*vbg* Yes, Hall, you

*vbg* Yes, Hall, you snagged the first post.

It's been insane for me. The older two of my brood are currently with their father leaving me with a very bored nine year old. So, I've been reading posts in here, nodding along with ya and nothing stays in the brain by the time I'm set to actually say something. It's been so hot, so he and I have been sitting poolside. The only thing I seem to be working on is a tan. I take the alphasmart with me, but he's not a great swimmer yet and peer pressure is such a wonderful thing, so he's delving into the deeper water, gets nervous, gets out and wants me near by. And unlike a lot of other parents, I can't just drop him off at the pool and hope that the lifeguards will keep an eye on him.

We'll be going again today--I think it's to be the hottest day yet...I know it's nice to get into cool water.

How's everyone else doing?

Long time no post!

Hey, ladies!

I've been reading posts and catching up, but I haven't had time to post myself, because all week I've been teaching Vacation Bible School at my church. I had the kindergarteners. And boy, did I get a rough crew! I AM EXHAUSTED. lol!

Actually, I too pooped to to say anything else. LOL!

Have a good weekend!

Swimming Instructors

As a former lifeguard/swimming instructor, I think I could go for a hero in that line of work.  There are lots of possibilities, from a heroine with kids who take lessons to a heroine who's terrified of the water and wants to conquer that phobia. Then there are the beach lifeguards...and surfing instructors...and the shore patrol...  Lots of great action possibilities with these ideas!

it's been hot here too, but

it's been hot here too, but as I always remind my kids, it's summer, it's supposed to be hot.  I agree Rae I can't just drop my kids off at the beach/pool/lake and assume someone else will be available.  We have a few beaches in this area without lifeguards and I've seen parents drop off their under 12 children even with signs warning not to do so.

As for what I'm doing this summer after two years of being in this house I've decided its time to eliminate all of the unnecessary clutter.  And have a yard sale.  I haven't had a lot of success with yard sales and my neighbor next door had one last year that basically bombed.  But a friend of mine suggested just price everything as low as you can, after all the goal is to get rid of it, and immediately take what doesn't sale to the donation boxes.   I'm thinking of maybe doing a combo yard/bake sale just to maybe generate a bit more traffic but I'm not sure if that will be worth the extra effort.

Anyone have any yard sale tips they'd like to share?

Sandy

Yard sales

My friend Susan is a yard sale guru. It really depends on your area, If you're in a higher end area, you might be able to price higher end items higher. If not, price it all low. We did one together and my take was $167. VHS tapes will sell for $1, DVDs you can get $2. Hardback books will go for $1 and paperbacks for 25 cents. You might get up to $3 for some books if they are those big coffee table things. Try to keep everything under $10 unless you are willing to take checks. Most yard sale goers pay with cash. Keep it all divisible by 5 to make counting easy.

Start at 7 AM (or earlier) and be sure to have everything visible from the front--so don't make them go to the backyard. If you have a lot of items for college dorms/apartments, make sure to say that and you'll get the back to school shoppers.

Good luck. And yes, take the boxes right to Goodwill and get your tax receipt of everythign that doesn't sell.

Thanks Michelle!

I've only done a few yard sales and admittedly they're fairly hit or miss.  No guarantees.  I told my kids whatever they put out if it sales they can pocket the money.  Maybe that will inspire my daughter who is now 9 to get rid of some toys she's had since age 3.  LOL

Sandy

Happy Monday!

Sandy, Very cool on decluttering.  Hope the yardsale's a success.  I don't do them, but my dh and I go hunting antiques at them.  My biggest tip is be willing to dicker if you really want rid of things.  He's been known to walk if he feels the price is too high.  Even if he wants it.  Great tips, Michele! Aurelene, I so want to see both DK and MM!! Tons to do here this week before I leave next week.  To keep life interesting, I have jury duty on Friday!  Sheesh! Holly

Monday, already?

Morning.

