Make Mine Supers! (3)

It's not just the size that makes a Superromance super. It's not even just the down deep plots or the characters with real conflicts and real, serious problems on their hands. Running the gamut from contemporary comedy to heart-rending family drama, what makes a Super so incredibly super is that we get six of them every month and we're the happiest campers on the planet because the satisfaction is that good! So if you've been "super-ed", pop on in and share the love!

First?!

Oh goody, I get to be the first to post on the new thread?!  Yay!Cool

Kay, Kim and Rae, hugs on the recent fractures and possible fractures.  Are we noticing a trend here?  They are all children of the male gender.  Back to that theory about boys being all impulse before they think!

Kay, I had to laugh at your story about the inciting prank resulting in the broken digit.  When DS #1 was in kindergarten, I had to talk to the teacher because he wouldn't go out on the playground since one child kept choking him at recess.  The teacher handled the problem and everything was fine.  Until years later, when DS fessed up that he had been mercilessly throwing sand in the other child's face.  Now, I obviously don't condone the choking.  But DS #1 is great about poking the sleeping bear.  Is that the right saying?  Anyway, I can totally relate to a lot you're going through, Kay.  And yes, there were times I was tempted to choke the child!  I attribute a lot of my gray hair to that kid.

Susan, I'm so glad you remembered the show!  I was having a senior, um middle age, um forgetful moment and couldn't for the life of me remember his name.  I could see his face plain as day, mutton chop sideburns and all, but all I could come up with was Captain...Captain...Captain Crunch, no that's not it.  Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green jeans.

I'm procrastinating and I better get back to writing if I ever intend to get that partial off to Toronto.  I've got Spring Fever something fierce.  And Holly, I'm in Arizona, hence the 80 degrees.  The Desert Dreams Conference will be here in a couple weeks... Hint, hint.

Topics

Geesh - you guys are hilarious!  I'm laughing uncontrollably over the stripper names.  Especially the Whimple and Dusty Monastery comment.

Anyway, last time a new thread posted I didn't know it, so this time around I noticed and I get to be, um, number 2.

Pet names

Hey guys-

Thanks for all the fun today - and with your help I've been able to name a few animals in my WIP. The heroine's a vet and I needed a few pet names to dash in here and there. Thanks to you guys I have a Honey Bun yorkshire terrier. Although I have to say, I really wanted to use Mr. Green Jeans. (Thanks Carrie!) Maybe I can work in a guinea pig later.

Word count done for the day - halfway done on the current WIP - yipeee.

Love you guys.

Tasha

Exhausted

I've thoroughly enjoyed the stripper names. (Jeannie, a sister act, really? Heh Heh. Innocent)

I spent the evening sprucing up my "online presence." Since I spend my days sprucing up the online presence of our IT department, I'm feeling a little burned out on the whole online sprucing thing. So many little details. (If anyone wants to take a poll about tiaras, I added a "Fun" page to my web site. This is how I spend my time...a little pathetic. Undecided)

My critique group is meeting this week. Since I haven't had a definitive answer on my proposals yet I'm pulling out a book I haven't looked at in a while. It's one of those "Did I really write that?" situations. Fun and kind of alarming.

I also finished piecing together the back of my son's quilt. I thought I'd have this thing done for him when he was 3. (He's 8 now.) Life. We had fun last night though. I pulled out my fabric scraps and he picked pieces of things he loves or that we've made for other people--curtains, a baby quilt, my quilt, his brother's quilt. It's a mishmash but full of good memories. Now just the basting and quilting and it's done. Maybe when he's 12!

Hope you're all well!

Wanted Man Superromance June '07

Hi All

Thanks everyone for the welcome back.

Kim, Kay and Rae sorry to hear about the injuries. It's always something isn't it?

Carrie congrats on being first!! Always good to be first off the rank. May it continue in other areas too.

Tasha, pet names, why is it so many people call their Jack Russells - Jack? And (over here) budgeriegars Bluey and Greeny. Like they can't think of something more original - sorry if I've offended someone LOL I had a poodle called Ziggy and now have a mini fox terrier called BoBo. Haven't had guinea pigs sorry!!

