Questions No One Ever Asked

hissecretpast_web_small.jpg

I’m a technical writer. That means I write FAQs on a regular basis. Did you know that FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions? I bet you did.
Did you also know that most FAQs are made up by technical writers and have nothing to do with actual questions anyone has ever asked? Yep. It’s like writing fiction, except about bytes and bandwidth and secure passwords. And also the FAQs are usually nonfiction. Usually.

Private Arrangements

challenge_name:

I read a review of Private Arrangements at Dear Author and it sounded like something I would enjoy. It was. Almost.

Natural Born Charmer

challenge_name:

I love this book so much I read it about once every six months or so. As far as I'm concerned it's pretty close to a perfect read. I love the banter. I love the big cast. I love Dean and Blue.

Ellen

Beginner's Greek

challenge_name:

Yuck. This book is being marketed as "chick lit--only better." No way, I'm not buying that.

Dirty Girls on Top

challenge_name:

Dirty Girls on Top is a sequel to The Dirty Girls Social Club. I thought the author did a very good job of writing distinct voices for each character and making me care about their issues. I liked some characters and storylines more than others, but that's to be expected.

Baby, I'm Yours

challenge_name:

I very much enjoyed Baby, I'm Yours. Carrie always does a great job depicting family life and this book was no exception. The portraits of the three children at very different ages was so realistic.

Trailer Time! I'll show you mine...

My friend, Diana Holquist, makes funny book trailers. And now I have one. Yay!

A book trailer is like a movie trailer, except with a really, really, really low budget and no actors. The exception to this is the trailer for a book written by Dennis Hopper's daughter. Watching it I learned that industry connections go a long way toward improving the look and feel of the trailer. Where are my movie star relatives when I need them?

Outlander

challenge_name:

Outlander wasn't exactly my cup of tea. I found much of the dialogue engaging, and Claire was a wonderful heroine most of the time. Jaimie--I could have lost my heart to him except that I didn't. I think it just hit some of my personal preferences in the wrong way.

Silence is Golden or Pump up the Volume?

Music or not?

I write with the headphones on and the music playing. I work up a soundtrack for the book and play those few songs over and over and over and over again.

Why I Write (Or I'd Be One Happy Dictator)

I write because it’s tidy.

No, not the process. The process sucks.
