The Fourth of July/Canada Day
by Jayne-eHarlequin on June 26th, 2008, 1:21pm
Hey everyone, leave us a note to tell us how you're celebrating the Fourth of July and Canada Day this year. I thought it might be fun for us all to see the many ways that you party on and honor your country's birthdays. Me? I'm heading up to the woods with the dog and the kids and a tent to commune with nature and watch the bears chase the German tourists

Our 4th of July is spent
having at least one or two family picnics where we try to catch up on everyone's busy lives, and just enjoy being able to be thankful for our freedom. We will also be celebrating our dd#3 and dsil's 3rd anniversary which is the 1st so the cake will denote that plus our country's celebration. At nite we will go watch the fireworks display over Lake Erie.
Hope everyone enjoys their Fourth of July and Canada Day

Well..
My dh planned a nice weekend for us. Out for breakfast and movies on Sat, then yesterday he took me to Parkwood estates in Oshawa for the tour as well as High Tea, then our for a nice dinner.
On Canada Day, I'll be going over to my sisters to do a photoshoot for her. Then home to spend some time with my dh.

The 4th of July....
My DH and I have decided we'll have a small family cook-out (pretty typical around here) during the early day. In the evening our small town has a colossal fireworks show - an event that draws lots of attention from surrounding areas as well. We can sit right on our front porch and have an awesome view. In years past, DD has some sparklers so she feels like a 'participant'. This year however, she'll be going home with her grandma overnight. They can also see the fireworks from there. This gives hubby and me some time to ourselves. A nice evening for fireworks.
I hope everyone else has a GREAT 4th of July and/or Canada Day!

we're farming ....
so long weekends usually don't mean much except the bank and post office are closed! LOL ..... that's one of the reasons why I love our new Feb. long weekend in Ontario ... that's a long weekend I can really take advantage of, and as it falls very close to my b/d it's even better!
.... one year we made the mistake of going to Ontario Place for the fireworks ... I didn't know a person could feel claustrophobic when they were outside ..... I nearly had a panic attack .... never again! .... though I've always wanted to see the fireworks from on the lake in a boat or maybe across at the island ... that would be grand
I'm looking forward to some of the ribfest weekends that will be coming up in July and August .... those are fun and yummy too!

Hey Jayne, happy holidays.
Hey Jayne, happy holidays. :)
I've promised dh kayaking in the morning on the fourth, and then we'll head out to a birthday party for my BIL, who was born on the day, so we have two reasons to celebrate. :) BBQ, fireworks, and the usual. It will be fun, but maybe not quite as much as watching bears chase tourists... *G*

Hi Jayne, have a nice Canada Day weekend!
We're celebrating the 4th with a cookout early in the day with a group of friends that also have small kids. After that, we'll head home for a dvd moviefest and will check out the fireworks on TV this year.
Ahhh, the exciting lives of young parents! Wouldn't have it any other way.

Got to do a parade
with our 2 cub scouts. The walk both ways with the float won't hurt and then I can eat more barbeque!

Angel....
A Cub Scout float? How cute! Is there a theme for it or are the boys riding on it in their uniforms? Our Brownies might do something for our Fall festival here in October - maybe by combining them with something enviromental as the theme for the float. Not sure exactly. Parades can be so fun! I used to go ga-ga for them as a kid!
Anyway, you and your DH (and boys) have a great 4th! Enjoy your BBQ!
Fake Frenchie, enjoy your BBQ, too! Or is that already over for you? I'm losing track of the difference in our holidays.
Sam, kayaking sounds pretty fun! I've never done it before but I'd love to try. DH and I like to a lot of outdoor activities.
Celtic Lass, yep the lives of parent of young children can be pretty interesting to say the least! Actually your plans sound very family oriented, and that's great.

Our holiday is officially
Our holiday is officially the 14th of July. Bastille Day. But we are celebrating the 5th of July because our 1st anniversary is the 4th and also the 4th of July is an American holiday and I am Franco-American.

Ooh, I'm confused, Fake Frenchie!
Not really, but that's a lot of dates to scrunch together. Bastille Day? I think I've heard of this. Anyway, it's pretty cool that you celebrate both holidays (rolled into one). And I'm kind of getting the message here that BBQ is universal!
Have fun!

The only theme is a big flag, etc. The boys did dress up for the Christmas float and my 8yr old was okay with it but my 10 yr old was not. (I guess Tommy is actually considered a Webelo not a cub scout.)
Everyone have an awesome 4th or 5th.

I did absolutely nothing
I did absolutely nothing for Canada Day! My husband fell asleep and we didn't even watch the fireworks. lol.
My allergies are horrible this year, otherwise I would have gone to Canada Day Jam with some friends.

Canada Day
The day before we had friends over for dinner and drinks, and a neighbour had great fireworks we watched from the deck.
On Canada Day itself, we worked. Hard. We're still getting settled, so we cleaned dust off of walls left from refinishing the hardwood. The dh put up blinds in the whole downstairs- previous owners had NONE. I got down on the hardwood and touched up ALL the baseboards and woodwork. By midafternoon we were knackered so we went for a dip in the pool and then had a nice bbq. Sounds more festive...except after dinner we started moving furniture into those rooms! LOL.
When dh commented on it though, I mentioned that it was in fact a celebration, that we live in a country where we can have this beautiful place and even be able to renovate and enjoy our outdoors. Yep - I was really appreciating freedom.

Canada Day was July 1st for
Canada Day was July 1st for us. Happy July 4th to everyone celebrating 4th of July. For Canada Day we drove out to Sooke which is just outside Victoria and had the best chocolate milkshake and cheeseburger you can imagine (absolutely no calories) at Mom's place. It's one of those places that's NOT a chain and just has really, really good food.
PS: For years I avoided the place like the plague. My mother was not a cook and the thought of intentionally seeking out an eatery called Mom's just seemed wrong. Fortunately other people didn't feel the same way and I've realized the error of my ways.
Thanksgiving/Columbus Day
Funny when holidays collide.
In October, I was in Vancouver Canada....I left there on Canadian Thanksgiving, and arrived in Los Angeles to American Columbus day. Felt like some kind of time warp.
But since I kinda loose tract of time while on vacation, I didnt know it was Columbus Day. I walk to the post office to pick up my mail, and its closed. I was soooo confused.
And the sorry thing is, that I told my roommate that I was going to the Post Office. She says "ok". she had no excuse. She hadnt been out of the country. And she for got it was a holiday.
