Sexy, Passionate, Desirable
by Wayne on October 18th, 2009, 7:11am
Are there any fellow Silhouette Desire writers out there who would like to share news, views and ideas? Would love to get to know some of you who may be headed in the "Desirable" direction.
Desire novels are sensual reads and the level of sensuality must be appropriate to the storyline. And above all, every Silhouette Desire novel must fulfill the promise of a powerful, passionate and provocative read....

Featured Books...
Has anyone one read any of the featured titles? Which did you enjoy the most?
Next week, I'll feature the remaining three books.
wj
Featured books
all of them. can't go wrong with any of them but I did like Kathie's the best. Probably because it was the last in a series and it was a wrap up, so there were lots of familar characters. Plus I love that cover. I've always loved covers where the gorgeous, bare chested H holds a baby but this H is looking down at the baby with such tenderness and the baby feels safe in his arms enough to sleep.

New Digs
Wow. A new home, with a new name. Thanks for the link, Wayne as it was hard to find, especially since this place has had the same name for years.
Onward and upward?
Currently reading MILLIONAIRE IN COMMAND and loving it, but that's not why I'm here. I hope that everyone follows the link and makes it over here. In March of next year, we're going to have a Desire editor pitch challenge with new, Assoc. Editor Charles Griemsman. So, now is the time to polish and complete your manuscripts! The lovely, Krista Stroever is going to hold another hour-long chat in March to talk about the Desire line and answer your questions LIVE. There will of course be more details to follow, closer to the time.
Rae
Hi Rae, that's great news.
Hi Rae, that's great news. I have a question, a few actually. Is there any chance instead of the usual Desire Pitch type of competition, the March competition can be more like the one Presents has? Where you submit the first chapter and the editor works with the winner for one year helping to complete the book? That will be really nice, wouldn't it? And perhaps we will see more unpublished writers being published with Desire? Any chance at all? By the way, welcome Assoc. Editor Charles Griemsman. Thanks.
Hmm
Tangiles,
While I'd love to say that's an excellent idea, I'm not even sure who coordinated the Presents challenge, but that's not what I do. That's not to say that in the future, other lines won't do the same thing--have the same competition. I'll ask if this is something Desire is considering in the future. And let you know. I'll also pass along your welcome to Charles.
Rae
Thanks Rae. I appreciate it.
Thanks Rae. I appreciate it.
@ tangiles
Just popping in to respond (sorry I've been gone so long, it has been quite a month)
I"m waving to Charles too, who might be stopping by--we are SO HAPPY he's here!
As far as the challenge goes, we're not looking to do one like the Presents contest. That's not to say we won't ever do it, but we're being really selective with new acquisitions, so it doesn't make sense for us at this point.I'm so looking forward to the March chat! I love chats!
Just poking my head in for a second
Hi, it's Charles Griemsman here. I just wanted to poke my head in for a second and introduce myself as the new Associate Editor on Desire. KristaS has been showing me the ropes this week, so bear with me as I get acclimated. One thing I can report--I'm having a blast and loving the books, both published and soon-to-be published! (I was tempted to put "loving the books" in all caps but don't want to shout in my first post.)
Will be back online later in the week with a photo and more details.
@tangiles: thank you for the warm welcome!
Welcome...

Thanks for dropping by. This is hosty Wayne. I'm resonsible for the Desire forum and keeping the ladies here in line. lol
Congrats on your appointment...It's great to have another male drop by occasionally.

Congrats on the new position, Charles.

And now you are trapped in the Desirable Den... Welcome Krista and Charles. <wicked laugh> No worries tho. After a couple Dirty Mothers, you won't care anymore.

@Penn--Thanks for remembering the SBS days, and for the shoutout to Tashya Wilson. I can't sing her praises loudly enough.

The Dirty Mother has been the Desirable cocktail of choice since "The Desirables" thread started a few years ago. Tequila, Kalua and milk with crushed ice...shaken, not stirred. Tastes smooth and goes down easy...until you make an attempt to stand. Fellow Desirables who have been around this thread as long as I've been know that my beloved bovines supply fresh, whole and yes, unpasturized, milk. (saves us from having to run to the 7/11 for milk every day. lol) Figure the tequila kills any nasty bacteria in the raw milk anyway.
Wayne, I am most annoyed! How is it you've been our host for this long and we're only now learning that you have a whip?
Bet you have leather chaps you're not telling us about too! Fess up man!

Charles, I'm working on a story I hope to sub to Desire. Would it help if I send a Dirty Mother along? Maybe you could drink it first and *then* read my query. Don't know, with so many r's under my belt maybe I need to get an editor drunk...

Wayne, I'm trying to think of something really good to respond to that and I'm coming up empty. Maybe it's because Wench is trying to get our new Assoc. Editor drunk.
Although that might not be a bad idea... Kidding, Charles!
Maybe instead, we can ask Charles what Desire is currently looking for, and yes, what Wayne said about getting a book done and ready to go and entering the Desire Pitch Challenge in March.

