Big Finish 2 Contest!
Are you an aspiring author? Now is your chance to shine! Read the following scene, then write The Big Finish in 2,500–3,000 words. Let your imagination carry you away. What is going on and what will happen next? What is the relationship between the characters—are they estranged lovers or complete strangers? Are they even the hero and heroine of the story? Is this a historical romance? Romantic suspense? Contemporary romance? You decide. And remember: originality counts!

Oooooh! A new contest!!!!
I'm so excited! I logged in today, hoping to find a round robin or something like that (it is, after all, a Wednesday!! -- call me Pavlov's contest junkie!!) and I found this.
I'm going to have to roll this around in my head a bit, but I can already see several possibilities.

Big Finish 2
I am glad that I checked this site again. I am entering the contest, this time with more smarts...I hope.
Good luck to all that enter.

let's talk strategy
Okay, so I wrote my entry and then went back and read the winning entries from the last Big Finish. I noticed the Grand Prize winner was kinda chick lit in style. My story is chick lit, too. Do you think that puts me at a disadvantage? (assuming they want to spread the love between the genres) Or am I way overthinking it?
Hmmm, Olivia, I don't know...
I guess I'd say that if you've written the piece the way you think it should be, then I'd go for it as is and not worry about it! (This said by the woman who generally writes TWO and then can't decide which to send!!!)
I have ideas, but I still haven't committed them to paper (er, computer!) Good job for getting it done so quickly!!
Hi Austin! Good luck to you, too!! Are you done yet? Or still working on it?

Dee, a question for you...
does the 2,500-3,000 words include the scene itself? Or is that word count OUR words only? Also, when I submit it,do I submit it with the starter scene AND my scene?
Thanks!

Hey Jodie!
Well, it says write the scene in 2500-3000, so, that should mean the word count is your words.
Also, they know the portion they put up, you can choose either, if you like, but I'd make it very clear where your portion begins. :) Perhaps with a ... at the end of the portion and then start a new para for your section. Or the provided portion in bold or italics. That kind of thing.
Hope that helps!

OK, one more question, Dee...
(You know me, queen of questions!) This is PG-13, right? We can't take it, say, Blaze level, right? Thx!

I've started one...
Wrote 2 or 300 words right away, then had to go to sleep... I haven't gotten back to it yet, but I did make a note to myself about who the three characters are and how they relate to each other. I looked at the deadline and panicked. Then I realized it said February 20th, not January.
Whew.
(Panic first; ask questions later... tee hee.)

now that you mention it...
I confess, mine is definitely headed in a Blaze direction, but with only 3,000 words to play with, I was able to rein them in (just barely--had to cut to those dread *** to keep it clean!). But with an opening like that, they were running pretty hot from the gate
No worries, Jodie...
There's no heat limit. Only on Community do you have to specifically worry about PG-13. Site run contests have editors, so if you go too far, they'll rein you back in. :)

Having just come off finishing my Spice Brief, I'm thinkin' in a totally different way these days!!! :-) I may have to "Spice" it up!! (Or, at the very least, Blaze it up!)

Quick question---
Since this is going to editors rather than being submitted on-line, do standard editorial practices apply? I.e., underlining for italics rather than simply typing italics? I was just typing italics, and then I remembered seeing that this is going to the editors. I looked in the rules and couldn't find anything addressing it, so I thought I'd ask here. Thanks!
"Never say you will pray about a thing; pray about it." Oswald Chambers
The Hope Chest ||| Hope Chastain, writer's blog
I never even knew that!
I never heard anything about underlining for italics instead of using italics! I type everything the way it would normally appear. That whole switcharoo bit sounds like craziness to me
. Now we know why I'm still unpublished
Hope, I've asked about that before...
and while it's still considered standard, editors don't mind if you've italicized your text or underlined it. Either one works for them, particularly on submissions. So, your preference!

Still Writing
Thanks for asking Jodie. I am still working on this but hope to finish in a couple of days. I entered the first contest and hope that I learned enough to place in this one. I enjoy writing enough to want to grow with it. Good luck to all that enters this contest.

