Wicked Sacrifice by Lora Leigh (Ellora's Cave, 2006)

Two novellas: “Wicked Intent” and “Sacrifice”

Erotic fiction, or hardcore romantica. Take your pick. I didn’t realize it was quite so, er, steamy when I requested it from another library. I hate to use the word ‘definitely’ (no, really, I do), but….definitely not for the squeamish.

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham (Doubleday & Co., 1951)

This is one of those stories you should read just because it’s a classic. Not that it wasn’t good or interesting (well, I liked it anyway). A Post-Apocalyptic cautionary tale with an anarchist bent.

From the inside cover:
“It was on Tuesday, May 7, that Earth’s orbit passed through a cloud of comet debris. At least that’s what millions of people believed at the time.

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl (The Penguin Press, 2005)

If you have to pick one work of non-fiction to read this year, “Garlic and Sapphires” should be it. Reichl worked as a food critic in Los Angeles and then New York; this tale encompasses the lengths she went to in order to be able to fairly judge a restaurant’s quality.

Slaughterhouse-Five or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance With Death by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1969)

This is a novel everyone should read, both because of its cultural significance and its (so-called) literary worth. I found it confusing and jumbled until I realized that Vonnegut had deliberately written in the style of one from Tralfamadore, no beginning, no end, everything told at once.
