Decorations

We decorate the house, inside and out, lightly for Halloween, emphasizing harvet and autumn, but we did have a few a few cute Halloween kittens and a silly witch or two. I've already taken those down (kitties and cackling women), but left all harvest things  up.

To this I add ceramic pilgrims I've collected over the years. This year I picked up a lovely wooden carved harvest angel with a prayer inscribed on her skirt, which I put on my baker's rack.

I have a special turkey recipe I make every year that DH looks forward to.

Wishing all at Steeple Hill and Harlequin a blessed Thanksgiving. :) :) :)

Missy's Thanksgiving Blessing

It’s nearly Thanksgiving! Can you believe it? It’s one of my very favorite holidays, if not the favorite. And the most special thing about Thanksgiving is all the great memories of family at holiday celebrations past. The ones I loved best were the years my family went to my grandparents’ house and spent the holiday with them, my aunt and uncle, and my favorite cousins. My cousins, my sister and I are all stair steps. Five girls, born one each year for five years in a row. So you can imagine how much fun we always had when we got to be together (usually a couple of times a year). And Thanksgiving was a blast. We always complained when my oldest cousin would get to sit at the grownup table, and the rest of us would get stuck at a card table in the living room. Poor Ann Beth. I’m sure we gave her so much grief over that! And we couldn’t really complain because we always laughed so much—and ended up getting in trouble. :) My grandmother had all her regular foods she served: turkey, candied sweet potatoes, regular cornbread dressing—with a batch she just made for me that was extra moist, oyster dressing (ewww!!), mashed potatoes, broccoli casserole, homemade rolls and cranberry sauce. Then, of course, pecan pie. I think she usually also had pumpkin pie, but I never could pass up the pecan so can’t remember for sure. It’s been over 20 years since we all got together at my grandparents’ house. Almost 15 years since I’ve been together with all my cousins at once. I miss those wonderful times. But I’m hoping that nowadays, I’m helping start new traditions for my own children. I’m hoping that one day, they’ll be telling their own kids how much fun they’re going to have when they get to Grandma’s house…

I can't believe Thanksgiving

I can't believe Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. What I love about Thanksgiving (besides the food) is getting together with my family.

One of my favorite dishes is cornbread stuffing. I also love turkey with cranberry sauce.

Yum!

Margaret, now you've got me craving it. :)

You know, I get a craving about this time every year. Once I broke down and baked a turkey. Then no one wanted it when the holiday got here! :) So I've learned to resist.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday too. It's the time where all of us really get together. enjoy each other's company, checking out each other's lives and such. can't believe it's fast approaching. time really flies fast.

Carlobee, I love getting together with family, too!

Jillian, I never can hold the pie right after lunch (we eat at about 1 or 2 pm). So I usually end up having pie for my dinner! :)

Yes on the pie!!

My BIL eats his first because it's his favorite part. I find that, even though I try to pace myself with the meal, I end up having to wait a couple of hours before diving in to the pie. :)

What kind of pie does everyone like? At our house, we do a variety: pumpkin (because who can do Thanksgiving without a pumpkin pie), cherry (hubby's fave), pecan (a close second for hubby), apple, and usually something else to be creative. I like variety. Really, the reason we do apple is because it's soooo good for breakfast the next morning.

Pie

I can doThanksgiving without pumpkin pie because I don't like it!!!  Give me good ole CHERRY pie or good ole PECAN pie and I am in heaven.

Thanksgiving

I love Thanksgiving because I get to watch football while enjoying a nice dinner with my family. Last year was the first year I pretty much made Thanksgiving dinner on my own. It was a good learning experience. Now I know what to do and not to do lol I love pumpkin pie! I bake my own from scratch. I also make a chocolate pie for my brother since he is not a fan of pumpkin. I get two Thanksgivings because the next day all the family gets together at my grandparents for another Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanksgiving has been a day

Thanksgiving has been a day when we all cook together all morning and eat together all afternoon. When my girls were little we would put on the parade. I have one dd that still likes to watch the parade. She comes and helps during commercial breaks. The last few years my sister's adult children have joined in with us. (My sister lives far away, but her youngest is going to college near enough to us that it makes more financial sense for her to spend the long weekend with us.) This has been such an added blessing in our lives.

