SEDUCTION: NINA BRUHNS TURNS UP THE SUMMER HEAT!

SEDUCTION: NINA BRUHNS HEATS UP THE SUMMER

Nina Bruhns takes us behind the scenes to the exotic island of FIJI, the setting for the first book in the Silhouette Romance Suspense new continuity, SEDUCTION SUMMER. This explosive miniseries begins this month with KILLER TEMPTATION.

This assignment in Fiji was supposed to be Zoë Conrad's ticket to a new life of excitement and adventure. But immediately stumbling over a body was a whole lot more excitement than she'd bargained for.

Then the dead man turned out to be very much alive—and she found herself giving in, almost against her will, to his slow, sensual seduction. And yet…millionaire hotel owner Sean "Breeze" Guthrie's killer smile couldn't quite conceal the darkness in his eyes. Was he really capable of the crimes he was accused of? Was she falling—and falling hard—for a murderer?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nina Bruhns credits her gypsy great-grandfather for her love of adventure. She has lived and traveled all over the world, including a six-year stint in Sweden. She has been on scientific expeditions from California to Spain to Egypt and the Sudan, and has two graduate degrees in Archaeology (with a specialty in Egyptology). She speaks four languages and writes hieroglyphics!

But Nina’s first love has always been writing. For her, writing for Silhouette Books is the ultimate adventure. Drawing on her many experiences gives her stories a colorful dimension and allows her to create settings and characters that are out of the ordinary. Two of her books won the prestigious Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award. She also has written two bestselling novels under a pseudonym, Nikita Black.

Dead bodies and bloody Mary's

Hi Nina,

I just read the excerpt for Book one, and I was laughing SO hard!  Where did you get the idea for the *dead* body??

Jayne

Hi Everyone!!!

Hey all!

Thanks for the intro Wayne!

SEDUCTION SUMMER is a fabulous new SRS mini-series featuring some of the hottest authors in Romantic Suspense. After my KILLER TEMPTATION is released on June 1, comes KILLER PASSION by Sheri Whitefeather on July 1, and wrapping up on August 1 with Cindy Dees' KILLER AFFAIR.

These are really fun, really sexy books which I know you'll love! Trust me, the perfect beach reads :D. Along with the emotion and sizzle you've come to expect from a great Silhouette book, this mini-series also has some great suspense!

So, have at it with any questions you might have about the series, about SRS, or about writing in general (or anything else...I'm easy ;D).

Hope your summer is starting to heat up! Mine is ;D.

The perfect bea...ah, office read!

Hi Nina,

I read KILLER TEMPTATION in one day...yesterday! Originally got it for my trip to FLA in a few days but I couldn't wait to dive right into this one! Started at lunch time and whew...it got quite warm here in the office! Innocent I love your books and you never disappoint...from the lush setting to your lush heroes! Finished it late last night (bedtime? what bedtime?) and went to sleep dreaming of tropical places and deep tans!

Thanks for the perfect summer read! And for the picture of Breeze...just how I pictured him! Laughing

Planning a Series

Nina

Tell us abit about the process to get a series like this going and the part you played as the debut author.

Paradise...?

Thanks for all your sweet comments! It's always so great to hear that someone out there actually reads my books and enjoys them! Sometimes, slaving away at the computer all by yourself day after day, you wonder if you just send this book off into the Great Void and no one ever sees it, and that the copies you see at the local Walmart are just clever illusions. It's always a thrill to hear from honest-to-goodness readers! Laughing

As for how I came up with the idea...well, my editor called and asked if I'd be interested in kicking off a very fun and sexy summer series along with Sheri and Cindy, so naturally I jumped at the chance to work with these fab authors. The series mandate was simple: sex on the beach and lots of it! Oh, and maybe a little suspense thrown in. Cool Okay! We can do that! LOL.

The first place everyone associates with paradise is Fiji, So we thought, yeah! Let's set the series there! I had actually visited Fiji a couple of years ago with my son on the way to New Zealand, and it was absolutely gorgeous. What a great setting for a heroine to meet her dream man and fall in love! And what better place than a romantic bed and breakfast tucked away on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere?

Fiji paradise

That's where we came up with the idea of secret hotel evaluators, and gave that job to our heroines so they could all be tied in, but could end up in different places (to make it less complicated to set up the "world").

