Wow...I thought this was for the normal Silhouette Nocturne, but that's ok, I'll see if I can trim down to 15000 words or write a new one...hehehe.

Intriguing...
I've never participated in one of these eharlequin pitch programs. A nocturne Bites submission is on my todo list this year so this might be the perfect way to get my toe wet. I know others mght know the answer to this, but what does '2 paragraphs' really mean? Is there any other guidelines (pages, spacing, font size, etc.)? Also should this be a mini-synopsis of the story or more like a backcover blurb to intrigue more than tell?? How many entries are typically submitted for something like this? Just trying to assess odds

Blurb
Hey kailey, as former pitcher, I can answer this question. When they mean blurb, they mean like the back cover of a book. Think of punch and intrigue that will hook ALT rather than every pertinent detail. I think I messed that up last time :) Oh, and format isn't important as Rae formats them in the proper way before passing them onto ALT, but I don't suggest using fancy or tiny fonts.
Hope that helps.

WOOOOOOOOOOOO
WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Hosty Rae, I have been waiting for this opportunity again! I'm in the process of a much better Bite than before...I think. Well, I like it and my shih-tzu seems to like it...or maybe it is the oreos I've been eating while writing! One never knows what's in the mind of a canine companion. :)
Thanks, Hosty Rae!!

Hi All,
Just a little incentive (though I'm sure you don't need it) - I entered the Bites pitch competition last year and my Nocturne Bites comes out next month! So go for it!

Wow, this seems like a really exciting opportunity
Hetal thanks so much for the info. I figured it would be a cover blurb type deal, but you never know. I love doing those! The synopsis? Not so much.
Nikki - that's very inspirational and enouraging and way cool! Congratulations again!!
I think I'm going to do it....

It gets better!
Next week, author Winnie Griggs is going to hold a "Honing Your Pitch" session. She gives an informative workshop that's SRO at Nationals. She's agreed to come here to our forums and help us hone our pitches. I expect a lot of participation in there.
Also, Ann Leslie Tuttle is going to do an hour long chat BEFORE the pitch. So, if you want answers, if you want to hear what she's looking for in the New Year or just want to sing her praises, everyone will be able to talk to her in a moderated chat an hour before the pitch.
How does that sound?
Rae
That sounds awesome.
That sounds awesome. Thanks, Rae.

Re: Honing Your Pitch
Hi Rae,
When and where will this session be taking place?
Thanks
Way to Go, Nicola!! I
Way to Go, Nicola!! I didn't recognize you! Great pic, by the way! Are you in the process of writing another?
I have been honing my skills for the past several months. I have taken Ann Leslie's advice to heart and really put a lot of effort into my dialogue, minimizing my narrative, and strengthening my emotional conflict. I have done a lot of reading and studying on all of these subjects, so I'm hoping for a payoff this time. This is sooooo exciting!
By the way, pitching is not as scary as it seems. I was terrified last year, but Hosty Rae was there to hold our cyber-hands. She is awesome, you guys!!! And, I wouldn't mind "singing Ann Leslie's praises". She is super nice.
There are no torches or pitchforks in the chat room anywhere!!! Good Luck, EVERYONE!!!!

is when Ann Leslie will be chatting an hour before the pitch--so from 10am to 11 am. Closer to the time, we'll post announcements and reminders.
Didn't mean to ignore you, Nicola! So glad you dropped in to say hi!

About Blurb..
Thanks a lot for the wonderful opportunity... This will be my first attempt at pitching and am currently driving to complete my story and keep it edited / ready before the required dates..
Except for the stomach that's constantly churning, and hands that are perpetually cold, everything is going well ;)
Before I side track let me ask : What is the word count limit for the "blurb" ?

Pitches
Hi RAE:
Do you think that Luna will be holding any Pitches this year?
Also, will Harlequin reinstate their editorial services, for I was hoping to save the funds, to have them go over a manuscript or two...
I plan to try this one as well. Good luck all

Rae, will you be posting the transcript of ALT's chat on this forum for those of us who won't be able to make it, pretty please? Thanks.
I would like to join in on all the fun!
I've participated in a one pitch but, my MS didn't fit the bill. I have been working hard on my writing. Hopefully, this time my pub-ship will come in. I am ready to sail!