On "Black Friday" while everyone else is in the stores, we are pulling out all my christmas villages out of the attic and setting the houses up all over our house. It is a holiday filled with talk about blessings in our lives and gets us set for advent.

Mine's definitely pecan! But I love pumpkin, too. I'll sometimes have a small slice of each. :) And then sometimes my uncle brings a cheescake. Goodness, I have to have a bit of that sometime later that night. Can't pass up cheesecake.

Nicole, I did the whole meal myself two years ago. I was so tired I could hardly eat! I'll have to learn to ask for help next time. Or cut back some. :)

Nancy, we love the parades, too! And then it gets switched to football about the time I'm ready to take a nice long nap. <g>

Thanksgiving

There is so much I like.  First of all, it's a day to give Thanks and appreciate and be grateful for all we have.  I love the Macy's Parade (especially if Snoopy has a balloon that year)  Football games are great too especially if the Cowboys win (DH"s team Smile)   The food is always so delicious.  Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole and pumpkins pie.

Thanksgiving

Since Dream asked me to write about my family’s Thanksgiving traditions, here it is. : )

I grew up in rural Washington State in a small farming community east of Seattle and tucked in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.  I remember our lights going out for most of my Thanksgivings while I was growing up. We didn't get severe weather often, but for some unexplained reason we nearly always got a major storm on Thanksgiving Day.   Once, when we actually didn't have a storm, a driver ran off the road and into a power pole ten yards from our driveway--no injuries but yes, the power was out. We lived off the beaten path, which meant that when disaster hit and the utility lines went down, we weren't exactly at the top of the power company's fix-it list.  We spent many turkey days in the dark.  But did we go hungry?

Not a chance.  It became a joke in my family.  We were serious about our food, so instead of being caught with nothing good to eat we went proactive.  The day before the holiday and with an eye on the weather, I would help my mom in the kitchen with cookies, cinnamon buns, pies, baked beans and her homemade dinner rolls.  Mom would have the turkey ready for the oven so we could get it cooking very early on Thanksgiving morning--usually before four am--to beat the anticipated power outage.

The lights always went out around 10 or 11 just about the time the turkey came out of the oven perfectly moist and fragrant.  My dad would bring in an armful of wood for the fireplace and the woodstove.   I would light candles, and my little brother would set the table.  Any food that wasn't ready we would finish cooking on the top of the woodstove--the sweet potatoes, the green beans, and we would even warm the rolls wrapped in tin foil.  It almost felt like Thanksgiving in another century.  We could have been pioneers dishing up a holiday meal in our shanty.  We ate by candlelight, kept warm by the fire and told stories until our sides ached from laughing.  The power would inevitably come on later in the day--usually near bedtime when we had already eaten our supper and washed the worst of the dishes with water heated on the stove.

Times have changed.  I live on the beaten path in a city, and the power has never gone out in my house on Thanksgiving.  I don't have a woodstove and I don't need to eat Thanksgiving dinner by candlelight--only by choice.  As wonderful as the holiday is, it always seems like some adventure is missing.  My Thanksgivings these days are tame by comparison!

Gingham Bride, LIH Nov
The Soldier's Holiday Vow, LI Dec

What wonderful memories Jillian!

It's nice that the power going out instead of being something that everyone was bummed out about became a wonderful memory created.  I thought it was neat that you even started planning for the outage and getting the food ready before it!  I lived on a farm for a short amount of time in CO, and I never wanted to leave, but as kids things aren't always in our hands, so we had to leave.  I hope to someday live in the country again though.  I miss having horses, chickens, and other animals and just the feel of the country.  I confess I like the big city and all the shopping, culture, good resturants, etc. as well however, but where we lived we weren't but 45 min from Denver, so that was perfect!  I would love to have that sort of location again :)  Do you ever miss the country?

Kate from Goodreads :)

My thanksgiving memories...

