Love: Historical Style ~2~
Do you love historical romance? Are you one of the ones who has learned more about history through romance than you ever did in school? Maybe you'd like to join us in the drawing room filled with our various heros - rakes, cowboys and warriors all in skin tight breeches and discuss your favorite characters with the authors who created them or maybe you'd like to talk about research for your own potential story idea--or both! Whatever brought you here, we're glad you came. Sit down, make yourself comfortable and stay awhile, but be mindful of our Warrior's swords--they're sharp!

Lovely shiny and sparkly
It is great to get an new thread, Rae.
Hopefully we can discuss the historical line and all the exciting things planned. I know there are a couple new authors to look out for in 2009. Joanne Grant is going to be doing a list of new authors from London imprints on the UK editors thread soon. And I believe the Undone e-books have done well. Certainly they are now available on the M&B website.

Thought I'd lost my way for a minute there! I think my computer is playing up again, it is being very SLOOW. A bit like my writing at the moment. It must be the cold. One of those pirate stories set in warmer climes might be just the thing...

Yesterday, the boards went down for a bit, and I noticed that they were loading slow right before the crash. Hopefully that was it and not your computer, Carol.
Tis very cold here and supposed to get colder. More snow as well. Thinking a nice hot location with an equally hot Pirate might just do the trick.
I'm looking forward to meeting new authors! I so hope they stop in over here and introduce themselves. I'm also looking forward too and trying to think of new ways to generate conversation in here. I have some ideas planned.
Have a great day everyone and glad the bread crumbs led you straight to here.

Hey Rae
We should talk sometime and maybe we can get something going between here and the MySpace page.
And to all my favorite HH authors, you do know to let me know when you are guest blogging somewhere so I can spread the word, right? I would also like to start doing more character interviews, regular interviews and some guest blogging on either the MySpace page or Facebook. I need help spreading the word about the facebook page since I can't go searching for fans, they have to find me. I would also love it if you could send me pictures of you or an author friend at their booksignings or other promotional get togethers. I know I love seeing your picture of you hard at work in the real world. I think it would be fun to set up a photo album of "authors at work" for my friends and fans to comment on.
Yummy pirates can always warm me up on a chilly winter night and I sure need that warming up. Negative temps are getting old real fast and I could use a few days that I didn't have to shovel!

So, here's a conversation topic, in light of the new Undone! line that was launched. What sort of hero would you love to snuggle up with for an ultimate fantasy getaway?
Some of my favorites:
Rescued by a sexy knight
Trapped during a storm/natural disaster with a really hunky man...any time period will do...
Swept away by an outlaw, ala Robin Hood.

I am pleased you like my Viking. Vikings have a certain something. HOpefully you will be doing more of your Irish Vikings.
Ultimate fantasy getaway -- I adore the Beauty and Beat scenario -- any time period.
I love the whole Robinson Crusoe thing -- stranded on an island with a sexy pirate. Okay stranded anywhere with a formerly impossible but sexy hunk.
I do like the whole bad boy v prim and proper bluestocking as well.
Basically, I just like escaping into a good book.

Hi Michelle(s)!
I love the idea of a slightly prim heroine - any era - finding she cannot resist the forbidden hero. He can be a medieval knight, a Viking pirate, or a regency rake, but he has to have that special something that will force the heroine waaaay out of her comfort zone and into his arms...

And speaking of which, does anyone know whether the practice of mail-order brides ever made it over to the British Isles? I know it did exist in the 19th century, particularly when settling the American frontier. I wondered if there were any instances of it in England? Yesterday I was searching the London Times archives, trying to find a snippet, but mostly I found advertisements for patent medicines (shudder).

mail order brides and the UK
Michelle W --
You mean within the UK/Ireland? Or do you mean being sent out to the colonies? I know mail order brides were sent out to the colonies. Deb Hale wrote The Bride Ship about English brides being sent to Canada. And women were regularly sent out to India, Australia, NZ etc to find husbands. But within the UK, because there was not a huge imbalance of eligible males to females (rather the reverse), it did not happen as often. The ton and various regional activities (Edinburgh,Newcastle,LIverpool and Mancester all had thriving Assemblies for example) ensured that there was a known marriage market...plus there was an informal network...You did have the custom of men taking their wives to market with a rope around their neck and selling them. Hardy got the idea from an actual case...but these tended to be working class/farm labourer types.
Hope this helps.

governesses
Michelle W --
If within the Uk, have you thought about a governess instead? Such things were often done through advertisements and agencies. The Governess Agency was a huge clearing house. Sometimes people would go to London/one of hte regional cnetres and hire (think the Turn of the Screw) or they would have a relative do the hiring for them, Governesses become much important after the 1830's financial crisises and move towards being more exclusive. There is a reason why Jane Eyre was written in 1847.

