Mini Challenges
Hello Challengers. I'm so pleased to have you all with us. I'm looking forward to an exciting year.
As many of you know, each month we challenge you, and ourselves, to read from a new line or to a specific theme. We're going to continue with that, and the details of each month's new challenge will be posted here to refer to and comment on.
If anyone has any or ideas for upcoming challenges, please feel free to add your thoughts.
Read, have fun, and support a worthy cause.

RITA Challenge
Hi Lorie
..... I was wondering if we could have a special Challenge once the RITA nominees are announced ..... maybe a Challenge to read as many of the nominees as possible before the awards in July ..... and if the this is a special Challenge spread out over a few months it gives the Bloggers a chance to find the books

RITAs
I think one of the reasons why I love them is that you are guaranteed a great read! LOL .... and I'm always so excited when our authors are nominated

RITAs
Interesting...I've never followed the RITAs before so that sounds like a fun minichallenge!
another idea
Hmm had two ideas 1)titles with numbers, numbers can be 1, 2 etc, one, two etc, once, twice etc, first, second etc.
2) books with one word titles eg. Snowbound, Release etc

ABCs
We could do an ABC challenge to see who can find those hard to find letters :) The A, B, C, etc. could be either author or title.

ABC's
Hi Jenna. Did you want to expand on that? I'm not sure I'm following, sadly the only thing that popped into my head when I read ABC's was that jacksons 5 song...

RE: ABC
Lorie,
I think she means something like this. An A to Z Author and/or Title challenge. I'm participating in this one.
Something like that would be more of an on-going, all year thing.

mini-challenge topics
I really like the topics that guide reading and give us different things to think about as we read. I think some of the topics last year were good at making new people more comfortable blogging and talking about romance because they helped us focus on one thing like the romantic conflict, the hero, the heroine. The bad boy topic where we had to write what our dads would think of the hero really inspired some creativity. Lorie, if you have Lori Devoti's Guardian's Keep, there is a not immediately evident trace of that topic in the acknowledgements.
I guess I would like more of those kinds of topics because they are creative plus I think they helped me to feel more comfortable blogging last year.

I'm glad they helped you
I'm glad they helped you Merri, and I do have Guardians Keep, I'm about halfway into it. I want to devour it, but life/family/work keeps getting in the way so I've been picking it up to read a few pages every chance I get.
Are you the Merri she mentions?

Lorie - I don't have an idea for a new one, but I am storing up books for the New to You challege. I enjoyed that one since it forced me to step out of my comfort zone and I actually found new authors, lines and genres. I think that's a good thing.
See what I read last year - Star's Reading Lounge
I agree on the New-to-You mini-challenge
I think we could have that one twice a year ..... it's great to find new authors .... well, great for the reading experience but not so great on my pocket book as once I find a great author I need her backlist! LOL
Lorie, I liked some of your challenges last year .... though some were hard for my head ... I liked your hero and heroine ones, those were fun ..... and I appreciated that you were co-ordinating the mini-challenges to match the month's theme in the book store
could we have a "cowboy/rancher/country" theme? .... I have a ton of country/cowboy books and a little umph in that direction would be nice
...
one of the mini-challenges from 2006 that I think all most every Challenger enjoyed was Pet's "one word leads to another" ..... we did this one in August and it really brought up the reading totals that month ..... basically, that one word or name in the title or author matches ..... so "The Visiting Surgeon by Lucy Clark" leads to "The Sheikh's Reward by Lucy Gordon" leads to "Sheikh's Honor by Alexandra Sellers" ..... that was alot of fun .... I think I read 27 books that month because I had lined up my reading order! .... though I suppose it would be hard to follow on the main book challenge page .... but we could make sure the link from book to book is written up in our review

Hey ladies.
Star ~ Yes, I enjoyed that one as well, for the very same reasons.
Katherine ~ I’m always game for cowboys. LOL. We did the one word leads to another game last year, I think… I seem to recall discussing the ins and outs of it. Yes, we could make it work still.
Add some SPICE to your life.
yay, cowboys! :)
Lorie, maybe it was you that gave us that Challenge? .... when did you take over from Pet? .... I remember is was sometime in 2006 ..... so it could have been your mini-challenge ..... we didn't do that one last year

One Name Lead to another
hmmm Katherine you may be right about one name leads to another being in 2006. I don't remember it last year.
Do ranchers constuet as Cowboys too?