Sam - thanks for the hug, I'll take one, I need it!!! Kiss Great having the new car too!!!

Rhonda, no things not going smoothly at all really. There is shared care for the kiddielets. 7 day fortnight and still getting into routine having them here. Another court battle at the end of the month. Their mum has been so stressed about everything it's affecting her health and I just have to pitch in and help. Now that I have resolved that in my brain I am trying to remember all that early childhood stuff again. But it does come back to you.

My writing is within reach again. My depression is lifting and I think writing will ease me out of it. Give me something positive to look to. I just got so snowed under (excuse the pun) with all the goings on here. Time for me to take some time out.

I managed to plot out my next manuscript the other day. Boy, I now realize how much I have learnt since this time last year when I started seriously concentrating on my writing. V.Glad to have moved forward!! Embarassed

Hugs to all

Annie

New Digs

New digs...very cool!

Chelle, er, Babe, er Possum, I love them!

Oh, gee, Kim, I'm sorry about your son's collarbone!

Rae, Hugs!!

Same, The time change is killing me as well.  I haven't needed an alarm clock in years, but for a couple weeks after time changes, my internal clock's way off!

Ami, I like Morgan!

Amy, Punkin 33??  LOL  I loved American Idol last night.  Chakizi (sp. wrong, I'm sure) really surprised me!  And I'll confess, I've loved just about everything Brook's done.  Last night, no exception.

Kay, Hugs.  I'm so sorry he overheard you.  Wish I was closer, though.  I'd take you out for that drink.  Hugs.

Carrie, I'd love to be in Arizona.  I've heard good things about Desert Dreams, btw!  Alas, I'm in NYC in two weeks with Susan.  Uh, do you think the town's ready for both of us at once??!!  LOL  Of course, if you all hear about aliens landing in NY, you'll know Susan's sacrificing me up to them!

Ellen, That's a lot of sprucing...LOL  And congrats on finishing the quilt.  That's so cool.

Annie, Congrats on plotting out the next ms!  Moving forward is always the best direction!

Morning, Christyne, Marcie and Tasha!

More snow this morning, but just a bit.  Mainly I plan to just sit here and keep going on this story!

Carrie...I loved Captain

Carrie...I loved Captain Kangaroo!  Memories!

Dusty Monastery and Whimple Cedar...THIS I gotta see!!  Too funny!

Tasha...roof climbing DNA...didn't know they made that kind <g>.  Sounds like your vacation was VERY good to you...love the plot of your next "Manuscript"!

Kay...sorry about the cast, though kids tend to think they are cool...even if your DS did entice the other child, the bully shouldn't go unpunished as his deliberate actions hurt another child.

It's very uplifting to hear how your family has taken all of this trauma and turned it into a positive.  Middle school years are so hard on kids who don't have the perfect everything.  I watch it everyday...it's heart breaking...  Does he have a teacher you can enlist in your quest to build his self esteem?  Hugs and prayers...lots of prayers!

I couldn't agree more about kids tossing away their childhoods...so sad...and when they really are adults, they aren't able to handle the pressures because they were so busy being something else, they never laid a firm foundation...

Ami...loved my e-mail...I'm still grinning!

Chelle...I like Possum...go with that!

Annie...hugs and prayers for better days ahead!  Hugs especially for the children!

Amy...strippers could use the number 69, but not much else...<wink, wink>  ACC tournament starts tomorrow...the Madness has begun!!

Rae...hugs on the almost broken wrist...

Kim...hugs on the broken collarbone...LOL on the DD wrapping the big, bad policemen around her little finger...talk about DNA...

I'm with Carrie...I think boys have a predeliction for major danger!!  So far, no casts...so far...

Back to the dratted day job!  The kiddies have deadline next week, and they seem a long way from finished!  These are the books they wrote and illustrated...the stories are really cute, but the time involved is monumental!!  As long as we get our stuff to the publisher by the 26th, we'll have lovely hard bound books for our book signing!!

Ronda

Ellen—The bear afghan I

Ellen—The bear afghan I started for my son when he was 4 is still only 3/4s done and he will be 22 in November.  Now, I think if you try, you might be able to get done faster than I have.  I still have all the pieces and the directions and someday…the thing is, my kid will love it.  He’s just that goofy.

