Welcome to the new abode!

I couldn't think of anything more historically clever than that. Sorry.

Maybe we could pick a time period to be in? Anyone have a favorite time period?

Right now, I'm totally into Revolutionary France. LOVE IT!

Er, wait... I can't see us in Revolutionary France. One, my French isn't so hot anymore. You know how they say "use it or lose it?" I've lost it.  Two, I know English back then was different, so I imagine it must be true for French.

Okay, so we won't pretend to be in a time period, but do share yours.

So glad!

Now we can all talk fun historical-ish stuff. I hear someone has a Gladiator book...

Me voici!

I'm here, too, but I'd rather not be in revolutionary France...something about that comment of "use it or lose it..." Wink I'm wondering how to work a good suspense plot into an historical... Actually, thinking back to the couple of western screenplays I've written, both had some suspense in them. Hmmm.

I saw the Gladiator at the store! I really wanted to buy it, but we had to have some major work done on the vehicle, so no new books for a while....*sigh*

Hope -- You need to go to the Harvest Festival and write a short story for the writing challenge.  The gift certificate is a $25 one for Barnes and Noble so you could buy Carla's book (and a few more besides).  So far there's no competition so who knows? :)  It's only 250 words so it shouldn't take long.

Revolutionary

Revolutionary France...cool!!  one of my wip's is set then :)  The late 18th century was interesting.  I know what you mean about the French, my reading is still good, but spoken French??  Egads!  I haven't spoken it in so long, I don't know if I could.

I LOVE the early middle ages though, it's my favourite period, I guess that's why I do medieval reenacting.  I absolutely love the Anglo-Saxons.  And that's another story I'm working on too, it's being typed so I can submit it.

I like WWI and WWII, but they are so close I just don't consider them historical yet.....

Just submitted for the

Just submitted for the contest---250 words is HARD :)

Yay Ila!!

So glad you entered!

Hope, you should check out Sara Mitchell's books for Love Inspired Historical. She does an excellent job of adding suspense to the story. I LOVE suspense in historicals.

I'm actually okay with WWI and WWII stories. I spent an entire semester in college studying them, and just love that time period. Well, okay, I probably should admit to loving all time periods. I'm a geek that way.

I LOVE WWII movies :)  but

I LOVE WWII movies :)  but mostly the action centred ones like "The Enemy Below".  I did write a first person piece in high school that was WWII, I wrote it as Field Marshal Rommel's wife---and before I get stoned, I admire his military genius, he was NOT a Nazi and was much respected by the English and Allies.

I also have a story I did in college for a writing class that takes place during Vietnam, everyone thought I should expand it into a novel and publish it....perhaps I will someday.

Just In Time

Guess I'm just in time to see the new place.

And I've got a question that I suppose I should know the answer to, but I don't. Please don't laugh. Okay, you can laugh a little.

What's an imprint?

Is it the "house" or "name" or "division" of a publishing company that books are printed under...like Steeple Hill is an imprint of Harlequin? That's what I've thought.

It seems imprints come and go. Sometimes I see authors talking about imprints that went by the wayside.

Contest

Just wanted to let you know I've entered the first chapter of my historical romantic suspense Burning Heart in the Christian Writers of the West contest. I can never remember the name of the contest, but it's something about "rattlers." Scary. :)

Trapped in time

My favorite period in history would have to be Regency England. When Harlequin had a regular regency line I was a subscriber and the first adult romance I read was a regency. Marion Chesney's Tilly. Its still one of my favorites. I've always wanted to go to the dances and wear the clothes of that era.

Oh. the Regency England was

Oh. the Regency England was awesome.

Regency

I've loved it ever since I disccovered it. I'm thankful there are ladies now writing Christian romances set in that time.

Yes, Nike, I believe you're right about the definition of Imprint.

Regencies and imprints

Nike, yes on the imprint. And YAY!!! on entering the contest. Good luck!!

I absolutely ADORE Regencies. It's why I like Ruth Axtell Morren's books so much. She does a lot of Regencies. As much as I hate to admit it here, my favorite Regencies are by Amanda Quick. LOVE the suspense element. See... I like historical suspense. And in a Regency.... YES!

