Complaints
Wayne, Who do I need to write to complain about the length of the stories that are written with the publishing house? I love reading books by Melanie Schuster and have been waiting a long time for her to continue her series surrounding the Deveraux family, only to be disappointed because the story felt rushed. Having read all the other stories concerning this family prior to now, to learn that only reason this was cut short was because of the publishing house makes me angry. This is not the first Kimani story that I have read that I've felt has been rushed, thereby making the story seem too unreal to be believeable. What's a person got to do to get a decent AA book written?
Trust in Me
I read Melanie Schuster new book Trust in Me and it did not feel at all rushed. I think it stood up well in comparison to her other books in that series. The only books that I have felt the rush to complete are sometimes when our black authors do the intrigue or silhouette desire lines. Come on nothing really compares to the old Bet books or arabesque lines.
I've read TRUST IN ME,
I've read TRUST IN ME, and I, too, didn't think it felt rused.
And I can't agree that the length of a book has anything to do with with a book feeling rushed. I've read books of less that 200 pages that were well-paced and left me satisfied at the end; and I've also read books of 300 pages that felt rushed and left me wanting more. It's all about the author's ability to pace her/his plot within the required word limit.
And while I feel nostalgic about the old BET Books, and some of the books on my keepshelf are from that era, I have quite a few books from the Kimani line which I find equal to the Arabesque books and are also sitting on my keepershelf. And not all the Arabesque books were excellent...

Complaint-follow-up
I really did not get my question answered and that's my fault for not explaining it better. It's ok though, especially if you don't know where I can go to get my answer from. My complaint was directed toward that book but should have been more about the style of the Kimmi books.
My guess is that Harlequin created Kimmi to act as an AA verison of it's Silhouette Desire brand, since those books are a little more spicer then the standard Harlequins and to provide a platform for AA type of stories. My problem is that most seem rushed, and maybe that's the point that they are meant to be quick reads, that only hit the highlights without providing alot of depth and background. To me, they just don't lead themselves to series based stories. I guess the best way for me to explain this is to use a television analogy, Kimmi's remind me of sitcom, not a made for tv movie or drama. They are good for the 30 min. show or maybe even the hour long show, but not meant for the 3 day movie series. In my opinion, that's ok for new author's breaking in to writing, but for me when you have an established format, the fans of that author, come to expect and frankly demand, the same intense writing, especially when it is part of a sucessful series.
I'll agree, I have read books that could have easily shaved a good 100 pages off the book and it would have been a good read, and I have read books that need another 100 pages to make the story beleiveable, it does have alot to do with the author's story telling ablity. I guess I am just hoping for something closer to what I was used to getting in the BET platform in a Kimmi press, and maybe since I don't know all the ins and outs of publishing, that's why I'm constistantly disappointed when I read a Kimmi book. I am a very avid reader, by the time this year ends I will have read atleast 100 books, all of different sizes and from a variety of publishing house and authors. I will admit to liking the made for tv movie verison better than the sitcom, but just like most people, I needed the sitcom to break up the mood and to reach my 100 book plateau due to my busy lifestyle. Bottomline, I guess I'm trying to figure out why it has to be an either or, why can't I have stories written in the same platform as the old BET? Why doesn't Kimmi press have a platform like the old BET platform? If you can do a Harlequin Superromance, why can't you have a Kimmi Superromance? I know you may not know the answer to these questions, so I wrote this long comment to say, Do you know where I can go to ask these questions. Who does one write to, call, email, phone to get answers as to why?
ryemeKimani does have a
ryeme
Kimani does have a platform for the longer books. The Arabesque lines still exists and still feature the bestselling authors. I'm not sure I'll call Kimani Romance, the Desire of Kimani since the Kimani Romances are the same length of the Harlequin Superromance (250 pages). Desire are (180 pages); Kimani Arabesque are 300 pages. And if I look at the 2009 line up, we'll have some great reads from Celester Norfleet, Adrianne Byrd, Rochelle Alers (trilogy),
However, I understand what you mean. You want longer books.
And based on the comments we get here on eharlequin.com and the online bookstores and review sites, I still think we write pretty 'decent' books.
I'll be sure to forward your comments.

