Guidelines For Nocturne Bites

Length: 10,000—15,000 words
Senior Executive Editor: Tara Gavin
Associate Senior Editor: Ann Leslie Tuttle

Silhouette Nocturne books is looking to acquire paranormal editorial with strong sexual, fantasy and danger elements for its new eBook program, Nocturne Bites.

We’re looking for fast-paced novellas that hook the reader early on by establishing a paranormal world and its conflicts. We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times.

Many of the elements that make a Silhouette Nocturne book successful remain true for the Nocturne Bites series. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life into an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life and death issues. A strong alpha hero is of utmost importance—he should be powerful, mysterious and totally
attractive to the heroine.

While action-packed and mission-oriented, the scope of these stories should be more contained, with additional focus placed on character development. All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to be tied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner.

For published authors, this line is a great way to build their miniseries with Harlequin and Silhouette books. Unpublished authors are welcome as well.

Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page.

New Room!

We were over 500, so I had to archive. We kinda don't need the "guidelines" page anymore. How about we rename it? Something like, "One Bite At A Time" or something, lol.

Crossing fingers Barb can get in here!

Move over on that bench

Move over on that bench Nikki and Cora!! Make some room for me coz I'm waiting too Smile. Not that I've made much progress on my next bite. In fact I think it hates me! lol. I've been getting really frustrated with the time I've wasted writing and then rewriting so I might just set it down and come back to it later when I'm feeling a little less like 'biting' its head off.

Hey Barbara!!! Nice to have you back. And ooooo we'll be reading your masterpiece soon. Can't wait!!

I want to start reading some full nocturnes but they don't have them in New Zealand that I can find. I guess I could get some shipped to me  ??  Will have to e-mail someone and find out.

Dee...

love the new name! And can we get the top stuff updated with whomever replaced Sean Mackiewicz? Thanks!

shaking the "lurk" off my toes. . .

Hi Rach!

It's good to be back.  I was beginning to feel like a voyeur.<g>

About my "masterpiece", isn't it funny how the pendulum swings?  One second, I'll feel like Monet and the next I'll feel like I should be scraping gum off the sidewalks at Disney World. lol  (of course, my taste runs more toward Fray then Monet;>)

When I mailed my full Nocturne on Friday, I had to pull my car over to the side of the road after leaving the post office and give that daughter-of-an-alcoholic-carpenter girl that still lives inside of me a good talking to.  She always rears her insecure head at the most inconvenient times! Grrrrrrrarrrgggghhhh. Sigh.

But, Sanctuary is mailed and Wilderness is sold and I think maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't have had the gumption to try if it wasn't for my constant fight with that insecure girl. . .the one I used to be full-time:)

Ah Barbara...

we simulposted!

My insecure girl is like a tattoo on my butt that won't go away. And she is the loudest cow I've ever met. I made a crucial decision this week as far as my career goes and, don't you know, she's yammering on about how I can't do it and I don't have big enough ideas and blah, blah, blah.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right. And we've ventured before. Got nothing to hurt but our pride and the loud cow on the left cheek. :)

Chin up, hon.

Do we all have that little

Do we all have that little devil on our shoulder??? Mine sits there the whole time I'm writing, chittering away in my ear - not good enough, not good enough. I'm sure thats what makes writing so exhausting sometimes. The odd times the little devil is silent...well its sooooo much easier. And the writing actually flows!!! So don't spoil it Barbara!! Coz I have this rosey image of how at peace you must be now that you have a shoe/slipper/foot, in the door LOL.

Hey, super good luck with your full nocturne tooSmile

LOL, Dee!

I can't decide if I need to apologize for being such a pain Tongue out or say "you're welcome."

So...are you stressed out about what your family said you should do like you said in subcare? I say go for it!

Insecure. *waving hand furiously*   Um, yeah. Count me in on that! I'm starting to think it's just part of the whole writer game, because honestly, even the pubbed folks I've met say they STILL feel that way! Maybe that part of our personality is what allows us to feel (and therefore write)  the things we do....

Everyone. . .it's nice to know I'm in good company when it comes to insecurities.  Just all 'round good company, actually:)

I've been invited to be a guest blogger on Harlequin's Paranormal Romance Blog next month.  Wilderness is going to be a featured title. I might focus on facing fear since that's exactly what Tess has to do in the story and it's so relevant to what I've been going through as a newbie<g>.

You all are awesome.  No wonder I missed you last week!

As for the creepy crawly little devil insecurities out there...phew!...I'm so glad it's not just me.Smile

Rach...

No kidding Rach, that's the truth!  I had no idea it had reached the 2 month mark. I figured it out last night while figuring bills. LOL

I've been so busy with other things I hadn't noticed the date. *_*

BTW, yes, that little doubt-monster nags me everytime I open Word. Give her a cookie and tell her to take a hike. You have writing to do!

Live, love, write...

Much as I'd like to blame the fam...

I'm actually a ball of nerves most of the time. Usually I can compartmetalize--I know it's supposed to be bad for you, but seriously, I compartmentalize everything and I'm quite happy that way--and almost totally forget that a submission is out there. For some reason, I'm having trouble with this one. I worry about it almost every day for at least five minutes. Dumb, but what can you do.

The rest is simply that my natural writing ambitions have completely regenerated from the stasis they went into while I was preggers. I've got the will, I've got the itch, I just don't have the time. And of course, the will has grown and I'm trying to regain focus between what I WANT to do and what I HAVE to do and how to schedule them. The Fly Pen is working well, but it can still be difficult to get anything past the girls, esp now that they're teething again.

So, the thing I'm doing now is taking a step I've been thinking I couldn't do, but knew I needed to and that's search for an agent. I still plan to keep working towards category, but if I plan to really make a career from my writing, I need to follow a game plan and an agent was always an eventuality to my personal plan. Agents can open doors I can't on my own. I'm just surprised that I can no longer talk myself into believing I'm not ready to open the door.