Well, we had a pretty uneventful weekend here at Casa Rae. The best laid plans were to go to Erie for the weekend and attempt to catch a glimpse of one of my favorite authors....but alas, I didn't know it was bike week and there weren't any hotels to be found for the dates I needed a room. *sighs*

I'm thinking perhaps, there are all kinds of possibilities with swim instructors. Glad you found your way over here Lynette.

Rae, who forgot she had a meeting and will bbl

Mondays s....

Today has been a horrid Monday. My daughter's meeting did not go well and the email that I sent afterwards was scathing as the district representaive failed to adhere to district policies (she wrote) and even couldn't find my daugher's file.

Needless to say, they denied her acceleration, but we are meeting with her principal August 4 and Alison will get to plead her case and discuss. We'll see. I am not happy. Since I also work in the district it makes life a little more difficult.

On the upside, I got the end written and simply need to read and revise. I'll do that sometime before the 1st when I send it in. I talk to my editor tomorrow about the book out in March. I also got a new phone, which is nice as the back kept falling off the other one.

Hope everyone's week is better than whatever it was today.

Happy Tuesday, everyone. I found you! Wink

Michele- I hope you get things straightened out with your daughter. Congrats on typing The End. That always feels so good.

Wednesday

Hi, Ann!  I had a great time writing yesterday...more of the same today, I hope!  Thursday I get my haircut for the conference, and Friday I have jury duty.  Odds of being picked is slim with a husband and two brothers who are cops, but who knows??!!  Holly

Hump Day

Holly, sounds like me for Jury Duty. I got picked for one DUI case and was about to be picked for another when I raised my hand when they asked different stuff. I had to approach the bench and the judge looked at me funny, like he was trying to place me. My step-dad worked for the court house for years. I knew both arresting officers and when he asked me how I knew them, I whispered my dad used to be their boss when he was on the town's council. He said, "who's your dad?" When I said his name, the judge smiled and said, "I thought so." Both attorney's scratched my name off the list, one in black sharpie. *vbg* Here's hoping they do the same for you.

Four more days until my family is complete again and my older two children return. After that, we'll be planning a trip to Erie before school starts for the oldest. Hopefully it won't be a weekend that has an attendance like the Bike one. That's a lot of people mulling around Erie. My youngest and I watched Dirty Jobs the other day and they were on the Island dubbed Vomit Island in Erie and now he really wants to go. It has another name and I'll have to look it up or maybe Holly can give me the correct spelling, I think it's West Sister Island...anyhow, it's an Island with nothing but birds enhabititing it. When humans are allowed on it once a year to tag the birds, they panic and well...vomit is their defense. Kinda gross, but Mike Rowe was hysterical and now the nine-year-old definitely wants to go to Erie.

Happy Writing and I hope I didn't gross anyone out.

Rae

PS Michele, hang in there and stick to your guns.

Is it Wednesday already?!?!?!

Holly- I'm glad the writing is going well. Mine is, too!

Rae and Holly- I never get picked for jury duty. Frown Well, that's not quite true. Once I did. About 15 minutes into the thing, they decided to settle! Rae, it sounds as if you're counting the days to see your two oldest return. That's a good sign. Wink Vomit Island, though... Funny!

Tomorrow I leave for Indianapols, to visit my parents and other relatives. I'll be seeing old friends, too, but I think I already told you that. Or did I? Reunion time!

I'll be back Monday.

When will it be next week?

I've been busy busy busy. I wish I could say I've been writing though. I live in a beach resort kind of town, so a lot of people we know vacation in town for the summer. Well, they think when that happens I'm on vacation too.. LOL! I'm like, "Uh, I have to food shop and scrub my toliets. I can't hang out at the beach all week with you." LOL!

Anyhew, it's been a lot of entertaining. I'm pooped! I honestly cannot wait until fall. My social life will be nice and quiet. (Just the way I like it) Laughing

Ann: have a safe trip!

