How about a 50 Something Writers?
20 somethings have a lot of time to get published. Us old folks are facing a faster clock!

It's kinda cute! :) And we'll all get used to it sooner or later!

You guys, I clicked on the eHarl page and had a heart attack! I seriously could not find you guys!!! I freaked, thinking oh god, what else could go wrong and where the heck are the 20 somethings and then, finally found this page...gee, this is rough and is going to take some getting use to. I'm a stickler for my comfort zone, so I may need to pout a bit before I get on with it.

50 Somethings - We're Not Chopped Liver
I agree with you, ChrissieSue. Let's get a 50 something writers forum. We rock too.
Well, if you really feel there's some ageism...
I could scrap ALL the social discussions and say--"Writers Only!: No Matter how firm your butt is!", LOL!
Truth is, the 20 Somethings just beat you here, that's all. And most of them aren't even 20 anymore because they've been here so long, they're 30 somethings now. I like to respect the seniority. :) If the name bothers you that much, there's always "Struggling Writers" to visit. Or you can think of us as a conglomeration of 20 something or other number of folks in here. I don't think we've ever broke 30 in that way.

What's In A Name?
I have to say that I was only 18 when I managed to find my way into this room and now, 6 years later, I can honestly admit it was the name that drew me in. I was looking for people who could relate to my daily struggles: school, homework, stupid boy problems, parents, and all the while trying to get that first novel cranked out. Sure, we, as younger writers might have more time to get published, or maybe we just got started a bit sooner. I think the writing bug hits us when it sees fit, but either way, 6 years later, I can tell you I will always consider this room my "home" on eharl, regardless of how old I get. Yes, as I've gotten a bit older, the problems have changes, but the friendships have not and I think if you're looking for a place to find that and support and hugs when you need them, you've come to the right place. Being young at heart, I suppose, is what the 20somethings are all about.
Much Love (for many years to come),
K.C. :)

I agree, the name is what drew me here. The people I've connected with on Ehar are ALL awesome, but I needed some support from people who understood not being taken seriously because of age... or lack thereof, I suppose?
And the core ladies here are the ones who helped me get going, gave advice, and read my early attempts- couldn't have asked for any better!!!!! And I can't wait to see EVERYONE'S book on the shelves!

I do know that feeling. I've been hosting for almost 7 years now--gads, can you believe it??--and at the time, most of the folks I had to marshal were waaaay older than me. They called me a baby all the time. (It slowed down when they realized I had a delete button, lol).

Dee--I can totally relate to that--it's a fear I get when I realize I'll be teaching students (after I graduate this December) who are only a few years younger than I am lol. Scary!
Kaitlin--You're a horrible, naughty girl lol--I'm soo Just Kidding with you. Take your time, I'm not in a hurry---besides that random gift might seriously make my day when I get it. Thanks for even thinking of me!
Lauren--Yes and I LOVED it lol! Thanks a ton!
So I just got done with my Chaucer class tonight, and let me tell you, I've fluffed myself over pretty good this time. We're reading the Canterbury Tales In Middle English and have to teach ourselves how to pronounce it for our 12 line presentation of it later in the semester. For those of you who don't know what MIddle English sounds or reads like, look it up. I didn't until tonight and let me say, I think Shakespeare might have been a better choice.
Pray for me you guys lol!

KC, I feel your pain. I took an Olde English course once- holy mother. Not even the same alphabet. certainly not the same pronunciation. You know that movie Beowulf? Well, we had to read that IN Olde English, which for those who don't know, might as well be Latin and Japanese combined.
Best of luck with it, it is doable, I swear!

