Special Event Online Read: The Boys’ Club by Amanda McIntyre
Proper women don’t enjoy sex. Proper women don’t become the mistress of rich lords’ boys’ clubs—and like it. Proper women don’t think of their boss while screaming the name of other men. Luckily, this isn’t the story of a proper woman.
Reader Discretion Advised: This story contains scenes of explicit sexuality.
London 1850
Lucille Smith’s passions have ruined her life—divorced, disowned from her family and now fired from her job because of them.
But when the mysterious and darkly compelling Lord Grant Thurgood recognizes that fire in Lucille, he offers her a job, and she thinks she’s finally gotten lucky. Only the job has certain…stipulations. In exchange for luxury and a very handsome wage, Lucille would act as mistress to Lord Thurgood’s Boys’ Club and fulfill the members’ every desire.
All members but one—Lord Thurgood himself. The man who, with one touch, has burned himself onto Lucille’s body, into her every thought and fantasy, and lit a fuse within her that will ultimately explode.

beyond stupid
i would think that stories like this where the women have no real choice since it's just blatant exploitation of power discrepancies would have been binned by last century latest!
Interesting start, Amanda
Very interesting that she gets propositioned by two men in such a short time. Is she wearing an "I'm for sell" sign? Definitely doesn't sound like she's had an easy life.
Just found this story and
Just found this story and read both chapters at once! Cathy, I'm with you, she must be projecting the image that her body is for sale or something! I'm not really into erotica/spice so not sure how long I will continue to read this one, but I'll try a chapter or two more to see how it goes. I don't mind erotica if the storyline is really good. I just skim through the erotic dialog!
I agree, Papaya
I'm not really much into erotica/spice myself. Give me an intriguing story, though, and I'm hooked. I do have to say that Lord Thurgood does sound intresting.
Now we just have to wait until Wednesday...
Have a great weekend everyone!
i don't agree
whether i like to read erotica or not, i do agree that women of that era didn't have much choice back then, so if she chooses to improve her level of living by her sexual desires, so be it. I do like the sound of me lord so far, he does sound interesting, and the writing is good. I'm enjoying the spice.
good work.

I'm not sure what her duties might be. Madame to a bevy of young ladies or the single object of desire for a bevy of nobles. The first would be better than the second IMNSHO.

Howdy Folks!
Sorry I'm late! I'm the guest hosty for this read and my Monday just flat out ran away on me!
First off, I want to remind everyone that while you're defintely welcome to your thoughts, I do want to be sure everyone expresses them in a polite manner. I know how Spice reads can get some folks a little sparked up. :)
Second, this is an opportunity to try reading Spice but if it's not your cuppa, no hard feelings. You can wait for the next online read. We'll be here for you. :) (I like to get that part out of the way for folks who might have missed the warning about the explicitness or think we've forsaken the other lines) But I'm pretty sure there's several people out there who will enjoy this and we want to be as welcoming to that point of view too.
As to the story, I've still got to read Chapter Two (I love being on the west coast!) but I'm rather getting a kick out of this.
It might be a bit much to say that she's got "For Sale" written on her forehead. On the one hand, she could have been the mousiest, scaredy-cat on the job with her boss, he comes across as the kind of man who'd think her being pretty in a starving time as a "for sale" sign. He was just a jerk.
The difference here is the heroine's point of view. She's already done the virginal girl thing and when that went badly, she became pragmatic about her sexuality. She's experienced and savvy enough in her character to figure she's making a choice about what she does, just like the women of today's society. It wasn't the end of the world to her that it would have been to someone else. To her, the end of the world is continued starvation.
Lord Thurgood, on the other hand, probably picked up on her response to his cues. If she'd been insulted or appalled, I get the feeling he'd have been all that was gentlemanly and proper. All in the nuance. (Says the girl who regularly has whole double entendre conversations with the hubby over the heads of three oblivious children, lol)