Thanks, Dee!
That will make it easier!
Olivia, underlining to make italics is VERY old-school, dating back into the early 20th century at least, and possibly the 19th...(I'd have to do research to find out for certain when italics became available in printing). It dates back to typewriters, which, of course, only had one font (known as a typeface), either Pica or Elite. Pica was 12 point, and Elite 10, which were referred to as Pica 10 and Elite 12. Now you're probably really confused!
However, Pica was 10 characters per inch and Elite 12. Editors always preferred Pica, not only for ease of reading, but for estimating word count.
Now that we have computers with dozens of fonts, the standard is either Courier (or Courier New), which looks like Pica, or Times New Roman, which looks like Elite, but still is slightly larger than Elite was.
And that concludes the history of typewritten manuscripts for today. Be ready for the pop quiz later in the week.
(LOL. Just kidding!)

Yes, my head is spinning
Hope,
Wow, that is a lot of font info. I usually use Times New Roman. Can't stand Courier (there's never room to say anything). But just between you and me, when I'm on my own and nobody's looking, I have a secret thing with Garamond!
BTW, isn't Pica also a name for a disorder in which people eat non-food items? Hmm...maybe that's why I have such an aversion to Courier...
LOL!
Actually, it is. Pica is what those kids who eat dirt and rocks is called. It's a mineral deficiency that leads them down that road. :)
Oh, also, the standard is more than the font. It's the size. Courier 12 and TNR 14 are roughly the same size. :) Again, eds don't care what font you use as long as it's easily read and easy on the eyes. With the advent of computer count, they don't need the old standards, but they're always a good idea. :)
Hugs,

On geophagy...
Didn't realize that was what the disorder resulting in a person's becoming a geophage was called! Ick!
LOL
There's also a little critter, member of the genus Rodentia, called a Pika.... (Actually, they're kind of cute, like a hamster.)
And now we all know more than we want to about Pica.
I had thought TNR 14 was about the same size as C 12, but usually they say to submit in TNR 12, also... so I don't know. I like Garamond, too. Another favorite for older-looking styles is Bookman.

It's been TNR 14 for as long as I've been around...
which is probably too long, lol. I know my own editor--for the other pub--switches my books to Bookman. It's a font I don't have, lol. It sure looks nice and is definitely acceptable. Couldn't tell you the size, though. :)

Whew! I did it.
Okay, there, it's done, it's sent, it's in someone else's hands now (unless it got lost!)
I read over my entry and decided, imperfect though it may be, I don't know how to make it any better (not without exceeding the word limit, LOL). So I up and sent it in!!!
Has anyone else entered yet?
Thanks, Dee!
I'll make the adjustment to my mss.
Olivia, yay on submitting already! Mine isn't finished yet. I had to do a little research before I could carry on with the story. I should be able to get it done before the deadline, though (I hope!).

Just finished my story!
3000 words on the nose, LOL! I'm going to try to shrink it the tiniest bit, though. I was having such a rough time coming up with an angle to this that I thought about skipping it. Then, one morning, I was in the shower and....voila! I started typing as soon as I could. PHEW!!!
Hope...I'm sure you'll get it finished!
And Olivia, good for you for sending it in! Your post was one of the the sparks, I think, that set my muse free. So thank you. :-)
Austin, how goes the story?
And Dee....really? TNR 14? I always thought TNR 12. Oops. My bad! Thanks for the info. BTW...I thought I was *so* going the Blaze/Spice route for this contest...nope. Go figure!!!

Congrats on finishing, Jodie, and good luck with the contest! I get a lot of my best ideas in the shower, too--that and doing laundry. I always say, anyone who suffers from writer's block is clearly not doing enough laundry. They can come on over to my place--nine loads today! LOL!
Yup!
But, mind you, that only meant something so they could average 250 words per page. Now, with computer count, 2 pts ain't gonna make or break your word count. :) So, no harm, no foul, right?
Oh, I tend to get my best ideas when there's no paper and no hope of reaching any. Which reminds me! Oooh, I had a scene idea!!!