Poor KC...and Lauren
I can't even imagine. It was all I could do to understand Shakespeare when I had to read it.
It sounds like...
Okay, well, if you can imagine a drunk German trying to speak with an exaggerated French accent and elongating all your "o" sounds to mean "ooo" (like a "moo" without the m). It's freaking hilarious when you try to get it all in Iambic Pentameter, which may or may not be the way Chaucer originally intended. If it tells you anything, the word "knight" is pronounced like "k-nichg-t" (sounds like "connect") lol....you will have to look it up and try it for yourselves.
It's gonna be a blast,

middle English
You're in what grade? 12th? Did I miss something? I did that in 11th grade---the educational system must be getting worse, not better.....I thought it was actually very easy, it flows very well, and I still remember the Anglo-Saxon we did too. You can do it, it really is easy!
Beowulf is great too, Anglo-Saxon is just a bit rougher than middle English, but once you get going, it's easy to hear and understand.

Mmm, well I certainly never found it easy.
KC, I'm assuming you're taking a uni level course? I can't imagine what kind of warped high school curriculum would sick that on 17 year olds. I had masters level students in my class who completely flummoxed.
And that was a very good description of the pronunciation, too... I never could get my lips wrapped around the fact that it needed to be pronounced exactly as it looked... shows how much English has changed!

warped high school curriculum
The kind that turns out National Merit Scholars every year. The kind where we go to college already knowing how to write an essay, how to do a term paper, and don't need to waste class time with a professor telling us something we learned in middle school. If you had MA students who didn't know their stuff, I wonder how they managed to get into graduate school to begin with.
And the US wonders why foreign countries outdo us? I don't, my limited experience in public school where they were learning things I had learned several years before told me all I needed to know as to why American students are failing, it has little to do with money and everything to do with low standards.

I'm not sure
I'm still skipping between stories the way I do after I finish something. But I'm thinking about a romantic suspense with characters who are on the opposite sides of the law.
hmm
Congrats on being lucky enough to go to that kind of school. I graduated with a 3.8 gpa at a private school where the top 10 students in my class of 38 had 4.0's or higher and I was 12th. I also played 2 varsity sports all 4 years as a starter, was homecoming queen, had 11 years of tap, jazz, ballet and pointe lessons, and lived an hour away from my school the whole 4 years. I don't mean to get a bit defensive, but just because someone (in this case, me) has trouble with the Middle English that I had a brief lesson in nearly 7 years ago (in 11th grade), doesn't mean they are stupid. It means they might also be busy working a full time job, taking a full course load at a university and trying to salvage a social life and time to write, all the while living 11 hours from the only family and friends they know. I'm not asking for sympathy, I made these choices and stand by them, but I don't think it's appropriate to down someone because they have a bit of trouble with a language that is no longer spoken, really, anywhere on the face of the planet. At least, that I know of. If that wasn't your intention, I apologize, that's just the way the post came off.
To answer your question, Lauren, I'm working on cp'ing for amber and sally (both of whom will have mail sometime Sunday) and writing a bit on a new wip.

Huh....
I don't know who that person is who is basically attacking you, KC, but whatever. I'm a very smart person who doesn't like to read anything that's enough to give a person a headache. Doesn't mean I can't read.
Oh, my brain hurts. What a day. As for the question of what I'm working on...I'm not sure yet. I had this idea hit me awhile back and now that I can write again (yay!), but it's cool. It's in first person though, so that's been kind of a brain stretcher. I don't usually write that way. It's kind of fun though. I feel like I'm writing a journal, but in a cool way.
Anyone have fun plans for the weekend? I plan on sleeping...a lot. Anyone who's read my blog knows this week has been a complete joke, so I really need to recharge my batteries, both physically & emotionally.
Have a great weekend everyone!