But being ready doesn't mean you don't get scared. So I just remind myself of what I've always said when I send off another ms: The absolute worst thing an editor can ever say is no. Most wouldn't tell me I suck, but if they did, so what? I've got a whole bunch of folks here at home who'd argue with her while I ate popcorn, right? LOL!

*Rubs Jules's belly* Thanks, btw. One never knows if Agents adhere to the no-suck rule.

Benchwarming

I sub'd the same time as Cora, so I'm at the 2 month mark, too. :) Honestly, I'm not expecting to hear anything until November....

Congrats Barb on appearing in the paranormal blog! Can hardly wait to read it!

And Dee - good for you! You are definately good enough! Don't let the crows fool you. I'm sure you will be able to find an agent. It's tough...but the right one is out there for you. I just know it!

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate the congrats!  Most of my family is extremely conservative so it's unlikely I'll get the same positive reaction from them<g>  In fact, their views held me back for a long time because I was worried about what they would think about what I wanted to write:P  Something about post-thirty-five changed my way of thinking! lol

Barbara

I feel your pain Barb. LOL. My family knows I love to write but they would die if they read some of what I've written. They're wonderful people, but very conservative when it comes to certain things. They'd flip at the paranormal or spicy elements. Actually I think the sex would freak them out more than anything else. Hence the need for a pen name if and when I get pubbbed, lol, at least for my spicy stuff anyway.

I have one older sister who's read some of  Spice Brief I'm about to submit and she liked it. I've sworn her to secrecy! And when I finally do publish, that is when I'll let the poop hit the fan, so to speak, with my parents!

Gorgeous cover, Barbara!!

Gorgeous cover, Barbara!! Love the look of your fella.. very yummy..

Oh Stargirl.. I soooo know what you're going thru.. My family would be next to yours if they saw some of the stuff I wrote.. lol..

Can I add in my own little bitty whine about wanting a cover and a book?? :) pretty please..

Hi everyone on the waiting bench!!

I'm sooo glad its Friday. Today I have no work (except a kardio kickboxing class I take later in the arvo) so it's my big writing day. Yay!!!! Might be able to pound out a couple of pages - after I gag and hogtie the little devil of course.  lol

I'll squeeze in beside you

I'll squeeze in beside you all on the bench. I'm awaiting word on my second submission to the bites. LOL. I'm sure it won't be until early next year, so I'll just get comfy here. I had forgotten that I'd subbed it. Isn't that a riot. Now, I need to work on the contest entry I've subbed to Feel the Heat and I really need to start on a new bite. One that actually might make it this time. LOL. I really don't think my second one will either, soooo.... but, I can hope can't I. LOL

Hey Barbara

Did you get to choose the cover or do you just get what you're given kind of thing - was just wondering

pen names

star, you think your family would flip.  I'm a high school teacher.  Imagine if my students read my material and knew it was me.  I shudder to think about it.

As it is a close friend of the family asked to read my dragon Bite and now he keeps  giving me this strange look and making reference to my inner "wild woman."

Mandy

Is there a light at the end of this tunnel or do I just have tunnel vision from staring at the computer screen so long?

OMG Mandy!!

LMAO about your friend. My aunt learned that I write and she keeps asking me to send her something to read. Of course she has no idea WHAT I write...For some reason I have no problem sending my manuscript off to editors, agents...even crit partners...but family? Gosh. I have to see them every Christmas...and Easter...and Thanksgiving....besides, I couldn't find anything PG enough to give them. ;)

I'm with you too

I'm with you too girls....everybody knows about the paranormal romance, and that's fine...even though the heat factor is still pretty high!  But, the story I just sold to that "epub" as you know is pretty HOT, and I told my brother not to tell my mom.....and she calls me last night, because me and my big mouth put it up on my website...and well, I guess being the proud mother that she is, she likes to peruse my website...so she's asking me all kinds of questions, and I gave her vague answers....I don't think she really understand the whole epub thing anyway, but I might have to tell her that I've written something I don't think she should read because it's a little risque...my mom is cool, but....still...she's my mom!

Art Fact Sheet

Hey Rach,

There's something called the AFS that you fill out.  It is *extremely* detailed.  In fact, I had to write a synopsis for "Wilderness" after it sold. . .oh, the misery!!  Part of the AFS is filling out key scenes which you think would be good for your cover.

Needless to say, I stressed those silver chains and the night forest because they're not only visually appealing, but they are also a symbolic part of Tess' journey to empowerment.  I gave very detailed descriptions of the chains and the trees and of Colin. . .right down to height, weight, build etc.

After that, it was out of my hands.  I've heard lots of authors say they love some of their covers and hate others.  I'm very happy to love my first one:)

My conservative family doesn't hold me back anymore.  I might worry about what they'll think of this or that, but I don't let it stop me from following my own path.  In fact, I'll be taking my mother a print out of my cover today when I visit her(she doesn't own a computer).

Thanks again, ladies.  I may not let my family hold me back, but it would still be deflating if you all didn't off-set it!

I recieved a response...

I recieved a response for my submission a few days ago and its a no-go. They did give me some advice and why it wasn't chosen - which I so respect since a lot of places just give a rejection and don't say why.

They bascially said it wasn't fact-paced enough for a short. I agree with that. There were a few too many slow moments - I have a problem with giving too much background info sometimes.

Maybe i can revise it and try again. I also want to try something for the Historical Undone too...

Sorry about your R....

You've got plenty of company here.  Tongue out  But, WOW, you got advice? That's awesome! Most of us have just received form "no thanks."  So you're going to sub again after fixing it? Go for it!
