Online Read Discussion: Wishful Thinking by Mindy Klasky
About the story: Aspiring actress Kelly Reilly’s world is sent into a tailspin when her longtime boyfriend and fellow thespian Rob Cornell gets the opportunity of a lifetime—an opportunity that doesn’t include her. Kelly’s sympathetic father doesn’t have any sage advice to offer, just a tarnished old…lamp? To Kelly’s surprise, she’s soon got a genie at her beck and call—a gender-bending, wise-cracking, and very real genie! The perfect solution to her problem, right?
But with each wish Kelly makes, the situation gets more and more complicated, and she quickly realizes that even a charmed life has its imperfections….

Mindy Klasky learned to read when her parents shoved a book in her hands and told her that she could travel anywhere in the world through stories. She never forgot that advice.
Mindy's travels have taken her through multiple careers. After graduating from Princeton University, she considered becoming a professional stage manager or a rabbi. Ultimately, though, she settled on being a lawyer, working as a litigator at a large Washington firm. When she realized that lawyering kept her from writing (and dating and sleeping and otherwise living a normal life), Mindy became a librarian, and she now writes full-time.

Hmmmm.......
This sounds like an interesting read, Mindy. Interested in the premise! Glad this is a daily, so I don't have to wait long for more.

Hmmm, was that a cardboard box of kleenex? guess not as up above in the blurb it sounds like it's a genie lamp... so far this story sounds interesting, will see where it goes... don't usually like first person chick flick type books, but this chapter is drawing me in...

A big cliffhanger already!
What's in the box, and what's in store for Kelly and Rob? Sounds like a break-up is coming, but why? Did Rob get a role that's going to require he leave Kelly behind? Already I'm sucked into the story and wondering about their relationship and where it's going from here.
As others have said, I'm glad this is a daily!

Glad this one is a daily
It sounds like Rob has gotten a really big break and is trying to break up with Kelly as though she never existed in his life. Also, maybe he has found another woman to replace her. So far, I don't really like him, but hey, this is only the first chapter.
This sounds like a really interesting read with a genie lamp and all.
Count me in as another who doesn't usually like reads written in the character's outlook of things.
Mindy, you are brilliant. You left us with a cliffie in the very first chapter.
Thank You!
Thanks, everyone, who has taken time to comment on my Online Reads, Wishful Thinking. I had so much fun writing this story, and I've been waiting breathlessly to hear what you think!
I, too, am glad that it's a daily - so that you can tell me what you think, on a regular basis!
I look forward to chatting with you over the next few weeks - and I especially thank those of you who don't usually read this sort of thing!

Write What You (Don't) Know
Thanks, everyone, who's reading along - I love hearing that the story is holding your interest!
I had a lot of fun writing "Wishful Thinking"! While a lot of Kelly's character and her situation is familiar to me from various jobs I've had (including working as a stage manager), her restaurant job has no relationship to any job I've ever worked! I'm good at eating burgers (and fries - lots of fries) at joints like Mephisto Mike's, but I have never had the stamina, the physical grace, or the memory to pull off a successful waitress job. (I'd collapse in a melted puddle about one hour into the workday, having dropped three trays of food, only to replace them with dishes served up to all the wrong people at each table.)
I hope that you enjoy the next chapter!

When a genie grants wishes, what could possibly go wrong?
Aaaack!
No, no, no! I'm not supposed to be this upset at the beginning of a story! I feel a break-up coming on, and in today's chapter Rob seems more upset and awkward about how to handle it than cool and dismissive. He sounds like he cares a lot, but... (I just hate those "but..."s!) I already feel like crying for Kelly, and I feel upset for Rob, who seems to be in emotional upheaval as well. And I have no firm idea of what's happening to make either one of them upset (though, as someone else said, I'm guessing he got a part that is going to separate them somehow). Egad!
Mindy, you've done a great job of reeling me in. Normally, I have to know more about characters to really start empathizing and caring about what's happening between them. Even though we've basically only heard a tiny bit of their history and seen them barely interact, I'm feeling totally upset for them both, and I don't even know for sure if I like them yet!