Books with great content
I just read this wonderful book by Ms. Sims, Seduced by Moonlight. It has a wonderful flow to it. The hero and heroine are well developed and build their relationship. There is no rush to the bedroom but there is heat and chemistry. The secondary characters are also well developed and offer believability to the blot. This book was offered in the Arabesque line. However, I do not believe it is so much the line that Ms. Sims is writing for; it is the fact that she is a talented author.
Trust In Me
Wayne, This is one of those times when we are going to have to agree to disagree. I don't know how long ago it's been since you've read this series, but I suggest you read it again, then maybe you will understand what I'm talking about. If not, again, we will just have to agree to disagree.
TRUST IN ME
I have TRUST IN ME on my pile to read during the holidays, so for now I can only base my opinion on the reviews I've read on Amazon.com, here and RT Magazine....and the majority loved the book.
But I promise to give it a read and yes, I've read all the books in the series.
And yes, we can't always agree... that's one of the wonderful things I like about books; the varying responses.

Trust In Me-follow-up
I have recently read the writing guielines Harlequin has for the Arabesque Romance line. Having read that, I'm more convinced then ever that this book should have been written in that format. If it had, it would have fit more in line with the others in the Cochren/Deveraux series and would have provide the much need romanctical feel that the others have and the fans have come to expect. Here is what I was given as the guidelines, when you do read the story, then the guideline for this line, you tell me which one would have been the better fit. Maybe then you'll understand why I was somewhat disappointed in the story.
Genre: single-title romance
Manuscript word length: Approximately 85,000 – 95,000 words
Manuscript pages: 300 – 350
Arabesque Romances offer contemporary, sophisticated and entertaining love stories featuring realistic African-American characters that resolve natural relationship conflicts such as issues of trust, compatibility and outlook on life, with satisfying endings.
Arabesque Romances may reflect several points of view and can include a wide variety of story subgenres including classic romance, contemporary romance, romantic comedy and romantic suspense or romantic thriller.
Arabesque single title romances should adhere to the following guidelines:
And just to be fair here is what I learn the writing guideline for the Kimmi Romances:
Genre: series romance
Manuscript word length: Approximately 75,000 words
Manuscript pages: 200 – 300
Kimni Romance offers sexy, dramatic, sophisticated and entertaining love stories featuring realistic African-American characters that work through compelling emotional conflicts on their way to committed and satisfying relationships.
Told primarily from the heroine's point of view, Kimani Romances will keep it real with true-to-life African-American characters that turn up the heat and sizzle with passion.
Providing a wide variety of editorial, the Kimani Romance series will include:
Kimani Romances can be written in first, third or multiple points of view; and all story settings will be considered.
Kimani Manuscript Submissions
Hi Wade:
I noticed that Kimani is no longer accepting submissions from unpublished authors (or even published authors who don't already have a strong fan base). What happened? I was in the middle of writing a manuscript to submit.
Thanks, Jeanette Valentine
Jeanette Based on the
Jeanette
Based on the guidelines and what I know, Kimani is still accepting manuscripts from unpublished authors. The reality is that no publisher can afford not to. However, there has not been a new author for quite a while, but that doesn't mean you can't be the next one.
Here's what the guidelines say:
How to Submit
If you're ready to share your vision of contemporary African-American romance, send a cover letter that briefly explains the nature of the story and any previously published work, a detailed synopsis covering the plot points and three sample chapters (published authors) or a detailed synopsis and a complete manuscript (unpublished authors) to:

