3 Men and a Body with Stephanie Bond

You thought your job was dead end? Go behind the scenes of the sexy Body Movers series with author Stephanie Bond! 2 Bodies for the Price of 1 Body Movers

Hello! This is the month I've been waiting for for a year--the month of the release of the new Body Movers book, 3 Men and a Body! Book three was so fun for me to write! In this book, Carlotta joins Cooper on a roadtrip to Florida for a VIP body pickup--except someone wants to make sure they don't make it back to Atlanta with their cargo intact! If you're a Coop fan, this book is for you! - Stephanie

Three Men and a Body

Carlotta Wren has always dreamed of taking a vacation from her life as daughter to fugitive parents and mother to her younger brother, Wesley. So when she is temporarily suspended from her job at Neiman Marcus, the invitation from hunky body mover Cooper Craft to ride to Florida for some fun in the sun and a VIP body pickup seems like a good idea....

Hello readers!

Hi, everyone!  Thanks for joining me this week to talk about the Body Movers series and the upcoming installment 3 MEN AND A BODY!

A little background on the series:  In the Body Movers books, an Atlanta woman works for Neiman Marcus by day, and helps her brother move bodies from crime scenes by night!

I got the idea for Body Movers YEARS ago--basically, a woman who is a girly-girl during the day moves bodies at night.  But I couldn't figure out WHY a girly-girl would do something so...icky.  I discarded the idea of her doing it to help a boyfriend--that's kind of pathetic.  BUT she might do it to help her brother!  Especially if she'd raised her brother and was eager for him to get a job and succeed at it!

I had my body-moving duo.  Meet Carlotta Wren, who's hedging 30. Carlotta and her younger brother were raised with silver spoons in their mouths...until her senior year in high school when her father was accused of a white collar crime and skipped town to escape the trial, with her socialate mother in tow.  Carlotta was left to raise her 10-year-old brother Wesley when she was barely equipped to raise herself.  College was no longer an option.  She gave up her 20s being a mother to Wesley.  They've had a handful of postcards from their fugitive parents, but they have no idea where they are.  Carlotta has been working at Neiman's for all that time and they've managed to scrape by.  Meanwhile, Wesley, now 19, a lovable techie unemployed genius, developed a penchant for poker, and has gotten into debt to 2 loan sharks.  After he's arrested for computer hacking, Carlotta gives hime an ulitmatum--get a job or get out.  She didn't know he was going to get a job moving bodies for the morgue.  And she didn't know she was going to be pulled into the world of body-moving herself and the cases surrounding the bodies!

Body Movers is a humorous sexy mystery series, chock full of romance.  Carlotta has 3 love interests:  her former fiance Peter who dumped her when her family scandal erupted, but is now back in her life; a hunky detective named Jack who arrested her brother and reopened her father's case; and her brother's sexy body-moving boss Cooper, a former M.E. who lost his job as Coroner due to drinking.

The books so far:

Book 1:  Body Movers (available now)
Book 2:  2 Bodies for the Price of 1 (available now)
Book 3:  3 Men and a Body (available Tues, July 29)

Any questions or comments?  Lay 'em on me!  We have all week to chat!

Three love interests?

Writer2B--yes, Carlotta has 3 love interests!

Peter is rich and successful, from a wealthy family; they have history--Peter was Carlotta's first love.  Peter is back trying to made amends, but can she ever forgive him for abandoning her when she needed him most?

Jack is a hunky detective; the sexual chemistry between Carlotta and Jack is electric!  But he's also the man keeping tabs on her delinquent brother and who's after her fugitive father.

Cooper is a surprisingly sexy body-mover, a deep-thinker who has a way with Carlotta's brother and challenges Carlotta to do more with her life.  Coop makes no secret about how he feels toward Carlotta, but can she ever live up to his expectations?

With 3 great guys vying for her attention, what's a girl to do?  Eenie, meenie, minie, mo...

Go Coop!

From the first book, I've been rooting for Cooper.  A road trip is just the thing for my favorite ex-ME to make his case.  Nerds Rule!

  Emotions

vote for coop!

SuzanH--reader feedback to-date as far as who Carlotta should choose is running 50/50 between Jack and Coop, with poor Peter being left out in the cold!