Christa ......
Yep, ranchers are like cowboys in my book :) ..... they're an "earthy" bunch
Deb, the one-word/name-leads-to-another was a great way to line up books that have been languishing in the TBR .... I love it when I have a few books lined up to read one after the other .... saves on alot of decision making between books on which one to read next! ... esp. if you have a large TBR like I do! LOL

Hi
Katherine ~ I took over the Challenge in July 2006. The “One thing leads to another” mini challenge was one of mine. I remember explaining how it works; we’d decided to go with either titles or author names, as long as one word or name led to the next book.
I may re-use that one this spring. I have Feb’s planned, and I may do Rita’s in March, I haven’t decided yet.
Christa ~ Yes Ranchers qualify as cowboys.

mini-challenges
Lorie, yes the same Merri. And the Deborah a certain Deborah we all know and love too.
I just love the topics that Lorie came up with that had a creative edge to inspire blogging. The Secrets one worked well for all genres from suspense to romance. I would like topics that have some room to have that creativity.... last year the mini-challenge topics all had that and they just guided my reading but also made my reading so much fun. I guess that is vague but I enjoy that more than topics I have seen in other reading groups leave me a bit uninspired (alphabet soup, reading authors by letters). I guess an alphabet could be fun and unexpected but somehow the kind oftopics we had last year had that creative space good for breaking out of reading slumps.

Oh!!! .....
We're going to have a Rita Challenge?? ........ so cool! .... now hmmmmm, when does the nominee list come out?? .... need time to collect the books :D ..... so cool :D
I was just thinking .... maybe you want to combine the Rita's with the other awards, like the Cataromance ones ........ that would be tremendously awesome :) ..... and the RT's list is already out for their nominees

One leads to another sounds interesting. I look forward to that one. Seems an interesting way to pick books.

I'll probably start the year off with that one, get everyone back into the groove and begin with something easier for our newcomers.

A thought
Hi there.
OK. I know this kind of strange: a challenge idea from someone who didn't actually participate in any of the challenges last year.
I'm actually the opposite of Merri. I don't like having "different things to think about" when I'm reading. For me, it's enough that I have to think about how I'm going to blog the book.
What I think might be interesting though would be a challenge to read as many lines or genres as possible in a month. We all tend to get stuck in a rut sometimes when it comes to our reading choices and a challenge like that might just give us a push to expand our boundaries.
Just a thought.
thinking
I don't like to do much thinking as I'm reading the book either. I like being able to go to the TBR shelf and say "I should read one of those 20 books because theyare RITA nominees" instead of using up reading time trying to decide which book to read next.

Out of the rut
Karen ~ I have promised myself that I will start reading other lines. Last night I even bought a Desire book! Now for me that is way out of the rut!!!! I kept thinking as I pushed my cart through Wal-Mart, "Please don't let me run into a friend from church or a student....Please!"

I hope you enjoy it after going through all that.

Lorie, I know it will be in the email with the coupon code ... however, I was hoping you could post what the February mini-challenge is ..... I need a boost to get reading and sure could use some inspiration
thanks!

Feb Mini Challenge
Hi Katherine.
Feb's mini challenge is One Thing Leads to Another, and yes, the code will be going out today at some point.
Add some SPICE to your life.
oh cool!
so it will be a minimun of one word / name of the book with the exception of "the, of, a, and" etc ? ... I hope this pulls me out of my slump!
~~ KatherineT ~~ I'm a Harlequin Addict, and I'm proud of it!
~~ Quiet Canadians ~ 2008 Book Challenge Blog
Yes, minimum of one word,
Yes, minimum of one word, and you know, I'll even accept "the", "of", "And", and "A" if there y'all have no other choice. I know that there have been times something has screamed at me to read it and I had no other options to carry to the next.
Add some SPICE to your life.
would it be ok...
Lorie,
Would it be ok to take the topic and do something more loose with it by looking inside of the book rather than using the cover? I have been noticing the weirdest thing about a detail in one book leading to another book. I'd like to use that with your topic and be a little creative and have fun with the topic.

Question on February's Challenge .......
I think this is allowed, but I thought I'd double check ... and if it is, maybe others can use this to help with their lists
If the name sounds the same but is spelt differently, is it allowed? ex Janet Dailey, Margaret Daley, Barbara Daly .... or is part of? ex. Anne McAllister, Ann Evans, Anna Adams

Sorry Katherine, I could
Sorry Katherine, I could have sworn I answered this. I guess I must not have hit post.
I'll go with a yes on the first names, like Ann, etc, that the ending is slightly different as long as it's the same base word.
I'm iffy on the last names, since they vary so much. I will say yes, if there's only a letter or two difference, such as there is with Daly, Daley and Dailey but I have to draw the line there..

Lorie- since we put a whole bunch of Spice Briefs together do they all have to lead to one another or only one. Eg The Perfect Stranger by Terry McLaughlin, Soul Stranger by Eden Bradley, Getting rid of Bradley by Jennifer Cruisie

Thanks Lorie and Katherine
Thanks Lorie and Katherine T - I thought I'd have to change Daley to Dailey but then I pulled out all my really really old TBR piles and found a 1977 book by Margaret James. It's not a Harlequin, but since all the ones I've read so far have been, I think I'm safe. And since it's Margaret James, I can follow that with Arlene James and get back on track with the right imprint.
This is actually kinda cool - I'd wanted to read this particular regency line for a long time but it didn't seem to 'fit' today's reading material if you know what I mean.
So, thanks for this challenge. I actually am cleaning out the old stuff.
