Ladies Start Your Engines
Falling in love can be a blur...especially at 180 mph!
Author Abby Gaines gives us a trackside view of the racy new Harlequin miniseries and the inside track on her brand new NASCAR title, Fully Engaged!
About the author:
Abby Gaines wrote her first romance novel while still in her teens.Encouraged by her incredibly supportive parents, she wrote her novel longhand in school notebooks, supplying new pages daily to her biggest fan, her younger sister. When she'd finished, she typed up the manuscript and sent it to Mills & Boon in London—and was shocked when they rejected it. To this day, no trace remains of that original work.
After five years of submitting to Harlequin lines, Abby sold her first Superromance book—and soon after, she sold to Harlequin's NASCAR series.

Welcome, Abby!
I'm posting this now as I have a doctor's appointment first thing in the morning and am not sure what all this appointment is going to entail.
I used to live for Nascar almost as much as I do Football, and have recently decided to watch a race or two, much to the dismay of my Disney channel tv hogging children.
What made you decide to write for our Nascar series?
Rae
Hi Rae
...and thanks for the welcome!
Why did I want to write for Harlequin NASCAR...My great friend and critique partner Tessa Radley (who writes fab books for Silhouette Desire) read about the launch of the series and ordered me (she's like that!) to submit something.
I have a part-time job over summer as editor of a speedway magazine. It's open wheel racing, nothing like NASCAR, but the racing mindset is the same across all forms of motorsport. So I felt I could nail the emotional feel of a racing romance, even though I had to learn a lot of the technical stuff about NASCAR. Of course, I have since become a big fan!
The NASCAR world is so larger-than-life, it really lends itself to some great stories!
Abby
p.s. I'm going to try and post a new signature line that includes a link to this board. If it all goes horribly wrong, you'll see a bunch of gobbledy-gook at the end of this email...

You're welcome for the welcome.
That's very cool that you edit a speedway magazine. I remember when I lived in SC that the weekend pass time was to go watch races at their local speedway and we have one here in PA, but I haven't been to it in so long. I just to love the sounds of the engines and the unique smells. I've never been to a NASCAR race. Must put that on my to do list.
Tessa is a gem, I'm glad she bossed you into this.
Who are your favorite racers and was the hero of this book based on any professional racer? And was it hard to go from writing Supers to NASCAR?
As far as I can tell, your signature looks like it should. No gobbledy-gook.

Racing Favorites
I have to admit, I'm not one of those fans who sticks with one driver for years and years. But I'm in my second year as a Kasey Kahne fan, which for me is fairly long term! I got interested in Kasey because after I wrote my first Harlequin NASCAR book Back on Track, I noticed that Kasey's season had gone very much the same way my driver hero's season had.
But none of my characters are based on real NASCAR heroes. The hero of Fully Engaged, Gideon Taney, is the team owner, rather than a driver. I.e. he's the boss - I love bosses for heroes! :)

Superromance v. NASCAR
I forgot to answer your question about going from writing Supers to writing for Harlequin NASCAR...
I would say my stories for both lines have a lot in common. Same focus on family and community, similar sensuality level (though the NASCAR books are slightly sweeter than my Supers), and I go for the same light tone with an emotional underpinning across both series.

Hi Abby ~ I just received by copy fo Fully engaged! I hope to get to this series soon! I've really enjoyed your previous NASCAR books and look forward to many more. So, what's on the horizon for you???
Kate

I can see clearly now :)
Hi Kate, nice to see you! Re the horizon...actually, it's a lot clearer than it was a couple of months back!
I have another book coming out in this NASCAR series in August, but even more exciting to me personally, is that I'll be writing the stories of Chad and Zack Matheson, brothers of Trent Matheson from Back on Track, for the 2009 series.
Lots of readers emailed me to ask when those Matheson brothers would get their own stories, and I've been champing at the bit to write them!
I'm just finishing a book that is very loosely linked to Married by Mistake, one of my last year's Superromances, and it's been nice catching up with those characters again too.
My new Superromance this month, The Diaper Diaries, also has a sequel in the works.
Phew, that sounds like quite a lot on the horizon!
I hope you enjoy Fully Engaged. Although I said earlier that there are a lot of similarities between my Supers and my NASCAR stories, Fully Engaged is quite different from The Diaper Diaries...I'll be interested to hear which one people like best!