I don't like the fact that I have to scroll through posts I've already read to get to the new stuff. That's gonna get real old when we're on page seventeen. But otherwise I'm getting used to it.
oh to sleep in :)
Yeah, Kaitlin, I'd love to be able to recharge but I have to work today (from 9 to 12) so I got up at 6:30 to hit the gym for an hour before work. This, all this, after a crappy night in which the bf wanted my little dog to come over and let it sleep in the bed between us. So instead of me getting to snuggle, the dog got to snuggle with the bf while I had my back facing them, eyes to the wall. I was soo pissed lol and he was like "you're so whiny tonight"...hmmm maybe because I had envisioned spending my Friday night with a little something ELSE in mind than sleeping with my dog in my back. Argh. At least it's not happening tonight. Plan on it :) lol.
Hope everyone else is having a great day. And Amber I agree about the scrolling, but I'm sure they're working on it ;).
Much Love,
K.C.
Dogs in Bed
I can't stand sleeping with dogs. I've had to do it a couple of times when taking care of my brother's dogs, but I hate it. They never stay asleep, they're always snuffling in my ear (or licking me) and I can never stay in deep sleep. Drives me batty.
Splurged a bit yesterday & bought some books! I know, it's shocking. LOL! I bought The Demon You Know by Christine Warren, a book by Suzanne Enoch, Prince of Magic by Linda Winstead Jones, and Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.
LoS was sooooo good! I'm not a huge fan of historicals (except for Lisa Kleypas), but I'd heard so many things about that book I had to try it. There were some points I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. Sexy and fun read.
Today I plan on being a lazy slug. I've got to do some cleaning and such, but after that I don't plan on doing much of anything. I plan to watch North and South...again. Yummy Richard Armitage. *sigh* Sexy, sexy, sexy. He's the guy plastered all over my blog.

Hey, I'm 22 and trying to
Hey, I'm 22 and trying to break in,sadly every story I read about writers who make it almost always seems to happen nearly ten years after they first started writing, so I have a ways to go.
I saw that some people didn't like the new layout, and I've been mostly lurking for the past few years and I think it's cute too. Was a little confused about where everything went, but after surfing for a few minutes found that everything was all neatly tide up in folders
Welcome Rosko. I admit
Welcome Rosko. I admit that I'm not published yet and I've been writing seventeen years. However, up until January of 2007 I never really tried to publish anything so I'm not sure that counts.
I hope that you decide to come back and actually delurk in the next bit. :)
Thanks Rosko!
I'm an organization freak. Having stuff in folders is nice. Also, everything would be everywhere at the bottom of the page and I'd have to shoot myself with Prozac just to visit every day if that had happened.
Wish I could make you feel better on the amount of time to pub. It took me 8 years--with a diff pub--and I'm on year 10 trying to crack HQ. But I know lots of people who've done it in less time. LOTS less time. It's really on the quality of your work and how hard you're willing to work and, truly, sometimes just luck on the timing. The most brilliant books can be passed up because they had one too close to it just get bought. So, don't lose hope!

Well, I must admit a sin
Well, I must admit a sin now too, While I always did send my novels out, the first novels I'd ever written I'd send them off to a publisher or two, wait for a rejection, and then stop sending them out. Looking back at them though, I realize that was probably the best choice as they really are unpublishable.
I have also heard of writers who would write their first novels, have only one or two drafts, and then they would be published, and my teacher in Romance Writing class warned us about books that might be similar to ours as a cause for rejections.
The good news is that I'm learning that I need to have more than one draft of a story, and am on the second draft of my book right now and still don't hate it yet. In fact I think I like doing second drafts better than the first
Go figure.
While we are on the subject...
Yeah, I've been writing seriously for about 5 years and have yet to even submit anything, which as of this moment, is going to change. You guys have inspired me :) and I needed it. Any help or ideas ya'll could pitch my way on where in the world to start this process would be greatly appreciated.
And a nice to see a new face on the thread. Sometimes I forget there are lurkers and I wonder exactly what they think of me lol...scary huh.

Thanks!

I decided to treat myself & bought a new MP3 player. I've never had one & felt that it would do me good to get something to listen to while writing. It's really, really clear. Yay!
I went & bought a bunch of music from walmart.com. I know, walmart sucks, but their mp3's are really cheap, but really good quality. I'm enjoying myself. he-he

And Rosko- it's not always so slow. I just got my first MP3 player too about a week ago and I love it.
I got most of my downloads from Wal Mart too because they wanted less from me as far as info and stuff and I don't have to be a member of anything. They didn't have some of the popular new stuff I wanted like Sexy Back and Love Stoned but they had some obscure Ella and Frankie songs that I wanted. Go figure.
