RX For Love: Harlequin Medical Romance (4)

Admit it, you're an adrenaline junkie. You love the urgency of the ER, the every-second-counts role of paramedic scenes, the heart-wrenching decisions that have to be made in surgery. But don't worry, we don't mind. We're just like you! So grab an sterile seat and settle in, because we want to know what you're reading, who you're reading and your own personal prescriptions for love!

New Thread

Hi Everyone:

Hope you all make it over to our new thread. Just finished a couple of night shifts and looking forward to a weekend off. Father's Day and the first day of summer (at least for those of us in the Northern hemisphere) are coming up. DS has his last day of school today. He has been very keen to start his summer break. Grad night was last night in our area and all was quiet. Thank goodness!! I hope other areas were as fortunate.

Oh, look at this pristine

Oh, look at this pristine room. Don't all those white walls scream out for some decorating? Oh look, I just happen to have some posters of my favorite TV docs. Maybe I'll just unroll them and put them up on the walls while no one is around. I especially like this life-size poster of Dr. McDreamy.

Nancy places the posters up on the walls, tosses some colorful throw pillows on the new sofas and slips quietly out of the room.

Chloe adds a poster of her

Chloe adds a poster of her favorite - Hugh Jackman.  Presses a kiss to her fingertips, then lightly traces those same fingertips over Hugh's mouth.  Sighing, she quietly backs out of the room and closes the door.

We need a Spanish doc...

... and I think Antonio Banderas will do very nicely. Wink

Kate tiptoes in, puts up his poster, then goes over to the table and adds a plate of home-made cookies, a pot of coffee and a dish of home-made strawberry yoghurt ice cream (NB this is the uber-healthy version - first try of making it yesterday and it was AWESOME. Why did I wait so long to get that ice cream maker?).

Then Kate remembers deadline, waves to everyone and slinks back to her desk...

Nancy slips back into the

Nancy slips back into the room to see if anyone else is there or has been by. She notices the Spanish doc and giggles. Ah, Kate H must have been here! But darn, I missed her.

Nancy leaves a message for Kate. Dear Kate: Your lovely sheikh book is a winner! Loved that alpha hero with his beta tendencies. If all your Presents give insights into the hero's thoughts and the couples are closer in age with heroines to match, I will have to start reading them.Kiss

After leaving her message on a 'doodle board' (a white board) she hung for that purpose, Nancy quietly slipped out of the room again.

From Canadian Kate

I wish Sunday would go on forever--it's a perfect day to write.  There's a cool breeze coming in past the open, sliding glass door. The recliner and laptop are positioned just right  My spaniel Molly is calm, even with all the birdsong.  My hero, Alex Smoker, former cop turned ED doc, is in a pinch.  I'm writing his way out of it.  He can be such a bad boy. Cool  I'll put the kettle on for tea if anyone would like some.  Wish I was a good enough cook to whip up some of Kate H's strawberry yogurt icecream.  I'll have to settle for popsicles.

Shakin it up

Wow guys-  why are we all tip-toeing in and out??? Let's get this party started. Looks like we need some heathen colonial influence happening.

I have the boom box, a case of bubbles and the stripper will be here any moment. He's dressed as a doc in a white lab coat with a stethoscope slung sexily around his shoulders but it's what he's wearing under that's the most interesting.... really, I've just had a preview..... Embarassed

Smelling salts anyone? Wink

Decorating the Walls of our New Room

Maybe we need to put up posters of some of the memorable covers of Medicals from over the years. All the covers are great of course but several continue the room theme better than others. (Brooding male doctors) Some of my nominations I found with a quick search of a medical romance database and my collection: (I'm sure there are others, perhaps even more appropriate)

The Consultant's Italian Knight by Maggie Kingsley Sept 07 (NA edition)

Her Baby's Secret Father by Lynne Marshall March 07 (UK edition)

The Medicine Man by Dianne Drake August 05 (NA edition)

The Greek Doctor's New Years Baby by Kate Hardy January 09 (NA edition)

Top-Notch Surgeon, Pregnant Nurse by Amy Andrews September 08 (NA edition)

Holding Out For A Hero by Caroline Anderson October 2005 (NA edition)

I challenge others to nominate other covers. We should also think of themes for some of our other rooms as well. Perhaps a baby cover room with Lynne Marshall's Assignment Baby and others; A wedding room with Melanie Milburne's The Surgeon Boss's Bride (April  08) and others. I'm sure there are other great ideas for themes as well.