But naturally, there had to be a fly in the ointment, so to speak. So Jayne, to answer your question, I just pictured Zoe arriving at this idyllic, wonderfully amazing place and standing there in awe. What could possibly go wrong? Yeah, a dead body in the hammock would be fun! And better yet, have it the hero! From there it all just practically wrote itself. This was one of the most fun books I've ever written, for sure.

So sit back, relax with a bloody Mary, or the umbrella drink of your choice, and enjoy!!!

Hi Nina, First off, I

Hi Nina,

First off, I just have to say...you amaze me.  You're like a Renaissance woman.  I'm in awe of all that you done and continue to do.

Secondly, how do you balance the romance and the suspense in your books?  Do you write two separate stories and weave them together?

Woman for all seasons?

Tchaaa... maybe not <G>. But thanks for the compliment Vivi! Coming from you (who does so much writing and promoting and other fun stuff it exhausts me just thinking about it!) that is the supreme compliment! Thanks! Smile But it's probably more an issue with me of a short attention span <G>. LOL.

As for the romance/suspense mix... well... I think for me it all arrives in one package from the start. For instance, in coming up with the story for KILLER TEMPTATION, I had that initial vision of the heroine landing in paradise...but not quite. From there I had to figure out why the hero had passed out in that hammock like a dead man, and then find a complication that was fun enough and strong enough to carry the book, which because it's a Silhouette Romantic Suspense, must needs have a suspense element Wink. Throw in that because it's a series it has to have an overarching suspense thread we tossed a serial killer into the mix. Soooo... I knew I needed a mystery for my h/h to solve in my book (the disappearing yacht) and also set up the serial killer thing for the series (the hero gets arrested on suspicion of murder), preferably with elements and clues that overlap.

I think once you set up the basic structure of the actual plot part of the book, then you simply let your characters take over and interact while moving through the plot elements. For me, I always write Romance (not mystery, not suspense), so in my books the real story is about the hero and heroine falling in love. The suspense/mystery is only the backdrop. But you can't really seperate the two, and they both have to build as a single unit. They have to work together, play off one another, from page 1. Or else either one or the other sounds contrived.

Does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense

Makes perfect sense Nina!

For me, I always have to weave one into the other.  When I wrote Blood Secrets the mystery and crime elements were front and center and I had to go back and weave much of the romance back in.  With Dark Lies it was the opposite, the romance was front and center for me in my mind, and I had to go back and weave in the crime parts.

Interesting...

Interesting, Vivi! So... what do you start with? What is the germ in your mind that usually gets a good story rolling? What's your jumping-off point?

For me, I usually start with a visiual of the opening scene. An intriguing set-up that sort of haunts me until I come up with a story that explains why these people are there and doing what they're doing. Usually, anyway. From there I build the characters and the plot. Of course, there are exceptions. Like my only Nocturne to date, NIGHT MISCHIEF, which is a 2008 Rita Nominee (yay!). That one started out with the world we created for the DARK ENCHANTMENTS series, and my characters, whom I came up with to fit into the series parameters. To write the first scene I went more with mood than anything else.

But I imagine paranormal works a bit differently than other genres, in that
you usually start out with a world, rather than a single scene or characters. Or...???

Gail, Sheri (and anyone else who wants to answer!), what inspires you guys to a new story? How do you construct your romance vs suspense ratio?

setting

I always start with setting, and I've heard Gail say she does the same.  I need to know where my characters are, and have some kind of visual backdrop, before I begin to flesh out who they are.

I set all my books in San Diego, where I live, so sometimes doing research is as easy as jumping in the car and driving to the beach!

I have the book

but have not started it yet.  A group of us had lunch on Saturday with Cindy and she talked about the book a little.

If the cover for the other two are as hot as this one then they are well worth the price of the book.

Hi Nina!

Hi Nina!  Can't wait to read your latest book!  It's going to be my relaxation read for when my sister and I go to the beach. I know it will be great - your books always are!

Elaine--If you go to Sheri Whitefeather's website you can check out the cover for her book. Pretty hot!

I am looking forward to reading this mini-series.

Just finished the

first book and it is really good.  Sets up the series and introduces some interesting people.  Hope that we see a little of these two in at least one of the next two books.
