Guidelines For The New "Harlequin Historical: UNDONE"!

Writing Guidelines—Historical UNDONE (working name)

Word Length: 10-15,000 words

Format: eBooks

Senior Editor: Linda Fildew

Editor: Suzanne Clarke

Editorial Assistant: Mimi Berchie

Editorial Office: London

If you've always wanted to write for Harlequin Historical, but were
daunted by the length, now is your chance to submit something shorter!

The response to Harlequin Historical's more sensual storylines have
been so positive that we are creating a new eBook sexy short story
program—Historical UNDONE.

In Historical UNDONE we are looking for a high level of sensuality that
flows naturally out of the plotline. There should be a strong emotional
basis to the heightened attraction—it's vital the reader can believe in
the intense emotion driving the characters as their relationship
develops. These stories should be hot, sexy and subtly explicit without
the lovemaking being vulgar or gratuitous.

Whether you choose a dark and devilishly sexy Regency rake caught in
a compromising situation with a headstrong miss, or a courageous Saxon
lady held captive by a powerful Norman warrior, your characters should
be fully fleshed out and should be the main focus of the story.

The history should be well researched in order to give an authentic
sense of period without taking over from the romance. We are happy to
consider stories set in ancient civilizations up to and including the
First and Second World Wars. What remains ever popular are the Regency
tales, which could see your characters scandalizing high society or
being drawn into a salacious underworld inhabited by pickpockets and
courtesans!

We are also open to slightly different elements from those normally
found in Harlequin Historical books. Please feel that you can explore
aspects of the paranormal and time travel.

You do not need to be agented to send material to us. We are
actively looking for talented new authors and wish you every success
with your submissions.

Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be
considered—no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent
as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow
standard formatting guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in
a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should
appear as a header or footer on each page.

Paranormal elements

I was excited to see that HH Undone is willing to look at submissions with paranormal elements. My questions is, should these stories with a paranormal twist have a lighter tone - not a darker tone like you'd find in a Nocturne or a Nocturne Bites? Or is a dark okay?

Ditto.....

I've got a little something I started that nose dived in a writers challenge I wouldn't mind working on for Undone.  It's got a little paranormal in it.

Is there a light at the end of this tunnel or do I just have tunnel vision from staring at the computer screen so long?

It does say explore

So, it never hurts to try whatever you have in mind. :) It doesn't seem limited.

Best of luck, gang!

Light or dark. . .

I think on the paranormal side of things they'll lean light.  Like maybe no demons:)

But, judging from Harlequin Historicals, I think plenty of emotion, tortured heroes etc. might be okay.

The western I sent in was light, but with high sensuality and high emotion.  Um, that's what I was aiming for anyway!

Supernatural history

Hmm. Being a medievialist, I keep thinking of all the period
folklore and legend which people back then would have considered
entirely believable, but which we enlightened citizens of the twenty
first century know to be paranormal. I see some scope
here... Melusine, the Knight of the Swan, the Haunted Castle....

Out comes the book of legends.

H

Legend

Oh, H, that sounds intriguing.  I'm thinking it's been too long since I've read a book with a castle in it. . .well, if you don't count Hogwarts<g>

I've always loved the historicals, but confess they seem really hard and long to write.  10,000 to 15,000 is a great way to break into it.  I have a ton of projects going right now, but this is something I'm definitely interested in!

Legendary history

I'm thinking of writing one of these over the Labour Day weekend for
the writing challenge. It's just the right length--a little
more than I've ever done before, but not so much as to be impossible.

Better not talk too much about it, though, or I'll lose all my momentum.

This is rather exciting.

H

This sounds like a great

This sounds like a great opportunity!  I can't wait to read and write for this line!  I'm planning on zipping through one on the Labor Day writing weekend, too.

I did it

I wrote a complete short story set in the 14th century over the weekend.

Upon
consideration, what with the fantasy elements, it might be more appropriate for the LUNA line, but that
would make it too short by an order of magnitude. I'll have to
let it sit and stew for a while before I decide what to do about it.

But I did it. I actually finished a story!

H

still astonished

Yay H!

But hey, they're open to paranormal or new angles at Undone. You never know, it could work!

Best of luck!

Thanks Dee

You are so encouraging!

I think I might just send in my MS
(after I go through it and crank the sensuality up a notch, and find
names for all those secondary characters, like Eldest Sister and Second
Huntsman--makes it sound like a Shakespeare play.)

What's the worst that can happen, after all?  A rejection slip?  Been there, done that.  Still writing.

We really appreciate your positive POV 'round these parts, Dee.  It's very uplifting especially when we're too doubt-filled to press that send button!

Paranormal historicals? I

Paranormal historicals? I like that idea. Now if I only had something smaller... When I tend to write historcials, I can't seem to keep within the word limit, it always runs over. But I'll see what I can cook up.

I'm guessing this is just like the Nocturne Bites. It's open indefiantly.

All I know . . .

is that I can't wait for November when the first one comes out! I love my Historical reads but I also love paranormal and time travel is so much fun!

Paranormal Historicals

I like historical paranormals too. I pulled out a Regency paranormal I wrote about 3 1/2 years ago and didn't know what to do with. I'm revising it and hopefully submitting soon.

I just hit the send button on my pirate historical. Woot! now he waiting begins. Anyone ave any idea about the turn around time??

