The Spice Rack

Please, be aware that subject matter in
SPICE discussions may contain topics of
  an adult nature.

Spice is an imprint that's hotter than
the BLAZE series and offers the best
  of erotic fiction for women.

  Sophisticated and realistic, Spice
novels feature explicit sex scenes and
frank language. Written by some of the brightest stars of women's fiction, these novels are engaging, entertaining and very sexy!

Female readers who enjoy reading Lori Foster, Emma Holly and Zane will love the erotic fiction of Spice. (And make no mistake - with its engaging story lines and involving characters, this is erotic fiction, not erotica)

BTW all, I have a question.

BTW all, I have a question. In a Spice Brief, how important do you think it is for the heroine to be a sympathetic character? I have a story where the heroine is twisted and uses her whiles to get the affable hero... and it would ruin it to make her good. Is this acceptable, do you think?

I'm so confuzzled...

I went to my usual bookmark and Spice Rack was gone. Page not found! No bread crumbs! Good thing I'm persistent...

Lauren--I think as long as there is a good reason for the twisted heroine, she can be played sympathetic even if her actions aren't always good. And you can let the hero straighten her out! *cackle*

I can not believe I found it on the first try.

I think understanding where the heroine is coming from is more important than particularly liking them.  That's just my humble opinion.Smile

Breadcrumbs

Hello ladies.

I couldn't get on to get a link to leave breadcrumbs until now. Sorry.

This is the actual thread we'll be using now. Welcome back.

I've left breadcrumbs in the last rack.

And Lauren, I don't think so. I agree with Betty.  I think it depends on your story.

Bread Crumbs!

Lorie - I think you can go ahead use the bread crumbs to make stuffing.  If I have found my way around, it will be a piece of cake for everyone else!  Great job, and so much smoother than the switch a few years back.  Great job!Cool

twisted heroines

I think flawed characters are wonderful. But keep in mind the limitations of the wordcount on a brief. She doesn't have to be perfect but if she's your heroine you want people to like her or at least see her as a heroine.

likeable heroines

And along that line, if you're writing for Briefs,  it doesn't have to be a "romance" per se. Erotica is different than erotic romance -- I would say in a romance you MUST have likeable heroes and heroines. It's just one of those things a romance needs.

But erotica? Well...one might argue that any heroine or hero should be likeable, but I'm not sure that has to be true. A compelling, intriguing and interesting character can drive fiction, even sexy fiction, just as well or even better than one everyone "likes."

Or you can make someone seem unlikeable and show their growth and have them be likeable at the end.

Megan, I have a complaint ;) Since reading about kettle chips in Tempted I have been eating them by the bagful- ARGH! But they are keeping the muse happy, so I guess... thanks? ;)

Welcome Back

Hey LD, M, glad to see you.

I made it... kinda

Still trying to figure out the new threads/digs and what goes where.

So it seems we have a new thread/discussion for strictly the writing side of things with "between the sheets... of paper" - how cool. Or did I completely misunderstand the thread title and info.

Between the Sheets

Yes, Angeleque

You've got it right.

While all fiction writing has the same basic structure erotic fiction does vary enough that it should have it's own space. I thought about asking Dee to park it on her board, since she's the hosty for The Write Stuff, but then I'd have to board hop even more...

Tempted...

Megan, I am completely intrigued by the blurb for Tempted. If it were a shorter book, I'd have downloaded it already! However, for longer books, I want the print version. I'm angling to get near a B&N by Friday. (I live in the boonies, no bookstores.) Can't wait to read it!

I must say I like the new look and layout, though it's going to take some getting used to. It'll give me something to do as I still wait on my spice brief submission response.

Oh, tease me not once but twice huh Lauren... Tongue out not fair.

Shayla, in case I missed it earlier, welcome to the Rack.

Good luck on your Brief Angeleque

re - good luck

Thanks.

Waiting is hard but I'm still writing and adding more irons to the fire so hopefully I'll hear something soon (closing in on 6 months). It's different a kinda reunion story with an open ending not a true HEA so from what I read it may work for the line.

And all this waiting is helping me to try and develop patience.

