2008 Personal Reading Challenges

Okay, last year we came up with a couple of challenges - reading from your TBR pile (I am continuing that one and trying to keep to 20%); Vicki's challenge to read more than she purchased, I failed miserably last year due to my library reading, so this year I am going to try hard to make it, it will at least keep the TBR from growing.  So do you have a challenge for yourself or others, for me it is to try and force myself to read out of my comfort zones (romance, mystery and the occasional fantasy) to include a couple of non-fiction, biography or just other books.  Do you have a personal challenge for 2008?

My personal 2008 challenge

I am hoping to end 2008 with fewer books in my tbr than I started the year with. My tbr is at 97 right now and there are an additional 3 in ebook format (can't see them collecting dust though). A lofty goal, but I hope to succeed

Bonsal

Strange resolution

Why would you want less books around to read?Surprised

I liked your challenge last year, I haven't looked up the numbers but I read a goodly proportion of old to new TBR in 2007

Didn't stop me from reboosting the TBR thoughWink - but then I'm my own libraryLaughing

Good luck!

tbr pile

I am setting a goal to get my older tbr pile down for sure! I did horribly last year so this year I have set a goal to put a dent in them. And ofcourse that pile grew since last year.

People who look down on others are the real freaks of this world.

Personal challenge for 2008

Cady,

One of the 'resolutions' that I decided on for this year would be to read more of the books currently lurking in my TBR.  With over 300 books, that's definitely a challenge ~ of course it doesn't help that I'm still awaiting a few orders so that will add to my TBR... but maybe what I will do is list the books that have been in said pile for more than 6 months.

Another of my resolutions is to challenge myself by reading further outside my comfort zone.  I did do a LOT of that in 2007, but I know for a fact that there is still some work to be done in that area.  I'm very much a person that is quite happy to stay with the status quo and that goes for books as well, or maybe that's especially.

I did have something else that I wanted to pursue, but darned if I can remember what it is... if I think long enough, it'll come to me! Perhaps....

  I like this blog! Laughing

My 2008 personal challenge is to listen to more audiobooks.  I listen to the audiobooks as I exercise.  So, I figure more audiobooks = more exercise = less weight!Laughing  A win-win deal!!!

Sadhbh - for those of us

Sadhbh - for those of us who don't read as fast as you, a 300 book TBR could languish for years.

Moonsong and Bonsal, I am definately trying to keep up on the TBR challenge as well, it should be interesting to see how we do.

 Cady

Hey, Lynn and Kathy, you

Hey, Lynn and Kathy, you must have posted while I was.  Lynn, great goal, more books and healthy you.  Kathy, I will be interested to see some of your out-of comfort zone books.

Cady

2008 Personal Challenge

I think my personal challenge for 2008 is going to be to read more books than I did last year.

My personal challenge is to get more done around

the house which probably means FEWER books read with my eyes, more with my ears.  And to continue with Cady's TBR challenge from last year.  I really need to whittle away at my existing tbr.

Penn

I read 127 books last year.

I read 127 books last year. I set a goal to read at least 150 this year. Try more new authors and new genres. I found some new favs last year and I'm sure I will find some new ones this year.

I also have a goal of reading more of my existing TBR piles/boxes.

Cady's challenge

I haven't been keeping score this year, but last year from May when
you "invented" your challenge I made more or less of an effort each
month

In May it was 72% of my reading
June 22%
July 24%
August 41%
September 27%
October 24%
November 70%
and December 51%

which corresponds to a "yearly" average of 41%

Irrespective of how many books you read, if you decide not to visit bricks and
mortar bookstores between the time you order from eharl and the time
your order arrives, and during that period you decide to concentrate on
your "old" TBR, well you'll see results

Okay the time between my orders and my deliveries is slightly longer than for the rest of you, but the same principle applies

A wishlist is what you'd like to have available to read RIGHT NOW, but
you can save it on computer or write it on a post-it, the main thing is
to bring it to the bookstore with you WHEN you go, not going racing to
the bookstore just because you have a wishlist

If we applied that logic, we'd never leave the bookstore

Never Leave a Bookstore?!?

Hmmmm now that you mention it, that might be one way to keep down the tbr since the whole store would be available to you...maybe set up a tent in the middle of the travel section (less out of placemaybe). The bigger problem is the immediacy of the internet and eharlequin. I read a review. I add a book to my shopping list. I don't want too many books around because it is too hard to decide what to read next. Of course the bigger problem for me is that I hate clutter and all those books keep overflowing their boxes.Undecided

Reading Challenges

I liked your challenge last year Cady and was reading from the TBR. Since I currently have cataloged 388 in the TBR I can easily jump in there and make some headway. (I read 158 last year)  If I have any issues it is that they are closing a Waldenbooks (my fave place too) and everything in the store is 25% off.  I just picked up some Lora Leigh's and some new authors and want to check which Feehan's I need to start the Dark series.... tooo much temptation.