Carrie—I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed Mr. Green Jeans Fiesta.  Mr. Green Jeans was one of my early heroes, along with Mr. Moose.  I found Bunny Rabbit very annoying and wanted him to leave Mr. Moose alone.  And the Captain…how can you not love a guy in bangs?

Annie—Big hugs.  Pour your soul into your writing and know that we are all here thinking of you and hoping for good things!  Oh, and I didn’t name my Jack Russells Jack—probably because my dad is named Jack.

Kay—I found as a parent that I was able to preserve a lot of my child’s childhood by being a stricter parent than I wanted to be—but not so strict that they rebelled.  Fine and painful line at times.  Just be prepared for your kids to be mad at you.  In the end they appreciate it.  A strict parent is a great excuse for kids, as in, (with macho swagger) “Yeah, I’d like to do that but my parents will kick my *** if I do…”  Just prepare your kids for what they need to do when a peer calls them chicken.  Also, tell the kids exactly what you expect and start early.  Don’t say “I expect you to make good choices.”  Tell them the choice you expect them to make and why.  With smoking and such, I told my kids that a person has two choices when they start—continue to smoke or dope and spend a lot of $$$$, or quit, which is way hard.  Somehow kids understand $$$ more than future consequences, like cancer, since next week is so far away to them.  And then I flat out told them I expected them not to smoke.  I started this when they were in the fourth grade.  I did get my kids through high school without them drinking or smoking and they made friends with the other three kids who weren’t drinking, smoking or doping.  (Just kidding...kind of.)

Kim—A broken collarbone?  Hokey smokes—what is it with the juvenile male of the species.  And that hurts, too.

Ronda—Good luck getting the writing projects done.   We’re having achievement tests this week.  You know how that is.  Everything under lock and key, lots of paranoia.  Kids making designs with the bubbles instead of figuring out the answers.  Oy.

Waving to Holly and Susan and everyone else.  I know you're out there.

Jeannie

Oh, and I don't want to come

Oh, and I don't want to come off as a pompous parenting know-it-all.  All kids are different and I've been around enough to know that what worked for me won't necessarily work for everyone.  I'm throwing out what worked for me.  Some kids (that would be me as a child) have to learn everything the hard way.  I can remember thinking to myself, "Is doing this worth getting a spanking for?" and then deciding I'd chance it.  I was not an easy kid to raise--which is probably why I was so on top of my kids all the time.  I'd been there, done that, lol.  A strong willed child is going to try things and a parent is going to have special challenges.  (I'm happy to report that my mother and I are very close, in spite of the gray hair I gave her.)

A new thread!

And I didn't get an official stripper name! Waaaah!!! LOL

Thanks for the hugs, and the near drink, Holly. I'll take them all in the wonderful friendship in which they were offered. You guys are awesome. We've got quite a community thread here, no?

Vieve, very good advice. My parents were *very* strict, having not been strict enough with my older brother and sister. There were times when I thought I hated them, times when I used them as an excuse to do something I knew good and well would be a disaster like you said, and now that I'm older, thank God for them.

Carrie, lol on the sand. Yeah, let sleeping dogs lie. DS learned that one the hard way. He wants to fit in so badly and as one of the smaller built kids (not the smallest by a long shot, though he doesn't seem to appreciate that fact) he's taken a lot of teasing. It's just his luck that now that he's giving some of it back he gets slammed. Not that I condone that, either, but I think you know what I mean.

Okay, ladies... I'm blogging all over the place today and have a chat tonight. Please stop by. I don't think I can list the chat site since it's not Harlequin but for a list go to my website's Appearances page. I'd very much love to have the company. :)

Holy snapdragons

Geesh, I'm sooo observant. As in not really. Here I am checking the thread for new comments and I thought "Boy, it's been unusually quiet...." lo and behold...new thread!