Thanks, Michelle S. I had a feeling that it wasn't common in Scotland/England, etc. the way it might have been in areas where women were scarce. I have a heroine that I'm brainstorming right now, a Regency era story, where the girl loses the man she wants and goes off to do something desperate...like marry another man. She needs to marry for money for her family's sake, and I wondered if that could have happened in England. Not to say that I couldn't work my way around it. I'm just trying to think of possibilities...just thinking out loud, you know?

You just need to find a compelling reason why she would accept an arranged marriage. She might not know the man very well. Or he might be a friend of a friend. It is just the motivation you need to get right, but certainly Marriage of Convienence did happen.
An Impulsive Debutante is a King Thrushbeard premise for example.

Then...
...afterward, she and her husband can fall in love. Quite often in the Regency, people married more for position than for love. The challenge is to have the H & h fall in love and be married to each other rather than caught up in an endless string of affaires. Good luck with that, Michelle!

The sexiest man in period costume
Nicola Cornick as a response to the RNA's sexiest animal on two legs (winner Richard Armitage, mainly for his period roles) asked the question on her blog, but I think it is something that could be discussed here.
Who is the sexiest man in period costume?
Colin Firth in P&P?
James Purefoy in Brummell or Rome?
Sean Bean in Sharpe?
Gerald Butler?
Maybe Jamie Bamber in Hornblower...(this is a sop to my cp,Donna who think he simply is)

Me Not him, someone like him as everyone will be thinking about him. And it doesn't matter who I had in mind.

My problem is that I tend to be able to name sexy actors playing period roles, more than I can name them playing contemporary roles.

historical romances
As a child I read everything I could get my hands on, and can remember being a pre-teen and devouring Jean Plaidy's historical fiction. From there, it wasn't much of a jump for me to start reading historical romances as an adult. They are currently my favorite type of book to read, and every month as soon as the new releases are out, I head right for the Harlequin Historicals to check them out, and usually buy most of them. I seem to have a passion for those set in the UK though, and bypass most of the Westerns and the Europeans, though the ones I have read haven't disappointed.
Currently, my favorite Heroes are the Norse men from Kat Martin's 'heart' series. But you also have to love all those Rakes and Corinthian's. Got the latest Nicola Cornick on my ebook reader just calling to me, and just waiting for some of Michelle's books to get published by Harlequin (or will bite the bullet and buy from Mills & Boon in pounds (ouch!))

Scots
Oh yes - gotta love those wild Scotsmen too. But how far removed are they from their Viking forebearers?
Personally, there are times when after reading Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books, that I look at my red-headed husband, whose of Scottish descent, and wish he looked more like Jamie! (I get a kick out of it too - Jamie is James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser - my husband is Alexander James - and his mother was a MacKenzie). Maybe its a good thing that the DH doesn't read anything other than magazines, even though there's several novels in the bathroom, including a Gabaldon

Harlequin
Lynne --
Slightly confused. Both Michelle W and some of my books have been published by Harlequin. Both my Vikings for example remain available through the ebooks. Joanna Fulford's debut is also a Viking. Vikings appear to be popular.
The pound has sunk against the dollar. It is now about 1.45 dollars to the pound. Totally different to a few months ago when it was 2 dollars to the pound. And you do not want to hear about the pound to the euro.
I should probably try the Outlander series again. But the first one had me muttering under my breath as I live in Northumberland and know about some of the border lands. It was more likely me than anything else.
Hugh Jackman is a good choice. Has anyone seen Australia? I know Cheryl St John loved him in it.

