The Lobby: 100,000 Book Challenge
As Sammy Newcomer approaches the Lobby of the eHarlequin.com 2008 Book Challenge, a curious hum fills the air. It's not until one of the massive double doors swings open to grant them entrance that they realize the hum is voices.
Hundreds of readers have gathered here, to celebrate a shared love of reading and to participate in an awesome undertaking.
100,000 books are to be read, and in a year.. and the prize... well the prize beyond the enjoyment of great books, is to share the gift of reading with those less fortunate.
Excitement is building, lists are being made, TBR piles are already toppling...
Someone waves to Sammy, gesturing for them to come in to join the fun, and soon another new person will take their place and they too will be welcomed.
Above the throng, sitting at her desk watching everyone, sipping cup after cup of strong tea and typing madly away on her laptop sits Lorie, an odd little smile on her face....

Up to the Challenge
Okay, I think I'm up to the challenge. I have 3 books read and commented on but sitting in a word doc already.
This looks like it might be fun.

YAY! This is so exciting, and I like the new layout, even though it's a tad confusing still.
I've read about... 10 books, and I've blogged 4 of them so far, but I'm having a blast. I forgot how much fun this was last year. Hopefully some of my same friends remember me, or are even still here... =D
Happy reading,

Lorie,
I have already messed up. I was not thinking (how unusual) and I put my reviews that I had in my blog and not the Dream Teams, what do I do now?
Thanks for your help....

Hi Jeannie!
I know what you mean, the first time I looked at the Lobby, I couldn't quite figure out what I was seeing either, but to the left of each new post, there's either a "Forum topic", "Blog entry" or "Book Review" ... it took me awhile, but I did get it in the end...

Hi guys.
Hi Kristen, welcome back. I’m sure everyone will find each other quickly.
Jeannie. The reviews are all on the Book Challenge. Kathy’s personal blogs will be on her page. If you see one of her posts, just click her name and that'll open her poage. You can also search out users on this new site. Just type their username in the search bar and click search, then opt for users.
Susan, I’ll have to see if I can move them, after I get the team blog set up. Don’t worry, we’ll sort that out after.
Hi Mad. Can you do me a favour and do a hard refresh… hold the ctrl button down, and click refresh. Do this twice, it may reset you and give you back your image button.

Hello Everyone, I am brandnew to the Book Challenge this year!
I stumbled over last year's book challenge in the fall and thought, "Wow this is something I want part of". I have added four book reviews and am off to the library on my lunch break today.

Hi Sherilynn.
First, welcome. 4 books at lunch, I think you'll like it here.
Have you emailed me to confirm your participation b/c I don't have your username on my list so I'm wondering if you're one of the ladies who's username I'm waiting on.
If you have, could you help me match a name to an email? If not, could you email me? ehq2008_challenge@yahoo.com
Either way, thanks.

Book Review
Lorie,
I only blogged them, do I need to put them in the review section on the team log for them to go toward the count. I am sure I will understand this by the end of the year (lol). At least this year I will have the team to help me.
Thanks
Susan

What qualifies as a book? I just finished reading this e-book that was 140 pages... is that a novella, or a novel?
Happy reading,

Cheryl ~ If you see a post
Cheryl ~ If you see a post from someone you recognize click their name, it'll take you to their page and you can see thier reviews there. You can also opt for the Blog page and look for people there.
Kristen ~ That would be a novella. We consider a book to be a minimum of 200 pages.

I've added some discussion points over in
the "How to add a Book Review" forum. I thought about posting them here or in the "intro and rules" forum but they're all about posting reviews, so I chose there.
Anyway, please come by and put your opinion in!

Quest
Hi Christa -
I am actually still on my quest to read all Diana Palmer books.
It's tough when she keeps coming out with more! Unfortunately, it seems there are some copies I just can not get which makes me very sad- and I'm still waiting on a few. I'll probably post another list soon ... but once I've exhausted all avenues for DP books, I believe I'm going to pick another author and another quest.
Quest
Always willing to help another reader. What books are you looking for? I might have them. I actually have a couple of dupilcates of hers plus a couple of the older ones.