It's funny the things you remember.  The memory that stands out the most for me was that our family got out all of the good things.  The good dinner plates, the good lace table cloth, we pulled the good oak table away from it's display spot where its leaves were down and it held decorations to the center of the room to use for our meal.  As a child it was unusual to me to make such a big deal out of a meal.  I didn't understand why we didn't just eat at the little table in the kitchen as we always did, or why we couldn't just eat on the regular plates.  It was that I didn't like the extra effort; I just didn't see why the adults made such a fuss when I would have liked everything just as well the way we always did it.  It wasn't until I got older that I finally got it.  Each piece, the tablecloth, the plates, the table, all of it came together to create a memory, to preserve a tradition that had been handed down, to show how special each of us were to our family.  It was all a gift, a gift of love that we could count among our blessings that day.  I find now that the details in so many things are important to me.  I love to decorate gifts with special touches, write something special for each person in every card I send, not just sign my name (although I don't mind getting those cards either, so no offense to anyone that isn't into writing messages :), but it's what I experienced as a child that made me want to do those little extra touches and I am thankful for that.  I know my family loves all the little details that I put into celebrations and everyday, and I hope I am passing it down to my child, and creating wonderful memories for her as well.

I am also thankful for my daughter, husband, sister and mother, my health, hubby's job, our home, for the Lord Jesus Christ being mySavior, so many things....

I love pie too! :)

My favorites are pecan, pumpkin, and buttermilk, yummy!

What a great story!

I wonder if your trip back in time has anything to do with the fact that you write historicals? You certainly got a taste of it growing up. :)

Thanksgiving

Hi Kate!  It’s great to see you.  Thanks for dropping by.  I was blessed enough to have an optimistic family.  We learned to roll with the punches, since as you know living in the country has its own unique set of challenges.  I’m sorry you had to leave your farm as a child and I so understand what you mean by missing the animals and being in the country.  Although it’s sure nice not to have to drive the garbage half a mile to the county road for pickup—curbside service is fab.  So is having a mall fifteen minutes away instead of an hour and a half.  I do miss the country and I’ve always wanted to move back but the Lord hasn’t led me there yet.  I keep hoping, though.

Your memories of Thanksgiving sound wonderful.  I can picture it from what you wrote.  You’re so right—it’s the memories that the traditions bring as we get older that hold so much value and love.  It sounds to me as if your family is very blessed to have you. : )

Buttermilk pie?  I’ve never had that before.  I’m deprived.  It sounds yummy.

A Veteran's Thanksgiving

Given that it's Veterans Day, I thought this would be appropriate.

Nineteen years ago, I was a private in the army, and I was deployed to the Persian Gulf for Desert Shield.  We'd been in Saudi Arabia only about a month, and already the routine was wearing us down.  Every day, each meal was the same--the menu didn't vary much.

Then we received the announcement that President Bush was coming to speak to the troops.  The company couldn't send everyone, so they picked a few people from each platoon.  I got picked from mine--my squad leader told me I was the only he trusted not to get stupid if I had an opportunity to meet the President.  He didn't even trust himself not to!

We were bussed up to the Royal Saudi Air Force Base for the speech.  We had to stand in a very long line and go through a metal detector.  Any bags we carried were searched.  The most striking thing I remember seeing was the Air Force One plane parked on the runway.  There were so many people there that the President seemed like an ant in the distance.  Dennis, who had come with me from one of the other platoons, managed to work his way through the crowds and was able to shake Bush's hand.

After the speech, we were treated to a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner.  It was like being a kid in a candy store.  Everything was on a huge table in the center of the mess tent, and we could just help ourselves.  They'd even scattered Mars bars on the table (a much coveted delicacy).  Then it was back to business as usual, but it was a great day.

Missy~ I learned that as

Missy~ I learned that as well. I'm putting my brother to work this year. I was exhausted by the time it was ready to eat.

Nice Thanksgiving memories!

One memory that comes to mind was a few years ago. My cousin came up from Florida. I can't remember what we were talking about, but we laughed so hard we had a hard time catching our breath. A lot of tough stuff was going on that year and just being able to laugh like that with family was something special.

