Struggling Writers 6

Writing is hard work. Whether you're published, unpublished, just starting out, or been doing it for years, sometimes you need a chance to sit back, grab a beverage of your choice, and hang out with others just like you.

In this club, we're all in it together. We wait and hope. Complain and encourage. Share and learn. Sometimes we celebrate. Sometimes we pick ourselves off the ground and try all over again. And we do a lot of laughing, too.

Because, after all, learning this craft and putting yourself out there is really a struggle. So, come on in, introduce yourself and start a conversation.

Not sure how this happened

Not sure how this happened but I think I made it into the room first - lonely in here - waiting for all the great writers to come and keep me company with their wise advice and warm wit!

Oh, here's everyone!  Hi

Ah, a bright and shiny new room...

love it!

Things are finally back to normal (whatever that is!) but the hubby is gone again overseas with his job and will be gone until Sept...yuck! But on the good side I do have alot of time to work on my writing so I need to get back to book #3!

NEW!! - as in - vernix everywhere!

Hello room... I have been scanning the site for days, partly 'looking for everything i need to submit', but also perhaps procrastinating on submitting!

I have a full ms done with the first three chapters polished and shining, have written and re-written my query (btw, how long of a hook in the query? 25 word? 50 word?)  AND ~  I can't seem to break through the synopsis.  When I am writing it, I am not sure how long it should be???  From what I have gathered, a couple of pages?  And how casual should the voice be?  Like a really excited girlfriend chat, or just the facts?  (I am a nurse, so I know how to do the really dull stuff quite well.)

Thank you to anyone available to dry me off a bit and put a diaper on.  After my questions are answered, I will consider myself swaddled and content!Cool

I am but a hungry catepillar eating, growing, waiting for the next step.

Briana--A synopsis should

Briana--A synopsis should cover the emotional turning points of the story (how they meet, how they fall in love, what keeps them from being together, how they resolve their differences) and should be a few pages.  I think they'd like you to keep it to 2-3 pages, but I've turned in 5 page synopses and they haven't had any problem with that.  It depends on which line you're targeting.  The main thing is, don't focus on WHAT happens; focus on HOW they fall in love.  Do the best you can, but don't stress too much.  The main thing editors pay attention to is the writing.  Hope that helps!

Briana, a sample synopsis...

The eHarlequin site has a link for a sample query, synopsis and manuscript page here:

http://www.eharlequin.com/store.html?cid=598

I feel your pain; I'm currently whittling my six-page synopsis for Blaze down to two. I'm currently at 2.5, and might just have to call it good as far as length goes. The synopsis is definitely the hardest part of the submission process for me!

Karen

Vernix!

LOL, I had a feeling you were a nurse right from that word! Welcome aboard, Brianna! As usual, the crew has excellent advice, so I won't stop you from following those tips. Best of luck and if you need anything at all, don't hesitate to ask. :)

finding my way

Hi everyone!

I hope you don't mind, but I just stumbled across this thread and it looks like a nice place to hang out. There's nothing like the writing and submission process, so I'm happy to cheer on those in the process and cross fingers with those waiting to hear news.

Briana, you got some great advice. Best of luck with your synopsis fun!

Dee, it's great to "see" you. Looks like you have a nice bunch in here. I'll be sure to visit often and bring my tooty-horns for support.

New Room!

Hello all!

I have been missing in action for awhile, keeping my head down and trying to keep all my balls in the air. Hello to all the new people who have dropped by. This group is a fantastic set of people!

I will admit that my M&B writing is not happening at the moment as I concentrate on a ST idea which has been brewing for awhile.

Hey there everyone!

I've been lost in the day job of late - really stressful at work lately - so I just wanted to say that I've read the posts and right this minute - I worked to 11:10 p.m. last night - started at 8:00 a.m. - my brain cells haven't floated to the top so to speak.

Welcome to all the newbies!  You will find some outstanding ladies in here, who are published and those of us who are waiting "our time in the sun"!  These ladies give wonderful advice on the publishing world, what it is like to meet those deadlines, those that are self-imposed and those that aren't, and it is just grand.  Pull up a chair and just absorb all that they have to offer!  You won't regret coming in here!

Waving to Biddy - good luck on your ST!