But fyi, Peter does find a way to redeem himself...and first loves are hard to forget.  And since Peter works for the same firm where Carlotta's father was accused of embezzling, he's in the best position to help her find out what happened.  Plus it soothes Carlotta's wounded soul and the humiliation she suffered to know that Peter came back--all she has to do is say yes and she'll have the life she always wanted!  And after all that Carlotta's been through, doesn't she deserve some luxury in her life?

Decisions, decisions!

vote for coop--addendum

But yes, if you like Coop, you'll probably like 3 MEN AND A BODY!  It gives the reader and Carlotta more insight into the quiet, intelligent man.  Coop is definitely the nerdy underdog in this love quadrangle!

Vote for the sexy cop!

Coop is cool, Peter is in third for me. I love the sexy, rough cop, he totally has my vote. As for Carlotta i'd love to go shopping in her closet, for the  purses alone. The girl can shop, and obviously does it very well.

I loved the first in the series, i'm behind on my books and haven't gotten to two just yet. But i will soon, and then the third. Great books.

Writing question. Do you find it easier to write the short blaze series, versus the body movers series that you have going now? Do you think a new writer should start with the shorter series to get their teeth wet, so-to-speak, or should they run with single title if they have a good enough idea??? Undecided

Vote for the sexy cop

I love Jack, too!  He's easy to write...but that might be because he's the least complicated of the men!

JODY asked:  Do you find it easier to write the short blaze series, versus the body movers series that you have going now? Do you think a new writer should start with the shorter series to get their teeth wet, so-to-speak, or should they run with single title if they have a good enough idea???

In terms of page length, the romantic comedy manuscripts I write for Blaze are certainly shorter than my Body Movers manuscripts (60,000 words vs. 100,000), but for each Blaze novel I have to craft an original story with all new characters, and that takes a lot of time.  When I write a new Body Movers manuscript, the reader and I are already familiar with the characters, so I can jump right into the story.  On the other hand, I have a lot of loose threads going in Body Movers that I have to keep up with, and a more complicated plot.  But  I enjoy writing both types of books--one type is a break from the other!  (Look for the Sex for Beginners Blaze trilogy WATCH AND LEARN, IN A BIND, and NO PEEKING... to be released Oct, Nov, and Dec 2008.)

As far as where a new writer should start, I'm a big proponent of writing category romance to learn the ropes and to build not only your resume and your bank account, but also your readership.  I started in category romance to get my career rolling and to learn how to meet deadlines, etc, and worked on my single title ideas on the side.  I've published over 11 single title humorous romantic suspense novels for three publishing houses, but I've written category romance throughout.  I love the shorter format of category romance and what it provides me in terms of exposure and shelf presence.  And I like being able to offer my readers something at a lower price point.  In short, I think it's a good career strategy to do BOTH.

If you're attending the RWA conference in SF, I'm giving a workshop titled "How to Make a Living Writing Romance Novels" during which I'll be discussing how writing category romance can figure into your short- and long-term career plan.

Thanks for your question, Jody--I hope this helps!

So great to have you here!

Stephanie, I love this series, so I'm really excited for installment #3. Guess I'd better go brush up on the first two!

Hi from Dream

Hi, Dream!  BODY MOVERS was released Aug 2006, then 2 BODIES FOR THE PRICE OF 1 was released Aug 2007, and now 3 MEN AND A BODY will be released Aug 2008 (actually, Tuesday, July 29).  But readers have been complaining about the one year spacing between books, so Mira has agreed to publish books 4, 5, and 6 in the series next year back to back in April, May, and June 2009.  That's a lot o' body moving!  But I'd like to say a big thank you to readers who take the time to send feedback--it's so helpful to know what readers want.  We're really just here to please!

quick question

I do love carlotta's story in the body movers, but wanted to ask about another series. Are you planning to write any more from MOJO??

Such a cool, and creepy little town, i'd love to see more!

quick question

Jody's referring to my voodoo series, IN DEEP VOODOO and the sequel FINDING YOUR MOJO that I wrote for another publisher.  I do have 2 more books outlined for that series (one for Sheena, and one for Marie), but at the moment, the series is in limbo because I changed publishers.  But I haven't given up on it and hope to revisit the series in some format in the future to tie up all the loose ends--readers still don't know, for example, who in the creepy little town of Mojo, Louisiana was making the voodoo dolls that mysteriously appeared before some horrible death befell that person!  I'd really like to go back and give readers the answers they deserve.