Sandy Sue: Michele had some great tips. I second the early morning thing. There are professional yard-salers in our area and they leave the house looking for yard sales around 6AM.

Aurelene: I realy want to see the new Batman movie!

Michele: sorry about your daughter. I hope you get them to change their minds.

Later, all!

Thursday!

Rae, I've never heard of it.  Are you sure it was in Erie, or simply in Lake Erie??  I'll have to do some surfing!  I was sad you guys couldn't come, but hoping you make it soon! Ann, Have a great trip and visit!! JenniferS, That would exhaust me as well!  We'll both welcome fall.  You for the quiet, me...well, I adore the season! Holly

I would definately say she has enough trouble already without her curiosity getting her in more. Believe it or not more than once in my life I got called Eleanor (not that there is anything wrong with the name) because Ellen was not a popular name when I was growing up. But then I was named for my maternal grandmother.

I'm back

I'm back from my vacation week just in time for everyone to leave for SF. Frown I'm not going but I hope that everyone has a blast. Let those of us who stayed home know what happened.

Rae, sorry to hear your getaway to Erie fell thru. Maybe you'll get another chance this summer.

Michele, so sorry to hear things didn't go well with your dd's test. But congrats on finishing your ms.

Holly, my dd just got her questionaire for jury duty and was completely appaulded. She's already going to have a crazy hectic schedule this fall with eighteen credit hours and two jobs. Sheesh. How did yours go? Did you have to report?

Ann, hope you had a wonderful reunion.

Jennifer S, hope your life slows down a little so you can squeeze in some writing.

Hope, good to see you here. Are you ready for NaNo again? LOL. Can you believe it's only three months away. Where did the summer go?

Holly, huge congrats on the contest win. That's totally awesome. You are on a roll.

Aurelene, your luau sounded really nice. Glad you had a nice time.

Okay, I'm off to tackle a ton of emails and dig back into my story. I also have to squeeze in some time to work on my fair entries. This is my busiest time of the year.

Have fun at the conference,

Safe Trips

Everyone going to San Fran, have a safe trip, take lots and lots of photo's and have fun!

We went away this weekend up to Gettysburg and met my kids there, unexpectedly. We were supposed to meet them in Breezewood on Sunday and then their grandparents changed plans on us. But it's all good. I'm glad to have my kids back. We spent the night in Breezewood and meandered a different way back home and literally stumbled across the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site. I have pictures up on my Facebook and Myspace, and my personal blog. I think I'm going to start doing a personal blog over here as well.

Rae, who's still tired from all the walking....

San Fran

I heard the weather is cooler than normal, so pack some sweaters!  (and maybe a windbreaker---the damp wind can cut right through sweaters!)  Looking forward to those pictures and all the stories!

Jennifer, good to see you here, too!  Yes, I've been doing research already for NaNo.  Just turned one volume in (unfinished, but it was written in the 1920s and I didn't happen to have my handy Latin, Greek and Italian translators sitting right by me, though I managed all right with most of the French).  I'm considering doing the novel I was going to do last year before the HAR editor pitch challenge came up and got me working on that instead.  (Although I may chicken out and do something else a little more normal instead.....UndecidedSurprisedWinkCool  In fact, I probably will, since I have another one in mind already set in the same area as Desert Dreamer, with some of the same secondary characters.  Nothing like having the background work already done!  Of course, the scary romance has been bugging me to write it since about this time last year....  Decisions, decisions....  UndecidedInnocent)

reunion and weather

Thanks for the "have fun" wishes, everyone. I had a blast!! It's so fun to reconnect with people who came of age (or started to) right along with me. We have a bond, a connection, that cannot be broken. Plus we all laughed up a storm, which makes life fun. A good 10 percent of the class (or those we located, which, out of almost 1000 was about 350) have died for a variety of reasons: cancer and other diseases, car accidents, one homicide, two heart attacks. Aack! Makes a person appreciate every single moment!