Catching up and covers

Nancy - thanks for the compliments on my sheikh book. Yep, you've described my Presents down to a T. Innocent

Canada Kate - the ice cream is SOOOO easy. Just put strawberries and a bit of sugar and lemon juice in a blender, whizz together, add a carton of 0% fat Greek yoghurt and a smidgin of whipping cream or double cream (ummm... is that "heavy cream" in America?), whizz for a couple of seconds, pour it in the ice cream maker, and 30 mins later you eat it and smile.  (Today was raspberry ice cream - I sieved the puree first, and didn't add quite so much sugar. Lovely and tart and it tastes of just raspberries.) And most of the recipes on my website are easy, too.

Amy - yeah, trust you to bring in the boom box and the booze. And the stripper. LOL! Tongue out

And I had to google Texas catheter. Blimey!

Linda - great list of covers. I'd add Amy's wonderful Dr Romano's Christmas Baby to that. And Caroline Anderson had an anthology out, "Holding out for a Hero" - fabulous cover there, too. Actually, thinking about it, Amy had another cover I was really envious of - the one with the spaniel. That would've been out around the time of Breakfast at Giovanni's... I think, which makes it the year before last. Amy?

Righty - better go beat the outline of my new book into submission and work out how to implement the changes my lovely ed wants. I know it's a hard sell if they don't work together, but... she's on sabbatical (neurosurgeon - pain specialist) and he's a GP (family doctor). They're not going to work together much!  And I have to resurrect the person I killed off in the middle of the book. And the Regency doctor has to have a very, very, VERY small part. (Rats. She saw through that one. Well, she does. And I know she's right.) Might have to go and scoff my new discovery (rhubarb and custard chocolate puddles - they're kind of like giant chocolate buttons).

Late to the party

I've been tiptoeing outside for the last couple of days (was in Astoria, OR) so haven't been able to pop in, but MAN! I couldn't resist the music.

This room is rocking, (thanks Amy!) and I can't wait to try one of Kate's chocolate button thingies!  I'm afraid rhubard requires a lot of sugar to make it palatable (for me anyway)

WOW!  I love the decorating.  Great posters and Oh!  Look over here - a cover wall.  Nothing like a handsome man with a stethoscope around his neck, or a baby in his arms.  Or a spaniel ...

When does the uh hmm "show" start?  Wish I could stick around, but I've got a book to write.  Kate, your editorial changes sound doable, by all means.  There are sooooo many possibilities with the medical stories, you know?

Take care all - glad to see the new folks sticking around, and always love to hear from (well I won't say "the old faces" heck no!) all the others.

Amy, wipe that smirk off your face - you little devil you.  Did you invite ... holy cow ... him? >points with mouth open<

Popping by...

to say that I've been having HUGE problems logging in for over a month now. Once again I've used a temp password but everytime I try to change it, it still takes me back to the ID page (Sue aka MsCreativity) and then doesn't allow me further access because 'this user name already exists'. Grrrr, of course it does, it's me! I've also cleared cookies, etc and even stopped using firefox (I'm here now in IE). I've also tried deleting everything on my profile - just in case it's too busy...

So, I've spent far too much time trying to sort it out, but I miss you guys...if I'm shut out when I try to log in I'll give in and re-register at some point again...(this also happened back in 2008).

I've got a busy/hectic/exciting/scary time approaching...I've almost finished the latest wip (Romance) and I also have an appointment at a conference with a M&B editor Surprised. HELP!!!

I hope everybody is keeping well - pop by my blog or facebook, or tweet me or, better still, email me at romancewriter2006 at gmail dot com or susan _ rix at yahoo dot co dot uk.

Crossing my fingers for your editor pitch.

I forwarded your email about your problems getting in to the community to Jayne, and then I didn't follow up. EmbarassedI will do so today and see what we can sort out for you.

Oh, Amy...

Despite the fact my daughter graduated in the same day I chose to read your jellyfish book--I still managed to finish reading it. Since she had to be at graduation an hour before it started, I sat there reading until they started the 'memories' slide show about fifteen minutes before the starting time. By then I was around page 137. So once everyone settled in for the night I finished the book. I have loved all your various characters, but Izzy and Alex... sigh... oh my!

Sue - good luck with your pitch and hugs on the logging in woes. I know our Maggie is having the same difficulties. Please, please, anyone who has anything to do with fixing stuff - Penn, Rae, Jayne?? -  please help our Maggie. She's such a vital part of our little loop and we miss her. Wah! Maggie we miss you Cry

Nancy - thank you so much for your kind words and your lovely review. I've been anxiously awaiting my first review here on e-harl. You know when you talk a book up for so long and then you suddenly realise that maybe you talked it up so much its never going to reach expectations? I lurved Alex and I also loved writing a heroine who's so utterly screwed up by society's expectation on women's appearances and how, no matter how model-like they may be, it still does a number on their head.

