Thanks for the congrats, guys!  Donna, can you post the link to Love Romances?  I seem to have lost mine.

Aurelene, I usually read in the bath.  i used to read for hours into the night once I'd gone to bed, but these days I find I need the sleep!

Travelling is great for reading, too.  Planes, trains, i need a book!

Love Romances

Liz - it's here:  http://pub12.bravenet.com/vote/vote.php?usernum=989396686&cpv=2

Personally I'm just thrilled with all the good news for the line lately.  Awards "season" is just beginning so hopefully there will be more good news to post for lots of our authors.

I usually read in one of two places.  My husband is an online gamer and plays with his brothers and dad many evenings.  So unless there's something in particular I want to watch (I don't watch much tv), you can find me on the futon in the office reading...even though we're doing different things, it's kind of companionable.

And if it's a cold night I might turn on the fireplace and be next door in the family room.  Our leather couch reclines so I kick my feet up with a glass of wine and a book.  :-)

I am watching less and less tv it seems.  Right now I'm down to NCIS and Life.  2 hours a week, and that's it, now that Battlestar is over.  But I check the listings because sometimes a good movie or documentary comes on that tickles my fancy, and I'll make a point of watching.  I usually check out Masterpiece Theatre, but lately I've been underwhelmed.   Oh and I have been youtubing episodes of Law and Order UK.  I might even buy the season when it comes out on dvd, as I can play multiregion on my computer (I learned that when I got Hearts and Bones).

I found You!

Congrats to the Rita finalists!

Welcome the new author! (Still have to make it over to vote now there's a link. Thanks for that, Donna)

Too much to remember from the old room, so I'll just say I haven't watched much tv since I got roped into the Twilight series in January and it got my writing juices stirred up again. I like to read in the living room while dh watches tv, but he's hard of hearing and I can't take the loudness very long, si I end up in the tub, bed, or office to read. Outside, on the porch when it's nice out.

I love NCIS and all the CSI shows, NY-Gary Sinise! YUMM Also, daytime court shows are interesting, but those can eat a whole day without my realizing it's already 6 pm and nothing accomplished! I watch The Seeker on Saturday if I'm not writing when it comes on (and sometimes I'll leave writing to watch it). Sundays I try to remember The Unit and Cold Case (in reverse order) and Mondays used to be The Medium, but I think its moved to Thurs and I forget its on, and House. Friday used to be Ghost Whisperer, but I keep forgetting because it's the beginning of the weekend and I don't have the dgd to watch so I write, write, write from then to Monday, as much as I can cram in, since dh works those nights and sleeps days then.

So, now you all know my boring life! Lol

I didn't write hardly any today though. After staying up til 3 am for the past two nights and rising before 10 am both days, I rested, visited with youngest dd, who brought the new baby- 1.5 wks old already- for her first visit, and then took a nap once they'd gone. I got 3-4 paragraphs in this evening-- most, if not all, of which will probably get deleted and rewrote, as it felt like merely 'making myself write for 15 minutes' slush, and which took most of an hour to write-- before coming in here to browse the threads.

Now, I think I'll get to bed before 2 am. Dh is off tomorrow and Tuesday, so he complains if I write ALL day on those days, as well as all week. Don't understand why. Innocent

The Unit

Lisa, I've given up on The Unit.  It is on late here and I set up my dvr.  Only half the time it tapes, I think our cable scheduling is screwed up because what tapes is Cold Case - even though everything on the screen display says The Unit.  I hate watching things out of order, so I'll wait until it's out on DVD - I have all the seasons on dvd anyway.

I'm not even watching Dancing With The Stars.  For the first time.

Yay...

... my book is in, deadline has been met, and I can come out and play again.

What's the best for snuggling up with a romance or three? Ooh, I'm thinking a day like today. After weeks of relentless sunshine - we have grey, cool and rainy. Perfect for diving into my tbr pile.

I'm like you Donna - I haven't been watching much of tv at all of late... except reruns of As Time Goes By (which I have on dvd anyway). But I love Judi Dench. The tv always goes on, though, when the dh is home. When he's not I have a tendency to play my ABBA cds rather loudly.

Michelle! Nice to be able to sit and relax for a while.