Another great chapter, Mindy
You did it again. You left us with another cliffie! How in the world do you do it? You're keeping us hanging and panting for more after only 2 chapters. LOL!
Hopefully tomorrow we will find out what is going on with Rob. He does seem tortured. I could have sworn that he was going to kiss Kelly toward the end of the chapter, but he's ready to fess up and has hardened his heart.
Thanks, Mindy!

I just read the first two chapters and I can already tell this is going to be a pain waiting for the story to unfold. I don't wait well. I tend to not read an online until it is more underway because I don't want to wait. Damn!

Nice job Mindy! I feel the pain and worry of them all. I look forward to the continuance of this tale.

It was as we expected
Rob has a career in New York set up, minus Kelly. Their careers are one thing, but why didn't he communicate with her. Grrrrr... Oh, well, that probably would have ruined the whole story, and we still have 3 weeks and 2 days to read.
Mindy, you are evil. LOL!
Hmmm, figured something
Hmmm, figured something like that was going to happen. Maybe he didn't tell her because he didn't know how to tell her without hurting her. Of course he hurt her anyway and probably doubly so by not telling her
. Or it could be he didn't want to hear her opinion ad nauseum until he left. She seems like she'd be a talker. Whatever the reason, he should have still told her right after he agreed to go with Randolph. Seems like she's seeing more into the relationship than he is. Maybe they both need to go out and spread their wings. She, and thereby him since they are of the same age, seem very young. Going to go have to reread the first few chapters to see if I missed something that would clue me in to their ages.
We've got 17 more chapters to go and he's going off to NY and she's not. How is the genie going to play into this? Is there another hero? will this story have an HEA?

Ooooh! Ouch!
Well, I kind of understand why Rob was reluctant to talk to Kelly. How do you tell someone you care so much about that you made the grade, but she didn't? On the other hand, not to tell someone you love that you've accepted a role and are leaving town to pursue it until the night before you leave is definitely a mistake.
What's Kelly supposed to think? Not only is she hurt that his acting skills were acceptable while hers weren't, but now she will question their entire relationship. Rob, on the other hand, was probably just putting off an unpleasant and difficult discussion because he didn't know how she'd take it (or even because he DID know). I don't get the feeling that he's running from her, but I suspect she may get that feeling, when she gets over her feeling of betrayal that she wasn't included in a major life decision when she thought they were in love.
Oh, boy! I can see lots of heartache for both of them in the future (and for us as we suffer along with them). Wonder how the lamp will come into play, exactly. Hmmm.
I don't think I've ever read a story before where the BBM comes in the first 2 chapters! (At least I hope that's the BBM. Heaven help us if something worse is in store for the two of them down the road!) Wonder how much worse it will get before it gets better, and, hence, how much more suffering we're going to have to do while we worry about this. Jeez, Mindy, you could have eased us into this instead of just blindsiding us with an emotional 2x4!

Thanks, ladies, for following along!
JV, I think you explain Rob's motivation best - he was under a lot of pressure to give an immediate answer about the dream job of his career, which he gave, but then he had to figure out how to tell his best friend and life-long-girlfriend that he chose his career over her. Faced with the burden of that confession, he sort of ... gave up. Until the very last minute.
In a lot of my stories, I draw on my own dating disasters. I am exceedingly happy to say that this break-up disaster is *not* part of my personal past! Now, that doesn't mean that no guy ever broke my heart, in the name of career advancement.... Just not under the same circumstances.
Which is a good thing, of course, because *my* genie lamp continues to be missing!

Actually I think Rob and Kelly needed to break up, even if it's only for a little while. Seems like they never experienced anyone else or anything else. I still think he should have told her sooner, but I can totally understand his being afraid to tell Kelly. She seems rather possessive.

