The State of Parenthood with Lynette Kent
Join us this week as we talk to author Lynette Kent about her new Harlequin American book entitled: SMOKY MOUNTAIN REUNION.
About The Author
A child of the North Carolina mountains, Lynnette Kent seems destined to find herself living anywhere but the mountains. Her family moved to Florida when she was nine, inspiring her with a lifelong love of the ocean and a long day spent at the beach. After marrying a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, she moved with him to Nashville, Tennessee, while he attended medical school and from there to Virginia, California, and Washington, D.C.
Along the way Lynnette and her husband were blessed with two lovely daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca, and two different sets of dogs — cocker spaniels Prudence and Chloe, and their successors, miniature dachshunds Schultz and Dooley.
Now settled pretty permanently in eastern North Carolina, Lynnette tries to remember that mountain flowers don’t grow well in the heat of a Sandhills summer, that fall isn’t an abrupt change of season but a gentle, lingering evolution, and that winter without snow can be…well, endured.
Involved with several local music groups, she plays bassoon for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and directs a children’s choir at her church. Girl Scouts have been a part of her life for 12 years now, and she remains the leader for her younger daughter’s Cadet troop, emphasizing outdoor education and adventure.
Contrary to her husband’s preference for nice hotels, Lynnette would rather sleep in a tent than a bed, and would rather rake leaves than vacuum carpet. And she’d rather spend more time writing romance than raking or vacuuming. Or, for that matter, sleeping!

Welcome, Lynette
My ex-husband is from North Carolina and it's a gorgeous state. Mountains and ocean.
Would you like to tell us about this book and how it came into conception?

North Carolina
Thanks, Rae! Sorry to be a day late--I spent the weekend at the beach, and yesterday was "recover from the vacation" day.
The idea for Smoky Mountain Reunion developed out of an article I read in "Southern Living" magazine about a school for troubled girls in the North Carolina mountains. I immediately started wondering what would happen if one of the students had a crush on her male teacher, and how I could write a story that would bring them together for a happy ending.
I love the NC mountains--I was born there and we lived in Asheville until I was 9. A few years ago, I realized that everywhere I go, I try to recreate the gardens I remember from my childhood, with irises and lupines, delphiniums and columbine, roses and hollyhocks and candytuft. When you're living in San Diego, CA, though, or coastal Virginia or the Sandhills of North Carolina, that's just not going to work. You need the cool, misty mornings of the mountain summers, the long cold winters, to succeed with those plants. Ah, well. At least in the Sandhills, I have my horses. And my pumpkin plants are looking fabulous!

Your childhood gardens sound breathtaking.
Your concept sounds very exciting. I thnk every woman and even some men can relate to crushes on their teachers, but not everyone gets to fulfill them. Can't wait to read the book.

Smokey Mountain Reunion was
Smokey Mountain Reunion was a good book despite my (okay, I'm a mother of daughters) initial euw to the idea of a teenage girl and a male teacher thing. Was exploring the topic a difficult one for you or did you find it no problem? You did a very nice job with character development of both Nola and Mason.
I love stories set in the mountains and remember visiting Smokey Mt National Park when I was a lot younger. So, I am always drawn to books set in the Appalachian Mountains.

Daughters
Hi, Nancy!
I have 2 daughters, myself, so I completely understand your hesitation.
My editor and I knew from the beginning that I would need to be careful with this storyline. But any man I consider hero material would only behave honorably when faced with a teenager's crush on him. In the end, the distance Mason kept between them when Nola was a student served to increase the conflict between them in the present-day story. That's a good thing--you can't have too much conflict!
Lynnette
Lynette,
I'll admit that I had to think about this for a second, but then I realized it was years later. I'm assuming, because I haven't read the book that Mason acts very much like the hero in Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan. That's the first thing I thought about when I read the excerpt.
As for the mountains, we love to venture into them here in PA when the leaves start to change. It's gorgeous.

I did end up liking the book--it was just that initial reaction. It was clear that the relationship developed fully as both Nola and Mason were adults. The story had intensity, passion and charm.

turtles
Okay, this is my first attempt to post, so if anything turns out screwy, not my fault.
This arrived in my book order last week, but, since you're my friend, I'll admit I haven't read it yet since dh is on vacation.
But, I read the excerpts on eHarlequin.com & I would have bought it even if I didn't know you because the kid's rescuing a turtle. So, guess I have to read the book to see how the turtle does...or do you want to give me a clue?
pam, who may or may not be pleased she's learned to post here
dogs
Hey, Lynnette, your bio is out of date--no mention of Beau or Puck or Bently (Bentley?). And nothing about the horses! The next book has mucho horses, you know.
At least the daughter info is still accurate.
Bio
Thanks, Pam, for the reminder. I do need to update the write-up, adding in the five horses, the farm and the dogs. Sometimes, it comes down to writing the book or doing the "other stuff" and writing the book always wins!

Thank you so much for participating with us this week. I also wanted to invite you to check out the Harlequin American folder, there's a discussion in there where the American authors participate. I have to archive the old thread today and create a new one and once that's done, I'll come back in here with a link. In there, you can keep us updated as to what you're doing and we can discuss your characters and animals.
It's also where I'll be moving this discussion and leaving it open for others to participate if they wish.