Note to Rae
Rae, I'm having trouble linking to this discussion from the Forums welcome page. It was working fine earlier today, but now the link doesn't work (the links to the other forums work okay though...).
I had to get to the board just now by going to your profile and clicking on your recent comments. Would you mind checking if the link isn't working, or if it's just me? :)
thanks

It might be because I moved the thread so more people could see it. I didn't build this one and it was stuffed into a folder and it isn't that I mind talking you, I wanted it to been by all of the members. You can always add this thread to your favorites and come to it like that.
You do sound like you have your hands full. I jut got done placing my order on here and I picked up the NASCAR and Supers book. I'll be stalking the mailman again.
I'll be back later on, I have a test today that I'm not looking forward too at the hospital.

Fully Engaged
Hi Abby,
The subplot in Fully Engaged was particularly intriguing, a love story between two - let's face it - disreputatable people...certainly to the hero and heroine. And yet I ended up loving these characters even though they weren't 'redeemed' in a traditional sense. Was it hard not to make them turn over a new leaf at the end instead of letting them carry on being wheelers and dealers?

I read Fully Engaged on the weekend - great book. I loved the way Sandra (and what a great name for a heroine) achieved her goals while staying true to herself. And I'm with Karina - liked the subplot too and thought it was cool that those two found each other while staying true to their own slightly devious selves.
Haven't read Diaper Diaries yet - looking forward to doing the comparison.
Staying true
Hi Sandra and Karina, thanks for stopping by!
I enjoyed writing the subplot in Fully Engaged (for those of you who haven't read the book, the subplot is a romance between the two "villains") - it was an interesting challenge to create a love story that was believable between two such disillusioned people, without softening them up so much that they couldn't fulfill their bad-guy roles in the rest of the story.
I think both of them did stay true to character. As a reader, it's important to me that characters stay true to themselves and their beliefs. Actually, the same goes for real life! :)
But falling in love with someone who has different views from you (which happens all the time in romance novels) sometimes means you need to compromise. Question is, what should you be prepared to compromise on, and what do you hold on to no matter what?

Villian romance
Hi, Abby. That's a really cool idea to have a romance between the two villians! I don't think I've ever seen that done.
It sounds like you've had and will have a busy year with all your releases! Congrats on all the books.

Villains
Hi Missy, the villain romance was fun to write, but I'll be interested to see how readers feel about it.
I'm looking forward to reading your book too - it's on my wishlist, but I'm wondering if I should wait and get it at the literacy signing in San Francisco if you're going to be there, so I can get a signed copy

Anxious
Now I'm really anxious to get my copy of Fully Engaged. This sounds wonderful. I like the fact that you stayed true to the characters, and your question about how far you're willing to compromise is a good one--not only for real relationships, but also in creating characters if you're a writer.
Rae
Hi Abby!!!
I love the cover of Fully Engaged! Your hero looks HOT! I must admit to being a big Nascar fan myself. Luckily I live in NC where it's short drive to several of the races. I love the excitement of being at the races surrounded by all the fans wearing their favorites shirts/jackets! Best of luck with your Nascar series! Sounds uber exciting!!

