Do You Blush?

Do you have plans to write for Blaze's new sub-series, "Blush"? Curious about this lighter side of the passionate line? What's welcome, what's not? Discuss what you're expecting from Blush!

I love Blaze and Blush!

Just a second, I gotta twirl my skirt in this fancy new wide-open space!  I can't believe I'm the first one here!

Okay, thanks for indulging me.  Yes, ahem, Blaze Blush.  I'm totally in favor of them.  Laughing

Yep!

I didn't even realize it was different from the regular line, but I loved Jill Monroe's Primal Instincts. I miss Temptation so much. This seems a little closer to those books.

Blush fanatic!

Love, love, LOVE Blush. I read romance to escape the drama and negativity in everyday life, so if a book has a storyline I could find on CNN, I'm usually not interested in reading it. I am so glad the folks at Blaze decided to bring back the lighthearted, classic (and extra hot, of course!) romance. I could read and write these for the rest of my life and be happy. Laughing

I'm with the Temptation lovers...

when I first heard about this line, I about wept with happy. I love quippy characters and a good laugh.

So...what kind of light toned romance do you want in your Blush? Would you read commystery? What will you do to make sure Blush is around for good?

what kinds?

commystery would definitely be a big hit with me. In Monroe's last book I loved the fun feel especially in the secondary romance!

Blush Rocks

I was so thrilled to hear Blaze was going Blush - I really miss Temptation.  I was even more thrilled when my editor slated my January release as a Blush.  It had a fun, dream-come-true, feel LOL

I can't wait to see where Blush goes!

I might blush...

I have loved the Blushes out so far (especially yours, Tawny, my Cigars sister, LOL).

I haven't done too much that was "light" -- About Last Night was probably my lightest book, but I had an idea while walking my dogs last month, popped it off to my editor, and thought it sounded like a Blush. She agreed, and I have an okay on the synopsis, and still need to do pages, but I'm really looking forward to it! It's a fun story, and will give me a chance to experiment and stretch some new writing muscles! It has a mini-mystery/suspense plot, but very light.

Fun!

Sam, I'd love to see what you do with a Blush :-)  It sounds like a fun story!  I was so hooked on Temptations for the light, sassy tone and am really excited to not only see Blaze offer Blush, but to see what kind of stories are getting that cute pink dot.

I'm really curious too...

I totally cried when Temptations ended. Now I'm thinking my penchant for smart alecks will finally be soothed! Wheee!

Sam writing a Tempty Blaze. THAT is soooo doable.

Confession...

Actually, I never read too many Temptations, mostly because I was in school all those years when they were popular, and I wasn't reading romance at all for a span from about 25-38, and when I came back to it, it was all ST and Blaze. Blaze had a considerably darker and more intense sort of tone early on and I was attracted to that, but there is a part of me that really likes playing with humor and lighter storylines, so I'm thinking this will be fun...

Unholy gasp!!!

You missed out on Temptations?? Oh, Sam! *schniff* That's like saying you missed out on Chocolate!

That's okay. Blush is here to save you, lol.

I did read a few

Mostly Cara Summers, who I know from my teaching days... I found out she was a romance author and read all of her books. :) A few others, though I don't recall. I do remember enjoying the stories about "magic skirts" and "magic beds" etc and my book picks up on a similar premise...

So, I did read some, and I think Blush probably picks up the tone, but has more of a sexier edge?

I bet you will *G*

I read two, Tawny's and Jill's, and enjoyed them both, though they had very different takes, and I don't think the books were too far off of their normal writing voices, IMO.

I am thrilled about "Blush" .....

when I found out that Leslie Kelly's "The Last Temptation" was literally the last Temptation, I cried .... yep cried   ....... even though I knew that many of my favourite Temp authors would be writing for Blaze, it just wasn't the same ..... Blaze is longer format, and as Sam said the first ones were darker, edgier  ... don't get me wrong, I love the Blaze imprint, but there was just something so sassy about the Temptations ... and a truly wonderful group of authors

so I'm thrilled to bits and bits that there's Blush  ... and that's a great name for the theme

So for those of us who do

So for those of us who do not have a long history of reading romance or don't typically subscribe/buy tons of Blazes (and have not read Temptation)...what will we find in BLush as compared to Blaze as a whole?

Well, if I'm understanding right...

Blush will be a return to those "frisky" stories. You're not going to find a dark romance or an edgy pair of characters who are facing life and death unless they do it with a touch of lightness, I beileve.

Hope that helps!

