Between the Sheets... of paper...

So you want to write for Spice...

Whether you're already published with the line, or are an aspiring author; you're somewhere in the ongoing process.

There will be days where you'll want to shout to the rooftops that you're absolutely brilliant and you've finished, submitted or sold a story. And then there are the other times; the ones where you'll moan about what a grueling job this can be, about how you were crazy to think you wanted to write.

Either way, this is the place to do it.

And remember, despite the adult content of this discussion, let's keep the language clean.

Add some SPICE to your life.

Wasn't that Rae's sex topic? Not that I don't enjoy a bit of banter about the naughty things.

Almost at the four month mark for my Spice Brief! I want to get it over with since, reading it now (it was the first story I wrote), I don't have high hopes and want to throw something good into the pile! :S

Um...  it's kinda not. With how crazy my schedule is right now I only get to add a sentence here, a paragraph there. I just have to keep reminding myself that slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks for asking though.

Hi everyone!

I think I've just finished writing my first ever Spice Brief. I was in those few moments before coming fully awake one morning when the idea appeared, and it wouldn't go away.  I started putting it down on paper, and before I knew it,I had 7000 words.  I've been working on it non-stop, and just sent it out to two writing pals for their comments.  Fingers crossed they don't think it's a big steaming pile of u-know-what!

A few questions.  I know the guidelines say 5K-15K... is that accurate? Will they really look at a 7K piece, or would they prefer a full 15K? And about how long, on average, is the wait to hear? Is it really six months? EEK.

Thanks much!!

Hi Jodie. First, kudo's on getting it done.

Yes, Susan will look at a 7k piece. And yes, I'm afraid the current wait times are closer to the 6 month mark.

Yup... four months down,

Yup... four months down, two to go :S

Angeleque, yours should be any day now! BTW, I saw your name on the schedule of a pub that we share in common- cool, didn't know you were there too!

I kind of want to ask to take my story out of consideration and sub a better one, since that was my first ever story and it sucked. can I do that?

How goes the flight/ bus search for Pittsburgh Lorie?

I keep checking my email so hopefully it will be soon. I have another place I want to submit it to if it is a no.

I have something coming out in feb. with another pub. And I know at least 2 other pubs which will consider shorter works.

I didn't know you were over there either. It'll be my second release of many to come. Laughing

Waiting...

Lauren ~ A writer can always pull a story, but you’re better off just to wait and see what she thought and have the next one ready to go. By the time the editor gets to it, she’ll hopefully remember your name, and your last story, but your voice will once again be fresh to her.

I’ve found the best price I’m going to get I think, $373 for a direct flight, on the day I want it. I’m going to buy my ticket tomorrow, maybe wednesday. I need to find my passport first… it’s in my room somewhere.

Good for you Angeleque, and good luck.

Thanks for the welcome!

And for all the info!!

I sent my brief to my sister, who called me and said "You wrote this?"  I laughed, and said yes.  She repeated herself. "YOU?" Um hum. (I'm the quiet one.)   Then she said "I don't know whether to be embarassed or give you high fives" (or something along those lines.) I was ROTFLMBO!!

I think I have a few minor modifications, then off it goes. Eeek.

Hey Jules!

LOL! I loved that I shocked her too. It's not often that happens!!!!

Good luck sending yours in! I got some feedback from the people I had read it who suggested a bit more backstory, so I'm going to tweak a bit more before I hit the send button. I'd like it to have the best chance possible (especially with that 6 month wait, LOL!)

Lauren, they are a BLAST to write!

And Lorie, this is just so far outside my usual writing style that it was bound to shock her.  I'm usually a Supers kind of writer!

No, Lorie, the r was on a Blaze, but I wasn't surprised (it was the second thing that I wrote, ever) and got some great feedback on it :D

Lauren

Aw, that's too bad about the Blaze R, but good for you for subbing it.

partial request

Okay I'm such a dork. I forgot I subbed a query during an online conference back in August to an Harlequin editor for my dark urban fantasy erotic thriller.

Well I got an email today requesting the partial.

I am so jazzed (now really need to find a CP to help me make it shine). though still no word on my brief. But at least there is some good news.

Partial

It is Angel, excellent news.

Hey folks!

Hi Lorie! I haven't bumped into you yet around here. :) I have news -- I'm trying a Brief! I never really imagined I'd write any erotica, I don't even read much of it but I love Megan Hart and Sarah McCarty, (and Charlene Teglia outside of HQ) and I just finished an anthology for Blaze that showed me I really like short formats, so I decided to give a Brief a try!