A Russian, 6 ft. tall, ballerina genie!
Now, why didn't I see that one coming? LOL That's certainly a twist on your standard, blue, middle Eastern genie a la Robin Williams' genie in Aladdin or Sinbad's portrayal (though he wasn't blue). It's even a twist on the I Dream of Jeanie type of genie. Interesting!
Kelly is a bit jealous of his success, but I can't blame her. She's just had a couple of hard hits to the old ego. She doesn't seem overly possessive to me, though. After all, they've been a couple for 20 years, I believe. It's pretty normal after 20 years of doing things together with no indications to the contrary to expect things to stay as they are, so I don't feel like she was unreasonable to expect to be consulted on his life-altering decisions. She's hurt that Rob seems to be willing to throw their 20 years away (or, at least, expect her to just wait for him) in favor of his career. In many ways, I'm sure she feels like the woman who's been married for 20-25 years when her husband walks in one day and blindsides her with the announcement that he wants a divorce. She's stunned and probably can't see her future without him, especially since they have been together since they were children. Clearly she anticipated that they'd get married at some time in the future, based on her "not married yet" statement. I'm assuming, at this point based on what we've read so far and Rob's obvious distress over how she'd take the news that their being a real couple has not just been a figment of her imagination and that they were both equally invested in the relationship prior to this.
So, it looks like they both have some soul-searching and probably some painful lessons ahead of them before things get better (or before they decide to call it quits in favor of another hero, but my money's on Rob). I can see that this whole, month-long read is going to be agony for me until things get resolved, but I'm in too far to back out now. I've got to know what happens!

I don't blame Rob for his choice
It's natural that he would say yes under pressure. What I do blame him for is ignoring Kelly and telling her dad first. He should have talked to her before her dad and not ignored her all day. Because of his lack of communication (there's that word again), he has left Kelly hurting. Of course, he probably didn't know how to break the news to her, and it's obvious that he is hurting also. I am just wondering if he would have left for New York without even telling her.
I do agree with the fact that they need a separation since they've just seen each other exclusively for all those years. Is Rob indeed the hero of this story, the genie (6 foot?), or someone else? So many questions and 16 chapters left to make us suffer and laugh before the HEA. Mindy, you really have us hooked!
It's not every day
a six foot Russian ballerina genie pops up, not even in stories. I wonder how dad knew to give Kelly the lamp? Has he used it in the past?
I don't know about it being important for Kelly & Rob to separate. I know they are young, but we don't expect married couples to split up just because they are young. I think Rob handled this badly, and feel he probably didn't want to think about totally committing to Kelly or he would have spoken to her and/or included her in his plans. Boy do I feel for Kelly. It sucks to be blind-sided like that!
Interesting tale. It's going to be a long month!
... and then they bought the goat. :D
Mixed Feelings About Ballerinas
I had fun writing the ballerina-genie! (I consulted with a Russian-speaking friend to get the Russian endearments right - I was amazed to discover how different the language structure was, and how difficult it was to get a straight translation for what I thought was a straightforward English sentiment!)
I have to admit, though, that the ballerina leaves me feeling a bit torn. Like most little girls in the city where I grew up, I took ballet lessons after school in second through fourth grade. I loved learning the feet positions and the arm positions. I looked forward to recital every year.
Imagine my surprise when I learned - only a few years ago, mind you! - that my mother was THROWN OUT OF one of my recitals! My best friend and I came onstage in our sky-blue tutus and we started to dance our little section. We were so clumsy and so ri-gid-ly pre-cise about where we placed our toes that we looked like little elephants dancing. My mother and *her* best friend started laughing so hard that they were escorted from the auditorium.
So, for me? Ballerinas make me a bit green with jealousy
Mindy, glad that you're all continuing to read!

wickedgoodshari,
I agree that Rob handled it badly, but I don't get the vibe that it was because he didn't want to commit to her. I think he just knew that she would be upset and didn't know how to break it to her without upsetting her. At least, I hope that's why, though I could be wrong.

Uh oh!
Bummer! Not only is her first wish something that has the potential to cause lasting harm to Rob's career, but I have a really bad feeling about this contract she signed without reading it. I suspect it's going to come back to bite her in the butt!
I agree, papaya, that Kelly isn't being particularly lovable right now. I would have been good with her wishing that the two of them could stay together somehow, not specifying how or where so that she could have been the one willing to sacrifice. I suspect Rob isn't going to be any too pleased to have the N.Y. rug yanked out from under him, either. Wonder how that will happen? Perhaps Kelly will use her final wish to put everything back to rights after she's seen the repercussions of her actions. At least, I hope so.