Lol on the cable thing. It can be frustrating. Like I said, I used to watch all those shows. That was before my muse not only returned, but sits on my head while I write these days, so not much tv getting watched. Though, today I borrowed Chasing Liberty (Mandy Moore/Mathew Goode) from dd and was pleased when dh sat and watched it with me. Then he put in Pirate's of the Carribean, Dead Man's Chest(I think it was that one?) and watched half of it with me before he went to bed, and I finished my evening with Johnny Depp alone, in the quiet. During the first half hour our rain storm hit and we stood in the doorway, one eye on the movie, and the other eye on the rain/hail storm, that lasted all of ten minutes and then passed on. He got a 1" dia hail stone for me...? Cute.

Must-See-TV

Donna,
The Unit has been on late due to Basketball. I think so, anyhow. We've been staying up late to watch it. My Guy got me sucked into it with him. Because ya know I need more tv to watch. ;) Good luck on getting that book turned in tomorrow.

Michelle, welcome back. Congrats on getting your book in and meeting your deadline.

Lisa, I loved the movie Chasing Liberty. My brother bought it for my DD one year and we love to watch it together. As far as must see TV in this house--my new obsession is Castle. Although, it's starting to bore me a bit. I love the chemistry between the hero and heroine, but the murders are getting a little mundane--of that makes sense. But I have, have, have to watch Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays. No matter what. ;)

Rae

The Unit

Rae, this has been happening since the first of the season unfortunately.  So we'll just get the season when it comes out.  They usually release it around the end of September and I end up getting it for our anniversary!  LOL!

I have one more pass on the ms, with 2 things to layer in the proper spots, and then it's the send button.

AND OH CRAP!  I forgot I haven't yet written a synopsis....

books and deadlines

Good luck on getting that book in Donna!

Chasing liberty - I've not seen that one. But Lisa and Rae, you're making me want to go out and find it.

And I know I should be enjoying the freedom of having my book in and no deadline... so how come am I wandering around the house, unable to concentrate on anything for more than 10 mins at a time? I thought I'd feel so relaxed after the big rush... Undecided

Perhaps a movie marathon, chocolate and a nice bottle of red will help?

Deadlines

Congrats to everyone on getting the books away.  I've just started my latest and the delivery date is long enough away that I'm not panicking yet, but stripping wallpaper (did you know that can get addictive -- it's avery big room!) and playing with the paintbrush in the hard to reach corners of the new bathroom.  I'll fall out of love with the decorating when I have to paint the skirting board -- always my job because the dh's knees won't take it.  Then the new fitted wardrobes and floor...  This started out as a new bathroom, but I suspect we won't be done until the stairs (oh, that stair well!) that the last decorator made a mess of has been redone, too.

TV -- I had planned to watch The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, but it clashes with Lewis (which starts earlier) and for some reason the machine is refusing to record it.  Missed two now, so I guess I'm going to have to buy the DVD when it's released.  Gnash, gnash...

Hi Aurelene

There was a full length feature film directed by Mingella which was on the television here last year.  Now we have a series of hour length programmes.  They have such charm and yesterday I found my copy of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency which is the first book in the series.  Definitely worth a re-read.

PS I love you...

Ooh, yes, I've heard good things about this film. I shall add it to my list. Thanks, Lisa!

Liz, I hope the wallpaper is now, uh... stripped. May ask you for some tips down the track - we have wallpaper that is so awful it's scary. And we've put up with it for (I am very ashamed to say) 14 years. I was kind of hoping that it'd just... fall off. But after 14 years, I've figured that just isn't going to happen.

Number One Ladies Detective Agency isn't something I've delved into yet. But when I have more time... It does sound wonderfully quirky and charming.

Happy Easter

I've been lurking again as I wrapped up the editor pitch for Bites. Am currently watching a Memorial Service for three fallen police officers who were killed in the line of duty in Pittsburgh over the weekend. One of the officers brothers is starting to talk now and he's breaking my heart. The pipers and drummers and all of the officers who congregated here in Pittsburgh is breath-taking and awe-inspiring.

Kids are off tomorrow and Monday and then go back on Tuesday and we have places to go and people to see between now and Sunday.

I wish you and yours a Happy Easter.

Rae

Pgh police officers

I heard about that! My sister sent me some links about it. Such a tragedy. My heart goes out to their families.

Pitt Officers/ Easter

Nancy and Liz, I didn't know the officers, but this whole tragedy could've been avoided. The mother of the gunman knew he had guns and had to know her son put on a bullet-proof vest. The 9-1-1 Operator botched it and two of the four that were shot never had a chance. One of the officers was off duty but went to try and help his brothers. He was shot in the leg as he got out of his car. Another officer came to his aid, raised his hand to alert the others that he had a wounded brother and was shot in the hand. The officer who was shot in the hand died because he lost too much blood, the other officer never left his side. The fifth officer who was hurt broke his leg jumping a fence. All three officers who were killed left behind daughters. How the officers who apprehended him didn't all unload their weapons on this man is beyond me. When they told him the officer who was shot in the hand lived, the shooter said, "Oh, I thought I got that one too!" *cuss word*.