One of my friends said that there are places where you can go to actual Regency ball reenactments. I would soooo love to go to one. :)

Nike and Dream

I love Regencies, too.  They have some of the wittiest conversation and those outspoken spinsters delight me. I confess I really like the Amanda Quick ones, too.

Regencys

I've only read a few Regencies, it's just not my favourite period, but I did just read one that I thought was very good, it was in my sisters TBR stack (mine's boxed up and ready to be stored)....."The Dutiful Rake"  it's a HH, so it does have some ....  steamy scenes between husband and wife, but nothing really graphic, and it's just a good story.

I hear you

I love the outspoken spinsters too. I imagine that if I lived during Regency times, that would probably be me. But maybe not. Women back then were socialized and taught a lot differently than we are today. So glad I live in this day and age.

Ila, I'm so glad we have multiple time periods to choose from. I think, as much as I like Regencies, I'd get bored with just Regencies. I really think Love Inspired Historical is smart in selecting a variety of time periods. :)

Follow Love Inspired books on Twitter! http://twitter.com/LoveInspiredBks

Variety is so good!  I

Variety is so good!  I love the LIH's I've managed to read, but still have a huge TBR pile consisting of many things.  I am so glad that this line was started.

I'd still rather live back then, have a real man---one who knows his duty is to protect, provide, and defend.  One who understands that God made man and woman differently for a reason and does his duty while I do mine.  I just don't think there are any real men left---they are married or dead :(

Funny conversation, that...

I was just chatting with a friend about the very subject of finding a good man last night. My friend found this great guy, he was completely perfect in all the ways you describe, an amazing man of God, but... he's in seminary, training to be a Catholic priest!

Men's and women's roles were definitely more clearly defined in the past, that's for sure. I think in some good ways, but also in some bad ways. I don't like the idea that women can't be whatever they want, but I do like the notion of letting women be women. Maybe we can't have it both ways, but it sure would be nice. Maybe the next generation?

Follow Love Inspired books on Twitter! http://twitter.com/LoveInspiredBks

Oh my!  Naturally!  I'm

Oh my!  Naturally!  I'm Orthodox, so our priests can marry, but that doesn't seem to help any, they're all married that I know.  I know very manly old-fashioned men in my reenacting group--they're married.  Prince Andrew's not married and seems nice and manly, but what are the odds of THAT happening :)

Men

I empathize & sympathize. Funny you should mention about the priest-in-training, Dream. I really liked one of the chaplains I met while Dad was in the hospital, but...if only he'd been Episcopalian or Orthodox instead of Roman Catholic...but then he'd have been married, too.

I love time traveling through fiction.

I used to accuse Firemen and Policemen of going through a course their last year that the final requirement for graduating was to get married.....and you know what my brother says about Bible College (he's a Christian minister)?  It's where girls go to get their MRS degree...now why didn't I think of that?? :)

LOL

I'd heard that, too. So, how do we keep our firefighters & police officers single long enough to fall in love with the other protagonists? Wink

Why I love LIH....

Dream

I just finished The Gladiator and thought it was an excellent debut release.  I can't wait to read Carla's next book in January...I love that time period, thought the plight of the Christians at that time was so sad....

I'm currently reading Elizabeth White's Crescent City Courtship and am enjoying it.  I like the references to medicine at that time and applaud Abigail's desire to be a doctor in a time when women had life so difficult.

While, I'm hosty over in Simply Series and Kimani, I read both LIH first.  Why?  I love Western Historials and the fare from LIH is great.  Add a little tenderness and people who are focussed on their spiritual life and it helps me to remember that God is good...

And the upcoming months look so great!

wj

Gladiators and Firemen!

Glad you enjoyed the book. I can't wait to get my copy... it's somewhere between the eHarlequin distribution center and my house. :)

My BIL is a fireman, and he didn't get married until his 40s. A lot of the guys in his station, as well as his police friends, remained single until well into their 30s. So there is hope!

I'm still holding out for a man who wields a sword :)

typing away on medieval and 18th century WIPs.......the medieval is in what I hope is final revision and then off to an agent once I find one!  :)

Men with swords are nice!