Angeleque, you and I must have subbed around the same time. I'm closing in on the six month mark. Mine didn't necessarily have an HEA either. The H/h weren't in love. Just having really good sex! *cackle*

MSurprised

re - spice brief submission

It seems that way. My hero and heroine definitely aren't in love but it leaves room for it down the line.

I guess I'm more

I guess I'm more concerned... the heroine isn't really aheroine, persay. She's just the main character. It's kind of a twisted little story based off of an urban legend, with lots of sex thrown in.

Maybe it'll make more sense if I just throw in my blurb:

When Brody drives down a dark country road one evening, in the midst of the wettest, hottest summer storm that he has ever seen, he is not expecting to meet Jessica, a beautiful young woman dressed all in white who eerily appears in the middle of the road. He offers her shelter, and over the following few hours Brody is at turns entertained, annoyed, and turned on by the incredible woman in his passenger’s seat. When she tells him that the evening reminds her of a certain urban legend that she has once heard, however, Brody realizes that he is in for the wildest night of his life, one he’s not certain he will survive- literally.

Basically Jessica is getting her kicks by acting out this story and scaring the beejeebers out of Brody... not the nicest woman. But I'm quite proud of my little story... I just don't know if it's spice brief material :S

Urk.

Hmmmmmm ........

I dunno, Lauren ... that seems like a Spice Brief to me .... (one I'd very much like to read!)   ...... Nancy Madore's present brief is the Goldilocks fairytale .... there's no romantic HEA in that story ... and isn't a fairytale pretty much the same as a legend, urban or otherwise?    ...... if you haven't read Nancy's Spice Enchanted, you should .... it's a collection of favourite fairytales and I don't think the heroines in them are typical heroines  .... three of the fairytales are now offered as Briefs ..... and Briefs are on sale right now for 89 cents, so check them out ....... I love her Beauty story!  Embarassed

I like the sound of your story, and since I’m not always the nicest of people I could probably relate.

Hey Katherine. It’s good to see you in here more. Smile

Well, I'll take the plunge,

Well, I'll take the plunge, then, thanks to everyone's wonderful encouragement! Different is good, sometimes, right? RIGHT?

I actually haven't read anything of Nancy Madore's, apart from her Twelve Dancing Princesses. I need to catch up on the spice briefs, actually... they're all so good! I think my personal favorites are "Anything You want" by Jenesi Ash, "Invite Me In" by Delilah Devlin, "Forever Yours" by Charlotte Featherstone, and, of course, "This is What I Want", by Megan Hart, since I have my own little one person fan club going for her ;)

I think that next I'll probably read Jina Bacarr's Tokyo Rendevous... and I think that Paige and Tracy's are being released in February! Yay!

Hellooooooooo,

I have been lurking but having trouble posting.  New computer is up but not on Internet yet.  I need to buy a thingie so it can pick up the thingie on this ‘puter.  You know, the thingie that they have in coffee shops.  (And yes, the eyes will roll in the store when I get a chance to go buy the “whatever” that is on DD’s laptop.  I miss having IT support.  No, not like Megan’s H in TIWIW, I could only wish!)

Anyway the type seems smaller and lighter but it might be my vision.  The real bug is the constant pop-ups for sex potions and toys.

I am typing this in Word and will cut and paste.  If you are reading it then my methods are valid. If not I will try to send psychic messages from this tech-challenged alternate word in which I live.

Question

Is Kettle chips like Kettle corn?  Cause that stuff is just wrong.  ;)

Shelli

kettle chips

ooh I love those.

And kettle corn is the best I get to satisfy my sweet and salty craving fix in one shot instead of having lays and m&m's. And the buttery kettle corn is great too. But I love the toffee butter popcorn too - it smells great, tastes wonderful but's hard to find.

And if you couldn't tell - i'm hungry right now with 6 hours left at work and trying not to eat my lunch to early. time to hit the vending machine.

I'm not sure what kettle

I'm not sure what kettle corn is, but kettle chips are like actual chips of no processed potatoes that have been made all greasy and good. The big brand for them up here in Canada is Miss Vickies, don't know about in the States.

They are soooo good.

And see, Megan, see what you started? It's madness!

Megan, I am really enjoying the daily online.  I cannot see what is going to happen with Molly.  I also like the excerpt from Tempted, I know I will be adding that also to my to be read list.
