Patricia Thayer's "The Rancher's Doorstep Baby"

Cole Parrish arrived at the Bar H ranch to work. That was all. Not to settle down, and certainly not to be tempted by the stunning redhead running the ranch all by herself.

Now a little baby has arrived on the doorstep—and Rachel has gone from auntie to mother overnight. She needs all the help she can get…but Cole can't stay.

He never promised anything.

Yet Rachel's heart is stolen by the sight of the brooding rancher cradling the tiny infant, and she has to ask herself—if he's so set on leaving, why is Cole still here?

Glad to be aboard!

One of my favorite things to do is talk about my books. And as most of my readers know, I love cowboy heros. Men of the West. They're honest, hard working guys who put in long days. There's something sexy about a man in worn jeans, chaps, cowboy boots and a Stetson hat. Oh, my.

In The Rancher's Doorstep Baby, my hero, Cole Parrish, is a drifter who feels he's lost everything. He shows up at the Bar H Ranch to work for Rachel Hewitt, but when the time comes, he can't seem to move on. Then he's a total goner when baby Hannah appears on the doorstep.

I hope you enjoy the story.

Evolution of cowboys

Welcome Pat, it's nice to have you here in our community to get to know you and your books!  I know that many of our readers are hard core cowboy story lovers, can you tell me if over the course of your career the cowboy hero has changed or evolved in any way?

Cowboys today

I model my cowboys/ranchers after a gentleman I met years ago when I first began writing.

Hence Barrow has been a rancher all his life.  He just recently died this past summer at the age of 97.  Over the years, I was privileged to get to know him and his family.  I've heard so many wonderful stories from Hence.  And I also modeled my mentor charcter, Hank Barrett, in my Texas brotherhood series, after Hence.

Now, there's a third generation of Barrows ranching on three different ranches around the Midland/Odessa area, with a fourth generation not to far back.  I know Brandan and Michelle, and Holley and Michael are carrying on the important things their granddad taught them.

I believe things change over the years, but we all want to hold on to what's important.  I feel that's honesty, courage and a sense of family.  That what I want my hero to represent.

How Wonderful

Pat,

Reading where you got your inspiration gave me chills. That is so neat that you were able to share Hence's stories with your readers, so to speak. I always love getting a behind the scenes look.

Thank you for sharing that.

Have you had any luck with the Air Force Base for your next book? He's quite a contrast to a Rancher.

Rae

Air Force base

Rae,

I've talk to the PR department at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX.  I'm learning all sorts of things that's really helping my story.

For the readers, I'm doing two more stories for my Texas Brotherhood series, they'll be books 7 and 8.   Luke and Brady Randell are cousins to my orginal 6 Randell brothers.

Brady is a captain in the Air Force who is an F-16 pilot and had to eject his aircraft and tore up his leg on landing.  He's recuperating back at the family ranch in San Angelo, TX

I talked with a PR person, Gab Myers, who's been very helpful.  The story is coming together.

Just wanted

Just wanted to say Hi and I started reading your books last year when I picked up the three book trilogy Rocky Mountain Brides. I read The Rancher's Doorstep Baby last month and really enjoyed it. So what's up next and when can I expect it. Will be waiting and watching for more.

Hello, Just wanted

I have another books coming this year.

A Bride For Wandering Creek Ranch is out in April 2008.

The Texas Ranger Takes a Bride is out in August 2008.

Then in January and February of 2009 I've written two more stories for my Texas Brotherhood series.

I hope you continue to enjoy my books.  You can also check my website at www.Patriciathayer.com

                                        Thank you,  Pat

Boy, you've been busy!

Pat,

Sounds like you've been busy! I'm glad the AFB has been helpful. This story really piqued my interest as I told you I was in the AF.

Two questions for you:

Who is your favorite 'Rancher' and why?

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Rae

I love your books!

Mrs. Thayer,

I loved your book The Racher's Doorstep Baby! I've read it three times in the last month. It is wonderful. What are your next books sabout? I can't wait to find out.

"Reading is my passion."

Favorite Rancher

Rae,

I don't understand the questions.

You mean who was my favorite rancher in my books? And I'm not sure what plotter and pantster mean, either.

Pat

I Love Your Books!

Please call me, Pat

And thank you so much!  Every writer wants to hear that her work is loved.

What I'm working on right now is two more books for my Texas Brotherhood series that will be out January 2009.  Luke and Brady Randell's stories.  They're half brothers who  have never met until they inherited their father's ranch.

I have a book coming out in April 2008  A Bride For Wandering Creek.