Please keep checking my website for updates on the voodoo series--and thanks so much for asking!

arrrrgh!

just finished reading the first two books. vote: Jack is out, can't make my mind up between Coop and Jack. Love the dangerous cop thing, but have a soft spot in my heart for the quiet intellectual types who don't know how to move forward with the women they love.

I am so snagging book three the moment it is available. have found new fave author.

arrrrgh!

You just finished BOTH of the first 2 books in the series?  Wow, you must be one fast reader!  Glad you enjoy them enough to whip through them, though!  And I assume you mean that PETER is out?  And that you're rooting equally for Jack and Coop?  Yeah, I like the fact that Jack and Coop are such opposites...and the fact that they acknowledge they're both interested in Carlotta, and that they have to work together and respect each other in their professional roles.  And Peter is the spoiler--he's the one that Jack and Coop can team up and dislike because he's the one who has the advantage since he has history with Carlotta.  It's a fun dynamic to work with!

Great News!

I'm so excited to hear that a.) there's three more books coming, and b.) they're coming out together!

What's in store for Carlotta?

What's in store for Carlotta in books 4-6

Body Movers books 4-6 will be released back to back in 2009 in a "trilogy"--still Body Movers with all the familiar characters but in book 4, a serial killer unleashes his wrath on Atlanta.  Carlotta's life is turned upside down as friends and family are involved, pursued, and implicated through books 4, 5, and 6.  Look for some new characters and new experiences and danger for Carlotta as she continues to wrestle with her heart over the roles of the men in her life--Peter, Cooper, Jack, Wesley, and her father!

oops

i did mean Peter out. I think i must've had Jack on the brain still.

i guess i am a fast reader, especially when i'm caught up in a book i don't want to put down. confession: read til wee hours of morning because i didn't want to wait to finish the next day (as in after sleeping).

i am so happy the publishers decided to release the books in 2009 one after the other. the wait would be agonizing otherwise.

back to back to back releases

The only thing bad about having books out back to back to back is having to WRITE them back to back to back!  It can make for a manic work period. I go for DAYS without leaving my condo where I live in Atlanta.  I've actually had neighbors call me and say "There are packages sitting in front of your door."  Smile

I can't wait for book 3!

I love this series and so excited to hear that coop is featured in this book.  He's definetely my pick.  Thanks for the great characters!

Campaign buttons--what do you think?

A reader suggested that I should have campaign buttons printed up for "I vote for Coop" and "I vote for Peter" and "I vote for Jack."  What do you think?

Check out my BODY MOVERS sexy mystery series!

Love the idea!

I just don't know which button I'd wear. :)

Too funny about the neighbors calling about your packages. We definitely appreciate your sacrifice. :)

Holed up working

Hope I didn't come across as complaining about a manic schedule--this is the best job in the world!  But I do feel a certain amount of pressure to maintain (and increase!) the the level of storytelling and character development as the series progresses.  And because it's a series with "bigger" storylines moving from book to book, I'm always trying to think a couple of books ahead.  Entertaining readers is a big responsibility--and a privilege!

Thanks for such a great week!

We've enjoyed having you as always.

And no, didn't sound like you were complaining at all. I've always respected and admired your work ethic. I think that's what I love about your writing. You're so committed to making it the best possible.

Just one more thing!

Thanks for everyone who participated and/or eavesdropped on our conversation this week about 3 MEN AND A BODY and the BODY MOVER series!

And if you haven't already, please join me in the 100,000 Book Challenge that Harlequin is sponsoring.  Unfortunately, about 30 of the books I read this year were for contests, which have to remain anonymous, so I couldn't enter and count them toward the challenge!  But as soon as I finish my deadlines in September, I'll be tackling my to-be-read stack of Harlequin and Mira novels and doing all I can to help meet the 100,000 book challenge by December 31, 2008.  At the end of the challenge, Harlequin will make an unprecedented donation equivalent to the value of 100,000 books ($700,000) to the National Center for Family Literacy.  If you haven't signed up, please do, and get your reader friends involved, too.  You can help make something wonderful happen for something you already do--read!  To join, see the Book Challenge section under the community boards.

Have a great reading summer, everyone!

The challenge behind the challenge

Stephanie, I'm in the same dilemma... I read a number of books for contests, and I haven't counted them for the same reason!
