Extra! Extra! Special
Sophisticated, substantial and packed with emotion, Special Edition demands writers eager to probe characters deeply, to explore issues that heighten the drama of living and loving, to create compelling romantic plots. Whether the sensuality is sizzling or subtle, whether the plot is wildly innovative or satisfyingly traditional, the novel's emotional vividness, its depth and dimension, should clearly label it a very special contemporary romance. Subplots are welcome, but must further or parallel the developing romantic relationship in a meaningful way.

Cool!
It'll only take me about a year to figure this all out.
But I can already tell it's going to be a lot more user friendly with all the additions and options.
How's everyone doing on their latest, greatest SSEs?

So Sorry, Ami
I deleted old posts that were just tests and accidentally erased your post and there's no way to get it back.
Hi, Cindy! Yes, this is most definitely going to take some getting used too. I think some of the features on here are pretty cool though and I made sure I brought this thread over here. Now to jump back into the discussions on here and get this place hopping again.
Rae, who is always open to suggestions.
LOL! It's okay, Rae!
I was just gushing over Karen's books. (insert smiley face here if I could find the darn things! They are not on my screen.) So I'll try agian! Karen--I loved Yours, Mine...or Ours! I love how we feel like we're right there in their heads and how authentically they respond to each other and their situations. What's the next book?
Ami
Thanks, Ami!
Ohmigosh -- a new computer (Rae -- Santa DID bring me one, via three of my kids, *total* surprise!), new boards and deadline dementia is a wicked scary combination!
But I can already tell I'm going to love the new boards once I figure them out. And the computer. Maybe even the book.
Ami -- thanks so much! Violet and Rudy were so much fun to write, so I'm delighted that readers are loving them, too. Next up is Kevin's story, BABY, I'M YOURS, out in stores in April but available on eHar Mar. 1.

I'm so glad you got a new computer, you deserved one!
I finally got a chance to read Yours, Mine and...Ours? and OMG, you made me cry again. Loved Rudy and Violet. Loved Stacey and the boys. Adored that you set it in NH and loved that you dedicated it to Miss Shannon. I could hear her voice in Violet's. I guess I could tell her that as well. '-)
I cannot wait for Kevin's story. Seriously, is it March yet?
Ha! Found ya!

Now if I can just get my colors to work and my picture to show up. I know you probably already saw my posts about this Rae, so any help is appreciated! When I click on the color paletete icon the 'comment preview' button blinks.
It's gonna take a while to get used to everything here, but I think (once I have my forgotten-at-home reading glasses again) it will be a lot of fun!
(For whoever it was that couldn't find the smileys) If you click on 'add new comment' at the top of the posts you'll be able to add emoticons. If you just do a 'reply' in someone else's post I don't think you can. Also, everyone, don't forget to add to favorites at the top of the posts. It's MUCH easier to get back here if you do.

Ladies,
You're asking the wrong person--lol. Seriously, I'm techno challenged and learn by trial and error. If any of you are familiar with Wordpress, this is very similar to it in that you can use the html box to format things.
And I could never forget about my SSE thread. I didn't want to start discussions until we were over here because I didn't want them to get lost once the shiny and new boards opened up. I figured I'd give the newness the rest of the week and then we can decide what we want to start talking about in the new year. Sound good?

Hi RaeAnne
What a lovely thing to say about my book, Ami. I'm so glad you enjoyed it (and I'm secretly glad you cried because I bawled like a baby when I was writing it and I hate to be the only one. LOL!). Yes, the last one is Anna's story, which I should be wrapping up in the next week or so. How's everyone doing? I was really busy over the holidays, but now that things have slowed down, I'm back to working on my new ms--sixty pages done!
Exciting news--I finished first runner-up in the Conflict of Interest contest! See my pic over on the Writing Challenges page. Thanks for letting me know Lisa. Sometimes you have to wonder if the computer gremlins have attacked.
My writing is going pretty well today. I've done a chapter crit for one CP and started another chapter for another CP. Soon I have to go run dd around for the afternoon and then it will be time to make dinner when I get home. Grrr....

Re-Write?
The more I think about it, the more I think I should just scrap the wip and start all over. The motivation is there, the chars are wonderful, the emotion is real-ish for a rough draft- but when I ask myself where this couple is going I get a big fat BLANK. So, I'm seriously thinking, or realizing, that something's wrong with a) the story line, b) the plot, c) my execution of it all. Also, I don't really know where this one is targeted. With SSE, HAR, or HR. So, I'm just thinking... New beginning time! Any suggestions?