"Racy" Romance
Hello from the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers! I can't wait to begin reading your NASCAR series. My younger daughter is a big Kasey Kahne fan, to the point that we actually bought her and her husband a Kasey Kahne Crock Pot last Christmas -- and now she's dropped him for another driver (heart break!) -- don't know who yet -- but she only gets ONE racing Crock Pot, so she'll have to deal. She's a real girlie-girl, but they go to races and have a fantastic time, so who knew? I can see where such an exciting sport can spin off good romance plots. Do you talk to fans, or industry people, or drivers? Do you collect torn-from-the-headlines real events to spark a story idea for you? Are your characters based on real people?
Both Books
I have both the NASCAR and the Diaper Diaries in my TBR stack. I looked at the Diaper book last night but started another one. It might get moved up and then the NASCAR series.
I am a big Dale Jr fan and like several others also. I enjoy watching the races on TV but I do not think I could handle the crowds unless I could be in one of the suites. That will happen when I win the lotto.
Elaine
Hot heroes - real and fictional
Cynthia, I agree, I think my cover guy is pretty hot!
Eileen, I think the thing about Kasey is his eyes...very nice! (of course, he's also not bad at driving a race car...). Research is the fun part of writing a NASCAR romance. I have visited several tracks around the country, been to Charlotte to visit Roush Racing (I fell in love with Charlotte, BTW, what a lovely, vibrant, not-too-big-and-not-too-small city!), and went to a race at Daytona. Usually, though, I just watch the races on TV - to be honest, I think the view is better!
You're right, there's always a lot going on in NASCAR that sparks story ideas! I also find that if you thing of something that hasn't happened yet, it tends to happen the very next week...

Watching in Style
Elaine, I agree, it would be great to watch from one of the suites. I went into one of the suites at Texas Motor Speedway (not on race day, it was empty), and I could just imagine myself kicking back with a glass of wine to watch the race... Dreams are free!

How much car stuff?
One more question, Abby. How do you balance the technical info associated with car racing with the romance? And avoid info-dump? And do the NASCAR fans on this thread have a view on how much racetrack talk they want in a NASCAR romance?
Karina Bliss
tech talk
Karina, I try to only give technical info when it's important to the story, or when it adds tension to a scene. Otherwise, you're right, it ends up an info dump It can be nice to give that info in dialogue, but you need to be careful you don't have painfully obvious conversations like,
"Wow, Joe, you were going pretty fast out there"
"Yes, Susan, I hit one-ninety down the backstretch. But before NASCAR introduced restrictor plates to improve safety at the super-speedways, I would have been doing more than 200 miles an hour."
!!
The question about how much race talk readers like is a good one. It seems to vary, but if any race fans out there would like to say something about this, go ahead!

Hey
Hey Abby,
Reading "Fully Engaged" right now and am enjoying it. Had to take a break to feed my animals!!! I also read "Back On Track" and loved it.
Big Nascar fan here, grew up watching all forms of racing from Nascar Winston cup, to off shore racing and the NHRA. Have to fight for the TV on Sundays as how other people feel that "Circle track" is boring. Jamie McMurray fan here!!
It's interesting to see how the NASCAR series comes up with their information. What really intriques me is when the technical information is put in. Also grew up a tomboy with a father that was a mechinic for 15 years.
How difficult is if from the stand point of a writer trying to get that kind of information and that information right?
Any way, look forward to reading more of your books in the NASCAR series!!!
If you can't be good, be good at it!!!
getting it right
Hi Girl_28
Getting the technical stuff right is made a lot easier by the internet. Everything from car specs to pit notes to transcripts of in-car communications is online somewhere. The bigger problem is the amount of time you can spend reading this stuff - it's fascinating!
Glad you're enjoying the book.

Gidday!
Abbey, you're amazing, so knowledgable about a sport I have barely even heard of over here. I can just see Tessa bossing you to make the most of your enthusiasm and knowledge.
I have your Supers in my TBR pile since I'm not a huge fan of motorsport, but now you've fired me up. I can feel an SOS to Barbara's Books coming on.
Best of luck for your March releases, you make us proud!

Thanks, Jan, nice to see you here! Yeah, gotta love that Tessa Radley - a great writer as well as a great friend and kicker-in-the-pants!
The fun thing about writing NASCAR-themed stories is that when you have such a specific world, you can let your imagination run riot within that world...

Just finished it!!
Hey Abby!!
I just finished the book and I loved it!!
You're right the tech stuff is fascinating. I could sit here in front of the computer for as long as I could reading.
Glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks that stuff is. Course this is coming from a semi-motorhead!!! LOL
If you can't be good, be good at it!!!
Glad you liked it!
Hi Girl_28, so glad you liked the book! I'm just about to start writing one of the sequels to Back on Track, so time to get stuck into all that research again...