Had a nice Easter with minimal damage. My GMa made us laugh though. She picked up things at this auction place for the kids. Almost 17 yo received a nightlight and a notepad with flowers and an elephant on it and a holder for something that wasn't included in the box oh and he got a dolphin clock! The youngest got a baby rubber duck washcloth. He's 10 and his face turned all red when we asked him if he was going to go home and take a tubby. It says right on the package--soft for babies bottoms. haha.

Happy Tuesday! My kids went back to school today, so it's a good morning! What are all of you Romance authors and readers doing this week? Enquiring minds want to know.

Rae

Rae--you don't have to know

Rae--you don't have to know the officer to feel great pain and empathy for the family and friends of the men. Several years ago a community thirty miles north of me lost an officer--our whole area grieved for the young widow and very small children he left behind. It is a tragedy that reaches beyond the immediate community.

I'm currently reading, HIS PRINCESS IN THE MAKING. OMG it is sooooooo good! But my heart is breaking right at this moment. Incredible writing. Wow!

(A few hours the book is finished.) My heart is breaking... This story is so beautiful--it is a powerful story of love and loss and redemption (and yes, there is a HEA), but there is one thing missing...

The promise of a story and a HEA for MAX. Max is need of his own story, please Melissa, please write his story.

Donna -- this one is for you

Kiss Your, HIRED: THE ITALIAN'S BRIDE, is wonderful!

All six romances in this imprint for the month of June are excellent. They each bring something special to the reader. The last two I read were particularly gritty, powerful books (that would be Ms James and Ms Alward's books). I loved several of the stories for the sheer beauty the setting descriptions captured. Ms Way's story edged out the other two, the south pacific and canadian rocky mountain resorts. I loved Ms Meier's emphasis on the romance so I forgot I was reading yet another cowboy story (sorry, I tired of cowboy stories). Ms Hart's spell-binding getaway was thought-provoking as well as entertaining.

I have adored the blinddatebrides.com trilogy and Dani's story is so well done. But the last two stories had the grittiest topics. Topics that could have taken over the story and overwhelmed the reader. Ms James and Ms Alward use deft hands in landing their emotionally power-packed punches and they are both incredible stories. So ladies, take your bows.

And Donna? Breath. You have a winner!

Princess in the Making and Max's story

Nancy, thank you so very much! Toby and Lia have been characters dear to my heart for a long time and I'm so glad I finally found their story. You comments have brought a lump to my throat - thank you. Feedback like this makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Re Max's story, I've been contracted to write a novella for this, but only in the UK. I've just asked my editor if that must be Max's story, because I think he deserves a full-length novel of his own... Smile

You really made my day with your review and these comments! Got to read Donna's story too. Actually, I have an order to put in amazon anyway. I'm a big fan of Liz's books and looking forward to this month's installation!

What I like about HR...

I have enjoyed the Romance line for several years. Many of them are light, humor-filled book--lovely fast paced reads. There are also some that are more thought provoking, but so well written books filled with emotional connection. In fact, it is that emotional connection that is true of all my favorites in this line.

What do you like about HM&B Romances?

PS Melissa--I will be so sad if Max's story is a novella that is not released in the NA market. Cry I, too, believe he deserves his own HEA in a full length novel. After all this man has been passed over by, not one, but two lovely heroines. Cry

Sincere Apologies

Jayne asked me to move things out of the folders on Tuesday to see if more people could find the discussions. In my haste to do what I was told before the editor pitch, I didn't give enough warning time. I'm so sorry but am glad that everyone found us. We're working to get the folders up top streamlined so that you won't have to scroll so far to get to the discussions.

I'm waiting for Max's story, too, Melissa, and believe he's entitled to a full length book, but whilea novella may initially be released only in the UK, it will be available to everyone as an e-Book so unlike my Chosen As the Sheikh's Wife, which just missed out on an eBook release, no one will have to wait until it finds its way into the US market.

I just love the fact that the most recent books don't disappear, but are constantly available to anyone with a computer, mobile phone, or eBook.

Did someone say eBook?

