Amy, you're doing great!  ...... there's always a bit of a learning curve with anything new

I was a beta tester, and I must say at first I hated it ... but now that they've made a few format changes and I'm getting used to using the lovely "my favourite" options, I'm loving how easy it is to maneuver .... plus the site really zips along!  .... I like zippy!  Smile

I miss using my html as I type though ... that's taking abit to get used to

Re: Book Challenge

Amy, to get to the Challenge blog simply click on "Book Challenge" on the title bar below the Imprint bar .... that will take you to the "new" combined Challenge blog .... if you want to go to an individuals blog, simply click on the members name it appears on the line below every subject line of their posts .... this will take you to their Profile page ... if the member has blog entry there is a spot on the Profile page where it shows the members list of blog entries ... just click on any one of those to get to their blog  ..... I hope that works!

oh, and to add someone to your Buddy/Friends list .. again, just click on the member's name to open up their Profile page ... beside their name you will see the option to Ask to add them as a Friend .... click on that, once the member accepts your request you will have them listed on your buddy list

to try it out, you're welcome to click on my name above .... I'd be happy to add you to my buddy list Smile

wah!!!

Argh!!! I dont like this new system at all. Wah Cry

I've just done like you said Katherine and just don't like it. The old way you got a list of everyone and clicked on whoever. The new way we have to scroll through a heap of posts to find the person you're after before we can even click on their name to go to their profile.  Surely there's an easier way? I really want to go to VincePlato and I don't even think he's there yet.Frown

Chin Up, Amy

We'll get you through this...somehow. I'm still trying to find my way as well, so bear with me. A lot of this is trial and error and amazingly simple. I'm not sure if the format of the posts and how we look at the blogs is going to change, but I agree, having to go through heaps of posts is unnerving and one of the chief complaints.

Hang in there!

Rae

Another Moan

Sorry, really have my grumpy pants on today.

Rae, do we have to scroll down all the time to get to the last comments on this forum? What happens when we have hundreds of comments? The old system automatically took you to where you left off last time.

Medical Board

I have been doing some exploring and found this great Medical Forum. I like everyone else am still having hickups but overall like the new site. I tried to add some of you as friends, hopefully that works out.

I have a lot of respect for the ladies on this forum who are also authors. I have a medical background and can fill in medical details but to craft a good story, that is another thing, that is a lot more difficult. Keep up the great work.

hi everyone

Katherine, I am stil lhaving a hard time getting my friends to show up even though they are on my buddy list.

I just finished my 6th MR.  This line has really taken me by storm.  You would all laugh if you knew how much I hate medical things in real life!  Even when I go to a doctor I really like my normally low blood pressure (even according to the new 120 standard) really jumps.  Thank goodness my doctor was smart enough to get me to measure it at home because if he had put me on medication to lower it more, I would have had real problems! Anyhow, this line just really, really grabs me.

I just finished the first Crocodile Creek book and I was surprised to see once again, that despite my non-medical background, these books always seem to have some relevance or resonance with me personally in the medical scene as well as the romance.   I did Red Cross Disaster Services volunteer work when I lived in NC and worked through many a hurricane with RC staffing shelters and interviewing families after the fact and also as a ham radio operator.  I just love the way this book (and probably the mini-series?) makes that sense of disaster urgency so re-present for me.  I think maybe that is what makes great writing...that it can touch many kinds of readers on a personal level. I doubt I'll blog the book today because my dh is home today sick with some stomach thing and hard to work, take care of him and try to get my book thoughts together but hope it was ookay to pop in here and write some less organized thoughts.

Re: hi everyone

Paisley ... as far as your friends list goes ... I think that the ones that are not showing up on your Profile page are the ones that have you on their "pending"  list ...... I have a few like that as well ...... however the ones that I let know that they need to check their "pending" lists and accept or deny, those are now showing up ..... so I do think it's really a matter for everyone to just get used to things  ... it will fall into place

Friend list and Oxygen saturation

Katherine, these are people who asked me and I have already accepted them but they are not showing up as friends.  Maybe it takes the system time to process al lthe changes esp. now at the beginning?

I have one medical question.  Oxygen saturation levels are a key element in many of my MR reads.  Can someone tell me what percentage of oxygen saturation is considered bad at sea level and needing supllemental oxygen?  I live at 6000 ft and the OK level is very different here. Here anything 90% and above is considered good enough to remove a patient from supplemental oxygen...at least that is what the top respiratory specialist doctors told me and that was the level at which I was taken off oxygen when I had this wicked pneumonia-like virus.  I know it is different at sea level. A sea level close friend, and nurse, freaked when her husband's went down to 94% wih pneumonia which is considered very good here. The pulse ox meters talk about altitude but I think it would help my reading to know what is that trigger point at sea level.