Blush Worthy

That's how I understood the Blush line -- lighter in tone, more "fun" in terms of topic/scenarious.  I had the tremendous opportunity to pitch my MS to an editor for the Blaze line last year not even knowing the Blush line was in planning, and that's exactly where they said it sounded like it fit.  I submitted and am waiting to hear, but I'd love to be able to slide into the Blaze line with Blush.  I'm a sucker for quirky and fun and banter.  Love the banter!  I alays felt like (with the death of Temptation) that my style and tone and voice were just too light for Blaze and way too OT for Desire.  I felt like an author without a home, so Blush gave me hope that I might fit in after all.  {fingers crossed}

Jewel

That's great! How long has it been since you subbed?

I guess the only thing I'd add is that Blush (as far as I know) is like Extreme, Forbidden Fantasy, etc -- you write one here and there, but not as the only thing you write for the line. However, I also think there is plenty of room for light, fun voices in Blaze in general -- there's no reason you wouldn't fit in anyway. Cara Summers has been doing that for years, not as Blush, but she came over from Tempts and her voice has stayed in that fun, light range, even in regular Blaze.

So maybe it's not so much a voice issue as a plot/character one that makes Blush Blush? I mean, my voice is not really light, and I don't know that I could make it be light, but I can write a plot that has lighter elements, etc.

Sam...

I submitted right after the RWA Conference last July and called Blaze several months later to check on the status simply because I hadn't heard back.  Nasty visions of the MS disappearing into the Postal Void of Doom.  So I know it's there on somebody's desk.  LOL.  I've got my fingers crossed that I'll hear something 0 one way or the other -- soon.

And yeah, that's my understanding about the Blaze and sublines too -- lots of room for lots of voices and tones, but the Blush especially tends toward the "Temptation" tendencies, but I think the Blush subline was a really good fit for the story.  Hopefully the editors will agree.

I think what makes a Blush "Blush" is a combination of things like you suggested.  Definitely tone and voice, but plot as well, how you execute it, where the focus is, the hooks, etc.  It's a combination of elements.  Temptation and Blaze really were, imo, just natural stemmings off of each other.  I was just thrilled during my talk with the editor that I had an acurate grasp of the hooks, the line, what they were looking for, etc.  It was a great conversation and we had a lot of similar ideas.  :)

 JT

That's my understanding, too

about Blush picking up some of the fun/flirty/quirky stuff. Seems to me there's a void in the lines right now as far as those tings go, ever since they took away Flipsides (I'm still grieving those)

Blush

I think there's room in Blaze, even in the non-Blush books, for "fun and flirty." My next two are very light, simple  straightforward funny romances between two very light-and-normal people. They are Wrong Bed books, which was my favorite miniseries in Temptation, which was probably why I went for the joke whenever I had the chance.

I like writing Blaze...but Temptation was my heart,

Hey Leslie

Yeah, that was my point about Cara, too (She was Tempts, also)  -- there have been a lot of fun, lighter Blazes. I guess that makes me wonder what makes Blush "Blush"?

I pitched mine that way because it was really different than the stuff I usually write -- more whimisical, I guess, than my usual stories.

Well now I'm curious

What DOES make a Blush a Blush in the Blaze line?  Though it's nice to know that people see more "lighter" tone in the Blaze line period.  I worry about that sometimes.  I mean, I can angst and write darker with the best of them, but sometimes I love a good lighter, funnier story.  I tend to do that a lot with my dialogue.  No matter how bleak the moment... a line always finds its way in there to make you laugh or smile a little.

JT

Well...

I guess it comes down to Brenda Chin's final approval. Blaze can go anywhere, but only those special, light-hearted but still blazing romances can be a Blush.

I'm still planning to aim for it!

where may I find Blush info?

besides here, I mean. I've been looking for guidlines about it and can't seem to find any.Embarassed i think i'm tending to be more of a Blush than Blaze writer from all the commentary thus far.

thanks.

:)

Writer2B, it does get confusing, but Blush is Blaze -- everything you find in Blaze, you find in Blush. So, you kind of have to be a Blaze writer to be a Blush writer.

Blush is just a subline of Blaze -- so like Extreme, Foribidden Fantasy, Adrenaline Rush, etc they are all still Blaze -- just with elements or tone that make them a little something different than the main line books. You would be a Blaze writer who writes an ocassional Blush, not so much a "Blush writer" -- hope that makes some sense! :)

Believe me, everyone went through the same confusions when they came out with Extreme, Forbidden Fantasy, etc -- the best thing I can think of is don't write for Blush - write for Blaze, and let the editors decide if it's a Blush or not...or an Extreme or whatever... Pubbed authors have a different dynamic, because we can go into a book knowing it's an Extreme or a Blush, because we discuss that with eds ahead of time -- for unpubbed writers, I would say just write the best Blaze you can and see what happens! :)