So, today I am tackling my three-book proposal again. Time to get back on the horse. I finished a chapter last night for one of the ideas and now I have to wrestle the synopsis. *sigh* Does this EVER get easier? I'm guessing, NO. It feels much like homework. It's something that has to be done and so therefore, I have to stop complaining and get my butt in gear. WAAAHHHHH! I was never really good at homework, now that I think about it.Laughing

This and that

Annie, I hope your writing proves to be a sanctuary from some of the stressful stuff!  There are times when I'm relieved to lose myself in the fictional world I'm creating.  At least there I have the illusion of control.Wink

Jeannie, yes Captain Kangaroo was IT!  Way better than most of the children's shows they have today....

Tasha, the roof-hopping would have given me gray hair.  But I can totally see my sons doing the same thing at that age!

Holly, too bad you'll be going to NYC instead of sunny Arizona.  But I can see you and Susan taking the town by storm.  And I've heard wonderful things about the NINC conferences.

Ellen, what great memories you're creating in simply selecting the quilt fabrics with your son and reminiscing!  The completed quilt (whenever that happens to be) will be all the more precious!  I loved your stripping nuns comment, btw.  You crack me up.

Ronda, hopefully we're not scaring you with visions of male pranks to come.  I've found that two boys together often multiply the mischief exponentially.  They feed off of each other....

Well, gotta go write.  This week is full of doctor check ups and all the other healthy stuff I've put off.  Better now than when I add a day job to my schedule.

My April Supers came in the mail today and I'm really looking forward to reading them but I may have to draw names to decide which one to read first.  I really think I'll read Kim's "A Kiss to Remember" first.  And sometime I have to get the 20 books I read the week I was without a computer posted in the book challenge.Tongue out

Mr Green Jeans

Hello to everyone!! Smile

In high school I had a pair of green overalls.  Yes, I wore them.  Yes, I was made fun of.  Yes, I'm used to being made fun of.  It started when I was twelve (at least the one I remember).  I am still made fun of today for whatever quirkiness decides to make its appearance.  But anyway - I forgot all about Mr Moose!  Wow, such memories.  I used to watch Electric Company too.

I don't get the Supers in the mail anymore because my TBR pile threatened to topple over.  However, today with the 3 day sale going on, I ordered AKTR.  I have to read all the Emmitt's Mill books in order - even though you don't have to.  I just do.  I'm weird like that.  Excited for the series too.

Oh Kay - read your blog on another website about the Tulanes of Tennessee series.  Good info in that blog I must say.

Hope everyone has a nice evening.  Off to do some sit-ups and some leg lift thingies.

weird question

Why is the time wrong on my post?  It's an hour behind.  Is it because of daylight savings?

Checking in real fast to

Checking in real fast to say that agent Kristin Nelson blogged today about websites for unpublished authors.  (Search for pubrants if you don't have a link.)  She has some good points, including that you don't NEED a website if you're unpublished, but if you have one, it should look professional.  I thought it was timely after our earlier discussion.

Marcie--How cool that you're reading the Emmett's Mill series in order. You're right, you don't have to but it does give you a better feel for the town and its people. By the time you get to Nora (AKTR) you'll really understand her better. She's a bit abrasive if you're just meeting her but it's a funny book. At least I think it is. LOL...it could be that I have an odd sense of humor.

bones

Kim, hugs for DS with the broken collar bone. At age 5 DS fell off the top bunk bed when he woke up and broke his collar bone. He wasn't even doing anything except getting ready to descend the ladder!

Vieve

I've been reading about all

I've been reading about all the damage your assorted kids have done to themselves (broken bones, etc.) and thinking I was really a lucky girl.  I was a tomboy and never played with dolls if I could be outside playing football, baseball, etc. with the boys and all I got out of it was a dislocated knee.  Of course that still hurts at times even tho it didn't bother me at the time.

Hair-day

Morning, everyone!

Yes, Kay, it's a wonderful thread.  And the offers are sincere.  Hoping to see you at one conference or another to make good on it!

Kim, Good luck with the proposal.

Carrie, Susan and I always manage to have a good time.  LOL  We'll report back when we get home!