Thanksgiving

The ceramic pilgrims sounds so cute Nike... I have only been married 2 years and I haven't decided how to decorate during Thanksgiving yet but I like the idea.

Missy Turkey I love Turkey... I can't wait for it..

Margaret I love stuffing too.. Mainly my grandmothers stuffing though umm hers is to good.

Carlobee we all get together too. I have 3 dinners that are going to be spread between the next 2 weeks. The first is Sunday. I can't wait

Jillian I love apple and Cherry pie but they have to be warm.

Dream I can eat Pecan anytime of the year.. Choc chip pecan is my favorite though.

Ellen I don't like pumpkin pie either. I don't like pumpkin anything. I take that back I do like the smell in a candle.

Nancy & Tammy, I don't normally do the parade watch or watch football. I am to into the tree decorating by this time.

Jillian that tradition is amazing.

Kate like Jillian I have never had Buttermilk Pie.

Dream I have the November book already. I just haven't had time to read it. And since I am subscribed to the LI book club please don't put me in for this draw. Thanks.

Linda that sounds amazing.

Nicole I agee that being able to laugh with the family is one of the best parts.

I wanted to say that I am very Thankful for the many blessings the Lord has placed in my life.

Here is what we do on Thanksgiving. We all get together and eat. Once the eating is done and I am back at my house. I decorate for Christmas. I love decorating for Christmas. So this is one of my favorite part of the day. We do go shopping on Black Friday though. I normally go with my aunt and Cousin. We make a girls day out of it.

Turkey trouble anyone?

Hello. Pat Davids here.

I couldn't pass up a chance to tell the story about the time I nearly ruined my family's holiday dinner. I had been away from home for about two years and in that time my parents remodeled the kitchen with a new state of the art stove (for 1972) My old bedroom had been given over to my brother's girlfriend for the holiday and I was sleeping on the sofa. Eveyone went to bed. Some time around four a.m., my mother got up to put the turkey in and then went back to bed. When she turned off the kitchen light, a strange glow filled the kitchen and shone in my face where I was not quite sleeping on the sofa. The oven light was on.

I got up to turn it off, but it was a new stove. I searched and searched for the stupid switch, turning every knob on that brand new stove without finding it. Finally, in frustration, I hung a towel over the oven window and went back to almost sleeping on the sofa. The next morning we all went to church and came home expecting to start our feast. Only I had somehow turned off the oven. We ate very late that Thanksgiving.

Has anyone else had a run-in with a turkey?

Pat Davids

WINNER!!

Linda, please email me at dream.eharlequinhost@gmail.com with your snail mail addy and we'll get your prize off to you.

Sorry I was a little absent this afternoon, I ended up with a phone call from school over a sick kiddo, so you can imagine the fun I've been having! Poor kid threw up in class and is mortified. She's feeling fine now. My challenge is to keep her from eating everything in the house because she's starving.

Linda, I loved your story. What a cool experience!

Pat, too funny!! At least you didn't burn the house down. I was half afraid that one was coming. :)

My best Thanksgiving memory was when I was 8 or 9 years old. I didn't grow up in a Christian home, but I had lots of friends who always took me to church. Somehow I got it in my head that because it's a holiday, it must somehow be about God. Because after all, aren't all holidays about God? Well, I went round and round with my very not Christian family. Finally, I said I'd prove it to them. I got out my aunt's old dusty King James version Bible (and if you've ever read it, you know how hard it is for an 8 or 9 year old) and I searched and searched for a verse about Thanksgiving. And I found Psalm 100:

1Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

2Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

 3Know
ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we
ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

As you can clearly see, it says THANKSGIVING right there... and for me, proof that Thanksgiving was a Jesus holiday. From that year on, so long as I'm at the Thanksgiving table, my family, who has no use for God, gets to hear me pray and recite whatever verses I happen to think appropriate, because yes, friends, Thanksgiving is all about God. :)

To this day, that is my favorite Psalm. And I only seem to be able to enjoy it in the King James Version.