After an awful day at work it was sweet, sweet, sweet coming home to your praise.

British speak - help!

Hi - I'm the newbie, Canada Kate.  I've noticed the British references to ordinary things in the medical romances and am worrying that my language might not be consistently right. Some Canadian crosses over but not so much the American. Is there a glossary somewhere?  Any advice would be so appreciated. Thanks, Kate

Nancy - so glad you enjoyed the books, and thank you for the compliment.

Kate G - best advice is to write for a lay person (I used to get pulled up for being over-technical) and remember the medical bits are there to support the romance - you're fine to use NA terminology.

Jellyfish - Amy's book is fab, and she has a great blog about it today (follow Lynne's link above).

It's been a while, because I've been writing my heart out on this new book.  I have to say that so far I'm pleased with the progress, too.

I am trying to focus on some

I am trying to focus on some writing--it is hard to squeeze it in. I had about five days off between our school year and our summer program. Now that I am back at work I'm chronically exhausted.

I'm thrilled with the medical blog, but miss chatting in here. Is our Maggie still having trouble getting in here? Where is Maggie? Gee that makes me think of a song, "Oh, Are you Sleeping Maggie?" which makes me think of a fiddle tune, "Drowsy Maggie". Come back Maggie, we miss you.

I like the blog, too, but agree with sheandeen/Nancy that I miss chatting in here. I guess I figure that we'll get into a new type of routine of staying on topic (LOL--yeah, right) in the blogs and chatting about life and reading and writing in here.

AMY

Looking for a Xmas miracle? Look no further. A Doctor, A Nurse: A Christmas Baby out now in the UK and online!

Hi all,

This month, the spotlight is on Harlequin Presents. Wayne is playing a cool game where you re-name classics with Presents-like names. I can't play b/c I can't remember any classics except a couple of Shakespear's tragedies and those kinda lack the HEA we want around here. But y'all should go play.

But before you go over there, I have my treasure hunt going and right now we're on question #3. And to answer question #3, you have to click on a particular book by someone named Kate Hardy. I don't know her, do y'all? Wink

If you played one of the early Treasure Hunts, then you might not know that we/I've changed the format. Instead of one long blog with all the questions that you need to answer via email to me (like the first 3 or 4), I ask a question every day or so and you post your answers (and hopefully some comments). Yes, that means that you see everyone else's answers, but so what? I often ask for your opinion (like, "which book appeals to you"). And the prize is book related (via a drawing), but not necessarily an eBook. The June winner is getting a bag of goodies from Jayne . . .

So come have fun over there!

Penn (sorry for hi-jacking your thread, Rae. I'll give it back now, go off the clock, come back to play, whatever you want . . . within reason Kiss)

Catching up . . .

or just playin' . . .

I'm home for 4 weeks (y'all will remember) and yesterday my mom and I had lunch with one of her friends. They picked the restaurant b/c it's good AND b/c there is a UBS a couple of doors down and a nice independent bookstore a couple of blocks up.

I'm not reading much. I've been getting photos into a photo album. I've gone through 2 packs of 250 corners since Saturday. That got me through a few months of 2006 and all of 2007. That leaves 2008 and 2009 (which don't have as many pics, for whatever reason), and then I plan on going back to 2000 and catching up to 2006. I picked 2006 as my start year b/c that's when we went to France for 6 weeks, so I was motivated to get those pics organized and it just made sense to keep coming forward . . .

Tomorrow I'm having lunch with Hosty Dream.

I guess Maggie's moving. What's everyone else up to?

Summer Update

It has been a quiet summer so far for me. For me and DH mostly working. DD is busy trying to earn money for next year of university coming up in the fall. DS is young enough to actually be on vacation. Currently he is visiting his father's side of the family in Nova Scotia. My BIL plans to teach him and one of his cousins scuba. BIL is an excellent instructor so the boys should haver fun. At least the sun finally came out the past couple of days and we got some great barbeque meals.

Hope everyone else is having a great summer, or winter for our friends in the Southern hemisphere!

Weather's been okay here in Georgia, though for a few days I didn't think my poor air conditioner was going to survive.  Once it hits past 95 you can hear it wheezing in the backyard.