AKA Merri
Family Challenge Team: The Spine Breakers with my dh Glenn AKA Phaedrus

Oxygen Saturation

Paisley;

Here on the east coast we use 92% as an acceptable minimum for adults and 94% for the pediatric population. However the desired level varies with the disease entity involved. People with COPD (chronic obstuctive pulmonary disease) can usually tolerate somewhat lower levels.  Also to confuse the issue some more, some patients should not have too much oxygen or there are adverse consequences. (Carbon dioxide retention and marked drowsiness for example)

Hope this helps at least somewhat

Linda

Thanks Amy!

Thanks Amy! Smile  I received your book Found, A Father For Her Child today. I can't believe the postage you had to pay! Surprised

I quickly went looking to see how much the book would cost if I lived in AU but all I could see were the CAN/US prices. Does that mean this book is not sold 'down under'? Or is this one of your 'author copies' for the North American market? I'm still trying to figure out why I can't find the HM's in the stores here in Regina.

I want to dive right in and read it but I'm in the middle of Brenda Novak's book Big Girls Don't Cry which has been sitting in my TBR pile waiting for the next 2 in the series. Yours will be the next one after them. I'll let you know what I think here as well as in my book review blog.

Thanks again! I love the cover and the conflict in the blurb is fascinating. Where's that emoticon for 'ooh'?

 Anita mae.

Anita Mae .... HM's are only available by subscription from the Harlequin Reader service or from the eHarl online store  ...... one nice addition is now you can get some (hopefully all) the HM's in eBook form as well .... which will be really good because the print books tend to sell out really fast

if you're committed to the line, you may want to look into subscribing ...... you can do that online in the eHarl store

Hi everyone. Welcome to Anita and Linda and hello to Lynne. Sorry been away on a 12hr day shift and am finally making my way back.Innocent

Hmm - probaby should know that sea level and ox sats questions but the answers already given sound pretty sound to me. I work in PICU and y'all don't want to know what we'll tolerate for O2 sats from time to time Surprised

Anita - pleased you recieved the book. Gonna add you to my friends list.

Jayne - I've no doubt Amy made many mistakes in her diddling around Wink Not the most techno competent and I tried lots of times to get it right. Sorry if I bunged up the system - don't think I'll add links in future Undecided

Like Lynne,  I too,  am happy that people are taking the time to bother to get in. My big worry is that we'll lose members because they dont have the time to diddle around.

Is this what you were looking for?

The 14 Sure Fire Plot Points was from an article in the RWR of 1998 written by agent Irene Goodman. So I don't take credit for the article but I do take credit for passing it on because it's so good. Of course, there are other plot points she doesn't mention (such as Fish out of Water or Axe waiting to fall) but when starting a new book, I've always found these invaluable.

14 SURE FIRE PLOT POINTS

This article is by IRENE GOODMAN on "Fourteen Sure-Fire Romance Plots" in the Agents Corner section of the Romance Writers' Report for December 1998, Volume 18, Number 12.

Irene Goodman has been an agent for 20 years, specialising in women's fiction. She represents a number of best-selling authors, including Debbie Macomber, Linda Lael Miller, Pamela Morsi, Stephanie Mittman, Barbara Boswell, Carol Buck and Susan Mallery. She lives in New York with her husband and two children.

  • * * * * Almost all romance novels break down into fourteen classic plots. If you use one of them or a combination for more than one, you can't go wrong. I have developed the following handy guide. It is by no means carved in stone, and there are probably other plots I haven't thought of. But it's a good start, and it's a sure-fire tool when facing a tough market.

    1. The Lady and the Cowboy
This is an all-time classic. It has to do with class differences, which for some reason are very sexy. It is also referred to as the Lady and the Carpenter. You don't have to take these labels
literally. They don't have to be actual cowboys or carpenters, and the ladies don't have to be high class or rich. They do have to come from different worlds in a way that makes the sparks fly. For an off-beat example, consider the romance in Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead". She's the rebellious daughter of a newspaper tycoon, and he's a dedicated architect working in a quarry. Of course she doesn't know he's an architect. She hires him as a labourer. It doesn't take too long for him to captivate her and soon the tables are turned.

    2. Marriage of Convenience
Another great classic. Try to avoid obvious contrivances here, but the conflict is ready-made and the sexual tension is built in.

    3. Beauty and the Beast.
One of them is physically marred in some way. It doesn't have to be the hero. In Pamela Morsi's "Courting Miss Hattie", the heroine is known as "Horse-Face Hattie" because of her rather equine countenance. The hero is the best-looking guy in town. This creates an immediate emotional pull, because the heroine is vulnerable We feel for her and we are also rooting for her.