And LOL, Olivia. Laundry...yeah, that's a good "physically busy, mind free" task!! Although I can't imagine 9 loads. UGH! And hey...if you're interested, there's a new challenge up on the Writer's Challenge thread...take a peek! 1000 words, so it's pretty easy. No prizes but it's fun!

Glad you finished & got that in! I'm still working on mine intermittently...where does time go so quickly, anyway?
These last three days have been filled to the brim with activity, and I haven't had a minute to write anything, not even my NaNo book which I want to finish and get critted before the RWA conference, if I can...

Only ten days left to enter!
With only ten days left to enter, I keep checking back here to see if anyone's posted anything new. There must be people who enter without telling any of us first. Otherwise, I only count the four of us, and with three winners, well, let's just say I'll feel really bad if I'm the only one who doesn't make the cut!
So if you're quietly peeping in here, speak up! It'll make me feel a lot better about the results...
Finished- The Big Finish 2
I finished my entry last night. I should say in the wee hours of the morning. This was more fun this time. I just relaxed and let er rip.
Good luck to all who enters.

Curious
I'm wondering how many folks entered the first contest?
And, I think it would be great to get feedback on your story. This is not probably going to happen because of the volume of entries.

I know many contests have hundreds of entries, and we always wondered where those folks came from. :)

I love these
Dee - is there any way opportunities like this can be communicated on multiple boards? Maybe I just totally overlooked it (that happens more often than I would like to admit), but typically there seems to be a lot more post activity when these contests are underway.

A couple of Questions
Okay, I sent in the short but it left me thinking. This short stops, I think at a convenient place, but needs to go on. Will I be penalized for readers knowing that there must be more?
Also, will I get an acknowledgement that the story was received?
Anxious.
R. Austin Meacham
Hi, Austin!
I imagine if the writing is good, that will count for more than the idea that there is still more of the story left to be told. (I don't know for certain, though!) Also, I don't remember getting an acknowledgement from last year's Big Finish Contest, so you probably won't. However, if you don't get an "undeliverable" message back in your inbox or junk mail folder, you can probably assume it got there safely and is being read! They will read everything, bless them! I imagine they're going to see all kinds of Harlequin-style stories this go-round!

Good point. No non deliverable message, so I will assume it made the trip, now if it doesn't wind up in the slush pile.
It would be interesting to read all of the entries. I know I would learn something from everyone.
R. Austin Meacham
Oh, Hope, our on-site font expert
Hope,
Okay, I decided to bow down and switch all my writing to Courier (wince). Now I'm having trouble with my dashes. When you make a dash in Times New Roman, you hit the hyphen button twice with no spaces on either side, and it makes a nice long dash.
But when I switched my manuscript over to Courier, all the dashes look a lot like a hyphen. Personally, I think it's distracting, because every time I come to one as I'm reading along, I have to stop and think about which it really is. I saw a submission sample here on Harlequin that looked almost as though there were spaces on either side of the dash. My trusty old style-guide says this is a no-no, but my instinct tells me to err on the side of clarity.
Any insights? thanks a bunch!
LOL & blushing
I went ahead and sent mine in Times New Roman 14. It looks a little big, but it's easy on the eyes. I would definitely just do three dashes---no space between words unless the next word is the beginning of another sentence--- Like this. It should look something like that even in Courier &/or Courier New. The thing about Courier compared with TNR & other fonts is that it is more "typewriterly" (which I know is not an official word, although it should be). It won't automatically form nice dashes and it probably won't automatically form tiny fractions (e.g. 1/2), either. However, it does have a good old-school appearance. Hope this helps!
Good thing I'm not a guy, or by now you'd probably be calling me Little Lord Fontleroy!
Austin, last year some of us shared our entries with each other by e-mail, but I can't remember whether that was The Big Finish contest or one of the others...