Lisa, have you considered
Lisa, have you considered plotting out your story before you trash it. I initially thought of myself as a panster but I would end up finding myself in your position a few times and didn't like it. This last ms I completed, but a well established author in a few sentences told me what was wrong with it. I had to rewrite the whole thing and the first thing I did was rework the synopsis. It took a few days of sending the synopsis back and forth between me and my CP who asked very pointed questions. Most of which consisted of 'Why?' Questions that took a lot of work to answer but I ended up with a very strong synopsis. So when it came time to do the rewrite, I used the synopsis as a roadmap. I was able to mark which scenes were already written and needed moved around, which I needed to dump, and which scenes needed to be written from scratch. A couple times I almost went off on a tangent and I hestitated because it just didn't feel right so I glanced at my synopsis and I was back on track. I did that complete rewrite in about two weeks. I was so proud of myself. So this time around I'm doing the synopsis first and then the ms. I've been doing research and brainstorming for a week now. I can't wait to start writing it.
Don't know if this will help you but I thought I'd share what I learned the hard way. If you love your characters, I'm sure you'll find a way to rework the story.
Small towns...big romances

Lisa, I'm afraid I would
Lisa, I'm afraid I would agree with Jennifer, that maybe you should plot your story before throwing away a partial ms that sounds like it has great potential. It truly does sound as simple as figuring out first what their goals are and going from there.
There are many craft books that can give you ideas on how to go about realizing your story before writing (or continuing to write). Of course, the obvious way is to write a synopsis, but you could also storyboard, use Debra Dixon's GMC method, etc. And the good thing is you can do one or all of these things, whatever you need to do to understand your story.
My method is to start with a synopsis, then as I go deep into the story, begin with the storyboard. I finish my synopsis, but don't always flesh out my stroyboard, simply because it is an aid to my synopsis and I don't need it filled out to know what scene needs to be next.
Without the synopsis, my biggest weaknesses shined through. They are conflict and motivation. Yours might only be conflict, but using a method to realize your stroy will help aliviate any problems you might have.
If you move onto another story now, you might find yourself in the same boat with the new one. It truly is better to stop writing and figure out what your writing process should be to be able to write the best book possible.
This is all my HO, but I hope I've been able to help you!
Cindy T.
Lisa, I forgot to also say
Lisa, I forgot to also say don't worry about what line your ms fits. Your story will tell you where it fits. There are many authors who write for more than just line for the sole reason that their stories won't ever neatly fit into one series. I seem to ONLY be able to write SEs, and sometimes I wish that weren't the case, but when I first started, I wrote and didn't even think about the line until long after it was finished. I know you've got opportunities in different lines (can I say I envy you that?
) but don't tie yourself down to making a decision before you've finished the book. That could also be a problem you're having--that you're trying to make it fit one line when it is suited better for another. And before you think there aren't that many differences between the lines, oh, there so are.
Best of luck to you. I know this is a sucky place to be, but with your tenacity you'll get through it in no time.
Cindy T.
Lisa
Although you've been given great advice about how to fix your ms, there's something I'd like to point out.
A few years ago I went through a phase where I felt everything I wrote just sucked. I'd be all excited about an idea, start writing it, then hate everything I wrote. I'd try to fix it, then ultimately end up scraping it and starting all over. This went on and on and on for months.
I finally fix the problem by waiting until I further into the story before I went back. I've found that if I stop to edit after only a few chapters I would end up deciding what I had wasn't worth saving. But if I was six, seven chapters in, I wouldn't as tempted to scrap it. I'd have more invested in the story.
I don't know if this even applies. You may be farther in your story, but if you start over you run the risk of getting into that habit every time a storyline gives you trouble. And let's face it, what first draft doesn't suck?
Hope this helps.
Sandy
So right on
Jennifer, Cindy and Sandy you are all so right on about it. I'm only in to this one at ch 4 and I've reworked the beginning twice so far. Once on the advice of a cp and once on my own. I absolutley love the chars and want to see them HEA, but I don't know where they are coming from, or going. Yes I'm a pantster of sorts, but I'm thinking its mostly due to laziness of process! Lol I hate character sheets, scene sheets, story-boarding, timelining and syns! Hate them! So I just write and rewrite. Hmmm seeing a negative patern here. What worked for the first ms (totally a pantster job except for a necessary timeline) is CLEARLY NOT working with this one. I also don't want to 'scrap' the whole story, just find a better place to start to help the pacing smooth out. Like instead of six months preggers, she might work out better at 2-3 months, or something like that.
Then again, I may just need to do a little more character soul searching and plotting. I'm not so worried about where it might or might not fit though. I just know my style doesn't fit Desire like I'd originally thought with the other ms so I need to make sure to keep ingedients for these three genres tight and not sway to mix others in too much and end up with a too-sexy-no-sex-too-gentle-too-alpha mess. lol Because I do know the lines are v different. But I'm far from dumping the whole wip still. I just love these two too much and I want to tell their story.
Thanks for the insight and suggestions. You gals are great!