    4. Cinderella.
Everyone loves a good Cinderella story. If you do one of these, make sure there is at least one elaborate shopping spree. The used to say Judith Krantz was successful because she wrote about the two things women like best: sex and shopping. Again you can do a gender reversal here. She could be the duchess and he could be a mountain man who either learns how to become a gentleman, or successfully charms everyone as he is, as in Crocodile Dundee.

    5. Three Trials.
In mythology, you often find a story in which the characters must pass certain tests of strength and character before they are allowed to be happy. In a romance novel, this usually takes the form of some kind of adventure, in which both characters must use their wits in order to outfox mutual enemies. This makes for a fast-paced story. Just be sure that the core of the relationship and its conflicts remain vivid and clear. A wonderfully entertaining example of this type of story is Linda Lael Miller's "Princess Annie".

    6. The Homemaker and the Rover.
I love this one, because it calls upon one of the essential natural differences between the sexes. He is a consummate rover, often with no address, and she is the consummate homebody, someone who creates a warm and loving haven. Because romance novels are for women, the female fantasy always wins out, and they guy finds he can't live without her love and care. A beautiful example of this plot is Nora Roberts' "Born in Ice".

    7. Good Girl/Bad Boy.
This is similar to the Lady and the Cowboy, except that class differences don't need to be involved, and the hero needs to be redeemed in some way. She could be the preacher's daughter, and he's the wayward man. Of course he will reform as necessary in the name of love, and she may need to loosen up a bit.

    8. Bad Girl/Good Boy.
She's usually more kooky than bad, but he's a squeaky clean Peter Graves type and she drives him crazy. He needs to be shaken up and she needs to be grounded. He may be a lawyer or an accountant; she may be an artist or a funky cafe owner.

    9. Environmentalist vs. Developer.
He wants to build a theme park right next to her family's pastoral estate. Or she wants to open a pizza joint in the middle of an idyllic town. This device has gotten pretty old, so try to come up with something very fresh and original.

    10. Mentor/Protege.
One of them has something the other needs to learn. The two work together on some kind of project. Many Jayne Krentz books feature this kind of story very effectively.

    11. He Killed Dad.
Romeo and Juliet revisited. Two people or two families are on opposite sides of an issue. It could be north and south, feuding Scottish clans or Indians vs whites. This creates a very strong conflict. Just be sure that the conflict isn't so strong that you can't figure out how to resolve it.

    12. Amnesia or Mistaken Identity.
This is one of the classic Shakespearean devices. You can get a lot of mileage out of these if you are clever and remember to keep the core of the relationship humming.

    13. Reunion/Secret Baby.
They had a romance years ago, but something went wrong, and they went their separate ways. Now they come together again after a long absence. This one often works well because it is so close to life. Not many women once disguised themselves as men in order to sneak onto a pirate ship, but most people have someone in their past who may still intrigue them if given the opportunity. This plot leads naturally to the secret baby device, in which a pregnancy resulted from the long-ago romance, but the guy doesn't know about it.

    14. Ashley Wilkes.
The conflict in this type of story is that one of them is carrying a torch for someone else. The someone else could be deceased spouse or sweetheart, or it could be someone living. We wait eagerly for the torch to be toppled and for the character holding it to come to his or her senses. This can be expanded into another level. For example, one of them may be engaged to someone else, and feels honour bound to keep that commitment, even when true loves comes along in another form.

Classic stories became classics for a good reason - everyone likes them, and they have stood the test of time. Of course you must come up with a fresh approach and a strong voice, but if you apply your unique style to a proven hit, you may find the waters easier to navigate.

    Medical Themes

Hi, Here are the current themes that the editors of HMB Medicals are looking for. The key is to take these themes and make them unique...give them a twist.

Good luck! Writing Medicals is so much fun and we love it when someone sells...always great to partyWink

Setting the Scene (and Theme): Medical Romance Everywhere
    Sheila Hodgson
    Senior Editor, Medical Romance

What's hot in medical romance right now? Read on.

Kids — There are several key angles to this one:

    • Children are always popular in Medical Romance books, and the younger the better. They can form part of the hero and heroine's conflict, and story lines featuring medical personnel struggling to meet the demands of a medical career plus a family, plus renewing a romantic relationship or struggling with the demands of a new one, are very popular in medicals. Those featuring hero/heroines who are single parents particularly are strong.

    • The other way to involve children is via the medical setting — children's doctors and pediatric departments are great.

Emergency — What we're looking for here is stories in the ER mode: the life-on-the-edge drama, fast-moving pace and intense emotions we see in ER. Lots of scope for excitement here, along with that great sense of community, staff with their own issues, struggling to retain a life amidst long-working hours as they repeatedly need to stay behind to save a life — you can't just walk away from a crash situation!