In August 2008 A Bride For a Texas Rancher.  (They got a little carried away with the bride theme)

Sounds Good

Sounds good to me will be waiting for them. Wrote the dates in on my calendar so I wouldn't miss them. Thanks

Sounds good

Favorite Rancher

Rae,

I think I figured out what you mean about plotter or pantster.

Yes, I do plot. I have a plot group I work with to help develop my stories. But when I put my butt in the chair, a lot of the time, I'm flying on my own. So I guess that makes me a pantster, too. I love it that my characters have a mind of their own.

Pat

Favorite Hero

Who was your favorite hero to write about and why? Is what I meant. And yes, you figured out the other question.

Rae

Loved The Book

Read this book earlier this month and loved it.  I have enjoyed all of your books.

Does the partner get his own book?  I hope so.

How odd that you would talk about Randolph AFB.  My brother was stationed there twice and when he retired and worked civil service he worked there.  I have been to the base several times and it is very beautiful.  If you have some questions I could ask him and I am sure he would be happy to help you.

Elaine

Hi Pat, from Durant, Oklahoma!

Guess who!  It's Marsha!  How fun that I happened on to this forum!  I didn't know that Hence had passed away this past summer....so did Daddy.  On June 15.  He was 94.

I have been meaning to call you, but have been so busy I don't think about it until it's too late.  I loved this last book!  I really piqued my interest with the wind turbine leases.  My mother's brother lives in west Texas north of the Midland/Odessa area and he has been telling us about the turbine farms out there.  In addition to that, we just leased our mineral rights on the ranch at Boswell, so that made it that much more intersting!

Keep up the good work!  I can't wait to read more!

Hugs,

Marsha

Love that book

Elaine,

I'm glad you liked my book. And you're right, I probably have several questions about the AF, but I'm lucky that I found someone at Randolph to answer my questions. And I aways have lots of questions.

But who knows, I might take you up on your offer.

Pat

Hi, Durant!

Marsha!

I can't believe this.  I think about you all the time.

Hey, everyone, one of my earlier books was written around Durant, OK and I called the college there and Marsha answered the phone.  Little did I know that she was an avid reader of romance.  We got to know each other, and she was gracious enough to invite me there, and stayed in her home.  Met her family out at the farm.  Her mother made me Chocolate gravy over biscuits for breakfast.

Marsha, I'm sorry to hear about your father.  How are you and your mother doing all right?  As you can tell I've been busy writing, and with grandkids.  I still have all boys, and another one coming in June.

Please, call me.  Or I'll call you.  Are you at the same number?

                Your friend,  Pat

You just

never know where you're going to find me these days!  I joined the 100,000 book challenge here at eharlequin.com, and I've been checking the site quite often.  I found the link to this forum and of course had to come over!

Mama and I are doing ok.  She's still out at the farm and doing pretty well.  Daddy was in the nursing home the last year and a half.  He just sat in his wheelchair and went to sleep after lunch, on the Friday before Father's Day.  We, of course, miss him terribly and the holidays were hard, but we're so thankful he didn't suffer and went so peacefully.

Wow!  Your family is growing!  I can't believe you still have only boys in your family.   Ours continues to grow also, a great-niece born in October and two more on the way this spring.

I was promoted to "head" of special ed. on our campus last year, that only means I have more paperwork....nothing spectacular!

I will give you a call, I don't know if you have my cell nubmer or not.  I think that's how I called the last time.  3812 is the last numbers.  I think about you a lot, but am so bad about doing anything about it.

Hugs,

Marsha

Hey, from your biggest fan!

I have read all of your books, but "Just Maggie" is and will always be my favorite.  I am so proud of you and your success.  If you haven't guessed yet, this is your little sis from North Carolina and I AM YOUR BIGGEST FAN.

Love ya,

Mary

cowboys

I read The Rancher's Doorstep Baby recently. I
picked it up during one of those tear out the hair hectic times in real
life and it was a perfect read to center things.

I don't know about bad boys (the title to the link that brought me here). Bad boy or not, the hero here had several qualities that made him something special. And of course, Cy, the ranch hand too. Personally, what I like about western set romances is when the hero, rough and tumble cowboy, still has a soft heart. Knights...cowboys...men of honor...

COWBOYS

I feel the same about cowboys.  I know it sounds old fashion, but I'd like to think there's a certain code that cowboys live by.  And I hope my stories show that kind of man.

My old rancher friend told me once that cowboys sometimes get a bad rap, but in truth, most of them are just honest, hard working men.