My two oldest spend a lot of time with friends - staying over a few days, so it's like a mini-vacation for them.  We've been swimming alot, too.  They only have a few more weeks before they're back in school so they're trying to pack in as much summer stuff as possible.

To those who have submitted their MS's lately - any responses you'd like to share?Laughing

Summer so far

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy this summer.  My house guest from Italy is a doll, just a living doll.  She speaks English quite well, and we have lots of fun communicating with each other.  The other thing great about her is she recently lost 15 Kg. and so our diets are similar and we are compatible that way.  We watched BECOMING JANE together the other night, and she said she understood 80% of it.  Heck, that's how much I understood with those fast talking British characters.  LOL.

Stay cool in the south folks, and you lucky Canada girl Ms. Grimes, you!

Happy writing.  Oh, and if you're around tomorrow I'm up at the MedRo blog with, what I hope to be an interesting topic. Cool

St Swithin's Day

It's St Swithin's day here in the UK - apparently if it rains today we get 40 days of rain, and if it's sunny today, we get 40 days of sun. (Long story and not historically accurate!!)

The weather has just been usual British summer: a bit overcast, a bit of rain and a bit of sun Wink

It's the last week of term this week, so I'm trying desperately to finish my book so I can take the summer off with the kids. (Otherwise it'll mean getting up really early and doing a couple of thousand words before they wake up - might be Bad Mummy and let them stay up later, to help that...)

Swithin's and Groundhog days

Hi Kate!  Your Swithin's day sounds as accurate as our Groundhog day.  Feb. 2nd, both Canada and US wait for Puxatawny Phil to (SP?) stick his head out of his burrow.  If he doesn't see his shadow he somes out and Winder is officially over.  If he see's his shadow he goes back into burrow and we're doomed with six more weeks of winter. Did I get that right?  It may be exactly the opposite.  Tongue out

Fiona, I wish I were writing an Italian, but I will certainly have a source for any future Italians if I do.  Enjoy the skiing.

Hello to everyone.  Oh, I think So. Chloe was wondering about hearing back from UK eds.  Several of them are currently in US at conference, which means those left behind may be working extra hard, and there is that new Presents contest launching, which is bound to tie up more editors.  Sorry for the long wait time!

Potential new aspiring medical author

*waves to everyone" apologies for not being able to stop BUT I wanted to let you all know that I met a lovely young lady at the RNA conference.

Her name's Sarah and she's been undecided (since her editor appt) whether she's targeting the 'right' line (I think she'd previously tried for Presents). She currently works in a medical profession and by the end of the evening, after I'd raved about how wonderful the Medical series is, and how friendly and helpful you all are in this forum, I'm hoping she's going to redirect her writing towards targeting this line. :D.

When I saw her the next morning she was armed with a few of the latest medical romances she'd bought for research, so I think it's a good sign.

Hope everyone's well.

RWA 2009

Hi all!  I'm home from the Romance Writers of America 2009 conference in Washington DC.  The conference was fabulous, but I am SOOOOOO glad I planned an extra vacation day so I could recover today.  The conference was FABULOUS & I wish you'd all been there!  I'm slowly starting to post pictures over at my website blog & on Facebook, so if you get a chance and want to see pics, stop by.  :)

While at conference I got to talk with fabulous medical authors Laura Iding & Jessica Matthews.  I saw Lillian Darcy from behind as I sat in the row behind her during the RITA/GOLDEN HEART award ceremony.  (My roomie was also up for a RITA in a different category & a dear friend was up for two Golden Hearts! so I had a guest ticket to sit upfront-yea!)  Lillian was sitting with her Senior Editor so I restrained myself from gushing, but I do wish I'd had the opportunity to meet her.  Maybe next year.

I'm glad to be home, but miss my friends already.

Mainly, just wanted to pop in and say hello and hope you all have a lovely day.

Welcome home Janice!

Hey, Janice, I'll definitely be checking out your photos from conference.  It was a painful weekend, knowing I was missing out on all the great stuff.  I had a very good friend texting me during the RITAs and I had another writer friend over for appetizers and wine and we followed the results on the RWA website, but my friend kept texting wonderful tidbits, so I kinda felt connected.

Lillian Darcy was at last year's Heartbeat luncheon, and I know you were there too, but a lot was going on.  It's always like a zoo at conference.  Can't wait to hear updates from the US faction of MedRo!

Best Wishes,
Lynne Marshall

Oooooh, I'm so jealous, Janice. Washington sounds amazing. Everyone's raving. Also a great opportunity for a writer to refill her well.