Lisa, I feel you pain. I
Lisa, I feel you pain. I floundered from one method to another, all of which I hated as well, because I was a pantster. And I also considered myself a wee bit lazy because I didn't want to do the synopsis and other things. But now I don't see it as laziness, I see it as being overwhelmed with all the different methods, everyone telling me something differenent, and that it's the ONLY way to make your story work perfect. Now I see the limitations I put on my writer were all bogus. I needed to remember that what works for one person (and that is including my advice to you
) may not work for anyone else. You're not lazy you just don't know where to start, and the thought of working your way trough all the techniques until you find what clicks for you is daunting.
I wish I could tell you it was easy to know what method worked for me, but it wasn't. I happened on storyboarding long after I knew the benefits of a suckopsis. I hated them so much. Now it's still a love/hate relationship. But the storyboarding helped me visualize, which naturally helped me understand where the story was going. In other words, I fell into my method.
As for this story, do whatever feels right right now, even if that's to stop working on it altogther. You have to allow yourself time to get in tune with your writing process. For me, and I'm sure for most, it didn't happen overnight. But when it happens, you will see a definate improvement in your structure and in your progress from unpublished to publshed author. I say this now as an unpublished author knowing full well I will become published because I've found my method--not so much arrogant as determined beyond all measure.
Cindy T.
GREAT DISCUSSION!
Lisa, thanks so much for starting it!
Cindy, this was great to read. You'd think after a decade I'd have my method down, but no. I keep looking for something new to add to see if maybe I can finally find the way that works for me.
I know I pantz the first three chapters, then stop and plot the book, then go back, revise the beginning until I feel this strange connection I can't explain the write the rest of the rough draft without really revising at all. Then I start layering.
Then I query it, send it in if it's requested and, at least so far, get the rejection.
I do story boards or character sheets or outlines or a million other things from time to time but none of it is an always.
I did add a new step to the last two requests out right now. I let them sit for two weeks without even looking at them. Then I went back and read them again and made changes if I felt they were necessary. I love the books and hope they find a home.
Good luck finding your process, Lisa and enjoy your time with these new characters you love.

Stuffage
Great discussion. It always makes me happy to see that I'm not the only one who struggles with stuff. Over in the Supers thread, Betty said about deleting an entire manuscript. I can't do that. Sometimes there's a nugget or two or three in there that I can use elsewhere and so I tend to save them on cds and my disc drives for just in case, plus sometimes it's a nice reminder of how much I've grown over the years.
Good luck, Sandy. You can do it. I have faith.

Ain't Technology Great?
Sandy, I want to say that Mercury is in retrograde now, hence the printer being broken. Seriously, Mercury can be a bugger when it comes to these types of things or so I'm told.
Here's hoping you can get a new one sooner than later and get that m/ss sent out asap. My guy bought me an all-in-one for Christmas and I don't know how we managed this long without it.
Rae
One more thing . . .
Thanks for the heads up, Rae :)
I'm having a bit of a problem. My last tweak of my ms turned into more than just a tweak. The more I looked the more things I found wrong <sigh>. After stalling out for three days on chap 6, trying to rewrite a scene that I ended up putting it back to the way I orginally had it (don't ask why, long story) I finally just said, That's it! I'm done. Whatever happens, happens.
I should be getting a printer tomorrow, and I'm not even sure if I'm going to attempt a final proofread because I know I will find things that I hate, that I just have to change, and I'll be at this FOREVER. Well, okay, I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean.
Basically what I'm ranting about is have any of you ever felt like you're doing more harm to a ms than good by continually editing it? I just loved the way my last ms turned out and I'm not nearly as satisfied with this one, but I'm starting to think this one is about as good as its going to get. Well without additional input from someone more in the know.
So to edit or to not edit?
Sandy
Sandy
Yes! Step away from the manuscript and wait for the printer, print it out and send it in asap. Rae