Did someone say eBook? SmileI love being able to get books that are no longer available in print via eBooks. You all know that you can ask for older books to be added to the eBoutique, right? Over in the "Backlist Books: What Would You Like to See Reissued?" Last month "they" re-issued 50+ backlist books into the eBoutique, so they are listening. I personally would like to see all of Liz's books set in that nice little village re-issued and marked so that we can find them all. I think I'm missing a few of the early ones.

Liz, are you sure we'd be able to get the eBook here in NA? I can't download books from the eBookstore in the UK -- rights issues and it knows I'm in the States. B/c I would surely love to get the Medicals that are not released in NA via eBook . . . and I can't. Or at least I couldn't when the UK site first launched their eBooks. I can try again . . . I haven't since it first launched. Maybe they've started to work out rights issues to allow NA residents to get the eBook version?

Sorry to take so long getting back - deadlines and migraine do not make a pretty combination!

I want to thank Nancy and Liz for their wonderful comments on my stories...especially since the RT reviewer gave Princess a dull and boring 3. I don't know why but ah well - glad it's resonating with others than she!

Thanks :-)

Thanks, Rae...I guess I was a little taken aback because I think it's the best book I've done for the Romance line, I love these characters to bits (have for 12 years since I wrote their first story) and was surprised she didn't feel that too. But it's all subjective, just one person's opinion and you can't let yourself get down (or too up) by reviews. If I keep writing, keep selling and readers like them, that's what matters. Cool

Melissa: reading is subjective--there are some characters that don't resonate with me even if they are well loved by others. Your princess did resonate with me and for me I saw a challenging subject handled with a great deal of care, but you did not gloss over and make everything "pretty". There was a great deal of grit and reality in your story, along with the that there was hope, deep abiding love and a poignancy that pulled this reader in. Which review do you want to carry around inside and believe? Wink

Popping out of lurk for a sec.  Melissa, my Jan book got a TWO from RT, and I was so disappointed.  That book felt like fairy dust for me and I loved it.  I cried buckets writing the ending, not even the sad parts, but the happy parts too.  The moment when Lucy saw Brody across the dance floor...and yet, the story didn't seem to touch the reviewer at all or if it did it definitely touched the wrong way.  LOL.

There is no rhyme or reason to it, so while your balloon is kind of popped, just blow up another one.  Nancy is so right, and your readers will eat it up.  Plus...trust your editor.

It's hard because we're hungry for feedback but ultimately we're writing for the readers and because we have something meaningful to say.

 Hugs,

 Donna

Your experience with those reviewers are the very reason I pay very little attention to reviews when I am deciding which book I want to read.  I am aware that I may not like a story someone else loved but I'm equally likely to love a book someone else panned.

Reviews

We're all horrible vulnerable to reviews simply because it's going to be months, it can be up to a year depending on release date, before we know how the book sold and we're desperate for any feedback on how the public responded to our baby.

Reviewers, though, have their own tastes just like the rest of us.  I've had some seriously negative reactions to some of my stories and boy does it hurt.  It feels so personal, but truly it's not.  You put a book on the shelf, you have to accept the fact that it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.  And we all know how many times a poorly reviewed book has been a best seller.

And I do wonder how many of our readers actually ever pick up RT or go online and look for reviews.

There are other, more pressing problems, for the author these days.  Not reviews, not sales...  I've blogged about it this week.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Love, Liz

For you authors out there: I never look at a paid reviewer's take on a book before reading it. I don't want to know what they think of a book, because I don't want it coloring my view of the book. If I did see or hear of their opinion ahead of time I would do everything I could to dismiss their view from my mind.

I do glance at movie reviews, but if a certain local reviewer I know pans it, I am 99% sure I will love it. His world view is so different from mine and it influences everything he believes.

Thanks, everyone

Hi, everyone...oh, good, it's working today! Weirdly I tried to answer yesterday and everything typed backward and I had no idea how to fix it.

Thanks for the nice buildup on reviews. Liz is right, when our babies take so long to get out there, we tend to hang on the first opinion or two we read, which is usually reviewers - and when they don't like it, it really is the equivalent of someone saying, "Boy, your kid's really ugly." So I'm really glad to have had Liz's and nancy's feedback first. Thanks so much!

Melissa, I have been posting

Melissa, I have been posting my reviews on the M&B site as well. I posted, The Rebel King, today--I was just as impressed with that book--in fact, my first word of the review was WOW! I don't remember a book of yours I haven't enjoyed--so remember that every time you send a new book out into the world that there will be fans that LOVE the book.