Aloha Dee! Glad to see you here! So far I'm intrigued with the story and will have to see how it goes! Like i said earlier, if the storyline is good, I just skim over the erotica!
Hope all is well with your hubby, Gio and the girls
Can't believe how fast they've grown!. Seems like they shouldn't be more than a year yet and they're 18 months
Time has been flying by!
Hey Papaya!
Oh yeah, kids are healthy. I'm slowly going a tad nuts, but everyone is good, lol.
Okay, as children refused to let me read Chp 2 last night, I'm even more impressed now. I guess she was just crushing on the street when he mentioned a job, because she really did seem to expect this to be normal work for a hot guy. (And really, how much better would your day job be if that were the case, sigh...)
Sexy wall paper, though. Hmmm. That was unexpected, lol.

Hi everyone,
I am really enjoying this. The boldness of the sexual content was a pleasant shock to me as I had mised the warning. All in all, I am intrigued and cannot wait to read the rest tomorrow. This is well written and I am loving it!!

Seems like she knows the job is more than housemaid, but is being coy...
Wonder how well those uniforms and gowns are going to fit!
Also wonder if he's going to keep her for himself...
I will read on... too bad we have to wait 2 days for the next chapter!
He is giving her the control
He is giving her the control in order to better control her. If she chooses to be "naughty", it absolves him of all blame.

i agree with dee.
If you don't like erotica then maybe you should read another story, instead of bashing the author and her choice of caracheters, setting and such.
There are books out there for everyone, and if this isnt your cup of tea, then you can respectuflly choose not to comment and read something else. this is after all her career, and something she loves to do. Which is obvious from the passionshe brings to her writing.

I agree that women didn't have many choices
and there are some today that probably still don't.
This is definitely getting more and more interesting. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses.
Amanda is a very good writer, the characters are developing, and she is leaving us wondering what will happen next.
LOL...
Rule 1 when talking to FF: She's gonna hold you to the letter of the law. Especially if YOU made them up, lol. (Wubs ya, FF)
Though, I think this is a great option for discussion.
He's definitely giving her choices, and yup, he probably knows that the freedom to MAKE those choices is as heady as she's describing...but by giving someone a choice are you really absolving yourself of the blame by presenting them an option?
It's rather like the discussion the two of them were having about Adam and Eve. Adam had a choice, but the world blames Eve for our forced exodus from the garden of Eden. Not to wax biblical, but was Adam really thinking to himself that Eve wouldn't get punished if he ate the fruit too? Probably not. Was Eve considering avoiding trouble by foisting a bite onto Adam? Again, I'm gonna go with no. She wanted, she chose to eat. He wanted, he chose. In the end, they were both at fault.
So, when Lord T offers her something tempting, does it do him much good to say, "Well, I didn't MAKE you do it." ? He's still complicit. And she'll be free to leave after, I'm betting.
Where does blame go when both are consenting? Is there even any place for blame at all?
Dee

