DESIRE EDITOR PITCH CHALLENGE
We're at it again! And this time, we've got another of your favorite lines for you to send your sassy, steamy entries to! Desire is looking for YOUR manuscript and Editor Diana Ventimiglia will be on hand to take your pitch!
To enter, send a 1 to 2 line logline of your manuscript to Hosty Rae by June 30th.
Five entries will be chosen by Diana and those will be announced July 3rd.
Pitches will happen July 15th, at 10 am EST. But read the rules below to ensure your entry can be accepted.
• You MUST be able to enter and post inside the eHarlequin.com chat room. If you are unable to use the chat room and your submission is chosen, we will be unable to offer you another venue option and it will be unfair to an entrant who is able.
• You MUST have a completed manuscript that is targeted to Desire. Editors have the option to request partials or fulls but aren't accepting across the board.
• You MUST be available at the given chat time. As stated above, we will be unable to offer another venue or time option.
• Please include your member name, your full name along with your submission.
Logline Specifications
Challenge Specifics: This challenge is 1 or 2 lines (as written by the author, please gramatically ensure the sentences do not run-on in order to fit more in.). This should not look like a large paragraph.
Challenge Description: A logline is a 1 or 2 line description of your ENTIRE ms, primarily what marketing hooks each ms might have (ie: Beauty & The Boss, Cowboy Lover, Pregnant Bride) but it's more than that. You will need to lay out the hooks, the conflicts, the characters and the plot premise concisely.
In a query, it would go at the top of the letter, for a pitch, it might be all you use, and you have a better chance of getting editorial attention if you know this skill well because they now have a speedy way of discerning what you're trying to do in the story.
Also loglines help keep the query pages short and you can be more expanisive in the synop. (I've also found that if you put it all into those two lines, you now have a small thesis statement from which to build the synop itself.)
EX
When pregnant Lindsay Lawson is left at the altar, no one is more suprised than Hank Handler, the man she works for, that he steps in as the role of the groom. But is the handsome, quiet rancher there to help her save face...or does it have something to do with the long-standing rivalry between their families?

Am I first?
This is a great opportunity. Thanks Diana, MJ and Harlequin/Silhouette for the chance to pitch to Desire.

Yea!
Yea! Finally we have details. I know that we've known about this for a while, but now that it's on the boards I'm nervous that I can't pull it all together.

Wow...
This is a challenge I can sink my teeth into. My only question is whether the challenge is open to those who have manuscripts that are currently being evaluated by a Harl editor? My ms is not in the Desire line, but in SSE. Would submitting another ms be a conflict of interest?

Amanda, Is the other
Amanda,
Is the other editor working with you right now?
Rae
Actually, Rae, Mr. Griemsman
Actually, Rae, Mr. Griemsman requested my partial ms after I queried. But he and I haven't had any actual communication other than his letter. I'm still just waiting.

Amanda
Then, I'd said as long as this is a completely different m/ss and as long as Mr. Greimsman doesn't contact you between now and when the pitch happens, that I don't see why not.
Rae
Cool challenge!
Hi Rae -- thanks for the information! I'm so excited by this opportunity!
Can we enter more than one ms (logline) for consideration? I've got two manuscripts I'm considering for Desire, one that's complete and one that should be done by July (barring disaster!).
Thanks for your help,
Jen
Okay, Rae....
Thanks!

Jen,
You may enter two loglines. Good luck in finishing.
Rae
Thanks, Rae!
Now back to writing, editing and boiling down to two provocative, powerful and hookworthy sentences...
Good Luck Everyone!
You have time to tweak and play with your loglines and manuscripts. You can do this, I have faith!
Rae
Thank You!!!
Thank you for the details! I am so excited and need to get the ms finished.

What luck!
I just finished polishing a ms written with Desire in mind and here you are, Rae, with this fantastic opportunity to pitch it to an editor (fingers crossed). Adding my thanks to those you've already received!
As a newby to this group, I've been reading the postings and getting pumped (and a little intimidated) over the amazing talent here. Good luck to all who submit a logline.

All of the subs I've gotten I've sent confirmations out to you and I'll continue to do that as I recieve them. Good luck everyone! Keep the subs coming and keep polishing up those loglines and manuscripts. This is an awesome oppurtunity and if you can take it, I highly suggest it.
Rae
Can we send test ones to you?
If I'm not really sure about my tagline.. and how well it is.. can I send a tester to you or here to the list for help and suggestions??
I'm a relative newbie to these things and would love a better chance to learn.

Such a great oppertunity but...
This is such a great oppertunity but I won't have internet access on the Sunday, the 15th. So, since I can't enter, I'm just saying good luck to all.