Have to go get my hair done today so it semi-behaves in NY.  I have thick hair.  Very thick hair that behaves in a rather Medusa-like way.  Whenever someone new does my hair comments are forthcoming.  LOL   And I'll confess, I hate taking the time. I know, some women love to be pampered.  I find sitting still that long difficult and...well, boring.  LOL

Hi! New here!

I met Kim last night at a chat, and she suggested I pop my head in.    Hi Kim <jodie waving wildly>!

I'm working on a manuscript that I've targeted to Supers, although I'm in word count jail right now.  I need to cut an obscene amout because it was completed with the higher word count, so what I thought was done isn't done.  I'll get it squared away, though!

 Are there any Supers chats?

Jodi...welcome!  Fasten your seatbelt...things move pretty fast around here!

Vieve...now you know why I'm stalling on the bunkbeds at our house!  I can already see DS#1 dragging DS#2 up the ladder...and dropping him off the bed...HORRORS!  DS#1 has been known to fall out of the bed in his sleep as it is...thank you, I'll pass for now!

Ellen, TOO...20 books in one week?!?!  OMG  You are my hero!  If I could get a month like that, I could clear off my TBR mountain!

Marcie...Love the green overalls!  I watched Electric Company, too!!  How fun are childhood memories!!  You have a great sense of self to ignore the teasing of others and march to the beat of your own drum!!  Or conga line...Wink

Ronda--You'll appreciate

Ronda--You'll appreciate this.  We're having achievement tests this week (so you know how it is) and as I'm reading the instructions the guidance counselor gave us, the very last one tells us what to do if we have to evacuate the school.  So I think to myself, "what at the chances?"  Pretty good apparently.  I spent over an hour standing on the football field with a bunch of crazed 7th and 8th graders, my laptop slung over my shoulder.  Someone hit a gas line across the street.  It happened mid-test.  I think yesterday was possibly one of the longest teaching days of my life.   Sure hope today's tests go better....

Hi Jodie!  Welcome.  So many of us hung out here prepubbed.  It's great to see a new face.

Happy Thursday

Hi, Jodie! Glad you found this site.

About "that"--Cherry Adair said in a lecture I attended that she once used the search and replace function to cut every "that" in a manuscript just before sending it to her agent. The agent got back to her immediately and said, "Ummm, Cherry? You want to take another look?"

Sorry not to have responded to the thousands of many messages recently. (Your poor boys!!! Why do they seem to have it so much harder than girls? Please don't be too hard on them!) Everything's going crazy here--I'm about to start editing our annual supplement in addition to my regular work, dh was just elected to the local volunteer fire dept. board (we're not quite sure which board), we're spending this whole weekend learning folk dancing (just when I could use the time, jeez), I'm helping a friend revise her history book, I just took on a new financial obligation so I have to completely redo my budget (meaning no book purchases for a while CryCryCry), we're about to have five houseguests for one or two weeks and, crikey, I am determined to finish this revision. It's a third of the way done and I only need a few more days, almost no time at all compared to the amount that's already been spent on the book. I desperately have to move on to the next story.

There, now, I feel much better after all that complaining.

On the bright side, my 18-year-old Volvo is getting almost 30 miles per gallon. And we're delighted to have moved to Texas--nobody ever told us it would be so lively here.

Misc.

Welcome, Jodie!  We're a friendly, chatty bunch.  Good luck on the nip and tuck with your manuscript.  You'd think the shorter word count would make for less work, but it usually makes more work for me.  I plot the story the same and then have to figure out what to cut.  And I'm really bad about overusing "that", too.  In Stephen King's On Writing, he indicates his second draft tends to be 10% shorter than the rough draft and I find that pretty much holds true for me.

Marcie, good for you for being yourself!  I'm sure you looked lovely in your green overalls!

Sally Jane, it's so good to see how well you've adjusted to Texas.  You sound so happy!  Busy, but happy.Wink

Jeannie, teens, an hour at loose ends -- shudder. Surprised

Sam, I hope you have a wonderful trip to Boston!  I've been missing your observations, too.

