Search function seems to hang ...
the search works ... however, it usually freezes up my browser window for a bit .... sometimes for as much as a minute plus
it does work wonderfully though once it resumes
I'm using WinXP, IE7

What is the purpose of "favorites?"
What is the purpose of "favorites?" When using them, you get brought to the beginning of the posts for that topic instead of just the "new" ones. That is annoying. It is diffiuclt to find where you left off. Unless this is fixed there is no point in using "favorites."
HI Vio .... and Jayne, some thoughts .....
Hi Vio ..... that's a glitch the techs have been working on and seem to be having a great deal of problems with
Jayne .... until they get that fixed, is there any way to get the post numbers displayed beside the time stamp ..... it's really hard to find the spot where you left off in a discussion if the next time you get back to it there are 40 unread posts .... if you click on the "40 new posts" it takes you to the beginning of the the thread, which is frustrating, but the red "new" doesn't display on the new posts, so you can't find which one was the last you read unless you go to the end of the thread and then count backwards
if we had a counter on each thread, (like the old board) then we at least would have that number as a referrence for the next time we visit a discussion
or is make it possible to search a discussion by date range ... you know how our personal blogs on the old site had the calendar we could click on to go to that day's posts ..... could we have that here with the discussions? ..... is this perhaps the work around to fix the threads
also, I wanted to mention that the "search" function is still freezing up my computer while it does it's search ... frustrating because I can't even access other tabs while I'm waiting for the search to do it's thing

I have a tire kick! As
I have a tire kick! As mentioned above, it's tedious to find where to start reading in a topic. But the real "kicker" is that it *is* working on the "Book Challenge" forum. For example, if I'm on the Book Challenge Forum and I click on the "11 new" under a topic, it takes me to the proper page (page 6 in this case) and has those cute red new markers to show me where to read. But if I am at the "Steeple Hill" forum, and I click on "13 new", it takes me to page and post number 1, so I have to click on "last" and find my spot, except sometimes my spot is on the next to last page--you get the idea.
I guess it is extra frustrating 'coz I know it's working correctly on the "Book Challenge" Forum but not on others.
Thanks!

Hmmm, Barbara .......
if a discussion thread or blog entry has less than 50 entries, and you click on "11 new" it will take you to the newest entry ..... if a blog or discussion thread is more than 50 entries, than it takes you to the very first entry of the discussion
this is a glitch in the system ..... Jayne purposely increased the limit to 50 entries so that the "new" function would work on more threads .... I'm not sure, but I think 50 is the max. that can be set per page .... so it's still a site wide glitch, that if a discussion if more than one page in length you will always be taken to the beginning of the discussion ... hopefully they will have it fixed soon

Hi Jayne ......
on the old site we could have a list of "favourite links" on our individual blogs .... the way it was set up we put in the url and the title we wanted to use for the link ... it was the title that appeared in our list
here, on our profile page, under "blog roll" we can sort of do the same .... but we can't give the url a title ... it's the entire url that appears in the list ....... is there anyway to have it set like the old site ?
I'd like to use that section like my web browser bookmarks .... I want to click on a member's "most recent blog posts" and save that url under their name in the "blog roll" .... that way I can create my own list of individual eHarl blogs ..... similar to the list of members blogs we had in the "Book Challenge" folder ...
I know I can save their blog url's now .. but the length of the url is unattractive and the url doesn't give the member's name for identification ....
can this be done? .... isn't this another one of those options that can be switched on or off?
thanks!
PS .... btw, some techie with alot of free time could actually build a section to the "Blog" page with a list of all the members blogs using the method I just suggested ..... it could be done in a drop down where all one had to do is scroll the list and click on a member's id ... and there could be a section in the list for the teams too (using the tag urls) .... just a thought!

Actually, try the "book challenge" forums. They don't have this glitch, really! I click on "11new" and it takes me right to page 9 with cute red "new" markers. Since that and "steeple hill" are the 2 main forums I look at, I figured it was an issue with "steeple hill". But I guess perhaps "book challenge" gets perks. Wonder why it works there and not elsewhere?

