, and Worldwide Library.
Any of the lines, from any of our imprints, are acceptable. If you have a question about something qualifying, please feel free to ask.
We'll accept reviews for any of the following formats.
Traditional mass market paperback
Hard cover format
Trade size format
ebook format
audio book format
MANGA format
Anthology of full length stories (counts as TWO books) If two full length books, an average of 200 pages apiece, are published in one volume you may count them as seperate books. To do so you may blog them as two seperate books. One idea is to use the anthology title in the title of both books. For example
review #1 Kiss That Cowboy! (Harlequin Duets, No. 60)
review #2 How The Sheriff Was Won (Harlequin Duets, No. 60)
Anthology of novellas (counts as ONE book)
Harlequin eBooks Bundles - If they are sold as individual titles, then count them as such, if they are an anthology, anthology rules apply.
Spice Briefs - You may count them, but you need enough to make a combined minimum of 50,000 words.
Harlequin Mini's - Again, must total a combined minimum of 50,000 words
To clarify... 50,000 words equals about 200 pages.
You have to be an active participant in order to continue to receive the discount. Which means you need to post on a regular basis.
Each book counts for each reader, once per year. Re-reads will only count if there has been at least a year since the last reading, the goal is to discover new books. Reading an abridged, and an unabridged version of the same book is considered re-reading. Only one will count.
Online reads - While we do encourage you to enjoy them they Do Not Count towards the challenge totals.
We had to designate a one book per book review rule in order to simplify and automate the counting process. All of the book challenge submissions are fed into ONE main challenge blog so that we have just one stop shopping to read all the daily reviews. When you add a book review it will also appear in your personal blog. There is no need to duplicate reviews.
There is no strict formula to follow for your messages, each online journal should be as individual as you are and reflect the journey and your thoughts just as you would note them in a traditional Book Lovers Journal. Although we do ask that you respect the authors and their work.
Now that's not to say you can't say, "I didn't like this book because..." No one likes every book they read, and we do expect you to share your real feelings, but book bashing will not be tolerated. Remember, there are real people behind those pages.
Teams: The team option is to give those who'd like to be part of a team the incentive to try. You are allowed to use your team name in the tag cloud. Beyond that, and the friendship and support it offers, there is no added advantage/disadvantage to being/not being on a team.
If you feel something could be added to this list please include it below and we'll consider it.
Thank You
Read, have fun, and support a worthy cause.

Question about counting briefs and minis
(and other shorter stories too).
You stated as clear as can be that to count them, they must total up to 50000 words before we can count them as one book. Since I don't track in word count myself, but more go by pages, ON AVERAGE, how many briefs would you say equal about 1 book? I know last year people were counting either 4 or 6 together as one book, but I forget which. And since minis are even shorter, would it be, say roughly 10 minis to be one book?
Now of course I'm not positive on this, but in my mind, I equate Spice briefs with the length of a novella (and most anthologies are 4 novellas to a book) and Minis to short story length (which would be at least 10 shorts to a book).
is that a fair assumption?

Anthologies
OK ---- I read "snowbound" an anthology. Do I write a long blog about each story (5 or more sentences) or do I write just a really short blog (one or two line) about each? I know it only counts as one book. Does this question make any sense???????

anthologies and shorts
Kelley ~ about 200 pages equals a book.
Ellen ~ One review, but you can do it in sections, like this
book A, story 1 (review here)
Book A, story 2 (review here)
Book A, story 3, (review here)
Make sense?

makes sense
Yep makes sense. Knew it was suppose to be one review but wasn't sure how to do it. I do better with visuals on how to do things.

Visuals
No worries ellen, it's what I'm here for, and I do better seeing things as well.

How to Start
Hi Lorie,
To start do I sign up somewhere or just post a review?
Thanks,

Caron, to do "Book Reviews"
and be part of the 100,000 book challenge, you need to sign up with Lorie. She has a special email addy set up for that.
While you wait for her to sign you up for it, I strongly suggest that you do your "book reviews" in a word processing doc on your computer so that you can just cut (or copy) and paste them into the reviews. Trust me, it is much easier to keep track as you go along than to try and remember what you want to say about a book from several days and several "reads" ago.

Joining
Hi Caron. I haven’t seen you in a while, have you been hiding to write?
Yes, to join I just need you to email me. ehq2008_challenge@yahoo.com
Thanks Penni.

Thanks very much
Penn, for the explanation and the good advice (and for this sensible way of handling subject lines!). And thank you, Lori, for the e-mail address. Yes, I have been hiding to write. In a house with torn-up walls while we've been repairing moisture damage. I've been so proud of my zen-like approach to the chaos. Or maybe it was just denial. ;)

I've added some discussion points over in the
"How to add a Book Review" forum that I'd like to discuss as a group. I thought about putting it here or in the Lobby but as they're all related to adding a book review, decided to do it there. So please wander by there and put your opinion in!
Thanks,
Penn

zenlike chaos...
Caron ~ it's denial... lol.
You're probably handling things better than I would. We;ve been having electricity issues in my house, so I've been harrassing the people who're supposed to fix it. Of course, if they'd come, the first three times I've called to complain about it....

electricity
Sorry to hear about your electrical problems...a difficult thing to do without! And it's so frustrating to wait for people to come fix things. Hope it straightens out soon.

straighter things
Thanks Caron, for the good thoughts. They seem to have worked because the guy finally came, at the time I was told he'd come, and better yet... the problem is on their end, so it's not going to cost me anything to fix.

Lorie,
that's good news. :)

Hi Christa.
The page count rule would apply for those. If they are, combined, about 200 pages, then count them as a book.

I'm not finding the email to sign up
Can you remind which window it's in? We're having lunch with our little book-addict group on Saturday and several members aren't participating (yet), so I wanted to have hand-outs for them and encourage them. But I need that email addy . . .
TIA,

Hi Penni. Just pass them
Hi Penni.
Just pass them my gmail addy please. I've had issues with the majority of my emails bouncing from the yahoo account I set up for the challenge and so I've had to stop using it.