What is it with the March books?!  First someone (I apologize for not remembering who) said Wal Mart was allowing the Supers to languish in favor of more important books (snort).  Then I went to Target yesterday and they had the shelves tagged for March, but NO books.  I hate to think of Becca and Rick trapped in boxes in the back room!  No, don't send the men in white coats.  I don't really think my characters are stuffed in a box.  Sheesh, I better quit before you guys think I'm totally nuts!

Welcome Jodie

Hi Jodie--welcome to the boards. It is a fast moving conversation around here, but so friendly. Smile

I'm laughing at all the boy stories. My oldest is the opposite of impulsive. He threw one temper tantrum when he was 2 but he cleared a space on the floor and lay down carefully before he started screaming. He had double vision and limited peripheral vision which wasn't diagnosed until he was 7. I think that made him wary of moving too fast.

I took him last night to an introductory meeting for the "alternative" public middle school/high school. What a fascinating experience. He has to apply and then there's a very odd lottery/balanced selection process for 36 spots in 6th grade. We're on the fence about the right choice but he thinks he might put his name in the hat at least. Part of my worry is that the place is so alternative, it's almost like committing to a lifestyle not just an educational philosophy. Nice to have a choice, though.

Ellen Too--I live in fear that I'll fall behind on my challenge blog. If I read as much as you it would definitely have happened! Good luck catching up!! Smile

Revisions--I search for "little" "a bit" and "just." They're always good for a whole bunch of word count reduction. I also take every suggestion the grammar checker offers to change two words into a compound word. Hyphenating is another one of my tricks.

I do enjoy the revisions when it gets down to word choice. I love trying to find a better description to replace a few vague words. When I took Latin in high school I LOVED scanning the poetry--precision in language has always fascinated me.

Have fun everyone!

Hey girl! So glad you found your way to the Super thread! As I told you we are a lively bunch and we LOVE to chatter. So, yes, pull up a chair, grab a cup of cyber coffee (or tea if you're like me and hate coffee) and enjoy the chaos. Good luck with your word cutting.

I'm working from home today and of all days...the high school has a bomb threat!!! Geesh. I am the cop and fire reporter for crying out loud and I'm stuck at home today. Oh well. If I hear a big kaboom I'll know pretty quick that it was NOT a false alarm. Chances are though that this is a silly prank. Kids. *sigh* What happened to the ol' pull the fire alarm trick???

Oh, and I received a nasty lovely email this morning to kick off my day from a woman who threw away my book (RTEM) after 59 pages because I had used the Lord's name in vain. Hmm, did she think that Supers were the Inspirational line??? Kinda irritated me but oh well. So she wasn't the right reader for my book. She'd hate my next book. Nora is a mouthy one. LOL!Tongue out

KABOOM

"If I hear a big KABOOM"! Kim!!!

Hi, Carrie! Sure wish I was going to Desert Dreams this spring. But at least National is paid for. (Credit cards count, right?)

Yes, we love it here in TX. We did heaps of research and thought it'd be all right, but never expected to be so happy.

I could never figure out when Supers would be on the shelves. On the other hand, now I'm finding them in some supermarkets, which is very convenient (and destructive to grocery budgets).

Can you tell that $$ is on my mind? I should've been an accountant.

Kay, were you ever unpubbed? Tongue outTongue outTongue out Doesn't seem like it. That goes for a lot of you others, too.

Ellen, good luck on the "alternative" school. I don't know what I'd do about my kids' schooling these days if they were still little. When he was in second grade, ds started sleepwalking and breaking out like a teenager because his teacher gave him such a hard time. She didn't like that he'd gone to Montessori school. We finally found a private school for him (where dd also ended up) and all his symptoms went away immediately. Scary.

I "listen" to you all talk

I "listen" to you all talk about school and kids and think been there, done that and sympathize.  I always "loved" it when someone decided to call in a bomb threat or pulled the fire alarm and we got to walk across a busy street to take the kids to the football field to corral them there while we waited for someone to clear the school.  If I had ever caught a prankster I'd have been in jail for child abuse.  I remember the day when a male student came running into my class room (which was across from the boys bathroom) yelling there was a fire in the trash can.  Now the question was pull the fire alarm or take the fire extinguisher that was in my room and try to put it out.  I chose the fire extinguisher method and had it out in a minute.  I much prefered that to standing outside with the kids.  Fortunately the principal agreed.