I don`t see alot of kimani oline reads
MzLoVe2rEad
Kimani Online Reads
With more that 10 Harlequin lines, it's be difficult to see more than one or two Kimani reads per year...and it's like that with some of the other lines which have smaller audiences.
Along with that, writing a online reads is also demanding when we, the writers, also have to fulfil our contracts for our regular books.
Harlequin also needs to know that there is an audience (consistent) for the online read. The lack of consistant activity on the Kimani boards doesn't help either. I've been trying for two years to get our readers in, with varied and I'll thank the faithful few here.
Compared to the other boards I host, the AA authors do not appear to have the support of their readership. However, I know better than that since I'm a member of authors' loops where membership is large and activity is vibrant. So I know we can do much better here to support all of the Kimani authors.
Each week, I write a report on the activities and information on requests from members. Maybe, if my report mentioned that more Kimani stories have been requested, it would allow for consideration.
Hope my response helps...
And yeah, you can invite your friends here.

IM GUILTY
HI, WAYNE
I loved the online read with Ann Christopher and have since order both of her books. By the way both book were 5 * I am glad I came on and read the story so thank you for that. I think for me I belong to so many groups, Brenda, Melanie, Adrianne, Niobia,Altonya and Beverly Jenkins. I just forget about coming on. Maybe you should do a poll or something to see WHY people are not posting. Ok so I will book mark this page and post more often.
Now I have a question and I am not sure if your the person who can answer but I figure you must know somebody who does. I order from Halequin sometimes on Friday's you get a free book, so here is my issue. If all my orders are A.A why is the free book NOT A.A or even by a A.A author? Also when other people order books on fridays do they get the free book that is A.A. just wondering.
Kimmi
My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return.

Kimmi Yes, the free book
Kimmi
Yes, the free book on Friday has been AA books on several occasions. While, there is some seperation in term of lines and series, we have been encouraging diversity here, so the online stories, the discounted books, the free Celebration books stretch across the imprints and lines.
I've discovered some really great authors this way and I'm sure when the AA books are the free book, other readers are introduced to a story or author they may not have tried before. We're all one big family here.

I promise there is a new book coming. I'm actually working on the first book of my new contract. Daniel Buchanan's story (Book # 3 in my Buchanan Brothers' series).
Soon, sorry, it's won't be out until, hopefully, early 2011. I did now writing in 2008 and missed the 2010 schedule. However, I will have an novella out in 2010.

Hi Wayne,
I'm guilty of lurking and decided to delurk and say hello. I generally post in SSE authors blog or sub-care, although not very frequently in sub-care either. I love the Kimani books and purchase them regularly. I really enjoyed Ann Christopher's on-line read and did post there just about everyday.
Deedar, you wanted to know about free book Friday and on-line reads. On the SHOP page, you will see a link for Free book Friday. If you purchase any two books on Friday, you will automatically receive a free book. The link generally shows the free books for the entire month.
On the READ page, you will see a link for the on-line reads library. You can find books in just about every line. Also, you will see some active on-line reads that are being added to either every weekday, every week, or twice a week.
I hope everyone has a great day.

Wayne, I have a question! Where should I go to let everyone know
Where should I go to let everyone know that the new podcast is up and it's Meet the Editors Episode #14: Kelli Martin and Alex Colon discuss "the wide range of editorial they are acquiring for Kimani Press." I've listened to a few minutes here and already am very interested, even though I don't have people living in my head and therefore am not a writer LOL. I am always curious about things, though.
Those of you who would prefer to listen via iTunes, I'm checking there next to make sure it's there. If it's not, rest assured, I'll let TPTB know.

This is my first time posting a comment. I have been a fan of the Kimani books since the line was published in 2006. After reading some of the comments I will continue to post and encourage others to read the online stories.

Hey Wayne,
A quick question. I noticed that the authors of a few of the lines have gotten together to blog. SSE has had one for several months and Desire has just started one. I know that in February a lot of Kimani authors blogged here. Do you think they would be interested in having regular blogs? I participate regularly on the SSE blog and would participate here.
Thanks. Have a great day!
