Military hero/heroine

Dear all,
I'm just wondering how popular the military hero/heroine in this line. Is it popular? If so, when did the popularity start taking off? Will you share your insight about military theme and inspirational romance? How do you like them?

Military

Have you read Cheryl Wyatt's books? She's got a wonderful series called Wings of Refuge featuring military heroes- pararescue jumpers. I absolutely love them.

Military

I love reading the Military H/H books that have came through here. The Wings or Refugee books is a great series. If I am not mistaken Jillian Hart used a few in one or 2 of her McKaslin Clain books as well.

The Military H/h is VERY popular in all the imprint lines published by parent publishers Harlequin and Mills &Boone.  It's a popular storyline in Harlequin Americans  and quite popular in the Love Inspired imprint line, also.  As with the other bloggers above, I, too, suggest that you read ALL of Ms. Cheryl Wyatt's Wings of Refuge series.

Being a retired Marine, I find the Military themes quite interesting.  It's good to see stories where the guys that have given of themselves in the United States Armed Forces come out as fine husbands, fathers, boyfriends and lovers - - instead of being portrayed as losers and people with mental problems.

To me, the inspiration fits in perfectly well with serving the United States in it's military.  When one has seen/been in combat, he most certainly believes in the Lord and has faith in the Lord to see him through!

Hope this helps a little.

that's very insightful...

I've had several schoolmates and a couple of cousins go into the military, and I respect them tremendously for it.  It's interesting having known them as kids to see how military life has hardened them, but not in a bad way.  I think that's one of the things that make military characters so appealing.  They have a lot of emotional depth.

I'm glad to see the

I'm glad to see the military hero/heroine making an apperance in the Steeple Hill lines.  With the number of deployments increasing and the absolute chaos it's been for those who serve in recent years, books like the ones from Cheryl Wyatt, Jillian Hart, Patricia Davids are such encouragement!

Using the hero/heroine as a service member is hugely popular in romance titles... but for a lot of us (myself and friends) we want and need something that can remind us of the bigger picture- that we're not alone and that there's nothing that will come our way that we can't overcome with God.  Several of my friends who serve (vs being the spouse) need to know that there are men and women who can endure a deployment faithfully, that some families do stand strong... so please, keep books like those coming!!!

Great New Thread!

Thanks for adding it!

My dad was career military, so I have a soft spot for the services and stories about them! Hmmm. Maybe I should write a mililtary hero, too...

Thanks gals!

Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for your comments and sharing thoughts. I agree with that some authors (as you named, like Cheryl Watt, Jillian Hart, Patricia Davis) do a good job at depicting today's military issue in Christian romance context. I will keep track on their work!

Do you read other military hero stories in other lines too? Army_Angel1 likes Love Inspired because it is very encouraging and reminding her with God's support. What other gals think of non-Christian military heroes??Do you particularly prefer Christian military hero to ones in other line such as Harlequin Americans (Thanks HockyJock for your suggestion) or Blaze (they have a lot of tough military guys)?

@Army_Angel1: Thanks for your link to the beautiful movie . :-)

@Jessiecue, HockyJock, Rachelle M, Army_Angel1: Thanks a lot for sharing how you relate your reading to cope with the hardship of today's military life. I imagine that's a tough job, and we all need spiritual help in that situation.

@Dream-eHQNhost: Thanks for bringing up Jillian's new work.

@Hope Chastain: Many romance readers turn into writers! The readers know what the readers wanna read! You should write~~!

I love books about the military.

Military heroes in the romance lines

I just started reading Catherine Mann's HQN military trilogy. The language is a lot rougher (and probably more accurate) than the Love Inspired military heroes. I've read some in HAR, as well. I love a patriotic hero. So far, I can't remember reading one in a historical, but that would make a good novel for the right author!

I'm working on a romantic suspense at the moment, but the hero is a deputy sheriff, not a military man. Hmmm. I could make him be a veteran, or even in the National Guard......that might add some tension... Of course, the Guard has been being deployed a lot lately...wouldn't want him to have to be shipped off right as the novel was progressing... Surprised

Military heroes and heroines

I enjoy books with military heroes but meeting them in real life can't be beat. I can't begin to express how moved I was by the pride and dedication I encountered when I wrote my Army stories about the Mounted Color Guard at Ft. Riley. As a mother and a grandmother I just wanted to hug those young men and women. Okay, I'm a sucker for their cavalry horses, too. Maybe I saw one too many John Wayne movies when I was growing up. I like the cavalry, but I married a sailor. A submariner to be correct. Yes, I love military heroes, especially my own.

Oooh cavalry

Now there's something we don't see enough of! I guess they don't really need horses these days though.

It would make...

...a great Hero for an LIH, though! Cool (Now I'm whistling the theme song to "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.....") Hmmm. Maybe that should be my next project, after the suspense NaNo.... I know the time period & area pretty well... And there's a ton of research material available. One Cavalry officer's wife said living in the desert in the summer was next door to that place we're not supposed to mention in a Steeple Hill novel, except when referring to the real place, rarely. Considering that wool was the fashion at the time......whew.