Love you too, Dee. ;-)
but by giving someone a choice are you really absolving yourself of the blame by presenting them an option?
That depends on the options. Let's take the example of Sophie's choice. Both options were unacceptable, but by giving her a choice, the guard left her feeling that she was to blame.
In the case of this story, he is giving her the implicit choice of being without a home and a job in18th century London, which was like a death sentence, or selling her virtue in order to avoid the death sentence. That's not really a choice, but if she chooses the second over the first, he can always say that she had a choice.
Another example of choices that are not choices is when an employer offers a ridiculously low wage to a person who doesn't have any other options other than to be homeless and starve, and then says you "chose" to take the job, so don't comlpain about the salary or the working conditions.
I love these discussions, don't you, Dee?
"Perhaps what the average member of a group is capable of doesn't limit what a given individual can accomplish." -- Boston Globe, letter to the editor
March's Member of the Month!
Actually, lol, I do!
I don't know if it's my pragmatism and morality (I know, lol, some folks are so shocked that I have some!), but I always believe there's a choice. Growing up the way I did, I saw people take paths because they were easier, because they were expedient, because they were weak and of the very few, because they would not, could not, break their own tennants to survive. I've never understood why the concept of death is never more largely viewed as a choice--as far as the when. For some folks, "I would rather die" isn't just a turn of phrase.
He's offering her a job. He doesn't know for sure that her only alterative is homelessness and starvation. WE know that. HE knows she's a pretty lady on the street--and judging by her clothes, most likely part of the working class.
I grant you, Sophie's Choice was a mind game. But if she refused to choose, they'd have all died. Sophie chose a solution that kept someone alive because that was her imperative.
If this character, whom we know already views sex in a pragmatic way, was truly abhorrent to the option he's going to offer, she can say no. Yes, a job will be hard to find. Food will be difficult. But she can choose to walk away and try. Just like this option became surprisingly available, so might another one. Or, she might rather die than offer herself in that way.
Choosing to live, to survive at any cost, is still a choice.
Dee Tenorio
"The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."
I don't know what I'd do if
I don't know what I'd do if the choice was "dishonor" or death. I've never had to make that choice, and my background hasn't included many people who had to make that choice. So, I may just be whistling dixie. But I think/feel very strongly that when one half of the equation has all the power and the other has no power, then choice is an illusion.
But anyway, it's not the sex that bothers me. Its the power disparity that is presented as equality that bothers me. But you know that. That's one of the things that bothers me about HP. In any case, from what I've read thus far, Amanda writes very well.
BTW, I'm not shocked that you have morality.

LOL!
I'm not sure what I'd do either, actually. I'm remarkably lax about my own security, but if it involved my children's lives, I'd do anything and not regret it.
Yes, power disparity. Something tells me this story is going to involve that, too. Who really has the power in a relationship? It's sometimes a surprising answer.
Doesn't she though? I feel neigh on victorian while reading this!

i do apologize
to everyone if i came off a bit snarky on my last post. that's what happens when i have a cold and post while under the effects of a very large dose of nyquil.
I just typed what came to mind before kicking my brain in gear. i will do better next time i promise. and as for the power struggle it seems to have always been there throughout history, predominantly to the male which has always aggravated me, i do like historicals but some of the situation are quite aggravating.
as for what dee said, i'm not sure how i would handle a situation like that if it were just myself. but for my son, then all rules are out the window. you do what you have to do. And hope for the best.

Hmmmm, this is getting more
Hmmmm, this is getting more and more interesting. Wonder if she realizes her job is to service the boys' club... somehow I don't think so... she is willing to do anything Thurgood wants at this point just to please him...
great discussion Dee and FF
I don't think I'd choose how she has chosen, BUT (and that's a big BUT), women have a lot more advantages today, I'm educated, i know where to go for help if I need it, I have family and friends that really care for me and would take care of me if need be so it is easy for me not to choose the life she's chosen. If I were living in the time period with family that had thrown me out, I don't know what i would do. If I had a dependent I would most likely choose anyway I could to survive and take care of them, by myself, I just don't know although my inclination is to say I would not do what she's doing.
It's interesting...
Most women do say they doubt they would choose a lifestyle of sexual favors, but there's always been someone providing it for whatever reasons they have. We've even got a category for them in regular romance---the hooker with the heart of gold. (Where would Julia Roberts be without her?) Biblically, Historically, Fictionally. It really makes you wonder what stories in real life are out there that we never hear because the teller wasn't someone who's thoughts and opinions were "acceptable" in her own time.
Probably some really good ones. :)

More and more interesting
Thanks, Amanda, for a very thought provoking read!
I doubt that Lucille realizes yet what her duties will be, and probably doesn't care right now. Lord Thurgood has gotten her attention, and I think that is the only thing in her mind right now, other than she has a nice roof over her head and great accommodations.
Yup...
She doesn't have a clue. It'll be a very interesting chapter when he tells her about the club...

I'm betting it was Richard
I'm betting it was Richard in her bed, but I'm also betting Thurgood is going to start having second thoughts on her servicing the club and want to keep her for himself! We'll see...
I like these chapters they are much longer than the daily... guess cause they are trying to squeeze a lot in less days!

