Weekly Online Read: Safe Harbor by Carla Cassidy

With the Material Witness in the Safehouse
In this online prequel to With the Material Witness in the Safe House, Maggie Halstead is on the run from an abusive ex-husband who has threatened to kill her. She changes her name and her looks and believes she has found a safe harbor in Raven’s Cliff. With the almost-constant dense fog and drizzle, some even say it’s cursed. But for Maggie Halstead, it’s heaven.

She feels like she’s finally found the place where she can stop running, stop looking over her shoulder for her monstrous, abusive ex-husband who wants nothing more but to see her dead. Where she can just be “Sally” the waitress at Hank’s Café.But then a sexy stranger named Cameron Walker appears — and he knows who she is. Maggie’s only hope is to convince Cameron that she is just a waitress named Sally, and that means keeping a very close eye on him.

I had to take the round

I had to take the round about way to find today's chapter but I'm glad I did.  Great first chapter, don't want to have to wait a week to get the next chapter.

Oooooh!!!!!!!!!

Who's the hot mystery man???  I can't imagine he's there to cause problems....  But who knows!  It's still early in the story yet.

Glad you're here Carla!!!!

Wow just found this story

Wow just found this story when I was trying to get into the daily!  I didn't think it was here yesterday!

What a way to leave us hanging Carla!!!   I"m thinking he's a good guy (hoping anyway) but what an approach...  wish this was a daily read!

Hanging!

Hopefully, the story will keep you hanging until the end!  It was such fun to write and the continuity that begins next month with my book, With A Material Witness in the Safehouse, has all kinds of creepy, gothic, fun elements in it!

Thanks for posting, guys, there's nothing worse than checking in here and discovering nobody wants to talk to you!

Carla

I love it. Thankfully, I

I love it. Thankfully, I only have to wait three more days for the next one.

Good beginning

Now we just have to wait and make sure he is a good. guy.

Will we see these characters in any of the books?

Elaine

I don't like this guy.  His

I don't like this guy.  His client is an ex-husband who is looking for his ex wife, and he starts without even thinking of the possibility that his client is bad news?  He doesn't even think about what his client's motivations are?  This is the kind of behavior that give PIs/cops a bad name.

FF is right

I'm not so keen on a dude who is bound and determined to hunt down a woman for a wife-beater. He seems too savvy to have been duped by the ex-husband. I'm curious what BS story the ex came up with to set the hound on Maggie with such diligence

wish this was a daily...

Cameron should look

at the pictures again.  The one from her husband is of an abused wife and now that she is away from him she is growing into the person she should be.  He should also ask how she got the scar on her breast.

Elaine

Cameron should be smarter!

I have to wonder if Cameron is so in need of money that he doesn't bother to really "looking" as his clients -- looks the other way instead.  I just hope that he doesn't put "Sally" in more danger.

Wonder what line of BS the

Wonder what line of BS the ex fed to CameronUndecided He must be a good sleth to have been able to track her down, you would think he could see the "beaten" look of her picture and wonder why she has a sparkle in her eye and looks so much better now.  I don't like him either FF.

I am assuming that since this is an intrigue that she will be put in danger and somehow Cameron will help her out in the end and they will have a HEA.

I noticed this is a prequel.  I hope it doesn't end like some of the other prequels we've had recently!

Tough Crowd!

Ah, I can see we have a tough crowd here!  My poor hero is going to have to win over some of you!

These characters don't appear in any of the books in the continuity, although the town, the lighthouse and a curse does!

And I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this one ends like some of those other prequels!

I just want to thank you all for continuing to read!

Carla

Carla,  It's a good thing

CoolCarla,  It's a good thing (for me anyway) when you get us all riled up about your characters!Cool

The last two prequels were rather dark without the HEA.  You had to read the next book to figure out what happens to the heroine.  I couldn't get into them enough to buy the next books.  In fact, I never finished reading one of them.

So far I don't like Cameron a whole lot, but I'm betting I'll like him a lot more by the end.  I'm sure he will do something to redeem himself.  So far, I'm not having any problems with this read except that it is weekly instead of dailyWink

HEA in Online Reads

Papaya

Like the book I read, I want diversity in the online reads too.  So it's always nice to have a change of pace, change of mood.  I like light and dark,...and I also like the idea of finding out what happens to the characters in the prequels when I read the actual book.

I guess prequels are a good marketing device.

Aloha no WayneI

Aloha no WayneSmile

I understand the need for diversity in the story lines.  I usually read to escape and I don't need a romantic HEA to enjoy a book, any kind of Happy Ending that is semi realistic would do!  After awhile the dark stuff gets to me.  I read enough non-fiction books, newspaper and magazine articles to get the "dark" side of life.   So... when I read harlequins I expect some kind of happy ending.  But, we are a divers community and in order to stay on top of the business end of selling books, I'm sure the only way to survive well is to cater to that diversitySmile  I have the choice of choosing to read or not to read, doesn't mean I won't keep coming back if I don't like a story Cool

As to the prequels, I think you are right FF, it's a great marketing tool.  I think I will like this prequel though as it is a stand alone, just like the H.O.T. mountain prequel wasSmile My 2 cents worthCool

Hope you've warmed up some Wayne!  It's raining here today (we need it), but still much warmer than Chicago with a little bit of a breeze keeping things cool!  We've got liquid sunshine at just the right temperature (high 70s). Surfs up on S, W and N shores, so the surfers are out in force!

a hui houCool

My two cents...