Barbara ....
I don't presently have any "new" entries to view in the Book Challenge forums ...... or do you mean the Book Challenge reviews?
can you be more specific? ... or better yet, make a short "testing testing" post on the discussion that seems to work .... that way I'll see a "new" and be able to click on it and see what you mean
thanks!

Actually if you go to Forums
Actually if you go to Forums and click on the NEW under each thread it does take you to the new posts.

no wonder I don't see them. when clicking on a forum in favorites it takes me to the beginning and there aren't any red "new"

christa--I think you explained it to me. When I look at the Steeple Hill stuff, I get there through "favorites" When I look at Book Challenge, I get there through the forum itself. For a test I just went to a Steeple Hill forum via the forum instead of "favorites" and it took me to the correct page complete with the cute red "new". Thanks!

Thanks Barbara .....
I see what you mean ..... this is how you got there, in case others want to do that too
using the "Forum" ---> "Book Challenge" ---> and then clicking on the "1 new" for a discussion it will take you to that "new" comment or the first new comment if there are more than one ....... this actually works for all the discussion forums where there are "new" comments ... but you must go through the "Forum" section in order for this to work
so no matter how you get to the discussion you want, it's still several clicks away (there is not quick click) ..... but at least going through the "Forums" will get you to the "new" spot

Search Function
I know I've posted this already but this is really frustrating
I'm using WinXP, Internet Explorer 7 ..... when I attempt to use the "search" at the top right, the function freezes up my browser while it's conducting it's search ...... this is extrememly frustrating because I cannot even access my other tabs or windows .... this is happening on all of my computers
can someone look into this please? ... I love the new search but if it's going to lock up my computer for several minutes (sometimes more than 5 min) I'll probably not use it
thanks!

Katherine T -- I just gave
Katherine T -- I just gave the "Community search" you mention a try and it works very quickly (as in just a few seconds) for me. I'm also using XP but I'm using Firefox, not IE. Just thought I'd add that to the information mix.

Thanks Barbara .....
so then it must be an IE7 issue ...... sadly I'm not about to change to firefox ... I have work related sites that I can only access using IE, and it's just too confusing right now for me to work with two browsers
so techies ... please turn off your Firefox and turn on your IE7 and see if you can replicate the hang up ... I'd appreciate it very much
I've been searching all morning for a book I'm positive that was reviewed here ... or if not reviewed commented on somewhere .... but the "search" function just hangs everything up .... and as we're now at over 5000 books reviewed it'll take forever to find it
so frustrating!

Diamonds Down Under board
When I try to access this board, I get a note that I'm not authorized to do that, and that I should sign in--but my computer signs me in automatically, so something doesn't make sense here. Help!
I"m not sure I get the problem
Hi Pam,
It's hard to diagnose a problem without being able to look over your shoulder. But if you're posting in this forum, does it mean that your problem has resolved? You can do an easy check to see if you are logged in by looking to see if there's a welcome message in the top right hand corner of your browser window. If it says Welcome yourname! then you're in.

DDU and favourites
I keep getting the access denied message for the DDU thread too
Katherine- what I do (since I'm not real good at counting backwards) is have two windows open. Window 1 to favourites. If there are new messages in Forums I open second window and go to forum with new messages, when clicking new under replies it takes you to last message and new messages show up with the word new

Page advance function ......
Jayne, presently here on the forum discussions the "page numbers, and next / previous" function is enabled for both the top and bottom of the pages ...... is there anyway to get this enabled also for the blogs? .... esp. for the Book Challenge main blog ..... actually if they could turn this on site wide that would be good, that way it would work with the tag pages too .....
this would make it a little easier to move to the last post of a tag, or blog

That's something that I'd asked for way back, but I've been told that it's unfortunately NOT an option in this current release of our Community platform

Diamonds Down Under is gone again. I think somehow it got re-reset to disappear. The IT people need to dig a little deeper--I like the series and I want to post on the forum!