I have 5 keepable pages so far, no sex yet, but getting there soon. ;) It's a paranormal, and it is fun -- I thought writing 100 pages for the anthology was fun, but it's amazing how liberating writing the really short short can be -- and on top of that I can really let go and get creative with the sex, so this should be interesting!

Good to see you. I am working on my story today, and having some fun with it -- who knows if it will be anything close to what eds want, but I'm giving it a go. First person, which is really strange for me, never having done it before, but I think perfect for this kind of thing...

Hey Sam. Great to see you. Fabulous news, that you're trying a Brief. I'll be interested in learning more.

HI Everyone!

Lots of new faces around.  Lots of familiar ones. *waving*

So *looking around*  where do we keep the chocolate and chamagne in the new digs?  Can't have a place where we discuss writing and waiting without chocolate and champagne.  Hmm,  also think we need an Alpha workout room. Just for inspiration,  of course.Wink

New Digs...

Lorie looks around, an odd little smile stirring as she contemplates Sarah's request.

First, the much required munchies bar... With a shrill, stadium like whistle Lorie signals for a large group of workmen (all nice to look at of course). They listen closely to what she wants to see and then divide to begin working.

Soon, there will be a full service, fully stocked, 24 hour kitchen/dining area standing in the front right corner of the building.

In the front left corner, we'll have a lounge, complete with desks, big screen tv's for movies and video games, (inspiration for when we're stuck) state of the art electronics, and top of the line lazy boys for those moments where y'all are coming down from a three day writing jag and need a nap.

The back left corner will house a gym, and the majority of it's occupants will be our heroes, who like to make sure they inspire us in every way possible.

The back right corner... a spa, because everyone could use a spa day.

Upstairs, well... this is for the Spice writers... I'll leave that area to your imaginations.

New Digs

*looking around* Oooh,  very nice, but what color shall we paint the walls?

I'd say it's early.

My suggestion is something soft, something neutral, so that all our cover posters pop out well.

Question for those of you who've already submitted...

OK, I've read the submission guidelines for Briefs. I know it needs to be submitted electronically, with the document as a Word attachment. Got that part.  When I set up the email, do I format it like I would a query letter? Do I need to provide my writing experience, a brief paragraph about the story? Help!!!

You know what this means...I'm ready to submit!  Woo Hoo! It's been polished as shiny as it's going to get...so it's time to send it in.

Thanks!

PS...Great room...love the spa...need the chocolate!

Am I late? Am I late? I brought the chocolate!

Congrats Jodie, that's wonderful! Feels good, doesn't it?

Lorie and Sarah, methinks there is a joint project in the works there? The alphas take on the Spice Spa? Just picture yourself, lounging in a steamy pool, rose petals floating in the silky water, scenting the air... Cain seated by your feet, naked, of course, dropping bites of luscious chocolate covered strawberry into your mouth in between sips of Italian sparkling wine...

Whoo! I needed that! Off to write!

Spice Line Guidance for submission

Hi everyone:

I'm relatively new. I almost have a complete manuscript. I don't think it fits anywhere but spice. I read that agented submissions are preferrred. I am wondering if I should agent shop when it's done and then try to see what the agent thinks of pitching to Spice, or should I just pitch it myself? I have the synopsis and query letter. I guess right now I am jittery and fearful. I am really glad to see HQ Spice. I don't read much these days that doesn't have an erotic element to it, and that's what I tend to write. I'm not good at euphemisms or being mushy. I'd be grateful for anyone's tips. I am trying to get people who I never have to see again besides my husband to read the manuscript. I'm shy about it. My family had negative feedback for me writing erotic fiction in the first place. I have had two short stories published, under a different name :)

Thanks to everyone for reading my post, I feel really comfy on these forums! I think I'll get myself drunk and then submit it to Spice or an agent. Not drunk while writing but you know as I prepare the envelopes.

Thanks many air kisses to the wonderful people on these boards!

Corinne

Feel the fever coming. You're shaking and twitching. You can scratch all over but that won't stop your itching.
---Depeche Mode Dream On---

Hello Jodie and Corinne,

Hello Jodie and Corinne, and welcome!

With my Spice Brief, I pasted the query in the body of the e-mail, and attached the story with a title page containing a blurb in the same document. This is how I've been taught to do e submissions; if this isn't what Susan wants I'm sure Lorie will say so :) But I say go for it, and enjoy it while you're doing it! And, if you've subbed and it's been received, you will get an auto reply.

THEN you sit down and buckle in for the wait... which actually goes a lot faster than you'd think.

Congrats to you both for finishing!