Undone Giveaways

Good luck to everyone submitting to Undone!  I just turned in some proofreads on mine, and I'm dying to see the cover.

I'm one of the authors helping to launch the series in November, and I wanted to let you know that the four of us are planning to do some blog touring and giveaways.  The e-book Undone! titles forthcoming are:

"Shipwrecked and Seduced" by Amanda McCabe (pirate story)

"Libertine Lord, Pickpocket Miss" by Brownyn Scott (Regency)

"The Unmasking of Lady Loveless" by Nicola Cornick (Regency)

"The Viking's Forbidden Love-Slave" by Michelle Willingham (Viking)

Once it gets a little closer to November, we'll probably firm up the dates, but we'd love to have company!  :)

Michelle

Great to see you here! Thanks for giving us a heads up on the titles. Are all those titles coming out in NOVEMBER? Or is it November and December?

And be sure to post any promotional blogging you'll do. I'll try to make it a point to stop by! ;)

auto responses

Are people getting auto responses for their submissions to undone? I haven't gotten anything and I'm wondering if it sent. It LOOKS like it sent...maybe they aren't sending out confirmations of receipt??

SueB

auto responses

I didn't get an auto response when I submitted several weeks ago, Sue, but I didn't get one for my Bites either so I'm going to assume everything is okay:)

I'm so excited for November!  The upcoming Undones sound scrumptious.

Thanks for the info. I feel better knowing you didn't get an auto response either. I know bites doesn't give one, but spice breif does...go figure. If you didn't get one either maybe it's the norm for undone.

I'm SURE they will want an outlaw at undone. Your story sounds very interesting...I'm actually kind of nervous about mine. My undone potential is about pirates... Here's hoping they don't already have too many pirate stories! lol.

SueB

Sue B, yes, these are the 4

Sue B, yes, these are the 4 in November.  After that, it will be one a month, so I've heard.

And I love outlaw stories!  :)

Only 1??

That's really too bad. Hope that a lot of people buy them so they will change their minds and do more than 1 a month...

Since it's such a new endeavor, I think they're being cautious.  If sales go really well, then I'm sure they'll increase the offerings.  So definitely, show your support if you like the stories!  :)

Anyone?

I wanted to shout out to see if anyone has heard back on their submissions?  Has anyone else submitted and do you want to join us as we wait:)

Undone Sub

I submitted to UNDONE on September 21. Didn't get an auto-response and haven't heard anything yet. But I figure it's way too early *LOL*

I would love to know they received it though. Auto-responders are great for author peace-of-mind.

Yeah..

They have an AR set, but it doesn't always fire off. I'm never sure why. Might be in your junk or spam filter, too. Just a possibility! :)

Any way to check since I didn't receive an AR?

Synopsis?

The guidelines state "only complete manuscripts" - does that mean manuscript only, or is a synopsis still required in addition to the full MS?

Romy

I didn't send a synopsis, just the full manuscript. I did send a paraghraph blurb summarizing the story inteh body of the email, though. (The email was set up like a query letter).

Hope that helps!

It's always a good idea...

to send some kind of synop or story break down in the email. But they won't reject you outright if you didn't.

If you didn't recieve an AR, you can email the submission address to seek confirmation. Also, even if you do an email submission, often the Richmond office sends a written confirmation number by snail mail. (Though, have to admit, since this is new, I'm not sure if that applies to Undone.)

Not much help, am I?

ask a silly question....

Hi Dee,

I know this has been asked a million times before Embarassed- and possibly the information is here somewhere - but

if I am rejected, do I still maintain rights over my work??

Additionally,  If I have posted a section of this work in Cafe Social, how much / what apsects must I change for it to be eligble for submission here?

If you would rather re-direct me to this information rather than answer this - again! - please feel free!!

I think this is an intriguing new line and I'm tempted to make my first submission!! eek!! Laughing

Still Waiting

Debbie - Have you heard anything about your MS, and if not have you received any kind of reply that they got your MS.

Just to let you know

I'm going to be blogging a little bit about each book on MySpace over the next 3 weeks. I recently blogged the teaser that Michelle Willingham shared with me and a picture of the cover. Check it out http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=368319937

Submitted on Oct 10

Hi all!

I submitted my manuscript to Historical UNDONE on October 10th and have not received any reply. I am encouraged by Debbie_M's response a month after sending her mss. I am excited about this new line!

 Lisa (writing as Meredith Malone)

How long to wait for a response?

Hi Everyone!

I sent in a manuscript around Oct. 20 and have heard nothing yet.  How long does it usually take?  How long should I wait before I email them to see the status?  This is the first time that I have ever submitted anything so I am very anxious.

Thanks,

Judy

Judy, you should wait at

Judy, you should wait at least 3-4 months before you check.  With the holidays approaching, I'd say it'll be more like 4 months.  If you haven't heard by Feb.20th, I'd e-mail.  I know it sounds like a long time, but unfortunately publishing is a slow business.  Best of luck!

judy

I sent mine in the first week in November - so we can wait together! ; ) Like Michelle said...3-4 months is standard, unfortunately. My recommendation is to start working on a new project. It takes the sting out of a rejection and if this ms should sell you can say to the editor - "Hey, I have this other ms I just polished...would you like to take a look?" ;)

Meanwhile - I'll hold your hand. :p

Sue

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info.  I've been checking me email daily!  Good luck to everyone!  I've already started on my next one but the waiting is the hardest part. Smile  Judy