I'm also not liking Kelly very much
right now. She is being totally selfish right now by wishing that Rob stay. Shame on her!
I am very curious about that genie though. Is the genie really a man? What documents did Kelly sign?
Mindy, you left us with another cliffie for the weekend.
I agree
that Kelly is behaving really badly, AND I think she's going to have terrible repercussions for what she's doing, (I did a big Uh Oh at the end of chapter 5 too!) BUT weren't we just saying how badly Rob handled his end of all of this? I guess being unexperienced (read young) can make for a very bumpy ride when trouble rears it's ugly head, as JV stated. I am REALLY glad that there was no one with a genie after I made bad choices in my life!
It also seems to me that if either of them thought of what is best for "us" instead of "me" they'd be better off.
... and then they bought the goat. :D
Cathy P,
I could be wrong (often am, unfortunatly), but I think the genie is a she rather than a he. At least, that's my take on the term ballerina. I always assumed that meant the women in the pink tutus. Now that I think about it, I wonder what they call the male ballet dancers. Hmmmm. Are they ballerinos (basing that on Spanish masculines and feminines here)? Or are they ballerinas, too, and I've just had the wrong association in my mind all these years.
FF, I assume the word is from French, since that's where ballet originated (I think). Can you enlighten me on this?

Tall Women and Bad Choices
::grin::
I'm sorry that I confused some of you about the the gender of the ballerina - the Russian woman is tall, in the classic Balanchine model for principal dancers (flat chest, very long arms, legs, and neck, incredibly strong.) Remember this discussion, though, in a few days...
As for Kelly's choice, and whether it's a bad one - the goodness or badness remains to be seen (only the Shadow knows!), but it was certainly a decision made from a place of deep emotional hurt!
I'm collecting people's wishes, over on my website - www.mindyklasky.com (Each time you click on a page, a new wish loads.) It's been fascinating to see what people wish for - some of them are funny, some are really touching, and some are just plain quirky!

I think...
If I was Kelly I might have wished that they contact me to star opposite of Rob. But that would have it's own repercussions... to know that you are there because of a genie and not because you were chosen for your talent... Now that Rob will be staying, maybe they'll call and say that they've been having a hard time getting ahold of her and that they want her?

Yup reaping what she wished. And I for one am glad they are breaking up. She has some growing to do. Rob probably does too, though it does seem that maybe he has done some. I'll bet she makes another immature wish first though...

Zing!
Well, she got the repercussions of her wish a bit faster and more powerfully than I might have imagined. I figured they'd still be together and he'd be showing her how miserable he was over not going and making her regret the wish, but I didn't foresee the break-up.
Clearly, they do need some time apart to realize what they have together and to appreciate it on a more mature level. Up to now, I think their relationship may have been a bit too much on autopilot: a "this is how it's always been and will continue to be" scenario rather than appreciating each other fully. So, now, perhaps they can figure out what's good between them and can be together by choice instead of just because they always have been.
As FF said, the old law of physics (For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.) could come into play no matter how pure the wish, a la "The Butterfly Effect", if you ever saw that movie. I'm not a big Ashton Kutcher fan, but I liked the premise of the movie, showing him that vast differences down the road for him and for his girlfriend as a result of different decisions he might make now.

Law of (Un)Intended Consequences
Growing up as a fantasy writer, I was always very interested in the *cost* of magic - what a character has to give up to achieve magical advancement. Those costs were one of my favorite things to build in the As You Wish series.
One of the first issues that I had to define with my genie magic was what characters could wish for - how easy would it be to obtain major wishes like World Peace? What would the cost be (in terms of overpopulation, for example.) That notion of "cost per wish" is one of the things that I get to explore in greater depth in HOW NOT TO MAKE A WISH (where the word limits aren't quite as tight as in an Online Read!)
I'm thrilled to see so many of you reading along - I look forward to your reactions to the next installment!