I definitely don't blame you there! I'm just glad the men with swords of today bathe regularly. Or at least more regularly than they did during the orginal men with swords times. ;)

Follow Love Inspired books on Twitter! http://twitter.com/LoveInspiredBks

hmmm....historic bathing

hmmm....historic bathing practises.......there's a topic!  And I am also glad they bathe more regularly now, although not so much when they're reenacting, they just dip in the horse trough, probably like they did then...ewwww

Anglo-Saxon WIP 55,240

Anglo-Saxon WIP 55,240 words and still typing......

The French Revolution only has 9,132 words typed so far....

I found out who my favourite (non Harlequin) author's agent is from reading her acknowledgements!  I have an address for her agency.  As soon as it's typed, it has a place to go :)

 If I just had titles......

That's great!!

I'm so glad that you're making so much progress. The books sound great!

Hi!

Hi eveyone!

I'm so sorry I dropped out of the loop like that.  :-)

Thank you for all your interest in The Gladiator--especially WJ!  I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :-)  I love your comments about LIH.  God's goodness is everywhere and all around us.  I'm so thankful to live in a time and place where we can be open about our faith the joy God brings to our lives.

Ruth, you saw The Gladiator in a store???  Where?  You have no idea how badly I want to see it in a store! LOL  We don't get them where I live until around the 10th. :-(    I hope you get a chance to read it.  I have several contests going on this month. Winnie Griggs was kind enough to interview me on her site this month and I'll be giving a copy away there.  Here's the site if you get a chance to visit: http://www.winniegriggs.com/author_vip.html

Just have to vent a bit...I

Just have to vent a bit...I realise everyone has their own opinion and point of view---and that is great---BUT how is it that some people post reviews on sites like Amazon that leave other readers wondering if they actually read the book?  You should have to prove you actually read the book before you get to put out an opinion on it.

Ok, got that out of my system.... :)

Read two wonderful historical romances and have two more sitting here to be read!  Since I packed only things I did not want to be lost and therefore had already read, it was a super treat to get Janet's historical in the mail Friday along with my gift card that I promptly used :)

And somewhere in all the reading I got some writing done too.  I have two secondary characters clamouring for attention......they will have to wait.   I found a picture of a coin and an engraving that give me some idea of what my hero in the Anglo-Saxon might have looked like, there's a good description of his half-brother in writing and that helped as well, but somehow I still keep picturing Fabio Embarassed

Amazon reviews

Ila, I have to chuckle because I've seen reviews on Amazon that say something like "I read other books by this author and loved them so know this one will be good, too." -- obviously hadn't read the book.  Or "I read the first page and knew it would be awful so threw it away," It's always good to read opinions like that with a skeptical eye -- for one thing, even if two people read the same book, they may have very different opinions.

Glad you got the book and, as for Fabio -- well, of course.

Janet--LOVED THE BOOK!!!  and plowing through the purchased ones with enthusiasm as well :)

Oh definitely two people can come up with different opinions, it's just the ones that, like you said, obviously didn't read it that feel the need to comment anyway.....oh well.

I don't think my hero is supposed to look like Fabio, but he does -- not bad, but just strange.

Amazon reviews

Ila -- I wonder if people get credits for how many reviews they do on Amazon so they are upping their count any way they can.

Glad you liked the book.

Absolutely!!

Whenever you have an idea for something fun, all you have to do is let me know. I'm happy to put it together. And... something we are TESTING, so if Jayne sees that we do well with it, we can keep it, and if not, she'll pull the plug, you can now create your own discussions here. Please use this feature wisely, but if you do have an idea for a new discussion, go ahead and create it! It does help if you talk to me about it first, because I can give guidance and/or help make it work and/or promote it better based on our schedule, but if there's something you're dying to do or talk about, you've got the controls. (And yes, I still do have the power to edit/delete content that is not appropriate. ;) )

Seriously, though... I HAVE been listening to the requests, and trust me, getting you guys the ability to create your own discussions is something I've been fighting to get you for a long time, so please do me proud. I told Jayne you'd all do a great job, so let's show her what we're capable of! :)

Oh, first, Janet, I will check it out! Thanks!

I forgot to mention and should have... the create your own discussion capability can't be turned on or off per board, it's an all or nothing deal. So, to get it on Steeple Hill, we had to turn it on everywhere. For the time being, please limit your discussion creations to Steeple Hill unless you get the okay from the host of the other board. Hope, I'm sure yours will probably be fine, but you may want to just check with Dee to make sure.