I heard a cra-a-a-ck! Did someone say whips? Sadly, the only wip cracking I'm indulging in at the moment is on my current manuscript. Need to get something cracking there.
Lovely to see Krista and Charles pop in. <Yvonne waves, HI!> There's nothing like an editor comment to see the boards bursting. Just goes to show how many lurkers can be tempted out of the woodwork.
Cheers! <Yvonne helps herself to a very small Dirty Mother and drifts off to a corner where she can watch proceedings, as she is inclined to do>

I hear and feel that same whip. I have a 1st December deadline and another 100 pages to go...Of course, being patriotic I agree to judges the literary entries in our National Festival of Creative Arts. All 250 of them. Of course, I get VIP tickets too all of the events, performances etc, so I couldn't refuse.. However, the final judges' meeting tonight will bring it to an end...Only 5 more entries in the adult prose to read and judge and it all over.

Wow--finally a place where I'm not the lone male
I'm new here but think I found a place I can hang out for a while. However, I'm sure my name will be changed along the way. I have one novel I'm starting in a few days with a target fixed on Blaze, but now may reconsider bending it more for Desire. I'm still looking for main differences and could use a little clarification bewtween them.

Very good!
I have often wondered if anyone would ever create a line for guys who like romances. Is there enough of a market to carry such? Just a thought.

Sir John
Welcome to the boards! It's always nice to have a new guy on the block. Have you been writing long? Why Blaze? We have male authors who write for different lines. Never for Blaze or Desire, but that's not to say that you wouldn't be a great asset to either line. It's always great to get a man's point of view.
I'm not an expert or anything on the differences, but let me see if I can point out a few.
Blaze is more fun and flirty. The heroes and heroines are younger. They don't have to be rich. They can be blue collar workers and the emphasis is on the fun, flirty and sensualness. They're sexy inside and out. Think Sex and the City, where the characters are younger and not afraid to try something once. There's a high level of fantasy and eroticism in them, but they're not neccessarily erotic.
Desire is more lush and lavish. Alpha men who are powerful and have loads of money. They're the millionaires and billionaires who shape the world. He's arrogant but not abusive. He's not afraid to go after what he wants and won't be satisfied until he gets it. He owns the ranch instead of working on it, he owns the vineyard, doesn't work in it. He's the CEO. The VIP. He's the Tycoon. Have you check out our guidelines on here?

Tomorrow, we get to order December's Desire's. I just got my subscription for Desire in the mail. It had a couple from Nov and some of the ones from Dec. I cant wait to be able to order them. Then, I'll try nad get caught up on my reading. I love series and there are a couple I've been waiting for so that I can read the entire series. I hate waiting.
I also need to get my butt in gear and start writing. Anyone in here doing Nano? Good luck if you are!
Rae
Males in romance
Charles and Devon, it's eye-catching to see male editors and writers in romance, but refreshing, too. As a Smith graduate, chauvinism drives me crazy! In fact, back when I had my house cleaned by a service, my son was home from school one day and looked at the cleaning crew, then said, Mom, is that a man? Brian and I said yes, why do you ask? And he said, Well, I've seen lots of cleaning ladies, but I've never seen a cleaning MAN before! And on the topic at hand, I'm enjoying the Texas Cattlemen's Club mini a lot, although the villain became obvious in the second book (I buy them at KMart every month, so I have to wait a month or two to make sure I'm right). I really enjoy the 6-month mystery minis.
Blaze, Desire...
SirJohn
I've always defined the difference between the two lines as Hot or Hotter. Desire is Hot, Blaze is Hotter... However, the are several other differences I've noticed and Rae has indicated them well. I have also noticed that the Desire heroes are usuall richer and move in upper middle class circle...Blaze heroes can be anyone...plumber, doctor, lawyer....
Wayne
Welcome! :-)
Hi Sir John, and welcome to our thread. You raise an interesting question about the differences between Desire and Blaze. To me much of the difference is in tone. There's a lighter feeling about the Blaze stories, I think Rae referred to it as younger and flirtier. There's a sense of it being just that little bit closer to reality, as well. With wonderful intensely passionate relationships between young modern couples. That's pretty much it, from my point of view. To me, the Desire stories have that little edge of fantasy to them. I often tend to think of my books in terms of modern fairy tales. Claiming His Runaway Bride, was a Beauty and the Beast story. The Boss's Christmas Seduction, was a Cinderella story with a twist, etc. The heroes are powerful and entitled men, the heroines are strong but flawed (human.) Your best bet is to read both lines and see just where you feel most comfortable writing.
Oh, just one more thing to add. As Wayne said, Desire is Hot, Blaze is Hotter. But to me, Desire is more sensual, while Blaze is very definitely sexy to the max.

Author copies
I'm really excited. My author copies for my December release have arrived. Since I think it's got one of my best covers to date I was thinking of dreaming a contest, to be run through my blog, and giving away some copies before Christmas. This led me to wondering how many of the eHarl community enjoy entering contests like that and how challenging you like a contest to be, e.g. automatic entry just for comment, or having to do a little research and having correct answers only entered into a draw.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