Goal 1 - read from the TBR at least 25-30% each month

 Goal 2 - broaden my horizon's with new authors/genres

Goal 3 - catalog all the books upstairs and figure out which have been read / which have not / separate them/ read read read

Hmmmm live in a bookstore.... it could work, there are chairs in the larger ones and coffee shops and bathrooms.....

LOL   Jeannie

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!

Goals

I'd like to quit buying new...but I broke that today and bought several.  Ok...so I'm bad slap my hand!

I'm going to try to read more of my personal TBR pile while still making an attempt to keep up with my review TBR pile.

I also want to make an attempt to finish several of the series that I've started and haven't made to the end yet.

I really enjoyed Cady's

I really enjoyed Cady's older tbr reading challange as well...it was just the motivation i needed to read books i'd kept planning to, but would bypass for a nicer newer looking book/cover...and it was great fun to actually dig in and start reading them. I had pledged 50% and did really well at sticking to it for the alotted time(i forget what it was now). I'm still reading from the older tbr, just not at quite the high percentage rate.

I'm still hoping to keep reading from my older tbr.

I'm hoping to curb my book buying more(good luck me!)

And i'm hoping to finish all the part books i have started, that i have put aside for being in the wrong reading mood...but which i could tell the stories were good, but i could also tell i wasn't doing them justice.

That's all this tired brain can think of right now...so i best put it to bed and resume fresh tomorrow. Smile

2008 Reading Goals

My reading goals for 2008 are similar to everyone else's

1.  Read more than I buy (I began tracking in April and I bought 48 more books than I read in that time period. Not good. But this is a new year!!)

2. Read from my older TBR. (I've figured our a way to track it this year.)

3. Read at least one non-fiction book a month.

4. Try audio books on my MP3 player.

For January,  I'm doing good for the first three goals. I've purchased 10 and read 22.  Out of the 22, 18 have been from my older TBR.  I'm reading now a non-fiction book on writing. Aren't I special?  Hehe....

As a side note, buying no new books is not something that I'm really capable of. I love books and they love me. They just seem to jump in my basket at stores. They want to go home with me. Innocent

I too don't think I could

I too don't think I could stop buying new books, but I am using Vicki's challenge to try and keep from expanding my TBR into a scary pile.  I am also hoping to catalogue my TBR, would be great to know what all is in the pile.

Cady

Books want to go home with me

Vikki - does this mean that you have a houseful of stray men, dogs and cats tooFoot in mouth

Just say NO!

I can understand the compulsion, but then I don't have very many bookshops with English speaking books (and then when I see the prices - approx 150% of what they would be new in IrelandYell) I have less trouble being patient and buying online.

I could understand if you were going to read everything you buy straight away

but since you're not, why not keep the money in your pocket and read the books you've got at the moment?

It seems most of us get

It seems most of us get into a comfort zone on books.  I think my fear with moving out of it, is that I will end up struggling through books that I don't like.

 Cady

My Fear

My fear is not that I will struggle through something I don't like mine is that I'll have to add another auto buy author to my already overloaded houseful of books. I have added so many new authors from last year already.

I once had the same fear

I once had the same fear Cady. For many years i wouldn't try anything out of my comfort zone, but then a customer kept talking about her books and showing me them(this is when i used to read mostly just the quick Har. & Sil. reads). She made her thick books(they were pretty much historicals) sound sooo good, and then one day she handed me a box of her books, and said "try them", and when your finished reading them, bring them back, and i'll give you another box. Well, i absolutely loved reading the more meatier stories...not all of them mind you, but alot of them...the ones i didn't enjoy, i'd put back in the box and grab another one.

If i hadn't told myself, "if you don't like the book, you can stop reading it", i may never have ventured outside my comfort zone as much as i have...and oh what an exciting reading world it is now...so much variety.

Cady's challenges

I was going to modify your 2007 Challenge a bit but use it.  I was so conscientious...cleared off an entire shelf and was going to use it to put in incoming books.  My goal would be to read the incoming books, as many as come in during a month, particularly from subscriptions and add ssome Medieval historical fiction and mysteries to the mix, before I let blogs divert me so much.  Well, it is not even at the mid point of January and I am already failing miserably!  The entire shelf is full already and most of my Jan. orders/subscriptions are not here!  In my defense, I put some Dec. subscription books on the shelf since mail was soooo slow in Dec. and many of the books were gifts.  Love books as gifts.

I hadn't thought of that. If I don't like it I don't have to read it. I have found out that some books I don't like to read I do like to listen to in the car on audiobook. this is a great way to read books.

Karen
My goal in life is to survive. Everything else is just a bonus.