And what Chelle said. I'm not an editor, so I don't want to take that chance and steer anyone in the wrong direction.

Desire Editor Pitch
Chelle, I was just about to go online here and tell everyone about my experience of selling my manuscript through the last Desire pitch when I saw you'd mentioned my logline that's on my website. Thanks.
Rae, you will remember that I did an article for eHarlequin called "The Pitch, The Process & How to Get Picked up for Publication" but I think we lost it in the move to the new community. I've since put the article on my website and hopefully that will help everyone who decides to pitch this time.
Good luck to all!

Maxine!!
I'm so glad you stopped by! I love your article and I think alot of the girls can get some inspiration from it. If you guys are having any reservations about doing this...head over to Maxine's website and take a look at her article about pitching.
If you're still confused...google 3 minute pitch or logline. See what you can pull up and explore. Something may click and give ya the 'aha' moment! Another thing you can do is go to the Desire guidelines and read over what they're looking for...compare your storyline and write down the elements or turning points that may compare. Come up with some 'high concept' sentences. By that I mean ~ use words that define the tone...revenge....secret baby...CEO and assistant...millionaire... Then put them together with words that describe your GMC...what do your characters want? What's keeping them apart?
I suck at it because I get REALLY wordy and one sentence runs into a paragraph. Just do your best!!

This is Great!
Thanks so much for the great opportunity. I have a ms ready to go and was just looking at the Desire series, but thought they weren't open to newbies like myself. This should be fun!
Pitch Challenge
So what happens on the 15th exactly? Sorry total newbie, never entered a comp before. will we need to be able to upload our synopsis and just talk generally about our ms(that is of course, if you are a finalist)?
Pitch Challenge
Just checked out Maxine Sullivans website. heaps of answers there for any other newbie that have any queries.
Day of the pitch
During the actual pitch, the editor will ask a series of questions. She may ask who your favorite Desire authors are, she may ask your writing experience, she may ask you more about your characters or your story.
My best advice, know your stories inside and out. Know your hero and heroine inside and out. And know the Desire line.
Rae
Maxine's website
Wonderful share, Maxine. My being a newbie, too, your pitch article really helped. Love your website, too.

Thanks Maxine...
and thanks Chelle for sharing the link. The articles on Maxine's site are fabulous, informative, and inspirational!
I won't be entering the Pitch Contest (real life has got in the way and the story I was planning for the contest won't be finished in time), but there's always a next time. And pitching, whether in a contest, face to face at a conference meeting, or in a query letter, is one of those essential skills anyway, isn't it.
Because we all deserve a happy ending!

I second it, it's definitely a wonderful help for a newbie to the publishing world.

I'm a newbie with the line and love to read and check out the authors. Another great author site to look through is Bronwyn Jameson. She has a section for writers and some excellent articles.

Pitch challenge
Thanks everyone. This is the first forum/chat room I have ever participated in and had no idea how valuable they can be. What an amazing support group. Thanks again. And thanks Rae for the info. cheers
Chelle...
is pretty awesome and so is Maxine and Bron.
Ladies, you still have time to enter your loglines and still have time to finish your m/ss. I guess now is the time to ask yourself: "How bad do I want it?"
My kids are officially on summer break and we plan to spend a lot of time by the pool, once my sunburn goes away. I'm dragging a notepad and pens to take with me and books because I won't be IN the pool the entire time. Also hoping to find an alphasmart at a great price on ebay, which would make my life a little easier. But the bottom line is, there's always time to write. You have to find it, even if 'life' gets in the way. I usually become a Vampire in the summer--write way into the wee hours of the night and sleep in a little bit.
Rae
Awww!
Feel the love! I just remember what it was like when we did the Superromance pitch. Authors came out of the woodwork to help with advice. I haven't heard much of that kind of support in any other industry.
And Rae deserves a huge pat on the back for all of her hard work in putting together these incredible opportunities.

That was a really good
That was a really good Maxine website. I've saved the Pitch and Process page to my USB because I'll need it handy if I choose to do this Desire pitch. Thinking about pitching like this makes me nervous. But all I gotta do is send like a 2 sentence clincher of the story. If it's liked, then I give a longer version during the actual chat time later on. Sounds easy enough but my stomach is cramping by just thinking about it. But hopefully, I'm not the only one with the jitters.
Amullet
you are not the only one with stomach cramps. I'm a complete newbie, but I'm going to be brave enough to at least attempt it. Good luck to you.
Luck to all!
If you find the Alphasmart, you will love and adore it. It is so easy to use and work with.. I picked mine up and am in complete love.. Now I can't blame the excuses of playing a game or doing a bit of research when I sit down to write, because that's all I can do.. lol..
Crossing my fingers and biting the bullet.. I'm in with all of you and taking the leap to a potential change of life.. I hope to be like all of the wonderful writers on this site.
This has always been my favorite spot.. and I've gotten so much wonderful information..
luck to all!