Love to all - I think there is an aspirin on my desk somewhere that's calling my name!  Bye for now!  Jamie

Glad we're all here!

I love this room because someone will always ask a question that, even if I know the answer, I like to see everyone's take on it.  I too am struggling with the dreaded synopsis!  I just don't like them!!!!  Oh well.  Every job has a necessary evil!  J  I just got my times for my Editor and my Agent appointments for nationals today.  SO... since I'll be spending my birthday at Disneyland, come home for 8 days then off to DC... now would be a good time for me to start getting ready to pitch my ideas.  I have nine ms(s) done.  I completed series and the rest are category.  I want to pitch the series, but get mixed opinions on that.  So I'm just going to get something together for all my works and then go with my gut!  Can't think of a better way right now J

And a big WELCOME to all I missed!

Nine, she says

Bernadette – Nine? Nine!? Holy crap. That’s impressive. Best of luck with the process and here’s wishing you some very good luck for Nationals. Nine… sheesh. I’m blown away!

Got it done!  Will re-read tomorrow.  Nothing better to do on a rainy day without the kids, but write, huh?  Thanks again for the comments and suggestions.

I am but a hungry catepillar eating, growing, waiting for the next step.

I've been up all night

I've been up all night recovering a couple of chapters I had written for class (luckily a very, very, very, VERY good friend had a copy she was Critiquing for me. I sighed in relief in that one.) and I've been doing rewrites now. I just finished chapter 3, the last chapter I had written.

I think I need a couple of days from anything writing.

Anyways, it's nice to see you ladies (and any other gentlemen.)

Wow, good job on the hard work, Briana and Lou. Looks like you guys have been working hard this weekend. Good for you. Best of luck Briana! Way to go Lou! Keep us posted as to your progress.

Happy writing to all the other quiet ones out there!

My poor hubby... I just made a monster list of household things-to-do for us to accomplish today so we're all caught up around here... so I can focus all my efforts on wips and writing projects this week. He doesn't mind. Not really. He knows there'll be cookies or cupcakes in it for him, to reward the good behavior. Ha. Whatever it takes to ensure I get a solid week of productivity. :)

Best to all.

Anyhow the reason in me being MIA for some time...Been job-hunting and all...

Finally landed a temp to perm job as a Patient Service Associate in a very prestigious(i heard) Hospital...in the Accident & Emergency Dept...i hear it'd be very 'exciting' working there...though i shudder at the thought...Surprised

And...i'm still trying to complete my manuscript...i've no idea how i'm going to finish it with the 3-shift job...

But working there could bring me fresh ideas for upcoming stories...that is, if i can get around to finishing my current 'baby' Wink

Allright...i guess it's time for me to go...im on Medical Leave today...

Stop by www.loriamay.com when you have a moment and if you see any broken links, typos, or other oddities please do let me know! Hopefully I didn’t mess things up somehow while trying to fix them. new author in this genre

hey all, was glad to stumble across this discussion board whilst browsing the site. as an author new to the romance genre (i mostly write teen fiction) i was happy to find that i am not the only one struggling with my manuscript. i have been working on this project on and off for about a year, making notes whenever an idea struck me that might be interesting to develop, however it is only this week that i have really begun piecing together what i have now come to refer to as my literary jigsaw puzzle, though admittedly there are many pieces still missing! will be watching for lots of tips from those experienced writers!

WELCOME! to all I missed

I have been MIA a few days... the business I sold is givng me fits.  I sold it to my sister or the new owner would have probably killed me by now.  Someone hacked the site... well when they changed servers... guess what popped up!!!  OUI!!!!  So I'm behind on critique group, I leave for vacation on Thursday (Bday next Saturday) and then back home and off to DC.  I need to get my pitches together and now I'm reporgramming "my sister's" site this weekend.  I'm in so over my head.  I'm crossing my fingers hoping I come back with SOMETHING from DC to make it all worth while!!!!! :)

Working

*yawns*

sorry, i was working over my first three chapters, line by line in printed form. it worked that they were 7 pages (chapter 2), 7 pages (chapter 2) and 5 pages (chapter 3) when printed..and now im stuck on the "end" of chapter 3 and what to do for the rest of the novel. I had it planned out, but now my characters want to take it a different way--but they won't tell me the way.

 argh!