I'm not sure if you need
I'm not sure if you need that link or not, but I'll include it in your blurb.
Right now, not currently on my laptop--it's being fixed, but don't despair any submissions to the yahoo email are still there. I hate typing on the desktop--keys are too far away and if I do too much of it my carpal tunnel acts up. I will respond to you all though when it's fixed and it is the weekend, so going out with my family to dinner.
Rae
Hi guys!
Jeez...I haven't been around around for the last couple of months and so much is happening. Wow another pitch! I hope I'll have something ready in time but it'll be a stretch I think. I emailed NB about 6 weeks ago with a storyline that was going to be too long for a bite so I've been working on it for a full ms for Nocturne.
Question about the pitch....
When I click on the link for Hosty Rae I get a yahoo address. Is that the way we are supposed to submit the blurb, through that email address or is there something I'm missing?
Also...will there be a link set up for us to get into the chat room for the pitch? I know Dee had set up links in the past so that it would be easier for authors to navigate into the chat site.
Let me know...and thanks,

Question????
Hi Rae, Hi everyone...
Since I've never done a pitch before I went ahead and read through Winnie Grigg's "Honing Your Pitch" thread. It was a terrifc tool and I thank her for all of her insight.
After reading it though, I found myself wondering about the format of the Bite's Pitch since it's an online chat. Will we be submitting our pitches in writing during the chat or will it be a Q&A based on the blurb submitted? Or maybe it's something altogether different?
I'm only asking because I'd like to prepare for this in the correct vein, rather than expect one thing and then find myself winging it when it turns out to be a different format.
Help, please!

What I understood..
Hi Marianne..
Regards to the whole pitch, what I understood is this.. (from wonderful ladies who have attended it earlier and picking the earlier forums)
We have to work with Winne's techniques and come up with a 2 paragraph blurb (see all the practice pitches out there in Winne's thread).. that gives a clear and concise picture of our entire story. Send it to Rae (email mentioned in the top) before Feb 1st. She'll pass it on to Ann Leslie who will go through all the entires and select 5..
Those 5 who are selected will have to chat with Ann in the given time..and she will ask questions about anything - either the story or characters or about our writing experience or .... Rae will be around to guide us in the chat room (where the link is given), if we are among the "chosen" 5.
After these chat sessions, Ann would decide what to do - like request for a full or partial or .....(I am not sure what else).
Everyone else would be cheering the winners :-)
Hope this helps..

the pitch workshop-editors pitch
well I just finished going over the pitch workshop by Winnie, emailed her my question, asked if she'd do another session and perhaps a 'perfecting a synopsis'.
I like he who, what and how...I'm inclined to add, where/when, which is great because in my view it creates a sort of table of contents.

a few questions
hi,
Just to introduce myself, my name is Steph and this is my first ever post on the forums! I discovered eharleguin after reading a luna book called 'the charmed sphere'. I loved this book and looked up the publishing company to see if I could find more like it. I have been overwhelmed by this site, its management and the opportunity it presents for people to write.
As soon as I discovered nocturnebites i began to write my own. I do have a few questions about this pitch contest.
- Can you enter if you aren't from the USA? I'm from Australia and would love the opportunity to pitch my nocturne bite idea
- What is the deal with the chatroom thing? I don't want to miss out on my pitch being picked up. I gather I will have to be in the chatroom at whatever the equivalent australian time is?
- if your pitch is liked and the editors want to know more, what happens next?
thank you so much for this amazing opportunity. I am nervous but exhilarated at the same time. this site, and the works it produces, are truly amazing.
big ?duh? for me...
I can't believe I wrote incite instead of insight in my post....aaarrrgh. Some writer huh? And I just caught it now like a day and a half later...
Well I corrected it and will try to remember to click the preview comment BEFORE I post the next time! I should make that my New Years Rez...to edit more carefully!!!

Hi Steph
I wanted to send a big 'Hi' to a fellow Aussie (although I currently live in the US). Welcome! These forums are truly amazing as are the opportunities (like this pitch) that come up periodically. I'll let Rae answer you formally, but generally for submitting, it doesn't matter where you're from!

I'm not entering this one but wanted to stop by and wish you all the best. It's great that Hqn and Hosty Rae offer so many different pitches. It must take up a lot of their spare time. Best of luck!