You know Aliquis... you could post a list of the titles you're hunting in the backlist thread on the book buzz-digital media forum... If they re-release them it'd be in ebook, but you'd still get to read them.

This sounds like fun! I read two to three books a week anyway, and now that I am reading them on my Palm, it is so easy to keep track of them, since they are already on my computer.
I was happy to see we can include non Harlequin books, too, because sometimes I run out of money but must read--so off to the library I go!

hello
Hi y'all! So good to be back here again. Love the new digs and am slowly figuring out my way around. Things around here got a bit crazy last year and reading and blogging fell by the wayside. But hopefully we've turned the corner and back to as close to normal as we've ever been.
Just wanted to stop by and say hello.

An observation
Lorie
I know the techies and the hosties are kind of overwhelmed at the moment, and that you will do what is possible to make the site easier to manage, and that sometimes it is not possible to do somethings. This said, I wanted to observe that not being able to go to one central place for a challenge blog (e.g., an individual person's blog or a team blog) makes the challenge more about reading and blogging than about sharing reactions to the books.
One of the things that most people commented on was the joy of finding other people with the same interests and being able to chat with them about a certain book. It is now extremely difficult to do this.
I know that somethings may not be possible to get here on the new site, but I'm hoping that the solution to this problem is not among the things that are impossible.
Cheers,
FF

book covers
I notice a lot of the reviews are using book covers. I've been successful getting the image on, but I can't seem to be able to type anything beside it. I don't want to waste the space.
How does everyone get words beside the picture?

Hi Anita,
Hi Anita,
Once you've got the image into your Comment box, click on it and then click on the little TREE icon underneath to open up a little dialogue box. This is where you can customize the way the image displays in your message. In order to make the text wrap around the image, you'll need to set the image to align Left or Right, you'll also need to add some spacing around it so that the text doesn't bump up against it. I usually assign a value of 5 both horizontally and vertically. And that's IT

Thanks Jayne! I was able to do it and it shows up when anyone clicks on 'Read More'.
However, there's still a blank space on the main page of the blog. How can I get the first para of my comments to show up there?
Also, is 'my blog' just a reflection of my book reviews? I am changing my ratings from smiley faces/stars to the system of 'pretty good, very good,' etc and was going to make a note of it on 'my blog'. I can't, can I?

Any idea on keeping the text on the main page beside the book cover?

My internet has been incredibly temperamental, so I'm so glad to be able to sneak this post in!

The "new" red marker doesn't show up in this thread either, though there are supposedly new posts. Just so you know.

Okay, the lack of author's name is driving me crazy!
I assume it's a lot more work to add a whole field for the author's name but can someone quick-like change the "Title" to "Title and Author" in the "Book Review" fields? So many challengers aren't putting the authors' names ANYWHERE.
Or are you guys still just overwhelmed by the really big fixes that need to happen first?

On the "new" marker and spot advancement in posts ....
I've noticed that threads that are longer than two pages, the "new" marker is missing and that I am always taken to the first page of posts ....... on threads that have not yet had enough comments made to advance to a second page, the "new" marker is there and I'm taken directly to that spot in the thread
... and I agree with Penni .... it would be sooooo wonderful to have the love title bar, renamed as "title and author bar" .... or give us a separate input for the author's name ........ quite often "titles" are reused in the Harlequin imprints, and it would be lovely to know who wrote a book without always have to ask the reviewer

fixes
Aliquis ~ Yes, better late than never.
Thanks FF
Penni ~ That’s cosmetic. So it’ll have to wait til after. I will adjust the header in the How To thread though, to advise the author name go there.
Katherine ~ We’re working on the chronology of the appearance of the posts, trust me, the staff dislikes it even more than you do.
I’ll ask Scott if perhaps he can add “and Author” to the title thing.