Sally and a HUGE *sigh*

Sally, LOL I was most definitely unpubbed once! For many, many years actually <G> I've been very blessed in that once I finally broke down the door, um, got the call, I've been able to keep a momentum. But I'm also well aware that it could end at any moment.

My huge sigh? DS had his first day of ISS today--and he likes it. Why? He went to school, got his work done in his time, ate his lunch, and was left alone. Does that give an indication of what's going on or what? *double sigh* The pressure was off of him to try to fit in etc and he liked it. Can we say there's something wrong with the system?

my name is maureen...

and I'm an unpublished super-author" Lol (love 'super author") Welcome Jodie! Good to see you around here!
I had green courdoray (how do you spell that?) overalls that I wore after I had the girls (for that extra tummy comfort, lol) I could wear them to my job (they weren't THAT bad really, nervous giggle) but then people started humming the tune to 'green acres' and I stopped and got rid of them.

It's hard enough with my tomboy, I shudder to think if she had been a boy, she is like a replica of my DH in so many ways, (the notorious bad boy of school) that I can't imagine!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

You ladies ARE rather prolific...something like 20 new messages! Eek! Hope I can keep up!!

Slicing and dicing. Yeah.  I cut all the "that" words first. I'm amazed at how often I do it.I'm cognizant of it, and I *still* do it. You'd think I'd recognize it AS I'm writing, rather than after the fact!!

I don't have boys, but one active little girl.  I don't know if I could handle more than one kiddo!! I work full time, and we both take tae kwon do 3 or 4 times a week. It's hard to squeeze in the writing, but I've been doing well with keeping myself to a minimum of 30 minutes a day, just to keep in "tune."  I feel like if I stop for even a few days, I'll lose my groove. Tongue out  That muse of mine is hard to coax out once asleep.

Hi Jodie - This is a great

Hi Jodie - This is a great bunch of ladies.  I lurk here most days and post occasionally.  Lots of fun talk and I learn a lot.Laughing

Happy Thursday

Hi all

Welcome Jodie - we're always happy to have fresh blood. And I know what you meant about "that". I know I'm not supposed to use it, but it comes to the fingers so easily I don't even notice! I too am prepubblished (a.k.a. desperately hoping for that phone call!) and the gals here are extremely generous with their time and information on the biz.

Kim - A bomb threat?! Aren't schools crazy these days? the worst thing that used to happen at school back in the day was an outbreak of chicken pox. Although in my head, I'm using both the words 'bomb' and 'threat' in my mental message to your reader with the negative comments. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but what happened to the good ol' "if you can't say anything nice, bite your tongue!".? I loved RTEM and even now Nora's story is coming to my house via my hero in brown. (What can Brown do for you? Make me really, really happy.)

Carrie - I'm also anxiously awaiting your March release. Becca and Rick will be in good hands, I promise.

Kay - ISS. Sigh. Hopefully the shine will wear off by day three. When you get that drink, make it a double.

Sally Jane - Wow! You need a huge calendar to keep track of all your commitments. Maybe you need to have that drink with Kay. Congrats, though, on loving your new state and 30 mpg!

Jeannie - Those are the kind of thoughts that get me in trouble too. For example - "I'm sure the scissors will be okay if I leave them out for a minute", "Dogs don't like Rit dye", and "What are the odds I'll get pregnant now?"

Ellen too - 20 books? Awesome. I went on vacation and read a measley 9. And it sounds like you're a handy person to have in an emergency. Single handedly putting out fires!

Maureen - Green corduroys, really? I bet you sounded cool walking down the hallway.

Writer Ellen - I should have figured you'd take Latin. And what the he** is up with the Reaper? I am beginning to get the shakes without my Winchesters.

Good night supers.

Holly, take your laptop to the hairdresser :)

Welcome, Jodie!

Ronda, don’t be so sure. DS took up sky diving in his twenties!

Jeannie, pretty awful having to evacuate the school. Did you organize a fun football game? That would keep those juniors busy. When DH was still teaching high school and they evacuated without coats, he organized a running game... it was -10 F.

