An acquaintance once told me he was a pillar in his community, but I know his children suffered because of his limited time with them. One of the things that impresses me most about President Obama is that although he is the busiest man in the world, it’s important to him to schedule family time, especially with his children.

A couple of weeks ago, someone sent me one of those forwarded emails I get all the time. Most of the time, I delete them, but the heading of this one caught my attention. So I read it, pretty much knowing what I’d find. And I was right. The email was offensive—at least to someone in my skin.

It was an email that questioned the need for Black History Month or television channels specifically for minorities. It questioned why people of color received “special treatment”. And it was written in a way that smacked of sour grapes. “If people of color can have this, why can’t we?”

Dr. Carter G. Woodson is known as the Father of Black History. He was born in 1875 in rural Buckingham County Va, to parents who were former slaves. The Woodsons were poor farmers and Carter was one of their nine children. Because the family needed Carter’s help in the fields, he didn’t finish his basic elementary education until he was 17 yet he went on to become only the second African American to obtain a PHD from Harvard in 1912. (The first was W.E.B. Dubois in 1895).

I have a bumper sticker on my car with a hologram of President Barack Obama that reads: YES WE DID! People Powered. Together we made history – November 4th 2008.

This month’s theme is Yes We Can, but if we look back at what our ancestors had to go through for us to be here to witness this momentous time in our history we have to pay homage to those who came before us because Yes They Did. I’m certain many of you recall the words of the old folks who preached: do not disgrace the ancestors; do not make the ancestors regret what they had to go through so you can enjoy the freedoms denied them. The words are not only imprinted in my brain but also in the marrow of my bones.
