In the Rose Garden with Gail Dayton

Not far from the Enchanted Scribe and the Silver Unicorn, stands an arbor made of scrolled copper, tarnished to a lovely shade of greenish-blue, with a gate below its pointed arch. Roses climb up either side, single, deep red blooms with white centers virtually cover the long, brambly branches. Step through the gate, and you’re in another place for this rose garden is tucked into a pocket of existence that is outside normal time and space.

Paths lead you into a series of garden “rooms”, some of them paved with grass, others with flagstones and small-leaved herbs that send up a sweet scent when you crush them underfoot. Yet others are leaf-covered alleys leading randomly through the profusion of flowers. Old-fashioned roses—bushy, thorny shrubs laden with blossoms in every color and style from single, nearly-wild flowers to fat, cabbage-rose blooms—grow interspersed with iris and lilies, daisies and clematis vines.

Benches shaded by more rose-covered arbors provide ample seating. Fountains chuckle, spraying their water over lotus flowers and patterned lily pads while enormous calico fish hope for handouts in the water below. Statues of Greek gods...and various other subjects...stand among the flowers. At the end of the garden, you find a large gazebo, furnished with benches and heaped with floor cushions for lounging. A table & chairs provide a spot for picnicking, furnished with never-empty beverage pitchers donated by Erin.

The garden is infinitely expandable, being in a “no space” as it is. Anyone may create their own garden room for relaxation, reading or inspiration. Come on in and smell the roses.
