The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

An autistic boy's efforts to solve the mystery of a neighbourhood dog's death...such an interesting glimpse into how the main character perceives the world. Touching, funny, surprising, fast-moving.

Ancient People of the Arctic

I borrowed this book from the Thompson library while staying in that city for a couple of months this winter. It's not the Arctic but it's as far north as I've ever been, so it seemed like a good time to learn about the origins of the Inuit and their predecessors. It was fascinating reading, with helpful diagrams, maps and photos of artifacts.

His Secret Past

I enjoyed Ellen Hartman's writing style in her first book, Wanted Man, and did again in His Secret Past. The story is humorous, touching, sad and compassionate and the characters kept my interest all the way through to the satisfying end.

The Alexandria Link

An engrossing read, full of surprises. At times, for me, it almost moved too quickly, with brief scenes and frequent changes in point of view that made it difficult, at first, to get pulled in. That problem didn't last, though, and the book is to blame for a couple of sleep-deprived days.

The Diaper Diaries

Abby Gaines' characters are likable and the story, both amusing and touching, moves quickly to a satisfying conclusion. There's a secondary love story between two older characters, as well—they were interesting enough that I wished there was room to see more of them.

Rollback

Near the end of a long and productive life together a couple involved with extraterrestrial communication is offered the chance to “rollback”—undergo genetic changes that will make their bodies 25 again. An interesting and touching look at the relationship they've had and what happens to it after they agree to the procedure.

On the Wings of Love

The sepia tones of the cover, and the moody scene of a couple in period dress walking on a beach with a biplane overhead, were the first things to catch my attention. Then I saw that it was a 20th Century Harlequin Historical—I hadn't heard of this new, or new-ish, line and was very happy to see it.