Kay, what’s wrong with the system is that it tries to squash all the kids in the same mold, and beware the one who doesn’t fit. Between home schooling and private schools, my kids finally found relief when they got to the university collegiate for 11th and 12th grades.

Today I went dancing, so I couldn’t post my ms to Toronto - awful liar! I procrastinate. I get cold feet. I look at it once more. Can I take another rejection? I know what you’ll all say. "Get that baby to the P.O." Okay, Monday I promise.

Vieve

Balm to my heart

Tasha-I might bundle you up and put you in my pocket. You are good for the battered ego. Laughing You know, my coworker and I wondered the same thing, What compelled this person to tell me how much she HATED my book? I never do that and I've read a few wall bangers. (You don't see me charging down Nic Sparks email door now do you??) I always puzzle on those things. What compels one person to sit down and spew venom or tear you down personally? Dunno. I guess because I don't do it, it's a foreign concept. But my coworker had a wicked smart (and funny) idea. He said I should put her in my next book as a character who is foul-mouthed as a proverbial sailor who has a scorching affair with a...priest!! ROFL! I thought that was quite a lovely sentiment, gave myself pause as I considered it. But alas, I just don't have any characters waiting in the wings that fit that description...yet. Cool

Well, that's it for now. I'd better start looking at part II of my languishing proposal. How do you eat a whale? Say it with me...ONE BITE AT A TIME. teehee..

Kim--I got the same letter

Kim--I got the same letter on one of my books and I wrote back, explaining to her the difference between characters' actions and real people's actions.  I never heard back, but I bet she doesn't bother to write to me again.  If she does, I will send her another lesson.

Good luck eating that whale.

Vieve--I love the idea of a running game at -10.  Smile

Jeannie

Interesting about the

Interesting about the letter.  I got one from someone who had thrown my book in the trash because of the language!  Now, seriously, this was on the book that Victoria so kindly had me edit out 90% of the swear words.  For the better, seriously.  So my people cuss sometimes.  *shrug*  Like you said, Kim, who has the time and negative energy to email me and tell me the book went in the trash?  I had to hold myself back from replying and letting her know I would still get the royalty from her purchase, whether she threw it away or made a shrine to it. *eg*

Kay, I'm so sorry to hear ds likes ISS.  That speaks volumes.  :(  Wish I knew what the solution was.  Are there any private schools nearby?

Ellen, tell me more about this "alternative" school.  What makes it so alternative?  I've never heard that term before.

Ronda, how goes the tournament?  I only saw part of one game today, but I have to confess that I'm never very interested in the Big 12 tournament.  I'm just ready for the big dance. :)  If we lose in the Big 12, I just reassure myself that it's more rest time and practice time for the important stuff.

Oh, belated welcome to Jodie!  Best of luck with your cutting project. :)

Home from critique

Every time I have critique this happens--I get home, the house is silent, and I'm wired. We had the nicest discussion about writing, not our writing, just writing. Love those ladies....

Tasha--April 3rd. Mark it on your calendar. I'm almost positive that's the day the Winchesters will be back. I do love hearing Sammy roll off those Latin verses--Father McGrath never looked that hot when we were declining our verbs. Wink

Kay--I hope things shape up soon. Sigh. And hugs.

Vieve--I think one last weekend with the manuscript is a lovely idea. But I expect to hear about a post office visit on Monday. If not, I'm sending Jeannie or one of these other teacher people to frown at you. Maybe Ellen Too--she's a take charge person. Be strong! Smile

Amy--the alternative school is a second public school option we're lucky to have in our community. It's "alternative" in lots of ways--longer periods for more in-depth study, options for how kids "show mastery" of subjects, democratic decision-making that includes the students, exemption from standardized testing, no letter grades, etc. It's an attractive option but my son would give up some social network stuff if he goes. No guarantee he'll get in anyway--they take 36 kids out of about 200 that apply.

Ithaca is (in my opinion) a cool place because the private school choices are very limited. That means almost everyone is in the public schools together. I think that strengthens the district, but if you want a choice, you're in a bit of a bind.

Happy Friday!