I  have to say I've been to a very rodeos, and their aint no sissy out there climbing on those bulls.  And if you've ever been to a roundup, you've got to use a lot muscle to flip those calves and hold 'em down.

You got to respect a man like that.   And I love to write about them.

                               Pat

Cowboys!!!

MMMM I love 'em!  I do believe that the cowboy has gotten a bad rap in the past.

I have to agree with Mary, Pat,  Just Maggie was one of those books that I will never forget!  I loved Wildcat Wedding, for obvious reasons, but Just Maggie is the one that hooked me!

cowboys

We dh and I spent our honeymoon in Wyoming. We went to a bison ranch. it was quite interesting to talk to a real cowboy. Rugged yes, but definitely a family man.  Now that you make me recall that..fits in with your romance very well.  The hero in The Rancher's Doorstep Baby was very nicely done. Smile

Thanks for all the praise.

Ladies,

I think we all agree that we love cowboys, so maybe you could help me out.

I'm putting together a basket to be auctioned off for charity. Of course my books will be in it. But I need other ideas so some one will bid on it.

I have a western theme. I'm calling it, Romance on the Ranch.

I thought I'd get an western blanket. I found a candle that is called, Firewood. I have a Wild Wild West Cook Book, and some Texas Pecan barbecue sauce.

I think I'll get a bottle of Texas wine. A gift certificate to a western clothing store. Also I found chocolate from Texas.

Does anyone have ideas for me? Remember I have to mail this, so keep it little and light. Brenda Novak is doing an action for the the Diabetes Assoc. that being held in May.

western delights

well books are not light but maybe some western romances, like a signed copy of one of your romances. Some kind of western jewelry? Some western romance DVD? Some kind of cowboy boot item, not necessarily boots but something in the sdhape of boots. Gotta have horses in their somehow. A smoked food item?

Western Delights

Book are never to heavy to carry, ship or pack.  They are a must for every trip to the doctor, every vacation, or just to have on hand while sitting in the car waiting for your kids to finish soccer practice.

You can never have too many books.

Pat

For Your Basket

There are boot or horse shaped key rings and a bandana to line the basket would look good.  You could also put in a nightshirt with a cute cowboy saying or a picture of a horse on it.  I will think about it and maybe come up with something else.

Also agree that Just Maggie is an awesome book.  I find my copy and re read it every once in a while.

Elaine

Basket

You know I was going to say jerky of some sort too.  It's a big thing here...in northern Canuckland cowboy country!  And jewelry is a great idea!

What about books about the west?  When I was in Vegas last summer I grabbed one that was Romances of the West that was really cool...true love stories of real cowboys and outlaws.  :-)

And it looks like we'll be shelf-mates in August!  :-)

Basket

I like all the ideas.  If I'm not careful this basket will be huge.

See you in August.   Pat

Great Suggestions!

Y'all are making me want this basket. What great ideas. I have a friend here who makes baskets and candles up as a side business so I promised her any future giveaways I'll go through her. Candles and books are always a good thing in a basket along with trinkets and stuff like that.

I think it's awesome that you're donating to this charity.

I'm also so happy to see so many new faces in here and I encourage you to look around and jump feet first into some of the other discussions.

New subject

For those of you readers who have read my Texas Brotherhood series, I'm adding two more books for 2009.   With a surprise... I'm bringing back home the father who started all the conflict.

Jack Randell, ex-rodeo cowboy, womainizer, and cattle rustler, and father of 6 of my heros is coming home to Mustange Valley in my last installment book.

How do you feel about that?    Can I make a bad guy, good?  Or is that even possible?   We do love our bad boys, no matter what the age.

   Pat

Thank You

Pat, I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for joining us this week. I'll leave the thread up over the weekend so that anyone who's reading can continue to do so and that way you can respond as well. I also wanted to let everyone know that they can join some more Harlequin Romance Authors over here. That goes for you as well, Pat.

It's been an absolute pleasure getting to know more about you and your books this week.

I haven't read your series, but I plan on trying to get the older books because you've certainly picqued my interest. I love a series that comes full circle, as a reader, it gives me a chance to catch up with old 'friends'.

Making a bad guy good

This is very hard for me as a reader to accept that someone who has caused untold misery can become a good guy just by apologizing and being there.  There would have to be something extraordinary to make me think good things about him.

That said I am looking forward to the new books and seeing how you handle this.

Elaine

Thanks to everyone

It's been fun for me, too.  I enjoyed getting to know my readers.   Hope you all will also enjoy my upcoming books.  For any info you need, you can go to my website.

Thanks again, it's been a pleasure.  Pat Thayer