YEEHAW!

I guess today, I am on a writer's high (so to speak).  I officially mailed off my first MS to HAR.. *fingers crossed*.  I have about half the thing to re-write (some continuity details) but other than that, I am ready to send the whole thing in... if, no - when they call... lol!

Lori - LOVED your website!  Will be back to visit soon.  The FAQs were fun!  I actually guzzle coffee while I'm writing.  Will be looking for your poetry book.  I haven't done any poetry myself for decades... you might have inspired me to pick it up a bit... thanks.

Evangeliqa - WTG on the new job!  I also work in healthcare, and quite frankly, have decided that the hospital is crawling with inspiration... although I doubt that many readers would actually believe the stories. i.e: Actually had a pt call 911 on an RN for not giving her enough pain medication...  PEOPLE ARE ODD!  (I have to remind myself of this when I am writing: not everyone is as level headed and intelligent as I am, if they were, the world would not have any conflict, which according to the 'conflict discussion', *wink* this is very important!)

Bernadette - WHEW, girl... my head is spinning for you... Good Luck!

Lou & Elle - I am also struggling with a ms that has a bunch of jigsaw pieces and unruly characters that don't seem to want to follow my storyline!  -- my plan is

A) someone will give us some suggestions for raking all this together *hint hint!

B) Apply what I have read in the conflict discussion (maybe I don't have enough conflict, or the conflict is murky)

C) Redefine my character... or kick her out - she is a little shifty on her personality -recently divorced and way too unstable to be pursuing a love interest so far... maybe she needs more time after her divorce?  lol... I might give her another couple months before I pick her up again -- or maybe the blonde bombshell that irritates her will have to get the guy in this one?  Or maybe it's the guy that is the problem?

Okay, thanks for putting up with my musings, I shall retire to bed, as the paying job has me scheduled for 7 am!

Good luck to all, and to all a good night!

Briana

Wow~

I can't believe I've been away for so long. We've got a shiny new room and lots of new faces, too! Yay!

Christyne and I will both be in D.C. Expecting to see pictures of, not only the Fecklett, but of your little ones, too, Michelle! I've got to see if I can pin my daughter down long enough to get her picture. She's gone camera shy lately. Must be the age.

I'm exhausted tonight. Having trouble holding my eyes open. It has definitely been Monday for me. Hoping for a better tomorrow.

Lori,  your site is fab. Love the faq's too, and the extras. Writers are generous people.

Julie, your site is also fab, totally opposite Lori's. Both sites give me a great impression of your personalities & work.

"Write Crap" is now embedded in my brain. Think I'll print it up & tape it to the monitor -- just what I needed.  Smile

Hi all

I signed up on eHarlequin a few weeks ago, but this is the first time I've stopped by SW. Linda Atkinson here - pen name Jennie Marsland. I'm working on a historical series - first one is epubbed with Mystic Moon Press - and I'm generally looking for direction to stay afloat in the overwhelming sea of conflicting info on publishers, agents and the business in general. also, somewhere to go when I'm convinced that my writing is crap, lol! Great to meet you all.

Welcome,

Welcome, Jennie!

Julie--don't forget my Cadbury's Picnic Bars.  Tongue out  I will pay you for them or buy you a drink.  Laughing  Was I supposed to get you something from the U.S.?  Trying to remember...brain is a sieve right now.

Julie

Thank you all for your inspiration.  I enjoy your posts and links.

crap and partying

Hey, thanks for visiting my site, Briana and Tappity.  :-)  The "write crap" is my personal mantra—crap can always be fixed, whereas a blank page is just nothing.

Trish, Christyne and Michelle, I will be partying with you!  Michelle, I have a note telling me to buy Picnic bars but it's so hot right now, I'm putting it off till next week so they won't melt!  I don't need anything from the US, as I'll be there for a month.

I was pregnant at the last RWA conference so I'm looking forward to doing a lot more at this one.

Anyone else?

Right, I need to get lunch ready, wake up Fecklet from his nap, and  bring him to nursery so I can spend the afternoon writing.  Then this evening I'm going to a launch party for brand-new Romance author Nina Harrington...oh, the glamorous life of an author!