I agree, Papaya
I also think that it was Richard in her bed, and I also think that Thurgood will decide he wants her for himself only.
It will be interesting to see Friday's chapter. Maybe we'll get some answers then.
It almost has to be Richfield
First, there was the mention of the smell of cognac on his breath, which her new employer warned her that Richfield likes to overindulge in. Second, when she mentioned disturbing "the guest", her unseen lover immediately ceased and left without comment. Last, her new employer indicated that he would leave her to rest until the next day and advocated that she lock her door, so it's doubtful that he would have tried to slip into her bed.
I would like to see him try to keep her for himself. I hope that will happen, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I agree
That it was Richard in her bed and I also would just love to see Thurgood keep her for himself I just wonder how is he going to do it
I think she is just going to love the job offer especially if it means working her way up to Thurgood because after all she is very interested in him
Sure seems as though it was
Sure seems as though it was lord Richfield in her bed.
She clearly understands her contract now. Wonder how long before Thurgood succumbs... seems like he's fighting his desire for her awfully hard!
I find it interesting that
I find it interesting that she can read well enough to understand a legal contract. Most women of the workingclass at this time couldn't.

My, my
It doesn't seem like you'd find too many members of the Boys' Club willing to act as host under the stipulations of the contract! It's sort of like preparing a feast every month for your friends without being permitted to eat it yourself.
Of course, if I remember correctly the contract didn't stipulate that they couldn't indulge -- just that she wasn't required to attend to him.

She now has her answers
It had to be Richard since he left so suddenly after she mentioned disturbing their guest, and finds out he's gone when she comes down to breakfast.
She also knows the terms of her contract and what they entail, and she is willing to sign them.
I'm sure that Lord Thurgood is probably groaning about the stipulation that he had in her contract. I also think he will end up wanting her himself.
Thurgood already wants her
But he just can't have her (not yet at least) according the Boy's Club rule about the select person who provides the entertainment can't partake in it or something like that.
I don't think that Richard will fess up but who's to say
Lovin it!
I have immensely enjoyed the conversations going on here with regard to Lucille and Thurgood! Things are just beginning to heat up in this unorthodox relationship! A man obessed with beautiful "things," a woman who sees, at least at first, a means to garner self-wealth with no strings attached. She is defintely a rebel of her day but also what I would call a case of survival at all costs--perhaps even that of her heart?
and what of Richard? How will his feelings for Lucy play into this?
Never let it be said that history didn't have its forbidden and titallating, scandalous moments!
Keep your thoughts and theories coming! I love it!! You guys are fantastic at the great "what if" game!!

Such good stuff out there!
They tell me I am related to the Younger Brothers, who ran with the nortorious (but sorely misunderstood) Jesse James . I naturally blame them for my tendency toward rebellion. The rest I owe to a Scotch/Irish background with a bit of Cherokee tossed in for interest.
I have come up with so much digging through history and oftentimes you have to try hard to create a better story than the real-life version!
Of course, I am certain there are NO scandals in MY background! *Cough Cough* So you guys who have those great stories just have to change the names and the faces and write those stories!!!
I love reading a good story that you think you have it figured out and suddenly another element gets tossed into the mix. you guys might have guessed that<g>

At the end of the day, it's night.
Dee,
Ha! on the law office. I wish I had the money, but dealing with reprobates and criminals all the time would wear me down. My one stint on a jury for a criminal trial (that, unfairly, lasted through my darned birthday!) was enough to turn me off to that, what with hearing about druggies doing business on every street corner. Now, I look at neighbors outside talking in a whole different way. I tried to avoid being selected by conspicuously reading Runaway Jury during the jury selection process, but no such luck!
April, I don't know about a lot of notoriety in my family history, but if anyone needs weird character names, my family could supply you with them for a long time. Seems my distant relatives liked to have more names than the average bear with them rhyming like a chant -- and then pick the weirdest one to use to actually call the person. Go figure! My husband's step-mother's family seems to like to call everyone by both first and middle names, and 3/4 of the males seem to have Ernest as the middle name after her first husband and, coincidentally, my DH's father. (She must have a thing for the name Ernest.)
