Style Vs. Grammar

We've all gotten line edits from some well meaning soul who just wants to show us how we could improve or tighten a line. Sometimes, they're right. Sometimes, they're wrong. The trouble is, sometimes, we don't know for sure.

Truth is, writers get too close to their work. We fall in love with prose. We get it in our heads that the line is perfect, that it flows, that others just don't understand our "style". 

We forget that, most of the time, if something needs to be explained, it's not style...it's wrong.