When a genie grants wishes, what could possibly go wrong?
Rob made the decision on his own
He has admitted that he was wrong, but she should have been supportive of him. Right now, they both need to grow up before they have their HEA. Mindy, I can't help but wonder where you are taking us next. LOL!
I can't help but wonder what Kelly will wish for next. I think in this situation, you could probably say "stick her foot in her mouth." That's certainly what she has done so far.
Thanks for calling my attention to the fact that the ballerina is a female, JV!
I had forgotten the word "she" and was thinking more about her tatoo, I guess. LOL!
FF, thanks for the interpretation of ballerinas in French. I also was wondering about that.
I love the idea of unintended consequences
I think she wasn't being so immature in wishing Rob would stay, but verbalizing that momentary selfish wish before realizing what she was saying. I could see the regret in her pretty quickly after she said it, but as we find out, it didn't have the result she wanted. I think when we wish for things to be different, we don't always realize what the different will be like. So it will be interesting to see how she deals with the changes in her life based on momentary whims as opposed to thinking things through clearly.
Then again, what will the consequences of thinking things through clearly be?

Just finished...
...my copy of "How Not to Make a Wish" so the gender changing genie didn't surprise me as it would have. I figure any being with that much power can surely change themselves easily - I bet it is great fun to write, a character that keeps changing.
As for this story:
I am disappointed with Rob. I feel that if a couple in a serious relationship (despite their age) is having problems they should first try to work it out, not quit - unless things can't be worked out. He didn't even try. His response came from right out of the blue - he didn't know about Kelly's wish, all he got is that she was angry - something he knew would happen because in chapter 2 he stated, "You're going to hate me." She said less than 50 words to him before he dumped her. I wonder why his reluctance to communicate hasn't caused issue before.
I re-read the beginning, because I wondered what I had missed, how bad could Kelly have been for him to do that to her? I didn't get any sense of it yet. One of the characters is off, Rob for not thinking the relationship was serious or Kelly for not knowing that there was something wrong. Meanwhile I am confused.
I'm glad to see that Kelly is regretting her wish. I think under the circumstances her angry wish was understandable; I didn't like it, but I understood what happened. I wonder how she is going to deal with it now, especially in light of Rob breaking it off.
PS Mindy, I LOVED the version of Romeo and Juliet in "How Not"...

I agree with the other ladies
Kelly is a whiner. As papaya said, if my DH agreed with me on everything, we would both be bored to death.
They do need to break it off for a while and grow before they get back together.
Mindy, now Jaze is a he. What other surprises do you have in store for us. Wish this was a full length book. I can hardly wait to read the next chapter.
I don't think she's a whiner
She's just been dealt a couple of big blows from nowhere: Her boyfriend is leaving to do a show she'd thought they'd do together, AND he broke up with her. I think she's entitled to a little bit of feeling sorry for herself and wondering what went wrong.
I do think there's some underlying issues in a relationship where they always agreed, but I have a feeling the relationship's never really been tested until now. I think he should have talked to her- about the job offer, the move, and the breakup. I imagine, though, the lack of communication is probably why she perceived things as them always agreeing on everything. It seems like when a person remains silent, rather than disagreeing, it can often be taken as agreement. I wonder if that has been part of their dynamic, given that all of this was just thrown on her.
LOVE the change in the genie! So fun to have things not as expected. :) I'm glad she got her do-over, but I hope that in making her future choices, she'll do so with a little more maturity and thought. Still, I have to wonder what the consequences of other wishes will be.

Hmmm, I still think she's a whiner. I hate not being able to see Rob's POV. I am hoping that he realizes that they may love each other but they need time apart to really figure out who they are, what they are doing and where they are going with their relationship. Granted he should communicate instead of clamming up, but now I'm wondering if she's done all the communicating for them and he's just afraid he won't be able to stand up to her and she's going to talk him into being together without really looking at their relationship. I'm sure he's hurting as much as she is.