Robin Hood
Kevin Cosner was very sexy in his roles prior to Robin Hood (there was one about a road trip to Mexico and of course the Susan Saradon baseball one), but he did nothing for that particular role.
Daniel Craig had a small role in Elizabeth so I can't judge with him. APparently Colin Farrell was totally unsexy in Alexander, but I have not bothered watching...

Troy! I love that movie!
Brad Pitt had a double for his legs?? That is funny. I remember watching the movie and thinking, who knew Brad Pitt was built like that? And yes, Eric Bana played Hector in the movie. I think he made the movie and was very upset when he died (even though I knew he was going to die, but still). I thought Orlando Bloom came off as a whiny coward in it.
I really liked Clive Owen and Ioan Gruffudd in King Arthur-perhaps Ioan Gruffudd more than Clive Owen. I also liked Ray Stevenson in that movie and Rome on HBO.
I know you ladies aren't
I know you ladies aren't western fans, but I loved the movie 3:10 to Yuma and the wonderful portrayals by Russel Crowe and Christain Bale in them. I think Russel Crowe was wonderful in it and was half in love with his character by the end.
I really want to see Australia. My dd and I watched the episode of Oprah about it and it looked like such a terrific movie (especially the scene where Hugh Jackman dumped the bucket of water over his head-grroowl).
clarifying
Michelle S - I'm anxiously awaiting Impulsive Debutante to be out by Harlequin. You mentioned it when I did a review on A Christmas Wedding Wager. And I love related / series stories. But now I'll also have to buy your Viking stories the next time I'm on line buying books. Maybe when the next coupon code comes out!
As far as the Outlander books - maybe skip the first two and jump to the ones not set in Scotland or the Borders, if that irked you? I actually got bogged down in Breath of Snow and Ashes because of the amount of American History, but WILL finish it because I do enjoy the characters.
I'm a Canadian, and the Cdn dollar to the USD/Pound/Euro is NOT nice, particularly compared to last summer when the Cdn dollar was at par with the USD.
Michelle W - I've got your Viking/Undone story in my electronic TBR pile. Will be reading it soon I'm sure, as those Undones are great!
My favorite time line is the Regency romances, but for pure macho male, give me the Vikings! But with you ladies comparing the actors, I'm just lost. Would rather read than watch a movie, and except for Mel Gibson (did love Braveheart), don't know one actor from another.
Lynne
AID
Lynne -- I don't know when AID will be out in NA. When I go down to London next month I will ask my editor. However, all M&B books are available through Amazon Canada. So this includes An Impulsive Debutante. When the BBC did their Consuming Passions programme, the cover for AID appeared in the title sequence. I squealled. HOpefully it will be shown on BBC America as part of the 60th anniversary Harlequin.
Terry -- I do like Westerns. I grew up in California and we had a cabin up in the Sierra Nevadas near to Angels Camp. The reruns of Maverick were a must watch during my teenage years. I spent my honeymoon on a dude ranch in Calgary where Marilyn Monroe stayed when she filmed River of No Return.
One of the great things about M&B over here is that they do one western per month.
But I have not seen 3:10 to Yuma yet. Christain Bale is yummy. Once upon a time Clint Eastwood was wonderful. Paint Your Wagon, Rawhide,..I can happily talk cowboy. I just don't write them as my home market is the UK.

Please come play! Authors, send your fans! It should be pretty easy this month. At any rate, come over and have some fun! Next month will probably be harder! You might like the practice. Michelle S, you have to
Michelle S, you have to watch 3:10 to Yuma, it is simply one of the best westerns I have seen in a LONG time. If you saw the first version, forget about it. This one is nothing like it.
A honeymoon on a dude ranch sounds like my kind of thing, you lucky duck!
3:10 to Yuma
I will put it on my list to rent Terry. As I said -- I like Westerns. One problem I do have with the modern Western is the elvel of violence/angstsy depression. Often they do not seem to be having fun. Also the level of corruption. You know the New Mexico Billy the Kid type stories. Or maybe these are just the movies that my dh likes...
My favourites Western romances tend to be school marm v gambler, and mail order brides. Or possibly crusading newspaper reporter...

MIchelle, the schoolmarm vs bad boy is the theme of my western I submitted HH! Yay, I'm glad to see someone else who likes these types of story lines. My wip is sheriff vs. an impulsive dreamer, a lady who jumps before she looks and usually ends up regretting it.