Thanksgiving blessings and traditions

I always spent the holidays with are family, but one year when my 2 cousins were home from Viet Nam war, my mom decided to invite the marines that couldn't go home we had about 10 guys, plus family members. We had the best time, even though our house was crowded, it was the best holiday ever, some of the guys still keep in touch with our family. I help out at a army base and it makes me feel good.

Loving the stories!

Oh, I'm loving all these holiday stories! :)

Dream, I do have to admit I read your post wrong at first. I thought you said they called about your sicko kid!! LOL Then I re-read, relieved it was a sick kiddo instead. Laughing

I love these stories. I do

I love these stories. I do remember one time when I had been married less than ten years fixing the dinner and everything was ready. Or so I thought. I took the turkey out and it was still red inside because our oven went out. The burners worked but not the oven part. Yuck! We had thanksgiving with all the trimmings except the turkey. Cranberry sauce isn't quite as good without turkey.

Undercooking turkey :)

Oh, Margaret! I did that one year. Only I didn't have the excuse of my oven breaking. I just didn't cook it long enough. When I cut in and saw the red juices, I about spazzed. Everything else was ready to eat! So I ended up slicing it, then cooking it in the microwave. :) You know, i think that was the year I did the whole meal by myself for my inlaws. Embarrassing!

Wow, Missy!!

That's brave to microwave it. I'm so paranoid about food poisoning, I'd have stuck it in the oven longer, kept the rest of the food warm, and let everyone have some more munchies. I keep munchies on hand just for that purpose! We've had a few years when the turkey wasn't done on time, but I just let it cook longer!

Carla Capshaw Thanksgiving tradition

Today's mea culpa moment... I didn't fully read an email from Carla about something else, and she'd sent me a Thanksgiving tradition. I was supposed to post it on Friday, and didn't. So I'm so sorry you guys missed out!!

Anyway, here it is...

Thanksgiving blessing:  We always have a big crowd for Thanksgiving
dinner at my house.  Once we all sit down, we go around the table and
everyone has to say something he or she is grateful for.  Each
person has to say something different, so it kind of turns into a game.
People start thinking of their blessing beforehand so we can go
around the table in a timely fashion or else the food gets cold.  :-)

I LOVE this idea! We try to do something similar, though I didn't think of having people think about it beforehand. Anyone else do this at their table?

Thanksgiving Memory

Well, of course, I'd have to contribute a funny moment.  My husband Jeff's relatives have all stayed nearby, and Thanksgiving is their big holiday so one of my first meetings of all his family when we became engaged was Thanksgiving.  We're talking 40+ people here.  After dinner, when Jeff's grandfather made some formal announcement of the engagement, Grandpa calmly informed the crowd that as the wife of the eldest son of the eldest son, it was now my duty to bear the Pleiter family Heir!  I didn't have the heart to tell him he was talking to the wrong set of chromosomes (dad's genes select the baby's gender, if you didn't know), and I was so shocked that he'd commissioned a son like that in front of all these people I hardly knew, that I just gulped and nodded.  We gave my son his great-grandfather's name as a middle name...it seemed like the right thing to do!  You won't be surprised that even though our son is now the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son, we are NOT continuing the practice...NO ONE will commission his future wife like that one day around my Thanksgiving table!

Any way here's my funny???????  I was at my sister-in-law's parents house for Thanksgiving and her niece who was around 5 years old was to say the blessing which she did a very good job of until she got to the last "request".  The request was for God to change the cooked carrots(which she did not like) into green peas (which she liked).

Thanksgiving

Ellen - you're story was cute and funny.  My story is mean/funny.  My Dad and Step-mother hosted Thanksgiving one year.  They cooked the turkey and my husband and I brought pies.  My step-brother and his wife brought flowers and wine.  We had a very nice meal and then afterwards while I was doing the dishes, my step-mother starts packing up all the leftover food and gives it all to her son and his wife.  No leftovers for my husband or me.  (she even gave her son the leftover pie we brought)   We were floored.  I didn't even know what to say, I was shocked and I thought it was funny.   (not in a ha ha way)