Real life...
Unfortunately it bites darned hard sometimes! I will be working 60 hours a week all June, plus a three hour a day commute. I'm working on a story that could be a fab Desire, but I can see more than 25,000 words being done by the time of the pitch. Miracles might happen, but I doubt it! I have two other complete first drafts, and I could edit up one this month, but they just don't feel "Desire" enough to pitch.
Good luck in the contest to everyone who has a less horrendous June coming up!
Because we all deserve a happy ending!
My blog- http://waitingforthecall.wordpress.com/
Ugh, Mulberry
That definitely sucks. What about trying to write during your commute? Or are you driving? I know some authors carry a tape recorder and talk into it as they're driving...I'm not trying to push, honest, just trying to offer some solutions for your sanity.
Good luck!
Rae
Re: The Pitch Article
I'm so glad my pitch article is helpful. I was incredibly nervous about the pitch but I figured it was worth being stressed over.
And I can guarantee that Diana is just lovely. And here's the thing. She might be a bit nervous too.
Again, good luck to all who enter.

Oh wow ... I did it ...
I don't know if I have ever been so nervous about hitting the "send" button on an email than I just was a moment ago. I did it. I sent my logline to Rae, now I am just keeping my fingers crossed and working on my MS. Good luck to everyone who sent a logline!

Well done Josie!
Good luck and fingers crossed for everyone who enters!
Thanks for your suggestions Rae, I think the main prob for me at the moment is that struggling with this work project has fried my brain so much that it's also taken over the creative part of me. I woke up early this morning and lay awake working out possible solutions to problems- but on my work writing project (designing a software user manual and self-study guide, and putting together two weeks worth of training sesssions), not my story. And it's a Sunday, for crying out loud!
I'm going easy on myself, trying to write a little on my WIP every day but not putting too much word count pressure on, and trying to de-stress by grabbing some reading time and catching up with how some of the fab Harlequin writers in different lines have handled similar situations to my hero and heroine.
I will be sooooo pleased when this big project is done and I can have my mind back!
Because we all deserve a happy ending!
My blog- http://waitingforthecall.wordpress.com/
Josie and Mulberry
Josie, I got your pitch. Everything will be fine.
Mulberry, I could never, ever write a how-to. Ever. Blech. I don't envy you and I could see how that could suck the life out of the rest of your creativity. Mine would be something like, insert the disk and pray to God. LOL Seriously, they can be so dry and boring. I admire anyone who can write them. Hang in there and I hope this project of yours goes quickly.
Rae
Rae, send pitches inline text or as attachment?
Hi Rae,
Just swinging by to say hello and ask you a quick formatting question:
Do you prefer that the loglines be sent to you as Word attachments or just in the body of the email?
Thank you, and I've been enjoying reading this thread! I'm not sure yet whether my MS will be up to snuff for this contest -- if not, then I'll just sub it the regular way later on. What a fantastic opportunity for someone!

Thanks, Rae!
I have a Bite that I held on to when I heard there would be a contest -- will definitely send that when more details come out on the other thread.
I'll keep chugging along on my Desire MS, will hope to be able to enter this contest! :-)

May Day
sob sob, I am on GMT (this is currently 4hrs ahead of EST).
Problem: I tried logging into the chat rooms, which as far as I can tell, I was able to do. (Was 7pm my time for a chat scheduled for 3-5pmEST). There was just me in the room
Question: What else am I supposed to do to be able chat? We are talking US Eastern Standard Time, right?
HEEELP! :-((

Empi,
Yes, the chats are eastern time. And the rooms may be closed, but I assure you that come time for the actual pitch to take place, the rooms will be open. As long as you made your way over there, you should be fine so long as you're chosen to do it. ;) Breathe.
Rae
Rae, you have email
Gulp....I've sent you my logline!
Trying to turn my nervous energy toward completing my last two chapters of the ms before the end of the month....
Good luck to all who are entering -- what a wonderful opportunity!

Call me dense but the ability to get into the chatroom never even occured to me until lately...and Rae's had my logline for a little while now.
Haven't been able to get into the chatroom for ages but just recently went from dialup to wireless. Checked last night and I got in! Wahoo! Not to mention...PHEW!
Bren
Thanks, Rae
Well, I did get into the rooms. Perhaps I didn't calculate the time correctly.
At least, now I feel comfortable to send in my logline