I too have not enjoyed the couple of stories that have been pre-quels; I hate having to wait for the book to come out and don't always have the time/money to buy the books. Unfortunately, my library doesn't carry all the Harlequins that I would like... Sigh.
However, I do love a great mystery! Have I mentioned that mystery/suspense is my favorite genre... :)  I'm not liking Cameron right now - hopefully once he gets to know Maggie/Sally better, he'll realize that she had a good reason to flee. I'm curious to find out the ex-husband's back story as to why Maggie ran away (I know it's an abusive story and I don't want the gory details, but the writer in me is somewhat curious). I also love that the story is set in Maine; will we be seeing other towns/areas in Maine or just Raven's Cliff? Can't wait until the next chapter! Is it Monday yet? (I never thought I'd wish it was Monday, but this story is making me wish the weekend passes fast!) :)

Side note to Wayne: it's freezing in Iowa, too! I'm from the Chicago area (I go to college in Des Moines) and can't wait to go back once finals are over! ~Kit

I just got in on this one

I totally agree with papaya when she said she likes happy endings -- that is a must for me.  You see enough unhappy endings on the news and in the newspapers.

I'm glad that this prequel is not one where I have to read another book to find out the ending.  I definitely don't like dark stories, but I do love mysteries.

I'm also wondering what kind of BS the ex fed Cameron.  I did think it was interesting that Cameron is thinking of how to get her out of her bra to see if she has the scar.

I have a feeling that this story will be interesting.

If this guy had done his

If this guy had done his homework, I would like him very much.  He's comfortable with himself.  But I can't believe that in this day and age that he would tell her ex where he thinks he has found her until he got more info.  Oh yes, he will probably save the day by stepping in to protect her when her ex shows up "unexpectedly", but he could have saved her a lot of misery by doing his homework first!

Nice time to think he'd

Nice time to think he'd might be a hired killer after she agrees to show him around!

I'm with you FF, I'd like Cameron a lot more if he had done  more research on why Greg wanted to find Maggie.  I'd like to know what reason the ex gave Cameron to find her.  If they're divorced he should have no reason to hire someone to find her!

They really need to get us a direct link from the chapters to this discussion page.   You would think they'd have figured it out already since it was working before.Undecided

Papaya, I've marked the page

I agree

with FF and Papaya.  I would like him much better if he had done his homework first.  I'm sure that in the end he will redeem himself, though, and save the day.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops.

Come on, Monday!Embarassed

Maybe something will

happen while they are looking at the town and it will make Cameron question what he has been told.   Maybe her ex did not tell him they were divorced.  I am sure Carla will get him straightened out.

Elaine

I've marked the page in

I've marked the page in favorites too FF, that is the way I've been getting to it.  But you can't even access favorites from the read page!  I end up going to my browser bookmarked gal pal corral page, then I click on favorites then I can click on the online read discussion that I've bookmarked in favorites.  I don't want to be bookmarking everything in my browser bookmarks/favorites, so it takes me those extra steps to get there, but at least I do eventually get hereEmbarassed  They had the direct link working before so I'm not sure why they can't get it to work nowUndecided

Missing Link

Sorry about the missing links to the discussions from the online read pages.  We've had a staff rotation and the new person responsible for that area, just isn't quite up to speed yet.  I've alerted the team regarding the omission and we should be getting back into the swing of things with a direct link to all online read discussions from the online read pages.

Went back to read....

Chapter 2, where we get Cameron's POV.  I found this, to make me now KNOW that he actually believe's Maggie's ex....

Although he’d told Greg that he was headed to Raven’s Cliff and was fairly certain his ex-wife was living there, there was nothing Cameron hated more than being wrong.

It also helps me understand how bad he's gonna feel when he realizes he's been had by an abuser.  I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt, cause if Maggie is fooling him, why couldn't her ex?  Wink

Hugs,
April

You can do anything if you put your mind to it.... but it won't go far without the rest of your body.

He knows that Sally is Maggie

He knows that Sally is Maggie -- he wants to catch her -- either startle into making a "slip" -- at the end of the chapter when he spoke about her "acting."  The part about getting her out of her blouse, would have been bonus to him since he is attracted to her.

I wonder if her ex is on his way.  He hired Cameron to fnd her--I don't think that he expects Cameron to kill her.  There is no way that Cameron can force her to go back with him -- it doesn't appear that she is on the run from the law.  Makes me think the ex plans to do his own "dirty deeds" or hire a killer.

As of now I don't see any redeeming qualities in Cameron.

RELAX

I think you are all being too hard on him, he is only doing is job.

The author's view!

It's been very interesting to me as the author to read all your comments.  Keep them coming!  If I don't succeed in getting you all to like and believe in Cameron eventually, then I've failed as an author.  However, in my own defense, if this had been a full-blown manuscriipt I certainly would have done things differently.  One of the challeges of writing these on line stories is the brevity needed to fit the format. And perhaps in my need to 'fit' the format I didn't flesh out my hero enough.

In any case, I always view reader comments as a chance for me to learn and I appreciate everyone who is following the story.  I still have a couple of weeks to pull it off, yes??!

Carla