Due to storms, my plane was delayed. The airline switched me to a different airline, and I arrived in Seattle three hours later than planned. Sans luggage, but they tell me that will be delivered today. I hope so, since a few things in the suitcase need washing and ironing in time for SF. I leave Wed. morning. I'm so excited, but will also be glad when all the traveling ends for a while.

Have a great rest of the day, one and al.

Hi, Ann!

Glad you arrived in one piece, even if your luggage hasn't yet!  I hope the weather clears up for the flight to SF.  Glad you were able to reconnect with friends there in Seattle.  I've lost touch with many of my school friends, due to moves, etc.  Just knowing what has happened must be a kind of blessing, anyway.  Wish I knew where my chums are...

Like me, my editor isn't going to be in SF, so I shipped her my finished CEO book tonight. It was due August 1, so she's getting it a little early. I just finished my copy edits for my March 09 book. The CEO book is also a 09 release, but I don't know what month yet.

It feels awesome to be done. Sure, there will be some revisions (there always are) but for now, I can relax and get up at 5:15 tomorrow to go distribute yearbooks at 7 AM.

I'm hoping to go to DC next year so I've opted to skip this year, since I've been to and spent nights in SF, and have never been to DC.

I can't remember everything, but welcome Hope

 and welcome back Jennifer.

Glad you made it home and your luggage arrived in time Ann.

Congrats on the HOBHR making another placing! I just LOVE that book! It's what has me wanting to read more of your work. Can I say your addictive without sounding too weird? Lol

I'm working on getting my wip out by labor day- hopefully before then even. I have a couple of ideas I want to prepare one of for Nano this year. I didn't get to participate last year due to internet issues (AOL- need I say more?), but with dd having broadband I'm hoping to get in this year. Hope to see some of you there.

Rae- yep. We decided to run to the snow a few years ago spur of the moment  before it was all gone for the nearing summer. Got up there, played and had a blast then couldn't find a room that night! Yep- everyone seemed to have the same idea we did about the last snow of the year. We finally found a room- notice I said A room- with two beds that we crammed 6-7 people into for the night. Never let it daunt our fun though. I guess we're an adventuresome bunch. Lol Hope youo get another chance to see Erie.

Hi Michelle! Hope you get things straightened out for dd.

Yay on typing the end (Holly? Ann? Michelle?) I'm sorry. Embarassed I know it was ONE of you.

Michele, I read on the HAR blog that you got a Wii, congrats. Let me know if you like it. I've been toying with the idea of getting one. We have a PS2 now and dh and I enjoy it in the winter months. BTW, I saw you wrote that your editor didn't go to SF, but I thought I saw that Joann and Kathleen were attending, how many editors does American have? Curious minds want to know. Congrats on finishing your CEO book and shipping it early. Hats off to you.

Hope, so you're already doing your prep work for NaNo. That makes one of us. I don't know if I'm going to do it this year or not. I still have last yr's ms to revise. We'll see. There's a lot that can happen between now and then. Good luck with whatever story you chose.

Holly, glad to hear you got called off jury duty so you could make it to the conference. Dd asked what she'd do if she got called to serve, she's worried about missing her science classes and labs. Things you just can't make up. I told her she'd have to plead her case to the judge. You should have seen the appaulded look on her face. LOL.

Ann, glad to hear you got your luggage back before you had to leave for SF. Boy, you are a lady on the go this summer.

Jennifer S, congrats on getting back to writing. You go girl. I'm struggling right now to squeeze it all in.

Lisa62, so glad to hear you've set a deadline for yourself on finishing your story. Fingers crossed you make it.

My other big news is dd just finished her summer semester and has graduated with her associates degree. Yippee!!! So we are going out for Japanese tonight to celebrate. She gets a three week break and then she's back in classes working on her bachelor's. She wasn't going to get her associates but I told her why not. She only had to take a couple extra classes this summer to fulfilll the requirements and since she doesn't know what the future holds, it may help her.

Okay, I'm off to do some crit'ing. Have a great day everyone.

Jennifer