Okay, so I am a little late

getting to the blog.  But I want in on this.  lol

I have over 300 books in my current TBR pile.  By the end of this year I would love to see the number dwindle down to something a little more manageable.  And my manageable I mean something that will fit on one bookshelf!  lol  So, my goal is by the end of the year I want to have my TBR pile down to 250 books.  This won't get everything on one bookshelf but it's a start.  Taking in to consideration that I only read 144 books last year (I say only like that's not a lot) knocking my pile down that much is going to be a larger accomplishment.  This is going to tie in with my read more/buy less goal this year also.

I gotta make some room.  One day I dream of having both my keepers and my TBR all in the same room!!  lol

LOL Jill

Boy, I'm not sure I'd ever want that... 'cause then I'd almost have to get rid of a number of books ~ or give up keepers!  *shudder*

I hear ya.  But honestly, I have more books than my home can handle.  You've probably heard this before but I have soooo many books I've got them in storage.  That is not good.  If I want to re-read I have to wait until the storage place is open, go to storage, find the right tote then dig through said tote until I find the book I want.  It's just a mess.

Oh.. that Bites!

Jill, that sure doesn't sound like any fun at all ~ well D'uh... fun's a poor word choice.  I can definitely see why you would like to reduce your TBR ~ I'd be going nuts... or, er... nutsier?  Embarassed

Jill - that is a drag.  I am with you on the reduction of the TBR, i think that is why I am doing both the TBR challenge and the buy challenge this year - otherwise, while I am pulling books out of the TBR, I am adding them at the same time.  I need to read 4 more books  (non-library) this month to break even and I would really like to be on the positive instead - we will see.

My own challenge for 2008

I plan on reading atleast 100 books myself this year.  In the past it was easy.  But now that I am back to my reading, I think I will be able to reach my goal.  Not to mention all the books I have bought already.  I am not sure what the number is on my TBR, but I just got 8 more books in the mail today.  I guess I have my work cut out for me!Kiss

My personal goal for 2008

My own personal goal is blog/review 365 books.  That is one book a day.  Which is what I read anyway.  With me it's finding time to blog.  I read to much to keep up.  My dh laughs at me because when I go down the book asile at the store my hand reachs out and grabs a book and I keep on moving I don't even stop.  LOL Innocent

Well anyone that wants to get rid of TBR or old books can send them to me. Smile I accept all books. I don't have a TBR pile expect when I go to the library.

As soon as I buy a new book I normally read it that day or if not then the next day.

sometimes my Mom will give me a bunch of books and I will have a few to read but it normally I get them I read them. I would love to have a closet full of books that I could pull out and read whenever I want to

Karen

2008 Goals

Well, definitely get those TBRs down - the problem is that while I'm doing that I'm buying others and by the time I get to some of those they are now TBRs!  I'm getting dizzy!

One goal I have this year is to log my library.  I've been thinking about it for about 3 years now and 2008 is it.  I've just ordered a cutecat barcode scanner to help with the project.  I hope to cull some of the keepers while my head is in the shelves!  I will also log my TBRs - I have no idea how many I've have but I'm estimating over 300.

I want to at least maintain my TBR challenge 2007 rate.  From May to Dec 07 I averaged at 34%.  Today I'm at 41%, but I'm expecting new books any day now so that will go out the window fast!

To read more than I buy in

To read more than I buy in 2008? I wonder if that is possible? Does that count books ordered that I didn't pay for? For instance, buy 2 get 1 specials or Free Book Friday. I just placed an order for 13 books and two were free. I think I will try this challenge. I have many that I could read. In addition to the 13 books I have bought 2 new books and traded books on my shelf for 6 books. So that's a total of 21 books bought this year and 12 of the 15 books I have read were purchased in 2007 or earlier.

I need to post this in my blog.

TBR pile

I have the perfect excuse to read from my large TBR pile and not buy, I'm going to France in May!  Everytime I go into a store and think there's something I want to buy, I think, "No, you're going to France in May!"  It works as long as I stay away from the book sections of Target and Walmart! Cry Last year I had to buy a small bookcase for my TBR pile and each of the three rows is three rows deep plus some piled on top.  Smack me upside the head if I buy any more books!  Got to save my pennies so I can turn them into Euros!  Going to France is the only thing that would make me pass up buying more books!Cool

That's a really good

That's a really good reason.  I just sorted my TBR yesterday and reviewing the books did make me think read from here instead of buying.

River Cruise through France

I don't mind the whole world knowing as I hope that there are other bloggers out there who might be going also.  I am going on a "River Cruise through France" sponsored and led by Burt Wolf of PBS fame.  We are starting in Paris (of course) then going to Burgandy and Beaune.  Then we are taking a boat down the Rhone river with stops in Avignon, Arles and finishing in Nice.  It will be my third trip to France and likely my last.  I spent 3 weeks in Paris 21 years ago and went to France the first time when I was 16.  I would like to find my childhood penpal but have had no luck so far.  I'm as excited about this trip as I was about the other two; you'd think it was my first time.  Oh yes, Burt Wolf is filming a documentary of this!Cool