Welcome Steph!
First, did you happen to find the several books that follow the Charmed Sphere? I fell absolutely, madly in love with that series--I believe there are five books currently. Catherine Asaro is a personal hero, lol.
Secondly, you're totally welcome to enter the pitch, BUT you must consider if you can be available for the live chat with the editor because the time is set to the editor's convenience, not the members. So, you could find yourself up in the middle of the night to pitch. But other's have done it, so it's not unheard of. :)
Hope that helps!

thank you for the welcomes!
Thank you everyone for your welcomes. I am so glad to see another aussie on here. and that's only after i had posted one thing! surely there are more of us lurking around.
thanks for answering my question dee. how do you get onto the chat room and does anyone know the equivalent australian time? if your manuscript pitch isn't chosen to talk about can you still submit your manuscript to nocturne bites? or is it considered viewed and rejected? I am a bit confused about the purpose of this pitch competition and what eventuates from it. what happens after the chat?
I only recently read the charmed sphere and it was the only one I could see in my local bookstore. I live in a pretty rural area so next time i go into the city i will check border for the others. I am determined to read more. I loved the chemistry between Chime and Muller. If i can't find the other books in my area then I shall be ordering them online!
Hi Steph!
Welcome!
I am pretty sure that Anna Hackett, a Nocturne Bites author, is also an Aussie. She entered a previous pitch contest for Bites, and I read that she pitched *very* late at night-but she also got asked to submit her work and now she's part of the NB roster. So, the time difference didn't hinder her in the slightest! Have no fear, it can be done-and with a great outcome!
She posts on the boards and she's also very nice so you might want to introduce yourself.

Just sent it!
i just sent my pitch to Rae and I am so nervous! As soon as I come across Anna Hackett I will definitely introduce myself. Everyone here has been so great. This site is fast becoming my most visited web page. Just still wondering, if your pitch isn't chosen can you still submit your manuscript to nocturne bites?
Steph..
Congrats on hitting that submit to Rae :)
Anna's a gem and she can be found in 'Guidelines for Nocturne Bites 3' thread in "write stuffs". There Dee has answered your question as well. If this pitch is not selected, you can always submit through normal channels :)
Hence it is a win-win situation for all of us out here !

Answer
Marianne,
You submit your pitch to me, editor reads all the pitches and decides which one she likes. She'll have your blurb in front of her when you both enter the chat room. She'll ask you questions she has based on your blurb. Sometimes she might ask you what your writing background is. Sometimes it's about plot, characters or the ending of your story. Every editor is different in what they ask. But you do not have to copy and paste in your blurb if you're picked.
Does that help?
Rae
Steph & Aussie Time...
Well, I know that Perth is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time (US), which is when the pitch will be taking place. So, consider your own time zone in comparison to Perth. (I have trouble with AU time zones because you have 4 of them and I can't keep up with your daylight savings time, lol)
So, a 12 noon pitch on the 25th would happen at 1am of the 26th, Perth time. :)
Hope that helps!

Thanks Rae.
I shouldn't be so nervous over this, I know. It's really just the fear of the unknown. But like they say...nothing ventured, right? But I hope not having been previously published isn't considered a strike against any of us. I've submitted in the past and have traded emails with SR (she works with ALT) regarding various things, and she couldn't have been nicer or more supportive. Everyone else says the same thing about the team...that they are wonderful to work with...so my guess would have to be that it's not something that would influence them one way or the other. I hope!

timezone stuff
Thanks dee,
I think in general we are 2 hours ahead of Perth, ( I am on the east coast of Oz, not the west) but daylight savings might make us three. If i do end up being chosen to pitch i will just look up a timezone converter on the net.
Steph
Yes, a 12 noon pitch here would be 4 am for you if you're on the east coast. Ouch!

Another Aussie...
Hi All,
I'm just back from Christmas holidays (a long one, I KNOW!), and I got a shock when it was pitch time already! I had a go at last years', and will try again this year...
Steph, the first LUNA I bought and read was the Charmed Sphere- a great read. I also have The Misted Cliffs... And there are five full novels in that series, Dee...
I agree, Anna Hackett is completely gorgeous - she's been so excellent to me as a newbie. She did have to do a late-night pitch. Two am, maybe? But yeah, depends on where you are. Ick. Perhaps I'll worry about that if I get the nod... :)
Hi Michaela!

Previous pitches
Hi all
Another aussie on site (maybe it's the heat but we do seem to like this line)
I've just got one question as i'm new to pitches and this line. Is there any site where we can read winning nocturne pitches from earlier contests? It would be great to get more of an idea of what the editors are looking for in a pitch.
I did Winnie's workshop and it was fantastic but with nocturne you have the added question of how many words to spend on setting as well as characters and conflict.
Thanks
Catch

My best advice, as we don't showcase the winning pitches is to go up to the top of this board and navigate up to our ebook store and check out the blurbs for the current and past Bites books. That is the best way to know what they're publishing and shows examples of how you can construct your 2 pp blurb to send in.