ER settings, emergency response units or similar situations, which can also involve other emergency services such as firefighters and police, are terrific settings for medicals. They also have the benefit of potentially including a full range of medical personnel, surgeons and other specialists, nurse practitioners, doctors, emergency response teams, midwives, paramedics, etc.

Midwifery — Can be either midwives in the community attending home births, or set in a maternity unit. All those different permutations of labor and the ahh factor of a baby at the end of them, and some emotional issues, too, make this area of medicine a perennially popular one.

Mediterranean Doctors — By that we mean dishy, Italian, Spanish, Greek and French medical heroes are winners with readers of the Medical Romance series. They can be set in the country of their birth — always interesting to see how another country's medical system works — or somewhere else. Or they can be working in say the U.S., U.K., Australia or anywhere where they fall in love with their heroine.

Pregnant Doctors — Heroines in senior medical positions, unexpectedly pregnant and having to cope with the dilemmas of juggling a busy career and the prospects of how to cope with also being a single parent and a new relationship, are hot, hot, hot.

Medical Rescue — Several routes to explore here:

International rescue Ground rescue Air rescue Sea rescue Other emergency services — e.g., paramedics working with the fire service

All of these types of units and settings give great scope for medical personnel working in adventurous, exciting and sometimes dangerous situations and can give rise to some compelling medical drama.

Police/Doctor/Surgeon — Can involve medical personnel working with police, and provide scope for some interesting medical drama, including forensics. These heroes and heroines can also be family doctors, performing a dual role, so they can perform a wide range of medical drama.

Flying Doctors — They could be set anywhere in the world, but mainly this service seems to center around Australia, and it's the sense of community and remote medical setup that really brings this theme its own flavor.

Christmas — As long as it features strongly, and involves Christmas being brought into the hospital or other medical setting, Christmas stories are loved by Medical Romance readers.

GP Practices (Family Medical Practices) — Readers love the kind of personal attention and sense of community this setting can bring to a romance.

City and Rural Hospitals — These are great settings for developing contained worlds and community and varied pace.

They are trying to get subscriptions to the MR line.  I did notice one of the two free books offered is "A Woman to Belong To" by Fiona Lowe and the other is "The Doctor's Pregnancy Bombshell" by Janice Lynn.

    Medical Freebie

Yesterday I received my shipment of Super Romance for January with a free Medical Romance enclosed. "His Very Special Nurse" by Margaret McDonagh. The promotion is for a new Subscription to the Medical line. I think it is great that Harlequin is promoting the Medical line. Several steps to go. 1) increase to 6 books per month so we get all the books published in the UK. 2) retail release of Medicals.

Fiona; Thank you for your kind welcome. I admit to being a reader only not a writer. I do have plot lines in my head but I don't know that I would ever be able to write anything. Some of my experiences in the ER could make good fodder for someones book. I read the UK edition of "A Woman to Belong To" last fall. It was great, it made me feel very differently about Vietnam. My opinions had been previously been influenced by the Vietnam war and all the movies that followed it.

Amy; Glad to come aboard. I look forward to your next book. I have already read "The Italian Count's Baby" in the UK edition. It is well done. I would reccomend it to my North American friends when it comes out here.

    Made it!!

    Hey, ladies!

Finally had a moment to sit down and post. For the past two weeks I've been having the mother of all flues and MAJOR dental work (which is not done, not by a long shot, but at least the root canals have been done and I'm not having lightning discharging in my head anymore!Cry)

Soooo, the new room looks spiffy and I see you ladies are keeping it busy. LOVE to see a crowded room!!!Laughing

And it's great to hear there are more efforts going on to promote the fabulous Medical line!! Tres exciting! Thanks Paisley, Linda and Ellen for letting us know. I also hear they're trialing us in eBooks, and would love to see the day when we're there regularly! With eBooks the economical and sure way to get books here, I am really partial to them and can see how convenient they can be to thousands more readers.

Apart from being sick like a dog for the past weeks, I had good news too. My nineth Medical has been accepted, and I even have a title THE DESERT SURGEON'S SECRET SON! Will let you know when I have a pub date!

Thanks too all of you who accepted my friendship request! Waving hard to my lovely fellow Med authors, Fiona, Amy, Lynne and Laura, and our wonderful hosties Rae and Jayne, blowing huge kisses to Nell and Penn (Penn, I'm constantly remembering our times together in Dallas lasy July!!) and an extra special welcome to our relatively new regulars, Katherine T, Paisley, Linda, Anita Mae and Ellen. Hope to always see you here!
